It took me about 3+ years to beat OoT, and got stuck in like, five areas. All of them resorted in me stopping to play the game because of the frustration. :(  And that annoying Water Temple!

And I really enjoyed ALttP. Best Zelda game for me.

Gamespot Hands-On preview: link

Sounds good so far. Nothing new here, really.

Quote
As with any game bearing the BioWare name, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood places a heavy focus on the story. What we know from the outset is that Knuckles has gone missing, so it's up to Sonic and team to act as the rescue patrol. Digging a little deeper, we find out from Tails that Knuckles has most likely been kidnapped by a shadowy group known as the Marauders. In fact, it's Tails who bears the burden of Knuckles' disappearance; Tails set up a trap so Knuckles could put a stop to the Marauders stealing all the world's Chaos Emeralds. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out, and now Tails has joined your team to help find the spike-fisted echidna.
Quote
Another key sign that this is a BioWare game is the freedom of choice you're given in dialogue sequences. Playing the part of Sonic, you can choose from a multitude of responses to any one question or statement. These options range from helpful to downright condescending. Sonic, it seems, has been given a bristly personality to match his hedgehog appearance. Whether it's making fun of a grown man for his fear of robots or rubbing salt in Tails' wounds for letting Knuckles go missing, Sonic has the potential to be a real jerk toward others.

lol
I guess the Story is one of the main features about the game. Letting you respond to anybody and be as constructive, thoughtful, or snarky as you please. :D

Just off the top of my head

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Ristar
Sonic3&K
Megaman X1
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario World
Sonic 1
Megaman Zero
Super Mario Kart
Animaniacs (Genesis)
Majora's Mask & OoT  I always counted them as one game :(
Tiny Toon Adventures (Genesis)
Arkanoids
Smash Bros. series
Bomberman series
Bust-a-Move/Puzzle Bobble
Pokemans

I believe that's in order, give or take a few. I have yet to play more games that people keep on raving about, as well as not having any of the next-gen consoles.

40
It was either that or make a new thread, and I didn't fell like making one when I have a perfectly good 8+ page discussion topic about it. >.>

I wanted to do a SS speedrun :(. I wouldnt like to try to learn the paths for the Special Rings but it might be fun O.o . Also glad to know your going to start playing adv2.

I've memorized the pathways for the SP rings in Advance 2. Should I do it? :o

43
Long post ahead afgak...

I guess some voting would help out here on what we should do. I think finding out what we want is a good place to start.

-Should we collect all emeralds?
-Which games would you like to be feature in the playthough and which are "excessive baggage"?
-What about games with the same title but are featured in different platforms (Sonic 1 Genesis/Game Gear versions)?
-What about the final story/boss/levels?
-Any game should be played as Sonic/SS unless a variation of playstyle and layouts are available.
-If another character can do a certain stage faster than Sonic, should they be switched for the time being?
-What about Tails? Should a second player be controlled? It'll help in Hydrocity 1 in the beginning, bosses, and a few other areas.

So in order of mainstream games:

Classic-
Sonic 1, Sonic CD, (SegaSonic Arcade?), Sonic 2 (with Tails?) S3&K, (Knuckles' Chaotix?) Sonic 3dBlast, (Sonic the Fighters?), and then Sonic R(?)

-Sonic CD can be a bit problematic whether we should go to the past and future stages, US vs EU/JP soundtrack, and Time Stones collection.
-For Sonic 3, two playthroughs; one for Sonic's story, and then another for Knuckles'.
-Sonic R=should we do this? If so what about unlocking characters and difficulty settings?

Modern-
(Sonic Pocket Adventure?), Sonic Adventue (DX?), (Sonic Shuffle?), Sonic Adventue 2 (Battle?), Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Rush, Sonic Battle, Sonic Advance 3, (Sonic Riders?).

-Should we playthrough all the other three teams in Sonic Heroes?
-Playing through Rush from start to finish with both characters can be finished quickly; whether we should get to the final boss or not.
-For Shadow, I think the best tactic would be to do each stage once. Getting a file that has already completed the final boss will take out repetition of levels. We could just take different routes until each stage is eventually played, then move onto the final story. The other tactic would be to do "everything" and start from a non-save. This can take quite a few hours to do, so I really would suggest to avoid it. Most of the level objectives are monotonous work and time consuming anyway; it'll get boring quickly.
-For Advance 2, I guess we could do the same thing and just do a play though from start to finish on an all character save file and play as Sonic and get all emeralds, then move on to True Area 53. Another idea would be to show the storylines of unlocking the characters, stop recoding and do Tails, Knuckles, and Cream fully while recording another game; and then move onto True Area 53.
-Sonic Advance 3 has different team work aspects and I think that character switching should be done every so often when feasible.

Current-
Sonic '06 D:, (Rivals?), Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic Riders 2: Shooting Star Story, (Rivals 2?), Unleashed, (Dark Brotherhood?), (Black Night?) D:

I'm not up to speed with most of these games. So I wouldn't know what not to do. I guess just play through Story mode and finish should be the easiest feat.

I've omitted all of the Game Gear and puzzle games and gave a question mark to those weather we should do or not as optional. We also have crossovers (Christmas NiGHTS, Superstar Tennis and Mario-Olympics) which should be put on a league of their own. I say that all of those listed up first up here should be done first. If time persists, we can go back to do the others. Doing the final bosses and collecting the emeralds aren't that hard, to do.

Edit: Cleared up a few things and forgot a few games.

44
I have a Gameboy Player for the Gamecube. I also bought the Gamecube-Gameboy connection thingy that lets you use the Gamboy Advance/SP as a controller. I also have 4 Sonic game gear games (Chaos, Drift 2, Sonic 2, and Mean Bean Machine, which has an Extra Mode not present in the Genesis version). But my game gear is dead now, so unless somebody else brings thiers, i.e., buys me one I guess we wouldn't bring this for discussion at this point. The GG games are available in Sonic Adventure DX/Gems Collection, so camera issues will not be present; so it's up for discussion which way we want to record them.

If I will be able to make this (depending on where this will be located) I'll gladly play Sonic Battle for sure (deletion of story mode may be problematic for Emerl cards), maybe a few levels of the Advance games, and Mean Bean Machine GG.

The T- I"m pretty sure that P.P.A. would do Pinball Party, so don't count it out just yet.

You really should've known that from the previous release.

I never even got past level five from the previous release. :D

I did play the 3.5 ver. that was leaked right before it was taken out when I decided to lurk through the forum. Passed it with all emeralds and characters too. :o Dark Fortress is the only one that stands out as different. I somewhat appreciate those layouts more, even though it still looks and acts like Marble Zone still. I guess it did change again for the better with a speedy idea in mind.

Also, which emulator supports savestates for Sega CD? I've been using Kega_Fusion (don't know which version, it's not the most recent one I know that). The game doesn't save and I passed it with Tails and all emeralds so I can't access Extra Mode through regular means. I don't have a Sega CD either so I can't test it on hardware.

Tweaker said that Debug(haven't confirmed this) and Level Select still work and the codes are maintained from Sonic 1; you can access Act 4 though there. Although, I wouldn't recommend it with the last three levels because they are incomplete. I'd suggest debug with Misty Maze as it's an entirely new level whereas Starry Night and Metallic Base send you to an odd location from a previous level.

Also, by pressing button C when you select your game you will be sent over to Time Attack mode. I don't know if ghosts work, though as none seem to appear at all. There is also an Extra Mode available, but i'm not sure how to access that.

Holding button Right when the game starts will show you your BRAM data

More stuff taken form Retro's forum.

Tweaker:
First byte is zone/act—first nybble is zone, second is act. I forget what the second byte does... 3rd one is number of lives, I forget the 4th one, and the last byte is number of emeralds. Then the long after that is score.

Stuff intended for Megamix:

Quote
Tweaker:
An alternative soundtrack mode (using CDDA), brand new zones, fully revamped art for each zone, fully revamped layouts, methods of unlocking characters, a bonus stage and two new special stage engines, an epic final boss, at least 3 more original zone bosses, a new character select and save management screen, a time attack screen, a boss attack, ghosts for each level, a potential two player mode...

Hell, there was tons of shit I wanted us to add. And we had the skill to pull if all off, too! That's one of the reasons this whole situation is so unfortunate. :\

Tweaker:
Yeah, he was. Have you ever played Kirby & The Amazing Mirror? If so, imagine Knuckles using the Fighter copy ability and you have a general idea of how I wanted him to play. =P

Knuckles' Super ability was meant to be a homing glide, which is like the homing attack, but... you know, a glide.

General Sonic / Re: Sonic Rush Adventure: Is it as good as Sonic Rush?

I found SRA to be the best recent Sonic game; and one of my favorites ever. Marine was annoying, but fun to watch at others' expense. Her relentless annoyance of the other characters was hilarious. :D

Sure, the Rush series doesn't play like the old 2D games, but I doubt that they were supposed to. The whole idea was to get to the finish with speed in mind and using the advantage of the boost and tricks. It's certainly not just "hold right to win" as most people say, as you're actually keeping things in check.

Adventure shook things up a bit with it's mostly referred to "unnecessary replayability gimmicks" but I wouldn't blame them as progression through the game can get tiring. I still think that the waterbike and submarine were fun to play, though.

also I didn't very much like the music in Rush either.  there were like 3 tracks that were good, but the rest was getting on my nerves.

Oh, Advance 2's sucked too? I never got a chance to try them so I wouldn't know.
It's like a watered down version of Sonic CD, only you walk around aimlessly collecting rings. And when you get the total amount (which is always 300) you stay there until the timer gives out; usually about 75% of it still left to go. :(

You know, instead of slashing by waggling the remote, couldn't he just... roll into enemies?

Because upon the many years he's been hitting into enemies in ball form, it eventually lead to a physical problem. It lead him to have a bump on his head and hasen't recovered from it. This makes things like the spindash appearing less often and is the reason why he rarely uses it in the newer games. He has been relying on Homing attack recently as it complicates him less, but it too has received a side effect recently; as seen in Sonic '06 where he has to stop before each bounce.

But the greatest implication this had on Sonic is that it has caused him to not think straight. You have all seen how thoroughly different his behavior has become. Instead of a being one born to triumph over Dr. Eggman's plans because of his mischievous mechanical work, he now claims that he is a "Superhero." This mentality, unfortunately, has made him more fascinated with the human species and now would rather live in more rural environments to further accommodate their needs; as well as giving off catch phrases and lower level form of speech.

This problication has possibly happened to Amy as well, but no further analysis has confirmed otherwise.

Sonic games i've beaten with special stages (without cheating/save states):

Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic CD
Sonic Chaos
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
S3&K
Sonic Drift 2 (all three cups)
Sonic R (doesn't have SS, but too lazy to del)
Sonic Advance 2
Sonic Heroes
Sonic Advance 3
Sonic Rush
Sonic Rush Adventure

I really don't see how anybody can find them difficult. I've even done it with Sonic and Tails in Sonic 2 and found that easy as well. >.> Sonic Advance 1's suck though. That's the only one I actually find mind numbing and have yet to figure out how to complete them. Sonic 3D Genesis. everybody hates by default.

My favorite SS is possibly Sonic 1. The whole tilt-the-ball game ordeal was quite nice, but can also get annoying. The half pipe idea i really hate because it's been done like ten thousand times. Sonic Rush's was notably the best one, and have yet to play 3D Saturn. It does look nice, though.

Nintendo Power article screens and info are up.

http://www.blueblur.org/2008/07/21/sonic-and-the-black-knight-nintendo-power-details/

Nintendo Power Gives a First Look For Sonic and the Black Knight

I’ve received my issue of the Issue #232 September 2008 Nintendo Power with Sonic and the Black Knight as the cover story. Some of the key points that I think should be worth mentioning with direct NP text put in quotes:

-Developed by the same people as Sonic and the Secret Rings
-”This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyranical Black Knight.”
-Uses a similar storybook device as Secret Rings
-”As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts.”
-More advanced swordplay consists of the ability to thrust, parry, and even pull off a buzz-saw maneuver midjump.
-”During out demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his decent, sparks flying impressivly as steel cut through brick”
-”Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down”
-Sonic is controlled with the Control Stick.
-”Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur.”
-”his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor”
-If you help civilian townfolk in need of assistance, you’ll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit.
-”At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly.
-You can purchase items from residents. “Sonic can aquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit.”
-About 200 items in all, with some being able to be combined with others to make new ones.
-You have the option to go online and trade items with friends.
-Rings come in burlap sacks instead of monitors.
-Sonic uses magic elementals to help him do various things, such as a bounce pad or a speed boost. They look like chao heads. The red ones give him a jump and the blue give Sonic a speed boost.
-Sonic can cross large gaps by firing a ballista and grinding the rope to the other side.
-”On the audio side, veteran composer Jen Senoue is taking a smiliar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavor.”
-”Each stage has multiple branching paths and searching for townsfolk and treasure chests provides an element of exploration that recalls Sonic’s early Genesis days.”
-”the camera will occasionally pan to a side-scrolling perspective for a quick dose of classic 2-D action”
-SBK Bringing back the skill system from Secret Rings, but they’re trying not to have the skill system interfere with the game’s tempo this time around.
-The mission structure also returns but the developers hope to make it less arduous.
-”And there will be no dinosaur eggs!”
-”Just as they subbed in for such characters as Ali Baba and Aladdin in Sonic and the Secret Rings, a number of familiar faces will assume Arthurian personas in SBK.”
-”This time, however, some of Sonic’s friends will be playable. Each hero will boast unique abilities, and though the team isn’t ready to divulge the full cast just yet, we do know the identities of two playable comrades: Knuckles, who brandishes two swords at once, and Shadow.”
Playing as these other characters is entirely optional. You will be able to play through game as Sonic, or switch to the other characters if you choose.
-”When people see that Sonic is wielding a sword, they’ll probably have certain expectations of the multiplayer mode. And all I can say is that we’re thinking along those same lines.”
-While the old guages from Secret Rings are gone, a new special guage will “bestow him with similarly impressive powers. The meter fills gradually whenever Sonic vanquishes an enemy or snags a purple elemental, and when it reaches a certain point you can unleash a powerful combination attack capable of tearing through multiple foes in quick succession. You simply press the B button to lock onto the nearest enemy, flick the remote to strike him down, then press B again to move onto the next unfortunate soul. If you chain together enough smitings before the guage is depleted, Sonic will receive a speed burst at the end of the string.”
-”the team behind Sonic and the Black Knight is keenly aware of the franchise’s past missteps, and their enthusiasm for doing right by the series is infections”
Those are some key things I pulled out. If you want more, I suggest you pick up the September 2008 issue. It’s number 232 of Nintendo Power.
