Competition Central / I would like to be unbanned from submissions
« on: January 15, 2008, 08:48:01 pm »
A brief history of events surrounding my banning, as best I remember them:

I joined the site, submitted a batch of obvious fakes, and was banned from submissions. TSC went down so the ban was removed. Again, I submitted obvious fakes, hiding behind some lame-note excuse when confronted. I removed the charts in question...I don't remember anything getting done as a result. I then lurked around the community for a bit, and someone mentioned in chat how fakes are detected. At this point, I knew how to lie without getting caught, and submitted times that were just barely better than others who were honest about their accomplishments. For a while it looked as though I were a genuine player, even earning adminship at one point. People were suspicious, but there was no concrete proof so nothing could be done. Eventually the site crashed, and the last copy of the database was very old. I would have to resubmit all my fake stats, which I didn't bother remembering. I also submitted a new fake stat, which was disproved through another method; and a second that was better than a TAS of the chart. I was banned. I left the site after promising to get proof, returned around 6 months later, and admitted I lied. Then I lurked..which is where I am today!

I haven't submitted anything in over 3 years, but I've stayed with the site anyways. Nobody else has done that. When I was suspected, I did leave, but I came back to admit what I had done. There really was no reason for me to do that if I didn't value the community; we were switching isp's soon, I could have easily registered another account and gone undetected. However I did, and for it I think I should be given a (third) second chance.

I should be given a blank slate to start over with...as a totally different person, without the suspicion of being 'that guy who cheated'. Demanding proof for everything I submit is a bit much too...I should be treated as a normal competitor, and only be asked to supply proof for charts that other users would have to...supply proof for. The quality of my posts has gone up noticeably. Take a look at what I wrote when I first joined, and what I write now. There is a clear difference...I'm not the same user I used to be (for better or worse), and it isn't fair to punish me for what are, effectively, another person's actions.

All I'm asking is that I get another chance, and not be prejudged for prior bad acts.

Edit: unbanned today by SM, I will not abuse this privelage.

Actually, it'd probably be 4 teams of 4.

Would it be better in a team game to pick land draws instead of everything being randomized? I see some teams getting screwed off the bat because their lands are too close to each other.

Players who have agreed to join
genus
egg
Magnum
Achlys (gone for an unspecified period of time. 1 week? 2 week? years? hm.)
Stefan

Players who have NOT agreed to join because they're LAME
Sondow (Burnout called)
Mike (I think? Seemed noncommital but reluctant for me to write him in)
Spinballwizard likes to fly solo :(

More to come.

REVIVAL

Risk is an awesome game, and people seem to be losing interest, probably because the games resolve themselves very quickly. You almost always know a few turns in who the real threats are going to be, and even with alliances they tend to be so strong little can be done.

Say, did I just hear someone suggest...a team-based game on TSC with fucking tons of players on the Texas map? Because that sounds like a pro idea to me.

Potential players as of now are: Rolken (time issues?), Stefan, Mike (douchebag issues? I'm kidding mike, I'm sorry :(), RPG, Sondow (burnout?), Achlys (burnout?), Upth, Yoshi (time issues?), Psymar, genus (awesome issues?), Graph (pending response), Sky (inexperience issues?), Egg, Staf, flyby (filler issues?), Tails (pending response).

= 16 players.

I think this is doable; anyone interested should post here, or get someone to post on their behalf.

General Sonic / Re: SONIC CHRONICLES: The Dark Brotherhood
« on: January 14, 2008, 12:14:58 am »
I'm liking the way the game looks...but if Phantom Hourglass was any indication, the touchscreen controls will feel tacked on. A dpad is more than functional for movement and attack options, in fact preferable so you don't grind your screen to death...there's also the annoyance of your hand covering part of the screen. Let's not even cover the imprecision involved.

The art is gorgeous, if not a touch strange for a Sonic game...which I'd be willing to overlook because the genre is obviously incomparable. I'm not seeing any reason to buy the game yet though, it just looks like a generic, albeit artistically done, RPG.

Supposedly there's a twist in the game that has implications in the original Genesis games. That will be interesting. I expect that info to leak a day afterwards, along with pictures of the cutscene in question, just like Sonic getting a spear to the throat in 06.

MOVING ON.

I love the idea of developing Sonic as more of a fighter. He can't just spindash all the time his whole life.

Mentally index this part, store it for future use.

Quote from: Egg
But everyone said Secret Rings would be good because it's focuses about SPEED Sonic is all about SPEED, now we get Sonic Chronicles and it focuses on.. oh hell who knows what.

"Developing Sonic as a fighter". Giving him depth. From the looks of it a respectable CASH COW, an oddity. That's what the game's trying to do.

Quote from: Egg
The part where Egg bashes people for calling 06 crap and Secret Rings good

People were actually optimistic involving 06 until the demo was released on live. They'd heard about problems at e3, but everyone thought they would be rectified...after all it was a very early build. However the demo, so close to the game's release, killed the hope many had for 06. Whereas Secret Rings, unplayed at the time, still looked promising. It wasn't praised for being "classic Sonic", it was praised for looking like a genuinely fun arcade-style Sonic game in a different style with little opportunity for the glitches that plagued previous 3D entries in the series.

