How much of pi do you know?
« on: September 29, 2006, 03:18:03 pm »
The title means what is the value of pi that you know.  I know pi up to 37 decimal places.

3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841

Up to how many decimal places do you know?  I'll expect a lot of 3.14s in this topic, and not many others.

Perhaps I should be more specific.  How much of pi did you know before you read this topic?

Before this topic, I knew and still only know 3.14.

At my peak, I had 1011 digits (no, that's not binary for eleven).  I've probably slipped back to about 500 by now since I haven't put it to any use in so long.

Before this topic, I knew 3.14159265358.  But I still get away with using 22/7 in Calc BC class, so ah well.

I should get my friend Ian to read this topic. He used to know it to about 600.

Unfortunately even 37 is beyond me, I know about 15.

3.14159265357989...

And my friends in school were impressed at me knowing the first 37 decimal places.  I had shown my one friend it, written down, and he told me to write it again, but on a different sheet of paper while he held the original.  When I finished, he compared the papers, and called me a "genius" (they matched perfectly).

3.14159265358979323846
   26433832795028841971
   69399375105820974944
   59230781640628620899
   862803

So 86 decimal places.  It's the most I've ever memorized, but I know it pretty well.

Well, it is binary for eleven, but I suppose saying 101110 would suffice. (But no subscript is just assumed decimal, since you didn't say 10112 or anything like that.)

I only know so far as 3.14159265358979323846264. I believe my brother is up to 46 or 50 or something.

Yeah, F-Man has us all beat.

I know very little pi. Before reading this topic, I knew 3.1415. But generally pi is approximated, and so it doesn't matter much. Unless a very precise answer is needed, such as in physics. In which case, 22/7 is a time saver. As is the 'Pi' button on a scientific/graphing calculator.

Though why commit (x) ammount of digits in pi to memory when you could always spend that time learning a new algorithim?

I HOPE YOU DO

I was never told (in my schoolwork) to memorize more than the symbol π (duh), 3.14, or 22/7,
but I still knew 3.14159. I don't know how much I could memorize if I tried.
I know I could get a few more digits almost effortlessly (though there are more useful things
to memorize), and maybe I could surprise myself and memorize dozens or hundreds.
I don't think of myself as being really good with memory (except at memorizing a short thing
very quickly), but it seems easier to memorize stuff than I expect.

Why is it always Pi? Why do people never discuss how many decimal points they know e to, or the golden ratio, or root 2? These irrational numbers are just as significant. Oh so you know one irrational number to lots of decimal places, good for you. It's hardly an achievement, what use does it serve? It's not like you'll use the actual value of Pi without a calculator, so you're hardly going to key in 389572957 digits when there's a Pi button.

Male competitiveness, of course.

Also, you fucking win for bringing up the Golden Ratio.

CF is just angry because he only knows pi as 3. :P
Just kidding, I already said it's pointless.

Male competitiveness, of course.

Also, you fucking win for bringing up the Golden Ratio.

And you win for recognising its awesomeness.
