Competition Central / Re: The Official Guides/Videos Feedback Topic
« on: October 17, 2006, 10:22:18 pm »
I guess it's high time that my old videos were cleaned out, or at least the really disgraceful ones that remain:

Sonic 1
Spring Yard 3 - 1:33 (yellow)

Sonic 2
Mystic Cave 1 (S) - 0:45 (yellow)

Sonic & Knuckles
Flying Battery 1 (S) - 2:46 (yellow)
Lava Reef 1 (S) - 3:07 (yellow)
Sky Sanctuary (S) - 2:35 (yellow, really obsolete strategy)

And if people find LB1(K), MH1(S), or DE1(S) to be eyesores (due to framerate or otherwise) then they could be taken down too.

Descend and fly low to start off, so that you go under the boss's attacks.  Then when you get closer, ascend as needed to get to the weak spot.  When you're close enough, press and hold A or B to attack the weak spot.

I don't remember everything, but I'll try to help here.

Mad Matrix Hero: Use the Heal Cannon on the robots and use CC in the green tower to skip the long platform rides.

Iron Jungle Dark: When you use CC, make sure that your mission character is Eggman; that way CC will take you to the upper route, instead of to the lower route with the long rail. (Actually, it might also work with no mission character; I forgot where CC takes you in that case.)

Space Gadget Dark: I believe I got the blue light and used CC with Doom's Eye as my mission character (so I'd go down the Dark path).  Though I'm guessing that wouldn't account for all that time--this level in particular can take a lot of practice to get good at.

Lost Impact Hero: Not sure about this one, but I think I used CC to skip all or part of a gunlift ride.

25:74 for Egg Quarters; I'll go try R101 now.

EDIT: Hit 17 cars and finished in 2:34:20.

I was going slowly down the last stretch because I boosted into the 17th car.  My checkpoint times were 39:60 and 1:24:63, if I recall correctly.

Besides Sonic/Shadow games, I've mostly been playing Mario Kart DS.  I've mainly been competing in Time Trials; my times can be found here.  I also aim to get all 3-star ranks in GP and the Missions (about halfway done with GP, and about two-thirds done with the Missions).

I've played Astro Boy as well; I really enjoyed it.  Though I should play that again and finish Hard mode sometime...

PsyBorg, I can't say that I know how sonicam got his time (I tried BC Dark for a bit and got 4:59), but the level may not be as closed to innovation as you think.  It's one of the longest levels in the game, there are at least 3 extra GUN mechs, and there are plenty of black aliens to fill up your Hero gauge.

In fact, I just had an idea... I'll try it out later and see what I come up with.

Competition Central / Central City: Dark: What's w/ the super fast times
« on: January 07, 2006, 04:03:21 pm »
For CC Hero, I didn't use the GameFAQs guide to form a route; I was just saying that I could use the guide to easily explain my route to someone, since the guide numbers each bomb and gives a clear description of each bomb's location.

As for CC Dark, a few things that might help:

-You can skip the second weight by doing a big spindash-jump from the end of the fallen crane.  Then when you land, instead of triangle-jumping, do a smaller spindash-jump to cross the gap.  After you detonate the second bomb, don't use the missile; slide off the ledge, to the left, and touch the blue light.  Use Chaos Control and cancel it when you're near the third bomb.  (Chaos Control doesn't necessarily save time here, but it just makes this part easier.)

-At the third and fourth bombs, make sure you're not destroying more mechs than you need to.  Also, instead of using special weapons, pick up a rifle from a mech near the third bomb.

-Your Dark gauge should fill up near the fourth bomb.  After detonating the fourth bomb, go up the pole more quickly by jumping off and on the pole.  Run to the missile without slowing down, then grab it and let go of it as soon as possible.  If you were fast enough, you should still be invincible at this point, and you'll be able to run through the toxic liquid to the fifth bomb.

