Charts updated. I had screwed up a few things here and there before, but I guess that's what happens for rushing the job <_< Regardless, all should be well in these fresh charts.

If anyone who decides to use these finds anything wrong with them, let me know.

ks8, I took the liberty of putting all your past stats as of 3-13-2008 into a single html file via Microsoft Excel.

Explanation: This whole incident gave me motivation to get started on my crazy idea of creating a functional, uniform way to fully archive my stats off-site in a single workbook. I'll release a blank template for others to use once it's finished, although I doubt anyone besides me will use it.

Maybe I'll start competing again once it's done, as well :)

Edit: Here's the new .xls version, ks8, as promised.

To clarify, the Sonic Shuffle charts were added to the TUSC section of the site, not the TSC, and they're still up at this very moment. That topic many months back was completely serious in announcing the charts having gone up.

Wikkity! / Re: ITT "All I know, I learned from TSC."
« on: October 19, 2008, 07:28:59 pm »
I learned it's always worth looking at things from many different angles and points of view, as most of the different sides have valid points as to why they feel about issues as they do. As a direct relation, I've realized it's unwise to state things in a "definite truth" fashion, as that may mentally shut out communications with others on an issue, creating unnecessary conflict and making it difficult to reach a compromise.

After this simple revelation, I've become less introverted over my time here at TSC and have gotten more comfortable expressing my opinions in general, always being sure to collect information from multiple sources and viewpoints on an issue before passing judgment and trying to express WHY I feel the way I do instead of just HOW.

Also, I learned winning isn't everything; it's the experience that really matters.

Directly relating to your ghosting issues, the second major batch of DS Lites produced are known to have this issue due to lower quality screens being used during production. This problem isn't present in DS Phats or first-gen DS Lites, so chances are you have a second-gen DS Lite.

You could order new screens if it's really bothersome.

Gaming and Grazing / Re: New DS coming with camera and music compatible
« on: September 30, 2008, 01:53:44 am »
My best guess is the music would be supported by an SD card slot, and it would only support major formats like mp3 and wav. Nintendo's all about producing things at a low budget to target the largest audience possible, so throwing in a few unnecessary basic components which are already largely available on other portable devices, given they'll probably use cameras with low resolution and such to lower the cost, could result in a lower quality product all around.

They advertise that said features might be able to be used in games, but honestly, how many games could effectively implement such features, and how many of said games would be produced, given they wouldn't want to shut out current DS owners to avoid losing game sales?

If they offered a DS with larger screens, more internet security compatibility, and maybe tweak the elevation of a couple buttons, it would be a more worthwhile upgrade, and it wouldn't cost Nintendo all that much more to produce, anyhow. Or, if they REALLY want to sell me on a new DS, how about built-in TV output functionality, eh? It's already been done unofficially, after all, and I, for one, would be willing to pay a higher price tag for it.

As for music on the DS, in the off chance you're not using something else, there's already third-party options for the DS as it is. Why bother to build it into the system?

News and Updates / Re: Poll: The Rankings And You!
« on: September 16, 2008, 07:54:07 pm »
Your second point first, I agree. The rankings only get accurately color coordinated when a certain number of stats have been submitted. I tend to think of that number as somewhere from 8-10.

Your first point is more complicated because we have no real definition as to what "easy" is defined as when used to describe TSC's competition. Personally, having experienced S&K ring attacking, I find S1 rings very easy... Scrap Brain 1 only required an hour or two of practice for me to get originally :( All it required of me was that I felt like figuring out the route on how to do it.

Also, concerning Scrap Brain 1, might I note that 9 people were originally on the Scrap Brain 1 ring chart before i put my video up in February? There's 15 people there now :( It seems as if my videos for Sonic 1's Rings division made most Sonic 1 rings redundant, degenerative, noob fodder, ect. The point - plotting the strategies + recording them + providing them has destroyed Sonic 1 Rings exclusivity.

