News and Updates / Re: New rules regarding emulators
« on: April 03, 2014, 10:44:35 pm »
I still stand by requiring videos for consoles as well as emulators would be the most thorough and complete way to implement this rule, but I'll admit it is a lot easier for people to use an input recording function of a PC emulator than it is to capture a video signal.

If anything, maybe the rule is at least a step in the right direction. Maybe at the very least it will get people comfortable with the idea of including some form of file alongside their submissions, and provide incentive to get a file attachment system in place for submissions.

Of the people posting against the rule in this thread, Who is now unable to compete because of this rule change?
Personally, I don't have much time to compete outside of the house these days and I could easily provide input files for the systems it applies for if I got back into competing, but I still feel it's necessary to play devil's advocate, since I can see it would've inconvenienced younger me. By extension, it might discourage newcomers.

we are still on the honor system
And that's what strikes me as the problem. If the rules aren't at least consistent across devices and there are already exceptions and excuses for those exceptions, then what is really being gained?

The reason you shouldn't require videos for consoles is because it requires lots of investments and time.

Quote from: TimpZ
It seems to me like everyone that are arguing against have the simplisitic argument of "less people will compete".

Well, what if the goal is not to have as many people compete as possible, but rather have as accurate leaderboards as possible? The Ocarina of time leaderboards of ZSR doesn't seem to have any problems with competition and all of those stats have to go through a verification process of some sort as far as I know.

What bothers me more than anything about these proposed rules is how logic seems to be warped for consoles, in comparison to emulators. This feels like an all-or-nothing rule, if it goes into effect in any caliber. Targeting only emulators is what strikes me as silly about the whole thing.

Even in the proposed defense of why the rule can work, things like the Ocarina of Time leaderboards, those people are recording their consoles, it's part of their competing process. If people are serious about increasing the accuracy and integrity of stats, it doesn't make any sense to treat consoles differently, just because "it's inconvenient".

People using emulators will be inconvenienced. I realize my PSP example is a little dated, but so am I. If you want a more recent, relevant example, most emulators available on Android and iOS devices lack recording abilities, at least last time I checked, and those are easily obtained by anyone.

It's worth noting that consoles aren't immune to age or imperfection, either, and can perform differently, especially if someone is dissecting things down to their individual frames. As my PS3 has gotten older, I've needed to occasionally defragment its hard drive to cut back on lag, and the same applies to PC's. Some old NES consoles I've come across have clearly seen some use, and everything was moving in slow motion, in relation to a "healthy" NES.

I think requiring video evidence of top stats is the most reasonable compromise if this rule needs to go into effect, but I do think that should also be extended to include consoles.

Back when I was a more active competitor, I did most of my competition on morning commutes. In addition to my Nintendo DS and Gameboy Advance, I would play some other games using emulators on my PSP. None of those emulators had any video recording capabilities. If such a rule existed at the time, I probably would've opted to just never compete at all, because it wouldn't have been practical for my time or resources.

It also seems odd to require proof all of the time for one form of playing the game, but not the other. In my personal opinion, all that does is actively encourage people to lie and say they weren't using an emulator to achieve their stats, especially if they legitimately don't have a good way of recording during their attempts on a regular basis, but still want to compete. In comparison, if emulators aren't a weird inconsistent taboo regarding rulings, if something doesn't seem right and people are playing fair, they can show what they did and specify what they used, and if there was some weird emulation flaw, it can be addressed in some way.

If "always submit video evidence" needs to become an official rule, so be it. But if it does, it should be all across the board, consoles and PC's included. However, there's no doubt in my mind that would cut the active competitors down significantly, since that sort of evidence requires special setups in many cases, and lots of less enthusiastic competitors will decide it isn't worth the hassle. That comes with the territory of absolute evidence.

Even if this topic was just an elaborate April Fool's prank or an attempt to get more people talking and bring more opinions out of the woodwork, that's just my two cents regarding such a rule. I didn't bother commenting on the other topic since I found it impossible to take what seemed to be one, maybe two people's whining about emulators seriously. Maybe there was more active discussion happening in the IRC, but if there was I wouldn't know, as I don't use IRC.

Gaming and Grazing / Re: Playstation 4 and WiiU Opinions
« on: November 25, 2013, 08:41:19 pm »
I've got my eye on the PS4, but like Groudon, there simply aren't any notable exclusive games I want for it that are currently available, or coming in the foresee-able future. If one has a half-decent PC complemented by a PS3 or 360, its existence feels a bit redundant at the moment.

The Wii U in my possession has seen quite a bit of use, though, between exclusive games like Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, New Super Luigi U, and the best multi-platform version of Need for Speed: Most Wanted. I'm still not sure if the tablet was a good investment for a mandatory accessory for the system, but the tablet is handy for off-screen play when someone else wants to use the TV (or if I want to watch a show while I play).

Casino Night Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Fun fact: Sega used to make slot machines and jukeboxes a few decades ago. Their inclusion of casino levels in games could very well be a shout-out to the company's origins.

