So I was playing (and failing) through S3&K, and this happens at the AIZ boss. Feel free to fast forward through the first two minutes or so.

General Sonic / Re: Is the 360 demo just like the rest of the game? :(

The Wii's stages are more open, but they don't really utilize the space they give you. This makes the stages feel empty and pretty bland. It reminds me of a Sonic themed traditional racer: you have a lot of area to run around in, but the levels don't have enough obstacles in your way to make it interesting and fun.

This is just impressions from videos, though. And there are a few stages which use the gimmicks creatively, like Holoska and Chun-Nan.

Let me just explain this whole mess.

This is an attempt by SJ and I to play through MM3 with an odd condition: every time we get hit, we must package up an FCEU savestate and send it to the other person.

We're currently up to Needle Man. It's an amusing diversion, because we get to see all the mistakes that the other player makes.

Twin Galaxies was a good, reliable organization for video games back when it was still in the arcades: there, their methods made sense, as they could affirm the reliability of whatever arcade they came across as it was.

As gaming branched out into consoles and the industry became even more decentralized, it's really almost criminal to see Twin Galaxies not taking advantage of new media: the old system doesn't work over a worldwide level, and the Internet is staring them in the face with a solution.

But anyway, that's not exactly what I'm talking about. I'm more directed at what Alondite said,

Quote
funny...because allowing glitches really makes it hard to see who is "the best" considering that it generally involves less skill than running through the level at record pace.

It's not so much that it takes less skill so much as it takes less effort to get a good time. Assuming everyone used this glitch (and it didn't totally wreck competition to bits) the rankings would be more or less the same as they are now, although with smaller variation between the times: the issue is that relatively few members of TSC are still competing, and the few who do are thus able to scour up new glitches and get better times than those who hadn't bothered to compete.

Glitches put competition on a different level, particularly some of the bigger skips (look at how easy it is to stratify SO1T into "glitch" and "non-glitch") and often encourage people to play through levels again, even if a large portion is cut out. There's no denying that it does pep up TSC.

Wikkity! / I'm leaving.

I can't be here.

School has taken its gradual toll on my free time, and a gradual feeling of nervousness has sort of followed this quarter. It's flying by, and all the work is just not getting done. It scares me. My parents routinely get angry at me, with the sort of exapseration that suggests that something's going to happen, and soon. They'd probably send me to some other school, yet another nail in the coffin of my supposed self-sufficiency. I failed math and health last quarter: if either of those happen again this quarter, I am simply dead. They'll cart me off with no question, taking me out of someplace I actually liked and transferring me to someplace which will only exasperate me.

Special education has been around me forever, often in far more of a role than I like. To actually get rid of this, I have to leave here, concentrate on my studies. It'll help me actually appreciate myself.

Don't think it's just you: I plan on going through my hard drive when I get home, transferring stuff to other places. It's necessary.

Other stuff exists, too. Being here whatsoever has botched my sleeping schedule , often leaving me up in the wee hours of the morning, subject to even more exasperation.  This I can fix. There are so many things that I'm dissatisfied with about my life, and just being an escapist isn't going to help with any of them.

I love this place: it's one of the few places I actually enjoy on the Internet. But damnit, I'm just going to have to give it up for the time being.

As usual (as much as I hate to admit it), Doug put more of my ideas into words.

To Jawzun: Why don't you like RA/SA?  I'm curious. You hold a fair amount of the records in said areas...

To RPG: Before the new trick was found it took be about 30 runs to get max rings on SB1, and the new trick didn't seem that hard for me to pull off, personally, so I could see netting them all if fewer than 100 runs, even on a bad day...

compare that to the 634 runs it took me to get :24 GH1 (and the previous 1k+ to get :25) or the 10k+ runs to get :18 EH1S, or the omgwtfbbq runs to get my 24'45 NGH1S in SAdva.

Now as I've said, I am fairly ignorant concerning SA rings/scores, but if it's just because people aren't good at them, or are too lazy to do them, then it's a BS reason to weight the charts differently.  S3DB, as noted above, requires you to max rings before really bothering to compete, lest you start out with a ton of points before you even really start trying to beat those awesome times.

)I will, at some point soon, run RAs of Sonic Adventure, once I finish getting over the whole "damn I hate 3D games" thing, and once I find a way to snapshot or record my recs off my TV, if for no other reason than to understand why everyone hates these rankings so much...)

Well the original issue (and one that should probably be brought up here, too) is over sitewide. <_<

Even so, there's quite a disparity. S3D rings have come up quite a lot before on this account.

This is an old point, but there's at least some merit to it.

Um, there's a glitch that lets you go through a wall in that level, the same as the one in Marble 1 and 3, but this doesn't save time because of an already established trick which is quicker.
