Competition Central / Longest Lasting Records That Have Been Broken
« on: February 19, 2019, 09:19:19 pm »
A few months ago, I posted the Top 25 longest standing untied records. While I mentioned that looking for the longest standing untied records ever as a possible future task, I felt like uncovering a fresh set of stats; a list that would have the names of players from back in the day along with newer competitors. With that in mind, the longest lasting records that have been broken contains records that had stood the test of time, but were ultimately shown to not be maxed. Including the records that still stand today would likely have filled the chart with easily maxed ring stats. As an nice indication of activity, 16 of the top 25 streaks were broken this year which includes what was the second longest standing current untied record on the site, recently broken by Sm4sh.

« on: February 16, 2019, 08:41:10 pm »So help me god, if there’s a way for Drill to somehow be faster on Stage 29, I’m gonna flip a table, cuz I’m sick of Drill being the king of speedrunning in this game…The Drill strat in this video appears to be 3 seconds faster than the Hover + Cube strat you used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzQpQ9Cw1S8
Please go easy on me.
Stage 27 is faster with Void + Drill. I missed that. I also missed that this combo works in Stage 19 because skipping the quick time event apparently makes it possible to take out Metal Sonic without dealing with the extra badniks. This game is generating actual discussions now which is great. I am trying to figure out exactly how the community wants the charts set up which is coming with some difficulty. Even if the other stages are all faster without the rental avatar, having a rental (requiring it to be used somewhere in the stage) does change the run. If we want separate charts for rentals and no rentals, we need a solution for chart format. The charts will not go up until this is resolved, along with any other concerns that come up as changes after the charts are up will be difficult.
And, yes, Drill dominating speedrunning is a terrible waste of wispon variety which is why I have been going through stages without Drill to start out.

On the submissions page, there is text that reads "Guesses at, made up, or generally false times will be rewarded with bans". It is clear that the rule requiring video proof for record stats is understood given that stats just under the record were submitted to remove the record stat. You mentioned in your post that the ring stats you replaced the record stats with where put in place until video proof was available, which gives a strong impression that those stats (1 ring lower than record) were not actually obtained. If that was the case, they would be considered made up stats and were used to evade proof requirements. The correct course of action was submit the next best stat actually obtained or request an administrator to remove the stat.
Your submission behavior makes it difficult for other players to trust that your submissions are representative of actual achievements. This site had operated on the honor system for several years, but this presented the problem where stats could be made up and the ways to identify these stats as illegitimate without requiring proof in the first place was limited. To fix the issue, the requirement for video proof was added just for record stats. This could have applied to lower ranking stats but was limited just to first place to maintain easier access to submissions with the vulnerability that next best stats could be submitted without proof, regardless of their difficulty. Your times stats may not have come into question had the ring stats not given the appearance of made up stats, pushing the limits of the rules as they were written.
You have been uploading videos for several of your stats and planned to record videos for the first place stats you previously claimed. Was posting a video showing the best times and scores in the world map an unreasonable request? This surely would have cleared up most of the concerns of whether or not your stats were legitimate. It is important that players can trust that a competitors stats are valid and your actions highlight a vulnerability with the current rules. You could have resolved this problem with some cooperation but, instead, you opted out and changed all of your Sonic Unleashed 360 and DLC stats to minimal values. Additionally, you have removed the videos that previous stats had linked. Unless those stats were achieved with cheating, removing the videos, and your stats, was unnecessary. I recently addressed 17 players and their record stats that did not meet the proof requirements (you were on this list but removed the records before I took action) without issuing bans, or even a warning, received feedback from several of them, and have not had any further problems. Given that you chose to replace your stats and refused any sort of cooperation, your ability to submits stats will be removed and all of your stats will be suspended. When you decide you want to return, with a mindset that fosters healthy competition, we can discuss the terms of your return. There was no need for the site to lose a competitor like this.

« on: February 15, 2019, 05:55:55 pm »Maybe Rentals could have Freestyle category or same sort of stats like Sonic Generations "True Time Attack"
Does anyone else have an opinion on this idea? Rental avatars also change how competition works for ring and score attacks. Is there interest in competing in any of the categories separate from with rental avatars? Are they too similar to make it worth separating? One of these (Rentals or No Rentals) could be a separate category that may or may not count toward the rankings or they could be separate divisions, like different character choices for the same level.
Looking through the levels, I see very few opportunities for rentals to make a difference in time attack. The fastest times I could find for avatar stages did not make use of the rental in any stage.
Many of the stages have rings that are out of reach, depending on the wispon, and require a second wispon to collect additional rings/points. However, some stages do not really have anything extra to offer with a rental, such as Stage 17 VS. Infinite or some of the secret and extra stages.
I do not see enough reason to separate rental avatars for times stats. I see some reason to separate ring and score charts but only for some stages. For how much trouble it is to avoid separating charts that would overlap and the lack of support for this, I think leaving rentals and no rentals on the same charts is the better option.

Regarding rental avatars, most speedruns use them and they offer more to the strategy in competing for record stats. When I made the post for planed rules, the forum had been inactive and there was overall support for allowing them but also brought up was concern on how the rental avatar system picks avatars. This issue has not been brought up since so I assume it is not going to be a significant problem for competition. It is also safe to assume most competitors will have reasonable access to the online features so there is not much to support limiting the potential that could be achieved with rentals.
I do not mean to tease the idea of ring stats that exceed 999 but the score does go up by 100 each time a ring is collected. This could be very difficult to identify during scenes with a lot of action but the possibility is there. As it is, score attacks still benefit from collecting rings beyond the 999th ring. Too bad they did not do something like SA(DX) where the result screen shows ring totals above 999.

"A half hour RA... Plz don't allow this TSC if there's RA on the bosses."
Why? Why did I have to find a video with this description?
So there is interest in having these charts, no mention of the score attacks though. A concern I had with these was an assumption that the game did not have a time over and runs for these stats would take several hours or days to achieve. This was a big oversight on my part, there is a time over at one hour. This means some of the ring attacks will max out at 999 with a good amount of endurance while others will take too long to reach 999 rings. The score attacks will certainly fall short of 99999999 and can host actual competition. I do not see a reason to leave these charts out.
Plus, it would bother me knowing that CyberScore is hosting these charts if they were omitted here.

Here is some more information on the planned rules as some points have not been fully addressed and charts should be up soon.
Physical copies of the 1.00 version of the game are available, so banning that version is not reasonable and there are not enough differences to warrant separate boards at this time. The time-stop glitch will be prohibited.
The decision to prohibit the use of the rental avatar was based on the small amount of feedback from the community. I do not play with an internet connection so I have not seen how much of a problem getting the right avatar can be. This is an easy rule to change, should the community want rental avatars included in competition.
There are levels, mostly boss fights, with respawning rings and an unlimited timer. These levels will not have ring or score attacks unless there is support to include them. Stage 13 Casino Forest will have charts with use of the slot machines prohibited.

Here are the rules that are planned to go up for Sonic Forces charts:
* Use of Super Sonic in all Classic/Modern missions is banned.
* Difficulty setting must be set to Hard.
* Use of any feature that was removed in the newest version of the game is prohibited.
* Use of a rental avatar is prohibited.
* SOS missions are prohibited.
Rings Division
* Use of walking on the waterslide in Stage 14 Aqua Road to collect additional rings is prohibited.
* Rings must be attained in a single continuous run (without deaths).
Scores Division
* Submissions shall use the score displayed before the multiplier is applied.
* Use of walking on the waterslide in Stage 14 Aqua Road to destroy additional enemies or collect additional rings is prohibited.
* Scores must be attained in a single continuous run (without deaths).
The charts will be divided into "Times" "Rings" and "Score" for the main 30 stages with divisions "Avatar" "Classic Sonic" "Modern Sonic" and "Tag Team" except for Stage 30 VS. Death Egg Robot which uses all three characters. This would be its own division, perhaps "Triple Team". The times for Secret, Extra, and Shadow stages will go under "Extra" with ring and score stats put under "Rings" and "Scores" using the same divisions as the main 30 stages, except for Shadow which would be "Shadow".

Competition Central / Longest Standing Untied Records
« on: October 31, 2018, 11:08:10 pm »
The question that no one asked but is getting answered anyway: What are the longest standing untied records on The Sonic Center?
I was inspired to research this by the Goldeneye and Perfect Dark community over at https://www.the-elite.net/. There, they have two tables, one showing the top 10 longest lasting untied records ever and another showing the current untied records along with the option to show those tables as they were on an earlier date. While TSC does not have this feature, the data is available to find this manually. There was just this tiny difference where TSC has just a few more games to cover, 55 more or less, with many of them having a significant number of charts. Additionally, several games track time to a value more precise than a second and have competetive ring or score charts, making untied records common throughout the site. With that said, finding the longest lasting untied records ever is a lot of work and will have to wait for a later day, but I did compile a list of all 4453 current untied records on this spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e7qDY73t_0AVgF6J06apnISeh6d2diKSXM7Zu6zOZSU/edit?usp=sharing.
For convenience, here are the Top 25 current untied records:

Edit: Added Sonic The Hedgehog to the spreadsheet as that game was missing entirely, as it was on 2018 October 31. Total current untied records corrected from 4139 to 4453.

Competition Central / Re: Sonic Mania Competition Rules
« on: July 25, 2018, 08:22:17 pm »
Here are my thoughts on updating Sonic Mania charts if the latest version is going to be competitive with older versions of the game:
- Glitches and use of mechanics specific to previous versions should be banned. This would include sticking to slopes when jumping from a roll with Sonic or Knuckles.
- Boss fights that are exclusive to earlier versions that have an advantage for stat submissions should be banned.
- Any glitch to stop the timer should be banned. (Such as entering Lava Reef 1 after dying in the Oil Ocean to Lava Reef cutscene)
- Entering Lava Reef 1 from Oil Ocean 2 to collect more rings is similar to entering any Act 2 with the Act 1 boss ring monitors exposed. I think this should be allowed for that reason and that it better represents the maximum that could be achieved.
- Bonuses from finishing levels in Time Attack could be added up manually, which has an undesired affect of making scores look fabricated. Additionally, Cool Bonus could also require accounting for when manually determining bonuses. If scores using the old version of Time Attack are maintained, this would be useful in keeping it competitive between the different versions. Alternatively, scores achieved from Time Attack in earlier versions could be banned and scores achieved in Time Attack would be submitted as is. The correction to the Time Bonus in Time Attack on earlier versions is as follows:
< 0:30 = 50000
0:30 - <0:45 = 10000
0:45 - <1:00 = 5000
1:00 - <1:30 = 4000
1:30 - <2:00 = 3000
2:00 - <3:00 = 2000
3:00 - <4:00 = 1000
4:00 - <5:00 = 500
5:00 - <6:00 = 100
6:00 + = 0 (Unlike Sonic 3 & Knuckles)
A large number of submissions that used v1.03 would be affected so I am not sure it would be worth nuking the charts to that extent. It may be better to just ban v1.00 exclusive mechanics, if any at all. If any earlier version is still permitted, I would argue that either Stardust Speedway 2 boss be permitted for Rings and Scores stats or split the charts, but not limit it to Time Attack only. The Mania Mode stages have a greater ring total possible and limiting the stage to Time Attack would not reflect the highest scores attainable. The same goes for any other boss fights, should anything come up.
New charts to be added should include Mighty and Ray for Times, Rings, and Score. Encore Special Stages should also be added in Special charts. Time Attack also features the Encore stages with the option to pick one of the five characters for a solo run, just like the Mania stages. Unlike the Mania stages in Mania Mode, the character designation does not matter for Encore stages in Encore Mode due to changes in monitors that permit additional characters to join the party and swap into active play. While a single character could play in Time Attack for Times stats and Time Attack or Mania Mode for Rings and Scores stats, this is not possible with the Encore stages. Here are some ideas:
- Add Encore levels for Times for each character with Time Attack and add Encore (any character) for Rings and Scores with Encore Mode.
- Add Encore levels for Times, Rings, and Scores for each character with Time Attack and add Encore (any character) for Rings and Scores with Encore Mode.
- Add Encore levels for Times, Rings, and Scores for each character with Time Attack.
If Encore Mode is used for Rings or Scores, Angel Island should be added to the charts.