It's been a while since I've seen the starter Pokemon of a generation and went, "...Yep, I'm okay with this!"

Hopefully the rest of the game turns out just as well.

I think the system looks intriguing, but will be holding out until a few must-have titles are on the system, like Pikmin 3. None of the day-one launch titles really caught my interest.

General Sonic / Dissecting Sonic

Someone over on DeviantArt has been doing an interesting series of video segments analyzing the story and character elements of the various Sonic games. Currently there are seven parts to it, but there's still more in the works. I found them to be both interesting and entertaining, so I thought I'd share.

Here's a link to the start of it:

Still working my way towards the Elite Four. Just reached Victory Road. I started using Lucario to power through most of the later areas, given my whole team's level started falling behind the curve due to my lack of grinding (have mainly fought just the trainers for the whole game, running away from wild encounters, with the exception of catching things). Seems like my team's level is starting to even out a bit, though, thanks to Experience Share.

I've also been playing on the 3DS, so I've been using the Dream Radar. Even if it's a little gimmicky, it's a pretty nice way to stock up on evolutionary stones and other rare/expensive items, as well as a good handful of legendaries and Pokemon with unique abilities.

Here's my current team:
Lucario Lvl 58
Flygon Lvl 51
Banette Lvl 51
Absol Lvl 50
Sawsbuck Lvl 50
Azumarill Lvl 53

Hiya Folks / It's Been a While, Folks!
« on: September 22, 2012, 01:19:41 pm »
Hey there, folks! Some of you may remember me, but I've been out of the picture for a while now, so I thought I'd introduce myself again.

Since the last time I've been active around here, a lot has changed in my life. Mainly, I finished my schooling and have a full-time programming job and such.

I used to be quite the Sonic fanatic, but at some point, my interest in the series as a whole just sort of...dropped off. After a prolonged absence of everything that is Sonic, however, I think I've started regaining that interest. In other words, I've been considering coming "out of retirement", so to speak, even if I might not be as active as I once was. With an HD version of Sonic Adventure 2 coming out early next month on PC and a few solid entries in the franchise I've yet to play, now seemed like as good a time as any to jump back into the scene. I'm working with some better hardware these days, too, so maybe I'll even be able to make some time attack videos or something, if I can get my skills back up to snuff.

Hopefully I'll see a few familiar faces 'round these parts, and a few new faces, too!

I'm not since I not so big on fan games. I like fan hacks like Sonic 1 Megamix.
It's not so much a fan game, as much as it's a glorified fan remake of the second Genesis Sonic with better graphics, different physics, and a few other things sprinkled in.

Okay so mine's updated. 5 awesome points if you can guess the game.
Judging from the bright green grass, those round roofs, and three-blade windmill, is it Klonoa?

I'd played it all the way through, and it was okay. It started out a little slow, but it got more battle options later on in the game, and it was a good two day fling. I'll probably never play through it a second time, however.

My main gripe was the lack of a button control scheme on the overworld map, as moving around felt very awkward from time to time because of its absence.

I also wished the different "What do you want to say?" options would've had more impact on game play, which would've given it more replay value; it would have also been nice if they'd had more appropriate sound effects, and if they'd done away with the "auto-regenerate after death if you don't kill everything this turn" enemies, given they were more of an annoyance than anything.

I had an epic movie dream last night. A shame I can't remember it :<

I also had another dream a while back, where myself and some others were living in a house, and for some reason it was infested with what would be best described as a cross between scorpions and crabs, with a purple hue, who would lunge at lightning-fast speed across the rooms and jam their pincers into my legs (but only I seemed to come across them). After killing quite a few in self-defense, I found out they were actually the pets of a very emotionally unstable sorceress with strong magical powers who was also living in this house, for some reason, and I was like, "Osh--!!!" While I hid the dead bodies of the creatures in a panicked frenzy and pondered what the sorceress would do to me if she found any of the dead ones, I woke up.

My educated guess: don't assign the commands to the F# keys, as there could be some interference going on between programs (one of my college teachers had a similar problem), or the screen cap software might not even properly support the F# keys for an unknown reason.

I find firefox to be very uncluttered...

I'm curious: Does anyone else use fullscreen when browsing?

I use it for wikipedia surfing, but not too much else, unless there's something that requires it...
I always use full-screen whenever browsing, personally.

I'll probably stick with Firefox for many years to come, plug-ins such as AdBlockPlus (used to disable any banner/image/url you name, either specifically or via generalized scripting) make it all worthwhile, lessening my clutter and bandwidth usage on the internet as a whole. The only things at the top of my screen are quick links to my regular sites (MAJOR improvement over my old method of keeping them in favorites, the space used is well worth it), the toolbar (I HATE browsers that put the toolbar into a button, as it ever-so-slightly obstructs quick access to options), and the main navigation bar, which I wouldn't call obstructive or cluttered by any stretch of the imagination.

Firefox also sees major improvements with a little program called Firetune, which just tweaks some settings in the browser for optimum performance.

Since I have too much time on my hands, here's a photoshot of my screen as it is right now:
