Competition Central / Your Personal Best Stat on TSC
« on: November 26, 2014, 11:36:56 am »
Which stat is the one which you feel is the best one you've ever submitted to TSC, maybe it beat a long standing record? Maybe it is a long standing record? Maybe you got a perfect run nailed, or maybe you just spend countless hours on it?

For me my best is this stat:
http://www.soniccenter.org/members/sb737/sonic_generations/time_attack/seaside_hill/classic , http://youtu.be/Ayp8tnOwx3Y?list=PL9BED31938241A32C

Took me a very long time, and it's still top of the Xbox leaderboards to this day.

Competition Central / A Query on the Score Attack Rules
« on: November 15, 2014, 12:40:27 pm »
So the rules for the games which I'm referring to say that "Scores must be attained in a single continuous run (without deaths)." Now that rule indicates that if you die at all in the run, then your score is invalid. However in this stage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwuCGNQwZH0 it is impossible to not die, without going into a special stage first (it was a Sonic 3 bug for tail's only, which was fixed when locked onto Sonci and Knuckles). I was told that the rule meant you cannot carry your score over the death, so say I'd killed an enemy, got 100 points, then died and respawned at the checkpoint, I would have to subtract those 100 points from my score.

This is where I'm puzzled, and feel that with that logic this strat should be allowed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Noh1ZFJjPq0&list=UUrv6z1_Mk8p5b_2D87O1WEw
It's possible to sub 30 with that, which would give a time bonus of 80k points, which would smash the record. However iirc when this guy did get sub 30 and 80k bonus, his stat was removed (time is removed because you have to use time attack mode), but I feel the score should be allowed if the same logic is applied that was for the Ice Cap stat.

EDIT: A death is also used in Angle Island 2 as any character, to go back to act 1, an example video is here: http://youtu.be/KLHmxBi8jf0
In the video I start at the checkpoint, the death was prior to the video start.
This is different to the Ice Cap death in one way, Ice Caps is unavoidable. This one is avoidable in order to beat the stage.

If they make glitches what sonic is supposed to do in the game, then technically the game isn't broken ;)

But yeah on another note, it's like sonic 1&2 and cd all had extra something such as characters, or elemental shield, these features were already present in sonic 3&knuckles, if a new stage of two was made that'd be really cool, or perhaps merging act 1 and 2 into one big stage with a longer time limit, a time attack and boss attack would be neat, but anyhow the trilogy needs completing

I would say that dont allow using Super Sonic in the setup through act 1, I'd say ban TAS tools such as frame advance or using the RAM etc, however allow using as many savestates as you want in the act 1 setup, throughout the stage. I think that's what Timpz suggested in his third one, but I could have misinterpreted it.

Ok the official Twitter account for the Sonic Center now tweets competition updates like the TSC bot does, let me know if there are any problems with it, thanks.

Yeah it happened to me RAing Sandopolis 2 as well come to think of it. The reason it's easier with super forms, is a super form falls faster, making the ring be lost quicker, and start wrapping.

Yeah i was thinking that cryptic, people could link their account to their TSC account, then on twitter it would mention them, but atm TSC doesn't have that functionality.

Probably the best answer to the problem is this: There aren't lots of people who RA this game, whatever compromise we come with there's always gonna be an argument against it. So how about we just mutually agree not to bother with the level wrapping rings, instead of some official ruling, in all honesty its not even gonna be useul for sonic 3 stages as tails and knuckles, because having super forms enabled means you cant fly/glide/climb as them. Maybe in the future this is gonna become a problem, if a new person decides to use level wrapping rings, but for now we don't seem to be getting anywhere fast, so officially they can be allowed, but just don't use them, forget that vicklaw even brought it up, hell why did he tell us about it in the first place if he doesn't want them to be allowed? lol i have no idea...

So it tweets anything that this box shows:

so yes it does tweet only untied records, new champions and everything else in that box on the home page. TSC would have to do something on their end to sort out it spamming with new champions, but let's be honest new games aren't that often anyway.
Twibble is the site that i used to set this up, as i don't have the time/technical know how to code this myself, and he has a scarf cos it's the first image of sonic i found on my harddrive :P

Also tweets are limited to 300 characters, so if it's a long division I assume it wont show all the tweet, however i can use an url shortener on it if I want, so I will if that becomes an issue, but I think 300 characters is enough to handle it

https://mobile.twitter.com/TSC_Bot
This is something that was made a while ago, but due to submissions being down I couldn't properly test it. Seems to do the job correctly of announcing new records, videos, guides, and basically anything that you see at the bottom of the homepage. It doesn't tweet forum posts, I could add that if there's an RSS feed for it, probably a good idea if I set this up with the main Sonic Center twitter, as that's an already established account. I may need to tweak some stuff yet as I'm not sure if it handles multiple records submitted at once correctly.

Thoughts? And should this be implemented to the official twitter account?

<Thorn> if SB737 comes up with more than "it's stupid and random", he'll be considered too

Now I come to think of it, half the glitches used on TSC for stats are stupid and random, so let's just discard my stupid and random post

So essentially every setup in Sonic 3 & Knuckles is possible without savestates, what does that mean? Well nothing as ring wrapping is possible without savestates too. However, every person who does the setps at the moment (so pre-ring wrapping), starts with the same advantage, it's essentially start with a shield, item boxes from previous stage, and the slope glitch (or maybe the wheel glitch for CN2). That at least has a consistent cap as to what advantage you could get.

Using ring wrapping adds inconsistency, all of a sudden whoever is ther best TASer, will be able to carry the most rings to the next stage, and then you've lost the competitive edge to an extent. Whether you get the record, would probably have more dependence on who can wrap the most rings, not necessarily doing all the skill of the ring attack itself. At least games with random boxes have set amounts, and you know that there is a set max, with this, there isn't really a set max, or at least a very clear one.

I'd be for banning them, looks stupid and random

I gave SDM 2 points to the leadership, this time he only got one (smirk)

I literally cannot believe that it's a year since TSC was 10, gone so fast! Happy birthday TSC!! :)

« on: October 24, 2014, 10:54:19 am »
The freestyle charts weight to nothing site point wise, so it's where it is as it's an official stage, where supersonic is the only way to play it, and as it's there it has some weight towards the games competition.

Not too sure what to suggest, try this method maybe? http://youtu.be/OrxOSM1LG28 also try not to go to high when you're getting to the boss, or try to go as high as you can, as you can trigger the act 1 boss to start at different places on the top of the hill

I'm sure it's based on how you activate the slope glitch in act 1, do you do the falling through the floor method? If so try varying it a bit? But I'm not entirely sure how it works.

General Sonic / Re: 3DS virtual console and PAL
« on: October 07, 2014, 03:30:51 pm »
All my triple trouble stats were done on the same version as yours, as it's an official port it's ok, it's when you start using an unofficial emulator that allows recreation of features that aren't possible on the official console (for example playing in pal) that it becomes a problem, so unless someone else has something to add it's fine.

Wikkity! / How you came up with your username!
« on: October 05, 2014, 05:41:37 pm »
I think it would be both interesting and cool to see the stories behind people's username creation.

I'll start with mine - I was looking to make a YouTube account, to post speed runs of Generations (I'd just started speed running at the time). The Sonic Boom was inspired by the Sonic CD song "Sonic Boom" (at least I think that was the case...). The 737, contrary to rumour, does not come from my love of planes (which doesn't exist), but was actually the number that youtube suggested to me, as SonicBoom was obviously taken. SB737, my more recent amendment to it, is just an abbreviation of that, which I chose, as I felt "SonicBoom737" limited me to just Sonic content, in the online world.

Let's hear some other stories :)

Tbh SDM I've now performed and submitted to TSC 90% of the RAs of sonic 3 anyway, the only ones missing are the ones I haven't got round to/managed to do yet, uploading the RAs missing in video format would be useful to others tho.