I agree with this. Rings and scores are only challenging when you aren't provided the information of how to get them. If you've got that, there's not much to it, except maybe patience where ? ring containers are involved. Are people really proving anything by following the crowd for a few generic stats, or investing countless hours in hopes of getting the better result by complete chance? Tying into what Shadow Jacky pointed out, does it make sense for people to only have an edge because they might know something someone else doesn't, especially when they'll quickly lose this edge upon the information's discovery? I do not see the relevance.

Times are a different story. People can be shown the exact route the best time has taken, and still struggle to get even remotely close to it. Also, assuming you can duplicate your movements exactly, there's no random factors, just skill. You can improve upon yourself by perfecting techniques and devising new strategies, maybe even developing routes of your own. That's more the concept of what competition should be in my mind.

News and Updates / Re: Poll: The Rankings And You!
« on: September 15, 2008, 11:09:46 pm »
Meh, I never liked rings and scores, and would likely compete more if they just disappeared, but at the same time, I believe there's a strong religious following for these categories amongst the ranks, and the likely rebellion from these cultist groups of followers upon the removal of their staple of life could possibly collapse the world as we know it from the inside out.

Given a large sum of the rings and scores throughout the games have a definite cap, though, and a large quantity of luck is involved in many accounts (most notably in newer additions to the franchise), I don't see the validity or purpose of rings and scores in most games after the Genesis collection. They should definitely stay for the older games, though (Sonic 1-3, S&K, etc.), to appeal to RA and SA fans, if nothing else.

My final opinion on the matter: Scores and rings for newer games should either be removed or moved to freestyle, but there's no reason to tamper with the older games.

I still think all 3 of them will be better than SSR was.
I'm honestly looking forward to Chronicles. Unleashed is looking a little shaky due to framerates, though, and I still don't know what to think of Black Knight.

Did you enjoy the old Mario games, but tired of them because they're so easy? Then it's time to try a polar opposite. Here are a couple rather famous hacks of the classic SMB and SMW games, that were designed specifically to make your life difficult. The level design is nothing short of ingenius, if not hilariously cruel.

You can download all three of them here:

That was well worth reading all the way through. You make some excellent points.

Sonic Adventure's relations to actual real-world locations intrigued me significantly, and even caused me to do some research on Mayan civilization, lightly touching on everything from customs to why they aren't around anymore. Even moreso, I was surprised they tied in actual Mayan mythology and symbolism throughout the game in addition to physical locations. In this respect, I'd say Sonic's connection to the real world was at its finest in this game. It still had a cinematic feel, though, this much was obvious. After that, it seems attempts to tie in aspects you mentioned have been nothing but downhill. Sonic Adventure 2 was pretty good, Sonic Heroes was tolerable, it was painful for me to play through Shadow the Hedgehog, I couldn't bear to finish Sonic and the Secret Rings, and although I can't rightfully have an opinion on Sonic 06, I guess it could have fared better. Everything has become convoluted, cinematic efforts over game play are increasingly obvious, and Sega's attempts to play into the latest trends have made things worse. I still enjoy most that were considered "spin-off" games, however, including Sonic Advances 1-3, Sonic Rush, and Sonic Battle. This might have something to do with the differing focuses in game play, music, and art styles compared to the more mainstream games.

Mario has kept his strength throughout the years, and whenever a major Mario game comes out, I never know what to expect: everything always seems creative and unique. Things happen that just don't make sense, and that's why people like it. Even Mario's RPG's seem to try to break away from the traditional formula, while still tying in core game play aspects. They always experiment with new graphic styles, and the worlds they create are always colorful and eye-catching, with subtle jokes and details that some people might not even notice.

I believe most of the strength of a game, assuming it has decent mechanics, lies in its art-style, musical score, and sound quality (including the presence or absence of voice acting). Real-world environments are beginning to feel bland and unexciting since they're used so often; this has really hurt Sonic's presentation as of late. Also, music in Sonic's more recent games (after Sonic Adventure 2) hasn't been necessarily bad, but it just feels like background music; it doesn't make me feel immersed in the game. Games with a unique style and musical score such as "The World Ends With You", "Jet Grind Radio", "Okami", and "Space Channel 5" have been received very positively by the public. They all tried new game play aspects, but they still made sure the presentation was crisp and fresh, which ultimately held the games together.