Leaderboard Disputes / Circus Park: Dark mission
« on: December 29, 2005, 04:00:21 pm »
I used the Omochao gun for 1:47.  Come to think of it, though, the Shadow Rifle is probably about as good for this level.  I suppose I'll briefly explain what I did:

-I miss the first gong by avoiding the center of the target.  I homing attack one of Eggman's robots twice, and grab its gun.  I then shoot up the robot on the ball so that I can proceed.
-Skip to the part with the first GUN robots... after bouncing up out of the tower, I shoot the first beetle (1), then I homing attack through the other beetles (2, 3, 4), and the ring container afterwards.  Then I get onto the ride.
-After the ride, I shoot the special weapons box in front of me, and I switch to the Omochao gun.  I go left and fire 3-4 times to make sure both the beetle (5) and the mech (6) are destroyed.
-Next, instead of using the rocket, I take the low road.  I fire at the mech (7) at a slight angle so that the bullet destroys it, but doesn't go for the beetles ahead.  I need to use homing attacks on the beetles (8, 9, 10) to proceed quickly.  Then, I run between the two Eggman robots and light dash to get to the slide.
-Skip to the second gong, which I again purposely miss by hitting the side of the target.  I fire at the beetle (11) and hope that the bullet bounces over to one of the mechs as well; it's usually the one on the right for me (12).  I then shoot the other mech (13) while running to one of the springs ahead.
-After the next stretch, I take the low road, where the mechs are.  I shoot the next mech (14) while running to the opening in the floor, then I jump down and avoid the pole.  After landing, I shoot the mech (15) and proceed.
-Skip to the tightrope.  As I slide off of the tightrope, I fire madly at the two beetles, since I have infinite ammo at this point (16, 17).  I hope that I get them quickly so I can land right onto the spring.  Then I grab the rocket and let go of it as soon as possible.  I drop down and shoot the mech there (18), then I proceed to the last two mechs...
-When I get to the part with all the crates, I just fire madly to take out the last 2 mechs quickly (19, 20).

Hope that helps somewhat.  If further explanation is needed, let me know.

Beef / The Sonic Center Things to do list!!!

The problem with MBM Scenario Mode times is that the strategy would not only be redundant between difficulties, as was mentioned, but it'd also be somewhat redundant between stages.  Between stages, the only differences are the speed of the beans and the enemy's ability to drop refugee beans on your side while you're setting up combos (and this can be largely overcome with some luck).

And, hate to say it, but I have my doubts about Exercise mode too.  I find it easy to survive at the highest speed (Level 13 and on), and I think the score chart might become more of a competition of how long you can be bothered to play.  However, if no one else thinks this way, then I won't object to adding a ranking for this.

I think score rankings for Scenario mode would be good.  It shouldn't be very luck-dependent because you're going through 13 stages.  Maybe divisions for each difficulty can be justified here, too, because when the beans are faster and the opponents are better, it's tougher to consistently set up good combos, get nice time bonuses, and even survive all the way through.  (I never did manage to get through Hardest without dying.)

You mean my 2:19 on Act 1?  Yeah, it's definitely improvable.  In fact, I know someone who got 2:17, not long after I got 2:19.  He's the one who came up with the strategy for the eye boss. (I was competing with him and a couple of others, before TSC existed.)

DAY 4 - TOURNAMENT REPORT

EVENT 6: DEATH EGG

Hmm, I really don't feel like doing a formal Death Egg writeup now.  I guess you can just see the videos (recorded by Zizou):

TSC's run
Act 1 - 3:58
Act 2 - 4:47
TOTAL - 8:45
I struggled with the Act 1 boss, but everything else went all right.  Act 2 went faster than I expected, actually.

SCD's run
Act 1 - 4:44
Act 2 - 7:26
TOTAL - 12:10
I guess he struggled with the Act 1 boss too, and the run just generally wasn't as polished as mine (though mine wasn't that polished to begin with).

TSF's player died in Act 1.  One TSS member volunteered to play but had serious connection problems, so he couldn't finish a run.  One SOAH member showed up hours after the event started, and he couldn't play because he had already played in 2 other events.

So TSC got gold for this event.