Quote from: Egg
The part where Egg says only spinoff games can do well anymore, and people only like this game from what they've seen because it's not made by Sega.

Well sure, people are jaded from Sonic now, and they're naturally inclined to dislike the games...but that's only because Sega never seems to go that extra mile and they've mismanaged major games. Say what you will about 06 being underrated, unfairly maligned, but it's clear that there could have been much more in the game. People are excited about this game because it's from an acclaimed studio with a track record of consistant excellency, one that does not disappoint fans, not because it's not a mainstream Sonic game. Bioware will not rush themselves unduly to finish a game. Get it right Egg!

If Sega were to show that they're willing to commit time to games instead of churning them out then yeah, the major games would be better received. As Rolken once put it succintly, and I can think of no better way of wording this, "good games don't come out in time for the holiday season". You might not think so, but Secret Rings took a fair beating in reviews for being so obviously rushed...it's not some bizarre prejudice against the 360 or PS3 on the part of fans, or for whatever reason you think people don't like 06 (hatred of 3D games? I'm not really sure why you think people don't like 06) neither game was really that great. And as I just said...Bioware will not rush themselves unduly to finish a game. Get it right Egg!

Just a few things for you to consider.

Gaming and Grazing / Re: I think I want to make a video game-based CCG...

It doesn't matter what you want Magnum, it matters what we think other people will want. And FF7 is the definitive Final Fantasy game, love it or hate it. But it's not as though we need to limit ourselves to one hero character per series. Get over it!

You're also making the game overly complex. Elements should only be a factors in the games where they were in the original because that's what we want this to be...why does the fact that Mario is a human of type (x) mean he does (x) damage by default? Mario didn't play that way, so we won't need to have it, or want to have it because you're bogging the game down with cumbersome details.

I'm still forming a few ideas which I'll post tomorrow. It's all in the wording.

Until then I have a question we need to consider. How long do we want this to take?

126
This game sounds made for masochists, I'll fit right in.

I'll be using SnatchIt to record my attempts, and upload the videos to YouTube, linking them in this topic. I'll provide a little flavor text as well. Tomorrow it begins.

Those are some wonked out ideas ieatatsonic. Here are the most noteworth 'oldschool' franchises in gaming as I see them along with who would be represented. I listed multiple characters for some games that have a few memorables...maybe we want to give the player a few choices on who to use?

Mario (Mario, Yoshi, Luigi)
Sonic (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles)
Metroid
Megaman
Pokemon (Pikachu, Lucario, Munchlax, etc. Take your pick of all 493)
Street Fighter (Ryu, Ken, Akuma, etc.)
Final Fantasy (Oh christ. Cloud comes to mind immediately, but there are other protagonists worth considering)
Castlevania (Simon Belmont, Erik Lecard, Alucard, etc.)
Zelda

And the 'modern' series of note:

Halo
Phoenix Wright
Guitar Hero (Grim Reaper...comedy option Slash, etc.)
Katamari Damacy
God of War
Fire Emblem (only really got popular recently, hence the listing here)
Smash Bros. (It's certainly a different way to play)
Metal Gear
Resident Evil (Leon, Claire, Chris, etc.)

I'm probably forgetting some important franchises...but hey. I'll think more about how we'll actually handle levels tomorrow, I'm very tired you know.

I do like the idea, but execution will get sticky. I recall a similar excursion (sort of) attempt at a Sonic card-style game (using the gcgsomething program) that failed because of too many ideas. Don't get hung up on thinking of so many maverick ideas that the game goes nowhere.

I think there is more potential if you allow a second (or third even) player to play the "bad guy" role, controlling cards. Obviously their method of operation would be a touch different...they would be given cards that are immediately powerful (not overwhelmingly so, mind, the other player deserves a chance) but that will not be upgradeable. The problem with this is that a hero could become overpowered due to a poor level on the part of the bad guy. To counter this you'd either need to buff the bad guy's cards, nerf the hero from level to level, or cripple their potential powerups...we'll deal with this later though.

For now I think we need to assemble a development team though. It will be abhorrently hard to piggyback on any existing ui's (unless we try making this an IRC script)...I think we'll need to invent a new interface, which will take coders and artists. If you know someone interested in this project then contact them. We may see some support from TSC as well, since there are some talented (plural word). Personally I'm on board, but I'm only really able to help with theoretics and writing if any is required.

I don't have much else to say now but I know there's more I could-cut me some slack, I'm very tired.

So I was describing a particularly difficult level in Contra 4 (Harbor for all interested parties) in chat, when Upth tells me it doesn't sound too hard compared to some homebrew games he's played. So now at this point I'm interested...I do love a hard game, and anything that makes Contra look easy must be absolutely brutal. I ask Upth which of this type of games he considers the hardest. He says instantly I Wanna be the Guy.

I know nothing of this game. I haven't seen the video I'm linking to...if it's a rickroll blame Upth. For amusement's sake I'm going to try playing and beating this game, recording videos of my attempts (via a program that records keystroke input...does anyone know of any good options for this?), which I'll then post here for all to watch.

I would like several of my gaming accomplishments noted (those that are relevant anyways):

-I was formerly able to consistantly clear, with no difficulty, the original Contra (including the second, hard mode playthrough you play once the game is beaten), Super C, and Contra III: The Alien Wars (on its hardest difficulty) without the use of the Konami code.
-...well actually, that's it in terms of merciless games I've beaten. They don't make hard games anymore and aside from these games I have done very little retroplaying.

I won't start playing until Thursday. Until then do speculate as to my prospective attempts.

Well Upth's refusing to play any games with me because I violated a pact I made with him in another game (anyone interested can watch the video here.

The deal was that we would gang up on Achlys because he was a threat. I would attack Achlys in North America if Upth wouldn't attack me in Australia. This being my first game, and because of my complaints that I was in a bad position (out of sheer ignorance for the workings of the game, that I said this to manipulate him I do not contend), Upth agreed. Meanwhile I contacted Achlys to tell him I would attack Upth, but also get through to him in order to gain Upth's trust. I took a longer path to Achlys that netted me some of Upth's territory, even though he told me not to do so, keeping both agreements partly intact. He didn't make a big deal out of it at the time but took offense.

Once Achlys was no longer a threat, I spread across Upth's territories to cut off his bonuses. In so doing I invoked his anger, and he said he no longer wanted to play Risk with me. He reclaimed his lands next turn. I cashed in my cards, conquered Achlys, and all but wiped Upth off the map. RPG took him out to gain Upth's cards and was about to launch his own attack when the game ended because it was accidently set as a team game. Because I did not attack RPG at all this game, Upth is alleging I opted to end the game in a draw so I could claim victory on my part was imminent. I deny this as well.

In the drama that ensued he demanded an apology, and I offered one that made it look as though he was overly demanding; this in itself probably would have ended the dispute had I not followed it up with the line "Would you like a pound of flesh as well?". Upth left #awbw (by the way we're using this as a launching point for Risk games) because I was being facetious. I attempted to ammend the situation in the main room by producing several other apologies, this time admitting I was wrong ("I realize I was a dick, I promise not to do it again in future games and I will honor the terms of all agreements, implied and explicitly stated"), but Upth did not accept it on the grounds that he thought I was being insincere. He blocked me; sporadically he would explain that I was "a weasel", "an asshole", a whiner, etc. etc. etc, and that he would not play Risk with me again (this time in public, which carries more severity). He went to bed.

I don't know what this means for the current TSC WW2 game; whether Upth will refuse to play future games with me or will end all present games I am involved in.

I would like to apologize; yes I was wrong, I did exploit a technicality in our agreement and knew full well I was playing dishonorably. I will not do this in any other game, and will abide by my stated allegiances. In defending myself I recognize I was defending a singular mindset, and I was overly stubborn in defense of my fractured idea of sportsmanship to a point.

Even if you, Upth, do not believe I am speaking true then consider that to betray this statement of peacemaking would be infinitely more detrimental to my person than to have never made it in the first place and remained where I presently stand. Now that I have even gone public in my misdeeds my reputability is harmed so I have lost something allready. As such there is no reason to stonewall me. If there are any other conditions pursuint to pacifying you I will meet them with vim and vigor.

What is your response?

« on: December 26, 2007, 04:26:19 pm »
So far I've gotten to stage 3 on Normal. That Tyranid like boss in stage 2 seems to be weak against the laser weapon. Killed it before it got to use its platform grab move and then just after the second form's first barrage of shots. I love the practical joke the game plays on you with the first boss. It's been years since I've had a serious Contra session so I'm rusty. The normal gun just sucks. The R weapon is more like the default weapon you get in Contra 3 (good times). Never knew that bit of history regarding Super C and avoiding scandal.

No boss has a set "weakness", each weapon does the damage it would normally do. The laser is an absurdly strong gun though, so it knocks bosses out very quickly. I forgot to mention that they toned down the Flamethrower bigtime, and there's no reason to pick it up anymore because it doesn't do the damage it once could. Shame! The laser, spreadshot, machinegun, and homing are powerful as ever though, which is good.

I'm getting better at the game...I cleared Easy last night and have been playing Challenge mode. The last challenge I cleared was 'Rematch 1'. Apparently almost everything is unlocked by playing through challenge mode...I've unlocked the original Contra and Super C.

I gave both a few playthroughs, but I'm rusty. I can't get very far...in Super C I can't beat the second level, in Contra the third, which is funny since I used to be able to clear the games with almost no difficulty. My playtime between the three games included will be spread thin. Seriously, this is a solid amount of raw game.

I found out the name of the game clerk (the store was GameStop by the way) who advised my parents against getting GH3...he was fired for being a smartass. He told a customer they had poor taste in games so the manager canned him...this after several warnings from his supervisor. No compensation from the store though, which is a shame. If any of you know anyone named 'Jeff' then I wholeheartedly encourage you to give them hell. Undoubtedly if we target every Jeff, we'll stumble upon this one eventually.

