http://sonicjam.wikidot.com/nsssp:speed-differences

I have to disagree a -lot- with their "speed ratings" on the s06 video. The ratings in turn make 3d sonic seem far more of an overclock/top haven than it really is (though it certainly has its fair share of that). Using the videos as an argument isn't very fair in the first place, either. One could try to demonstrate the opposite effect by speedrunning mh1 and taking his time on the s06 level to make it appear like 2d sonic is a more repetitive gameplay. Basically, I don't like this part of the website.

The offbeats have a high hat on them, and all the other 16th notes in there are some shaker instrument. Then the last eight beats of each phrase are crescendoing snares (with the old stuff still going on).  And at the first beat of every four beat phrase has some tom or bongo on it. It shouldn't be too hard to replicate with that knowledge. :P

Here's a sample with a basic drumline added from how I hear it at least:

The first two votes of the game, by two people who initially emerged as leaders, are votes worth reacting to. I am not overreacting; had I not accused flyby, the momentum would have kept with me and certainly gotten me lynched. My reaction was clearly appropriate for the situation, as it worked.

So defending myself as a useful townie is "flinching"? I don't see how you can lynch on behavior when there's several people who haven't even posted yet. I'm outed as a power role now too, and I'm not gonna say which. If I live through the day (which is unlikely as of yet), protective role (or even ppa himself) should randomly pick me or ppa, and hope the mafia takes the wrong bait.

What I find even more dubious is the fact that genus has emerged as a leader, despite the fact that ppa is the un cc-d watcher. Sure, janitor antics might be going on, but certainly PPA is a better person to follow than genus right now?

Well, town's dumb.

Good luck winning, now that the watcher is known and you're lynching another crucial power role.

vote: flyby

simply because she is siding quite eagerly with genus.

as I quote directly:

Quote
As much as it is true that the accusations of PPA are not very founded...he is responding so guiltily, which I assume is why genus accused him on something ridiculous in the first place, just to see his reaction. His reaction: guilty. Still want to see how other people are responding etc, but at this point, I would back a PPA lynch.

first suggested by genus on... nothing... flyby even admitted the accusations were based on nothing.

then:

Quote
well i don't want to jump that quickly to a lynch on douglas <_<

first suggested by ppa... and she doesn't want to jump on a lynch? She was pretty quick to jump on a PPA lynch off no evidence, and douglas is being just as fishy as PPA was.

Quote
i almost like to back stefan lynches more than genus lynches even <_<
Vote: Stefan

Again, a suggestion by genus, only this time he actually votes. And flyby gloriously follows suit. Why is flyby so eager to jump on a PPA or Stefan lynch, but not a douglas lynch? Is it because genus suggested them? Flyby is usually really individualistic, why not this game?

And my final piece of evidence: mike would SO recruit flyby to masonry. Almost everyone would.

so yeah, you guys can go ahead and lynch me, but I'm super susp. of flyby and douglas right now.

Why do you need an explanation why the level is freestyle in SADX? I'm just curious why you'd need that. About SA2:B, digging up rings as rouge/knuckles does not increase your score, so it's not an issue.

Competition Central / Re: Idea for version differences
« on: April 29, 2009, 12:20:33 am »
Several glitches -are- banned that destroy competition.

Let's look over that again.

Every banned glitch destroys competition.

What does this mean? If the banned glitch were allowed, competition would cease to exist. In other words, any glitch that leaves -nothing- down to the skill of the competitor will be banned. Glitches that allow for infinite score or rings, or level times that are extremely small regardless of how well the level was played (for example, pausing and restarting upon hitting the goal ring in a SA2 level to get a very low time) are bannable glitches.

