Help with a school thing - funny warning labels
« on: March 30, 2008, 01:23:28 pm »
OK, so on Tuesday my ethics class is going to have these discussions, and I was asked to do something about extensive warning labels on products.  Whilst Googling (<_<) for some amusing ones, I figured I could ask here.  So, post any really amusing warning labels that you've seen, including what they were on.  Real ones please.
To start, I'll post some of what I've found.  I got this list of ten from some random person's blog:

   1. On a can of bug spray: "Harmful to bees".
   2. On a life-saving device: "This is not a life-saving device".
   3. On a children's cough syrup: "Do not drive car or operate machinery".
   4. On a motorcycle mirror: "Objects in the mirror are actually behind you".
   5. On a box of sleeping pills: "May cause drowsiness".
   6. On a milk bottle: "After opening, keep up right".
   7. On a bag of peanuts: "May contain nuts".
   8. On a water heater: "If the building in which heater resides is on fire, do not enter the building".
   9. On a mattress: "Do not attempt to swallow".
  10. On a TV remote control: "Not dish washer safe".

On a Cheetos commercial: "Stunt nose, do not attempt."

Also you know the BASH quote. Get rid of those labels and let the world's problems take care of themselves. :P
<RPGnutter> Well I think your reasoning was dumb, so you get sassed
<RPGnutter> Thats how it works

The original DualShock playstation controller had "Do not attach to your head", I seem to remember.  Also the peanut one isn't that silly, as peanuts aren't strictly speaking nuts >_>

Yes, but the most common "nut" allergy is peanuts.  In that case, however, how would other nuts enter a bag of peanuts....?

The shampoo we used to use to clean our dogs, marketed as a pet shampoo, had the clear label "not tested on animals".

Also, though it's not exactly what you want, at a gas station I was at while my dad fixed a flat tire, they sold bearclaws. The sign above the bearclaws said "In stock or it's free".

So if it's out of stock, they're free! Good, i'd like a free nonexistent bearclaw please :D.

Also a bottle of iced tea I had the other day had, on the top of the cap "Do not drink". of course, lower, on the side of the bottle, it said "if the seal is broken".

That's all I have :(

Any product prepared on premises that deals in nuts (or peanuts >_>) will have the "May contain nuts" label on; some nut allergies are sufficiently severe as to provoke potentially fatal reactions from skin contact alone, so it's worth covering your bases.

I know this isn't exactly what you want.

on a movie theater sign: Now playing
                                        Harry potter
                                        Knocked up
                                        Nancy drew

Also, I have a book full of these(which I'm trying to find).

This is good:
On the back of a big rig truck: “Do not attempt to drive under, over, or through this truck. If you should choose to ignore this warning, good luck and have fun! Do not pass on right side.”

The movie one was amusing, too, though it doesn't fit.
I'll post the entire list I've found probably sometime tomorrow after the class.

On a swedish chainsaw: "Do not attempt to stop chain with hands or genitals."

(Note:  It was probably translated from Hebrew or Arabic or something, as many middle eastern cultures use "feet" as a euphemism for "genitals" (helps to know that when reading Scripture), so it was probably supposed to say "hands or feet" but got mistranslated.)

Not so stupid.  It's badly worded, but you shouldn't be able to boot a modern PC without a keyboard plugged in.

On McDonald's coffee cups: “Warning - Contents may be hot.”
I know the story behind this one too - McDonalds keep their coffee far hotter than necessary because it keeps longer that way, and someone sued them when they spilled some on themselves and got seriously burned (I think the person got third degree burns, but don't quote me on that <_<).  It's a legal indemnifier to allow them to keep serving such a dangerous product.