We opened stockings today, and I got more stuff!

1) An exorbitantly large candycane the size of a billy club. I don't even like candycanes though! Tragic.
2) Acne face wash...even though I don't have acne?
3) A reading light that comes with a pen. Why would they package these two things together?
4) A chocolate cookie in a tin. Arbitrary.
5) Hand sanitizer. I think I'll create a strain of highly virulent bacteria immune to conventional antibiotics, starting with those found in hand sanitizer.
6) A heating pack. These things are great.

I am annoyed that I got acne face wash and not Guitar Hero 3. I'll keep everyone updated on the status of this clerk situation; I'm taking a trip to the store tomorrow.

Anyways since almost everyone got games for Christmas, I say we all keep track of our progress through these games here and how we find them. That would be GREAT.

In Contra 4, I can clear the first three levels on hard fairly consistently. The first level I can breeze through without dieing, aside from something freak like getting stuck with a bad weapon, or dropping through a floor by mistake. The second level is only hard in the beginning really, but I keep losing lives there. Those lizards come onscreen too quickly to snipe them individually so the ground is dangerous, and you can't just hang on the ceiling while the zombies explode. The waterfall section afterwards is easy enough though; you just need the spreadshot and it's a matter of simple platforming. Level 3 is a base level, and those are always easy. Whereas level 4 is some insane level I can barely handle on the Easy difficulty. There's a section where you need to scale a catwalk while being attacked by a large swarm of bird robots, with powerups scattered throughout the area. Eventually you climb onto a nuclear weapon, and a robot starts trying to punch you off the rail you're climbing on. To dodge him you need to jump off the rail to the right, and move back quickly. His attacks are really fast though, and I can't beat him on hard since I almost always die and lose my weapon.

I've played easy twice; the first time I got a gameover on level 4, which has some absurd platforming section where you have to jump from rung to rung on the nuke while dodging missiles. I'm in the middle of my second run, and I'm on level 7 with 6 lives and 4 continues; iirc this is the last level Easy mode can reach. Normal I haven't touched, but it seems the next logical step.

As for the game itself, I have few complaints. It's a solid Contra experience...it doesn't arbitrarily differ from what made the games good to start with. I do have some nitpicks though. The default gun is too weak for my liking, and dieing removes your equipped weapon; if you die at the wrong time you're pretty much guaranteed a gameover since it takes too many hits to down things. I'm also not a fan of the weapon change system...there's a reserve slot for an extra weapon, but it starts off equipped with the default gun. To keep a reserve weapon you need to switch guns, leaving you vulnerable to enemy attacks. This wasn't a problem in previous games since the default gun wasn't balls, but now it's hard to defend yourself in the meantime. There's also the problem of not being able to fire while climbing, which has caused me a ton of deaths...but I think this was in other Contras too, so my complaint isn't exclusive to this game. And, and, and! It's very easy to fall through floors by mistake because almost every floor can be passed through, and the command to drop through floors is jump+down. I've had bad moments where I've tried jumping and firing straight down, only to fall through the floor and die.

However it is still a pro game and everyone else needs to get Contra 4 so we can talk about Contra 4 and how great it is.

EDIT: Magnum posted while I was writing. OH SNAP, YOU HAVE CONTRA 4 TOO! How far can you get and on what difficulty? Let's compare high scores.

We open gifts a day early in my house; lazy parents who don't want to wake up.

What I asked for
1)GH3 Wii (priority)
2)Contra 4
3)L'Estranger by Albert Camus
4)We by someone whose name I forget

What I actually got
1)Contra 4
2)A fake parrot that swears (says "Polly wants a fucking cracker" and such)
3)$125 USD worth of certificates to Walden Books/Borders
4)Sigmeund Freud action figure

And possibly some other nonsense with stockings. I didn't get GH3; the clerk at the games store told my parents how it sucked, the sound quality was bad, it was unplayable for the Wii because of a lack of dlc, etc. Obviously I'm not going to gripe about this to them because I received some very nice gifts; however, I'll still find this guy's name out and lodge a complaint. Assuming he's still around at the end of the season, which is a dubious prospect since there's such a high turnover rate at these stores. What an asshole.

I thought I was getting a laptop as a surprise gift because of a conversation I overheard between my parents discussing computers, and I heard my name mentioned; turns out this was for an accessory my sister was getting for hers.

Oh well.

Do expand your point so that others either recognize its merit and change how they think of my ideas, or can dismiss you as making no sense; otherwise you saying something like that doesn't serve any purpose, aside from hoping someone thinks you smarter for agreeing with them.

Do not spare my feelings, I want none of that and would like a breakdown of why what I suggested is a bad idea. I consider myself objective...go ahead, sway me.

<genus> 06 is markedly low
<genus> in the number of players
<genus> granted we are more a Nintendo-favoring community than anything else
<genus> there are still not enough people competing in 06 to justify its addition after the fact

Like I was saying, I do not believe 06 has any procreative value as a venue of competition but this is irrelevant. If we were to not focus on Sonic specifically, there is no way we would ever track 06.

Quote from: Egg
And I can't speak for the others but I for one had fun competing in it.

Aside from DSS and s&a (who doesn't count anyways), I think you're alone there.

So you see that Sonic06 has 24 competitors and therefore deserved a spot in the rankings to begin with...this compared to 161 from Sonic 1, 140 from Sonic 2, 112 for Sonic 3, 91 from Sonic Rush so you can't claim interest in general is just waning as time goes on, even 73 from Shadow, etc. Such a large discrepancy should tell you that people aren't really interested in playing 06.

If you notice, only 'regulars' hold good rankings in 06...I'm willing to bet most bought the game only to have a bid at a championship. A situation like this is not conducive to competition...once people realize how hard it would be to take the top spot in a game, they just don't care.

The remainder of the chart is filled with the normal crowd of people, with noticeably sparse submissions. I'd say '06 is a failure in terms of competition.

Quote from: Egg
It has 24 competitors, about the same amount as Secret Rings, and way more than Sonic Rivals.

Neither of which we would track if we were to change the scope of the site to include other games. If we diversified the games we were to track, we wouldn't be allowing competition for every single game that came out for a franchise to avoid bulkiness...in spite of what you may think of Secret Rings or Sonic Rivals, neither were really that anticipated and would most likely only garnish a small crowd of competitors. You're applying our current standards of adding games to a prospective future method of assessment, which really shouldn't be done in this context.

Quote from: Egg
And since it initially took so long to put up, there was a forum topic dedicated to it.

I'll look for that in a while. On a hunch, I'm gonna say it's only a few people pushing for its addition...I will confirm (or disconfirm) this later.

Quote from: Magnum
1. If we add in Mario and Mega Man alone, we add in some great games to play and compete in. From MM, the Zero series and Powered Up are the flag ship in terms of competition. The only real stinkers MM has for competition I can think of are MMX6, MMX7, and the fighters.

But I'm not suggesting we add whole franchises in, only popular games with a generally disorganized fanbase. We tried tracking whole franchises once, remember? It's what we have now...and we'll be in the same situation if we continue to track bad games.

Do you mean the 'stinkers' are bad games as a whole, or impossible to compete in? Bad games would not be tracked...they are not relevant because nobody enjoys them, or wants to compete in them.

Our goal here should be to encourage competition in games people enjoy, not to just have a few people grimacing when they play games to take a championship.

Quote from: Magnum
3. The addition of so many great (and diffferent) games might be the morale kick in the pants we've been needing.

I agree wholeheartedly; TSC needs fresh games to compete in because competitors have taken a pragmatic stance on their standing ("Oh, I'll never beat (person x)", "I'll never be above (place y)", "I can't play (level z)")...more games make people anxious to gun for the top spot (not what we want really, but still positive because any activity in a game is good), and piques interest.

News and Updates / Re: Where are we, where are we going?
« on: December 22, 2007, 02:41:03 pm »
There was an INVOLVED discussion in the chat the other day which most of you missed but that is still relevant. Basically a few of us (Rolken, yoshifan, Mike as well I believe, SJ, p discussed the future of TSC, and it went PLACES. I lost the log, but retained the main points.

Basically the main Sonic games, not spinoffs like SRA, aren't very good so it's attracting an ignorant fanbase to the site. Because of this we are not gaining respectable members since nobody in their right mind would enjoy these abominations; most of our new users are either morons or under 12.

As such we need to either merge subsites with the main games and branch out to new trackables, or expand to the online games scene. The issue with the former is that most reputable series have established competitive scenes, and there are very few new franchises around, let alone good new franchises that are competition-worthy. We also run the risk of become Cyberscore Jr, overextending ourselves so the mods are uninformed about the games being tracked and mostly apathetic towards their competition developments. We're allready there, I'd say; none of the 'respected' members play Rivals, and when Rivals2 eventually goes up (it will) they really won't care. This is only going to continue as Sega churns out game after game, most of which won't be given a fair shake because of the major letdown that was Sonic 06.

If we do decide to track more games, we must be selective in what we choose to track. Quality should be a factor here; nobody wants to compete in bad games. Obviously there are a few undesirable games we track now (Rivals, Heroes, 06, Shadow, more, more, more); were we to attempt to broaden the site's focus we would need to consider more carefully what players would want to...play. Obviously we can't very well undo game additions, since someone is going to get shafted from that many rankings removed from the site and it just isn't fair for whoever competed, but in the future we must be more careful.

For the latter suggestion, we would attempt to act as a hub for people who enjoy online games, only in a more general fashion than the lobbies usually present. Think of something along the lines of, say, rankings for Toulose, Magic, AWBW, and all these other fads compounded to show who is just generally good at online games; in conjunction with rankings for single-player games, I believe this would be a first.

Every now and then traditional tournaments (player vs. player and not something like our current situation with challenges) would be held for certain ranked games; from that players would either gain or lose placing overall. Not enough to entirely shift the tides of rankings, but still with sufficient weight to boost status in that game. I imagine there would also be a matchmaking service of sorts for players looking to play in certain games. A matchmaking service not called 'the chatroom'.

Here I see many issues, though. We'll definitely be stretching ourselves thin; fads are by nature shortlived. Nobody plays, say, Pokemon anymore because they found something better, so you'll have a small pool of people interested in a fad at once, making it almost impossible for new users to get a foothold in the rankings. And even if they continue playing, there will be such a large gap from the top dogs to the newbies that most will be discouraged from even playing; after all, it would take an age to reach the top spot, as progress is so slow with your only chance to improve dependant on the schedule of others. There's also the problem of an honor code...if one person reports a false outcome, what would happen? We would side with the more respected member by default...which would definitely increase tensions between players. In the event of two unknowns we wouldn't care which would also spark conflict.

Of the two ideas I am more fond of the first; in either case I think a name change is imperative. The name 'The Sonic Center' isn't even fitting now with subsites...it will be especially irrelevant with the advent of change.

Just a few things to think about where we're going...as for where we are, I see a niche community getting bored of what it has and wanting more, which Sonic Team sadly does not seem able to supply.

1-UP!

Mike you are going to get ravaged by truth, and Stefan why a separate topic for something outlandish someone said?

While we're still spouting crazy ideas, I bet Luigi is a boring Mario clone again, with the Poltergust instead of FLUDD. I know, nonsensical :/

142
Well my roster is looking better than yours!

(At the moment anyways...once my Felix/Isaac, Mii/Animal Crosser, Megaman/Pacman, and K. Rool nonsense hits the fan things will level out)

Anyways, it's a shame Sakurai isn't going the extra mile with making characters playable...Little Mac, Saki, and Stafy as boring AT's only kind of depresses me. These are original characters getting the shaft, which is a shame. Though you know that there will be some crazy, left-field characters that nobody sees coming, which makes up for it. If there are no 'nonsense' characters, then I full-well reserve my right to complain about how Sakurai wasn't nearly creative enough in character inclusion. Except for some lame characters/AT, like Waluigi, who just aren't interesting enough to include in the game. Speaking of which, apparently Waluigi curbstomps people he doesn't like while grinning in a deluded fashion.

Moving on...no new information was released from CoroCoro magazine today, it was all recycled information from the Dojo. No information on the full roster until January 25 guys :(

And moving on from moving on, the guitar portion of the Ice Climber song is amazing. The song itself is schizophrenic though...it can't decide whether it wants to be a slowpaced, 'epic' song or a diecore rock sort of thing.

A+ post here Thorn. The comedic value rivals the quality of my posts, though it's not there yet. Don't get discouraged though; keep on trucking!

I'd attach 'Ds' to my nick in chat, but I don't compete so my allegiance means nothing. I pledge, however, that if he is on the verge of winning any tournaments, I will reprise my role as 'tourney destroyer' and bring a huge fucking Metal Sonic recolor down on the whole shebang.

This is a momentous occasion.

For the first time in TSC, an AWBW match has finished.

MY GOD.

A summary of the game, as best I remember it, will follow, but those without the patience for a glossy narration can see the full replay here.

Sondow (Orange Star, Andy) vs. Genus (Blue Moon, Sami) on the map A simple 1 vs. 1, fog of war on.

So I was against Sondow in this map, and I figured I would play Sami because Sami is an amazing CO when used properly. Sondow played Andy for...some reason. I'm not sure what, really.

So this match gets a-rolling, and I realize off the bat there are 3 targets of major importance for me: the two airports, and the two bases down the road from both hq's. Realistically, I realize I'm only getting the airport and base nearest my HQ, so the first thing I do is move my fta-counter infantry towards the uncaptured...base to the left. I do nothing else that turn. On the next I buy an infantry and apc, and end my turn. The apc leaves the base with a loaded infantry, and I reach the airport, dropping off the infantry to capture it on the next turn. The base is taken, the airport a given, and I think that I'll come across some of Sondow's units soon. I want quick cash for that, so I build a solitary infantry on one of the bases near my hq, to lay siege to the surrounding properties. I load the apc with another unit and figure I'll test the waters towards the south, not really caring about it that much. I get near the base towards the south, unload the infantry on a mountain, and notice there is nothing near me. I seize the opportunity, and capture the base. Meanwhile, I've started capturing bases, and I build a recon in the base to the west, figuring I'll scout out Sondow's action. My first real unit is built; a B-Copter. I'm not seeing Sondow on any fronts, but I'm nervous, afraid he's allready launched a capturing initiative down the middle of the map, which I couldn't deal with and that would give him a huge edge. As a result, I decide to strike quick and dirty; I bring my B-Copter between the mountains, and hit what I assumed was an unprotected infantry with my recon.

Then a tank comes out from nowhere and fires on me. I don't know this, but Sondow has a recon stationed right outside the woods of my HQ, keeping tabs on everything I'm doing at those bases (as you'll soon see, nothing). He's also made an antiair, which I can do nothing about...yet. I send my crippled recon on a suicide mission to see if Sondow captured the airport, and he had. I took a city north of the airport anyway, even though I knew the infantry was a dead unit; it would get me a few thousand funds in the meanwhile, and there was nothing else productive for it to do. Knowing he's playing with tanks and expecting a raid on the western base, I make one of Sami's phenomenal mechs to do a few things-let me see what he's doing on the airport, cripple a tank, maybe sack a city as well. Knowing he's not going to take that property anytime soon, I send my BCopter south to back the fledgling base I captured, wondering when the shit will hit the fan for my little communist buddies hanging out in the middle of nowhere.