Version differences do -not- do this. Version differences keep competition alive, but make the owners of one particular console version advantaged. This doesn't mean a DC owner will beat a GC owner in a level where the DC has the advantage, either. Competition is not destroyed, it still exists. You can still race for the fastest time to execute a version only shortcut, and you can still compete, and often well, if you don't own the better version. For example, yoshifan and I, two SA2 players, own exclusively gamecube systems. This makes several strategies entirely unaccessable to us. Despite this, yoshifan has managed to gain a TREMENDOUS lead over the second place player in SA2, and I've managed a respectable 4th overall in the game. I think this is pretty good evidence that version differences don't destroy competition.

"What if there's a version difference between the PS3 and 360 versions of a game? Do you know what a financial burden that is to a serious competitor?"

If financial burdens are honestly your issue, you should stop competing at tsc. Even playing just a single version of sonic unleashed can ring you up 250 dollars. Newly released games cost 50-60 dollars each. Even the old games I own weighed a pretty penny on my pocket. The fact is that the video game industry is not cheap. If you DON'T want to spend the money to purchase a game on an expensive system, you don't have to. What TSC provides is an outlet for competition for those who do own the game. Splitting charts because they might be out of the budget for some is a ridiculous notion, especially considering people have different levels of affordability. Would you have the same issue if a game got released exclusively for the ps3 and we put up charts for it? Would you complain that the charts shouldn't be recognized on sitewide the same as other games because it's out of the price range of some prospective buyers?

One other thing: I have a big problem to arbitrating version difference suggestions to ONLY 3d sonic. One of the things we've been trying to accomplish at TSC over the last year or so is making a rules set that is consistent across all games. That is, if something is ok in one game, an equal strat should be ok in a different game. Letting version differences pass in games that are emulatable but not in dreamcast/gamecube games is very heavily going against the standard we're trying to set. What if acceptable dreamcast and gamecube emulators  come out (and it's not that unlikely; dolphin is able to emulate sa2:b quite well now)? Would you re-adjust the charts to go back to their old way? Would you let everyone resubmit their old stats? Or would you still maintain your new version difference algorithm?

This post isn't even addressing how unfeasible it would be to
a.) determine the console all submissions were submitted on
b.) get the consent of all submitters to purge a chart

chart splitting just isn't a logical idea, in my eyes.

That's my two cents, at least. (though with the amount of replies to anti-glitchers or chart splitters over the past year, I've got to have donated at least 30 dollars by now.)

But that's not a grammatical error. There's a difference between adding unnecessary commas and hitting the comma key instead of the m key. One boils down to ignorance, while the other boils down to imperfect motor skills.

Not to mention, you incorrectly counted up errors. I quote directly;

"In werster's opening remarks, there are two typos in as many sentences. "Things" should take an apostrophe to denote possession"

"Things" is not in ownership of -anything-. There should be no apostrophe.

Beef / Re: ATTN: werster

-clearly-, -intentionally-? And I'm still the one jumping to conclusions? With some proper research you'd find that "offical" was there before typoist even came into existeance in that signature.

So when I said that they have a correlation, I was entirely correct. Why dispute me?

Quote
...let's put a situation into play here. Say i name my child Dan. Does that mean every single Dan can sue me for identity theft?

Dan is a frequent name, "official typoist of tsc" is not. I can't create a hot dog company and say I'm the "official hot dog provider of the olympics", because it will steal business from whoever is the real hot dog provider.

Quote
Oh yes because "oh look, it says i did it, I must have" is undeniable proof Stefan.

I would say that archived chat information is pretty undisputable proof, yes.

Quote
...Aren't as well known? I'm -suure- you could prove that one Stefan.

My typos are so well known that at the sight of "qhoset" spinballwizard was able to identify the incident in question. Do you have a similarly famous typo? If not, then yes, I would argue mine are more well known.

Quote
Oh you make a good point here Stefan. One major problem though. "offical" and "TSC" aren't in the same sentence as typoist!

So, then, you're saying "And typoist" is a sentence? That is incorrect. The ellipsis, again my modern reasonable deduction of sentence structure, implies that is a continuation of the previous sentence.