DAY 2 - TOURNAMENT REPORT

This writeup (for Mystic Cave) is late, but I didn't have time to do it while preparing for Death Egg and everything.  Unfortunately, I didn't record these matches, as I couldn't seem to get Camtasia recording and Gens running simultaneously.  However, I saved a few notes after each match, so I'll try doing a writeup based on that and some other random stuff from my memory.

EVENT 3: MYSTIC CAVE

I practiced this for about three hours the day before the event, but I still wasn't sure what to expect.  I had zero experience with NetPlay, and nearly zero experience with Sonic 2 multiplayer.  SM gave me some general tips about multiplayer, though, so that helped give me some idea of the strategy.

MATCH 1 - VS. SpinDashMaster of SCD

I'm pretty nervous as I enter the match, as it's my first multiplayer NetPlay game ever, and it seems like people are expecting the SCD player to dominate.

Act 1 starts.  I end up having to take the lower route at the start, and I struggle a little trying to grab the vine over the spike pit.  For some time after that things go fine, though my opponent manages to stay ahead of me.

I see him at the large vertical room near the end, but he manages to proceed out of it before I do.  I follow him, seeing if I could still win the Time category.  He finishes first, and I finish about a couple of seconds later.

ACT 1 RESULTS
SCD WINS 3-2

Better than I expected, really; right afterwards I figured that finishing right after him was a bad move.  I wonder if I could've caught up in other categories if I had went back to collect stuff.  Oh well, on to Act 2...

We seem to have the same strategy to start off: spin-dash and then hit the ceiling and grab the vine.  Except that we both miss the vine.  Then I grab it, and he gets ahead a bit.

This Act doesn't go too well for me.  I take my usual route and get hit a few times along the way.  I often find myself following my opponent, which isn't good since he takes the item boxes, enemies, and rings in the path.  Again, he finishes first.  I then think about going back to collect stuff, but before I realize it I've dropped down to the point of no return.  I stand still for a second in disbelief, then I just go and finish.

ACT 2 RESULTS
SCD WINS 3-1
SCD WINS THE ZONE

And I only won in the score category.  I believe I finished with 1 ring and he finished with 3, which was a little annoying.  But then again, a tie for Act 2 wouldn't have done anything, as I'd already lost Act 1.

MATCH 2 - VS. Truesonic of TSF

So now I have to win all of my other matches to have a reasonable chance at gold.  I figure that I'll have an easier time with my other opponents, though.

The match starts, and I spin-dash and end up at the bottom path again.  I try to spin-dash back up using the slope, but that doesn't seem to be possible.  I see my opponent fall to the low road as well.  We both proceed and come to the spike pit with the vine over it.  We both make a grab for the vine, and we both miss.  Then we both jump back out and try again.  And again.  Eventually one of us grabs the vine.  He proceeds, and I die in the spike pit because I forget that you can't jump up through the bridge.

At least this time I'm able to take the upper route at the start.  I go through the level as I usually do, and I see my opponent again at the vertical room near the end.  We both struggle a bit to grab the vine.  Finally I grab it and proceed first.  I go just past the next vine for an item box and an enemy.  My opponent seems to follow me, and he jumps right past me, as I go back to that vine and proceed toward the finish.  I decide not to grab the last two item boxes to make sure I win the time category, as he's not far behind.  He grabs them and finishes after me.

ACT 1 RESULTS
TIED 2-2

In Act 2, I realize before long that my opponent is having some trouble with the level.  So I go on my usual route, taking care to avoid getting hit because I have the time.  I finish first, fairly confident about my stats.  He still has a long way to go because he keeps dying.  I just watch him play for the remaining minute.  When he gets Time Over, he hits an Eggman box at the same time... talk about insult to injury.

ACT 2 RESULTS
TSC WINS 5-0
TSC WINS THE ZONE

MATCH 3 - VS. TSS

I forgot who my opponent was, but it was probably the same one who played in the Emerald Hill event.

Anyway, in Act 1 I go through my normal route and it's going great - I don't get slowed down much at all.  I seem to keep getting invincibility and 10-ring boxes, too.  If I ever get any Eggman boxes, I get them when I'm invincible.  I get to the last vine with about 90 rings, and I'm feeling very good.  I jump in between the last 2 moving plant traps, when my opponent loses a life, and the screen fades out.