For the hell of it, I unload an infantry from my APC down there into the woods to see if I can pull a surprise capture. I can't; the infantry gets killed that turn when his antiair stumbles upon it. I build a mech, and then a neotank; I intend to produce a T-Copter as well, since I think Sondow is strapped for funds at this point and want to try another capturing initiative. I've scouted the west with my mech on a mountain and a recon, and there's not much going on for him propertywise...his income is a paltry 8k, compared to my 12. Sighting a copter with my recon, I produce an anti-air on the southeast base, fire upon a capturing mech with a bcopter since I don't want it messing with my units, and twiddle my thumbs.

My psychic sense tingles; I know that antiair is ready to mess with my Bcopter, so I waste the infantry where Sondow can't get it. I position my Neo to strike the recon on his hq...and can't! I didn't know units in fow can't hit units they were unable to see prior to moving. The tcopter moves, it's loaded with my infantry, and I am locked and loaded with 14k income each turn.

His copter comes out of the woodwork and strikes my neotank; in retaliation I knock his copter out with my antiair. I strategically place a mech I've been carrying along with me in the rear into the woods, 4 squares away from his hq (Sami's co power gives him that mp), and fire on his recon. My co power is ready...but I want more and know once that gets charged this game is over. Feeling the love for indirects, and nervous about any surprise captures, I build an artillery for my hq and stash it in the woods. Another artillery to end any potential clogging on Sondow's end. My income is 15k; I can taste a bomber, so build one. The artillery is nearly in position...thinking it's worth a shot, and the loaded tcopter is going to do the same thing for my cause, I launch a capture with the mech on one of the bases adjacent Sondow's hq. He cripples the unit; whoops. My Neo's getting scuffed up by a copter, and is really useless for me at this point. I look at my CO bar, and notice it's not much longer until my scop is ready. A few minor skirmishes are happening on the north of the map, but the real action is near his headquarters.

Day 16; the Bomber's almost in range, the artillery is in the woods, and my tcopter...well, I forgot to unload my tcopter. Sondow guns it down with his antiair next turn, and it's a shame because the match would have ended day 17 if I weren't so careless. My Super CO Power is ready; an infantry is made on the southeast base for my end...all I need to do is get the infantry within 5 squares of his hq, and knock out whatever he has on that space. A copter's put on his hq to protect it; realizing he doesn't have much left in the way of money, I blast it with my antiair. An MD Tank takes care of it the next turn, which is a shame.

The gamewinning move though: I build a Megatank, and inch it towards his base, with an infantry hiding in the woods. My artillery is slaughtered, but I don't care; as long as I have the bomber and the megatank working together, I can destroy any feeble barrier he can put up. I cripple the antiair with my bomber, and the megatank plays cleanup crew, nuking a random recon I come across Sondow sent to spy on me. I build a recon of my own in the southeast base; I need to see the unit on the base to hit it, lesson learned. The recon spots the hq, protected by a lonely artillery. I knock that out, activate Sami's SCOP power, and take the headquarters that day, giving me the victory.

Results: genus (Sami, Blue Moon) defeats Sondow (Andy, Orange Star) in 19 days.

This is why Sami is one of my favorite CO's in the game.

CO information for the main game is pending; I'll edit this post later to make the uninformed informed.

SHAMEFUL DOUBLE AND HALF NECROMANCING POST

PsyBorg decided to be an asshole, and refused to take his turn because he was going to get soundly thrashed. For a solid week, he kept coming in to chat and leaving as soon as someone brought up AWBW. He's claiming it's because his chat client somehow launches by itself, and then connects to surrealchat without further prompting. He's saying he closes the window immediately, not noticing we've set off his highlight, which is just a heap of LIES. There's also this one connect session wherein he was active until seconds after I messaged him asking whether he was going to continue playing in the game. Minutes later he disconnects with his nonstandard quit message.

Yesterday he came back to say, more or less, "well I was going to lose so I figured I would quit". Because PsyBorg is an egotistical douchebag who can't stand the thought of anyone outperforming him in a game of intellect. He made such a big deal over how good he was supposed to be, and didn't want anyone seeing him live down to that. Looking back, he did the same thing every time someone beat him in Mario Kart-he'd make these lame-note excuses as to why someone beat him, and get upset when they did.

I even stood up for Psy, I did. When he didn't take his turn, and hadn't been on for a few days, we took a vote as to whether we wanted to boot Psy. I convinced everyone to give him time, that even though he was taking a long time to finish his turn, he would soon enough and we weren't giving him a fair shake. And then he does this. He resigns, and a solid week later. When he could have resigned the very day he quit the game, saved us all the effort of waiting. We pretty much had 8 people willing to jump in to another game when he walked away, but didn't start another, figuring he would take his turn, and if he chose to give up, he would have done that much sooner. But he didn't, and decided he wouldn't even own up to the fact he sucks, running away from running away. Because he's a punk. Everyone would do well to leave the chat, or begin idling, when he joins the room.