Regarding upcoming Sonic games, I almost feel that Sega is "ripping off" Mario with this new RPG for the DS, only trying an RPG with Sonic since it worked for Mario. Their approach of using recycled Sonic X artwork is questionable (tying back in to art being a key aspect in the success of a game), and I hope the multiple endings don't end up like what happened in Shadow the Hedgehog. Bioware has an impressive record, however, so hopefully they can still pull it off. I still don't know what to think of Sonic & the Black Knight, and would prefer not to jump to any conclusions this early on.

I have zero interest in Sonic Chronicles and its white bordered Sonic X artwork.
I've gotta say this is my largest turn-off of the game, as well. With a team of amazing artists and access to plenty of 3D resources, couldn't Bioware have done better than recycling Sonic X artwork and images? That's pure laziness right there.

Seriously, if SEGA wants to try a new game genre targeting a new audience, can't they be arsed to just make a new character line-up?

...I should work out more, all I've got going for me is my leet DDR skills and high endurance.

In other words, I need more upper body strength, a must for ninja-style stunts and breakdancing, both of which I'd like to practice at some point.

86
Hmmm...I'd say there's no such thing, but I'd be lying. For the most part, I had a pretty good idea they were bad games before buying them (I try to always do my research beforehand), but thought I'd give them a chance, given the series they were a part of.

Games I completely regret buying:
-Yoshi: Topsy Turvy (Not my fault, twas a gift. What a waste of plastic.)
-Commander Keen: GBC sequel (The actual name fails me, but it put the PC versions of Commander Keen games to shame. Total impulse buy, I should've gotten the generic casino game instead...)
-Bomberman Hero (Hey, where's the multiplayer? What kind of Bomberman game doesn't have multiplayer?!)

Games I might still buy for significantly less money than what I paid:
-Sonic & the Secret Rings (This game needed GCN control options to compensate for its sub-par Wii control schemes, and the music was lacking.)
-Shadow the Hedgehog (recycled SH polygons clashing with new style, tedious collecting missions, and somewhat ridiculous storyline branching ruined this game for me.)
-Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus (WAY too linear with no interactive surroundings, aka a hallway setup, and nothing short of pathetic AI. It has nice CG sequences, though, so it might be worth watching on Youtube in movie form, minus the horrid gameplay.)
-Metroid Prime: Pinball (When compared to similar pinball games, this game is disappointing. I just wanted the DS rumble pack for Starfox DS. There was no other way to get it at the time.)

87
I've got the Wii version.
While single player isn't very exciting after you've thoroughly played through all the events, it's still good for multi-player, in my opinion.

Leaderboard Disputes / Re: ATTN: Shadowfan
« on: April 22, 2008, 07:35:45 pm »
Taking a look at that Sonic Battle guide you made, it's not exactly very good. Shadow's specials, for one, have a fairly low hit accuracy unless you're very careful about it, and if the computers are invulnerable to one at any given time, you're left wide open for punishment, which would kill off quite a few point bonuses by itself. The rare power-ups for attack, speed, etc. are almost a necessity for such high scores, as well, which are not something obtained in a few hours.

If you're actually referring to a character combo card (another rare card, I might add), to the extent of my knowledge, while effective and almost ensuring 100%+ hit accuracy, they don't give a special attack bonus, making all Emerl scores you have impossible for you to have attained, in that case. For the record, that's how I got all my lesser Emerl scores before I figured out better combos. The bottom line, it seems highly unlikely, if not impossible, you're getting as high of scores as claimed with such a moveset for Emerl, bringing other character's scores to question in my mind. Also, your claims of being unable to provide proof certainly doesn't help your case.

As for misreading stats, you should be more careful and use common sense. One or two stats is one thing, but if it's a widespread problem, that's something else entirely.