Nuking the ring charts is overkill. The argument is most submissions do not have proof that no rings were duplicated. However, this argument could also be applied to all records on the site that do not have a video, or any stat on the site for that matter, as there is no way to prove that no rules violation occurred for those submissions.
I think revising the rules to prohibit duplicating rings would be the best option. Record stats already require video proof and if it is of sufficient quality, spotting ring duplication should not be a problem. If we feel that people are too likely to duplicate rings without noticing it, then require video proof for all ring and score submissions. If any stats appear to be impossible without duplicating rings, then proof call those submissions.

There should be someone active on this site that can(will) answer this question. If not, then that is a problem which should be resolved. This is a relevant question about competition on the site and it would not be the first time a forum post or discussion ,such as this one, did not receive recognition from any of the site administrators.
As far as the ring attack goes, the run looks like it clearly does not break the competition rules, but that is just my opinion. Nice find.

For Times charts, I had also considered suggesting separate charts for "Time" (or Mania Mode) and "Time Attack" but figured there would not be enough interest to run through a level twice with the only difference being the presence of a boss fight. I am indifferent on whether or not to allow Mania Mode for Time charts but if it is allowed, it may be worth including Mirage Saloon 1 for Sonic and for Tails as the level has more to it than just the auto-scroller.
As for AI partners, I think allowing any Tails AI manipulation should be allowed. Determining whether Controller 2 input was used for Tails flight would not be any different from other movement from Tails. The flight can be controlled with Controller 1 and any direction or flight inputs would also affect Sonic's movement. Additionally, speedrunners have been competing in Sonic + Tails (no Controller 2 input) categories without any significant issues. I am in favor of not allowing other character combinations.
For Rings and Scores charts, I agree with allowing Mania Mode and Time Attack to prevent being stuck with inferior stats.

Beef / Re: Sonic R Times for all Characters
« on: January 02, 2018, 08:37:50 pm »
Where did you find that stats for Sonic R are valid only if Super Sonic is used? On the Sonic R videos page, there are several videos for stats, including records, that use other characters such as Dr. Robotnik and Amy. Those videos could create problems for expanding the charts as it demonstrates that splitting the charts by character and then assuming that everybody else used either Super Sonic or Sonic would not work.

Competition Central / Sonic Mania Competition Rules

Sonic Mania charts have been up for a few months without any game specific rules so I am starting this thread to address this.
Some things that come to mind are:
I am not familiar with how bonus stages or special stages could affect competition but figured they should be considered along with any input anyone else has on the subject.

- Should super forms be allowed?
- Should entering bonus stages or special stages be allowed?
- Points from a falling signpost should be limited to 100 points

Beef / Leftover Stats
« on: January 22, 2017, 12:03:26 pm »
When looking at the banned players on the Sitewide Rankings, it was unclear what determines whether their stats remain or are removed. In one instance, the Sonic 2 Rings chart has a record held by a banned player that exceeds the number of rings in the stage. The record is over 7 months old. I do not know if this problem exists on other charts but it would be better if such stats were removed as it makes it awkward to refer someone to the site for existing real time records and hurts the credibility of the site.
Also, I would like my award back please.