ACT 1 RESULTS
TSS GETS GAME OVER
TSC WINS THE ZONE

They actually got a Game Over in Act 1!  I was guaranteed to win either way, too, since I had so many rings and was headed for the finish.

MATCH 4 - VS. HedgehogSamurai of SOAH

At this point, it seems that SCD has won all 3 of its matches so far and is guaranteed the gold medal (unless they lose to TSF somehow).  However, whoever wins this match gets silver, and whoever loses gets bronze... so the pressure's on.

Act 1.  This time the level goes fairly smoothly for me, and I figure I might win.  However, I get killed by the last moving plant trap before the end!  I believe I have to go back to the start here.  My opponent finishes, and I have one minute to collect stuff.  I try to take some different routes to find more rings, since I've already taken most of the rings in my usual path.  In the meantime, my opponent jumps and spin-dashes impatiently.  I finally get Time Over and see the results:

ACT 1 RESULTS
TIED 2-2

Guess what I tied my opponent in: Total Ring.  Looks like I needed every second to get enough rings to prevent a loss.

Act 2 starts out fine, and then I fall into the inescapable spike pit, forcing me to avoid the lost rings and wait for the kill.  Just then, my opponent finishes the level.  I respawn at a lamppost, and, again, I'm left to collect stuff for a minute.  I'm more careful than usual to avoid getting hit, as any category can count here.  The level finishes with a Time Over for me.

ACT 2 RESULTS
TSC WINS 1-4
TSC WINS THE ZONE

It looks like my opponent didn't really try to win other categories besides Time, so I won the match.

And TSC finishes the event with 10 points.  After the match, SCD and TSF still have yet to play each other, and if SCD lost, then I could try playing a tiebreaker for the gold... but there's practically no way that would happen.

Indeed, SCD appeared to beat TSF easily, so TSC takes silver.

Well, that report was longer than expected, considering that I didn't even record the event.  Anyway, I guess I'll soon do a Death Egg writeup as well.

Competition Central / Final Chase = Pwned

Final Chase is one of the last levels I'd feel like perfecting.  2:35 is awesome beyond my imagination... I think I had trouble breaking 3 minutes.

Surely you don't mean it's literally 1-2 seconds off absolute perfection, though?  I think it's safe to say that there isn't a single SA2 record that's over 45 seconds and less than a second away from being perfect.  I'd especially doubt it in a level like this.

Rayku:  I'm not sure if it would make the difference, but did you know that you can pass under one of RH's rotating cylinders by just holding down B as you approach it (as opposed to doing a somersault)?  That way you also come out on the other side ready to spindash.

mike89:  MG1 will be hard to duplicate for a better video capture, since I thought the run was flawless when I got it, but I'll try my best when I play again.  I'm pretty sure I can improve DE1, though, as there were at least three mistakes in my run, and of course there was the well-handled second boss phase.  Plus, I know someone else with a 2:17 (I got the strat for the first boss phase from him).

If we're going to make this look professional and like a continuous run, we should make sure that the quality of each actual video (framerate, resolution, etc.) is consistently good.  Also, we should make sure to include the full beginning and end of each level - each individual video should start when/before the screen is completely black, and end after the screen fades out after the score is calculated.  Then parts could be cut if necessary, and the vids could be strung into a continuous run.  So basically, I don't think any of my current vids would work.  I'll be willing to help put this together when I get back to Sonic in a month or two, though.

So for Marble 3, at the part before the shortcut in the wall, you don't hit the 3 spikes (unlike in my 1:23 video)?  I rarely jump over the spikes without touching them, so getting hit was part of my plan.  I think I can see how you got 1:20.

In my Sonic Mushroom Hill 1 vid (in S&K, not S3&K), one big ring is directly in my path at about 0:25.  In fact, when I was playing that level, I had to TRY to avoid the big ring...it was the most annoying obstacle when I was trying to get a fast time (because I didn't want the special stage in the middle of my taped run).