Enough about people you shouldn't associate with. We created a new game, 'Psy is Dumb', on the map Cesaro's Island, fog of war on, and it's going to get rolling soon. For players we have:

genus vs. Achlys vs. yse vs. Yoshifan vs. Graphyte Ronin vs. RPG vs. Sondow vs. Nile

CO/Country details to follow when the match begins.

{stuff}
I'm graduating in 8 days with my BS. (Go ahead and call it a bullshit degree, I'm joking about that already.)

Spinny noooooooooooooooooooo! A degree in business? Business?

You must hit rock bottom, then come to prominence as you reflect in written form on the crisis of your life due to a lack of prospects. You must. Because you have one of the most useless degrees obtainable.

Not to make you feel bad or anything.

Anyways, I was under the impression colleges always want to see you challenging yourself with higher level courses, as opposed to acing simpleton classes. You're enrolled in an Honors English class, right? Why? By your logic you shouldn't; a higher-level english isn't relevant to what you'd want to be. And even if what I've been saying is entirely offbase, not at all applicable, you can always make some claim involving quality of character to a college- 'oh look at me I never shy away from difficulties, and do not take the easy way out'.

Plus, history is relevant to understanding and predicting the events of the modern world-how things got to be the way they are, what will probably happen given the similarity of present events to those in the past, mistakes people have made in ventures you are attempting. Simply stated if you don't know how a movement or organization started, you are uninformed, likely to make errors others have long avoided due to some remarkable past examples, and don't count as a functioning member of society. A world history class is conducive to this; you'll find examples from the past that will make your argument more cohesive. The reason 'Godwin's law' exists is because it shows a lack of historical knowledge on the part of anyone who brings up Hitler. It's such a beaten horse case, and there are probably scores better that could be produced given a fuller knowledge of history that are not nearly so catch-all in a broad, convoluted way.

My argument is old, and you've heard it before. It's a shame my argument is old, and you've heard it before, but then again it's old, and you've heard it before, because it didn't let any other arguments murder it in the dead of night, or in middle of the day, or those ambiguous times between.

You legend! One of my favourite books!

I really don't think there's any reason to shun the English translation if you can't easily get (and read, though I assume you can) the French version, though. I haven't read the French, but, honestly, the translation I've read is just a very good book so it can't be bad. Don't make the assumption that it's "watered-down".

There are three translated versions, by Gilbert (earliest), Ward (most recent, translates title as "The Stranger"), and Laredo (the one I've read, Ward's translation seems pretty similar, though, titled "The Outsider"). Which one's available to you (I'm guessing Ward)?

I prefer reading books in the language they were originally written in. I feel something is lost by translation, no matter how solid the effort and how skilled the translator is, and there's bound to be a high degree of repetition and awkward phrasing by nature due to the lack of words from one language to the next. I'm sure the story is more or less intact, but prose takes a hit because some things just can't be transcribed. Look at, say, Shakespeare; one of his lines in English will be in iambic pentameter, but in Italian will break verse and won't flow so well. Maybe this isn't a valid comparison because meter is rhythmic, and the diction between two languages is rarely comparable, but small things like this just detract from a piece of work. And I won't get the book for a solid 2 weeks anyways-why not pull out for the version I'd like more? Worst case scenario, they don't have the french version and I'll read one of the translations. The bookstore had Ward's translation; I'll have to look into which translations are most accurate in the event I am unable to get the original.

Figuring that I would otherwise be unable to buy it, I bought "The Alphabet of Manliness" today.

However, there's a hard-to-find book I'm interested in, "L'Étranger" by Albert Camus...it's written in French, and the bookstore around here only has some watered-down English translation. For good measure replace "The Alphabet of Manliness" with"L'Étranger" on my list.

And more followed, and more was better! Symmetry be damned.

Metroid Prime 3 is stunning...and formulaic, linear, grandiose, on, on, on. There were no surprises in MP3-you're never ambushed by intimidating bosses like in the original, and to a lesser extent Echoes (whose common enemies were scary as hell, but really only had a few 'ahhhhhh' moments, like the troopers in the beginning resurrecting and random moments with Dark Samus). To face a key boss, you need to fly to a separate location and navigate your way through a few rooms which are identical from region to region. There's nothing nearly so petrifying as, say, the Omega Pirate busting out of its stasis tank from nowhere as you walked down an innocuous corridor in the first Metroid Prime with Prime 3, and it hurts the presentation value some. There are also some over-the-top segments that just feel overdone (there's a spiderball track in a room that you need to cross at least twice per game, probably more, as there's an upgrade in the room on the otherside that's hard to notice, which takes a solid 5 minutes to traverse...let's not forget either how many bosses have high health and all the multiphase battles you'll fight)

I have more to rant about! Much, much more! But for now I must reflect.