Even still, if you are disputing that "offical" and "tsc" are not in the same sentence as typoist, then are you claiming that you are -not- the official tsc typoist? If so, I will take your humble concession.

Genus, failure to speak/type in logical syntax =/= typos. Werster's grammatical ignorance does not mean he makes more frequent typos, it means he's a less eloquent speaker of English.

werster, it comes down to this:

I make a point and have evidence. You say "oh yeah well good luck proving that" as a rebuttal to every point I make.

When are you going to provide evidence? Or are you going to continue hiding behind "oh yeah, like that's proof" and flyby?

Beef / Re: ATTN: werster
« on: March 29, 2009, 04:32:19 pm »
First things first Stefan! It has the title of "offical" not "official"

The "offical" is clearly a typo for official, done intentionally to play fun at being the "official typoist". Any realistic reader would infer the correct meaning from "offical", as there is no other default meaning to infer. Offical is not a word, and so its meaning (until otherwise defined), is automatically defaulted to the word it most clearly resembles from spelling and context. The obvious conclusion here is to assume "official". As such, you are calling yourself the official typoist, no two ways about it.

Quote
You right and well know that means jack squat and won't hold up anywhere

No, what I know is that it makes this a clear case of identity theft. I identify by my typos, as the name "typo" clearly suggests. Usernames are meant to characterize the person who is using them. using "typo" obvious implies I make frequent typos, and calling yourself any title with "typo" in the name (such as offical typoist) is stealing my identity and potentially redirecting attention or questions I'd be getting to you.

Quote
And this just means nothing, I have typoed the same phrase a good and well 6 times, and -still- not corrected myself.

Let's see your proof? Anecdotal evidence isn't going to hold up on the internet, where nearly everything is archived. I have hard, physical documentation of my typos, which were so familiar to regulars at TSC that regulars like Spinballwizard were able to immediately vouch for me and give the data. Your typos aren't as well known, and are not documented.

Quote
-I'm- jumping to conclusions? I'd like to note that no where does it say that the typoist title is official, nor tsc, you have made that up yourself!
If you are unable to see how the "typoist" title is given the defining modifier "TSC", then you are unable to comprehend basic sentence structure. If you say "tsc's offical x and y", the modifiers "tsc offical" apply to both x and y. This is basic English. Can you not get the logic of sentence structure? If not, you're going to have a tough time logically defending yourself. Whether or not you are the "official" typoist is up for grabs, but again by context and spelling it seems very clear to any eye what you were aiming to say. Hiding behind pedantry isn't even going to help here.

Quote
So you can go ahead and waste your $500,000 Stefan because your evidence is worthless.
Face it, you've got absolutely nothing to support your case, Stefan.

My evidence is not worthless, it's concrete evidence that backs up my original accusation. You hold no argument; you're hiding behind the fact that your title of typoist has "offical" in front, as if that makes it something less than what it is. This is a clear case of identity theft. Not to mention, I base my identity off my typos (as seen by the nick "Typo"), and so when that ground is shaken from under me, I suffer severe emotional trauma.

Also, by the fact that you're telling me to waste my $500,000, I assume that you've settled for paying me $500,000? Alright, you can set up a PM to find my paypal/ address for a check. :)

Your signature claims that you are the official "tsc typoist"

I have several pieces of evidence to dispute this claim.

Exhibit a.)

Stefan is now known as Typo

exhibit b.)

I invite you to do a !qsearch for "stefan" or "typo". You will get many that are the result of my bad typos.

exhibit c.)

"qhoset". If you don't know what I'm talking about, you clearly haven't been at TSC long enough to even -consider- giving yourself an "official title", especially one so clearly belonging to other members. If you do recognize it, you'll realize it was a string of typos in which I typoed the same phrase four times consecutively. Either way, you're clearly jumping to ridiculous conclusions to call yourself the official typoist of tsc.

I have presented my case. I am suing you for $500,000 aus or the decision to remove the title of official typoist from your signature. I will accept whichever settlement comes first.

Thank you for your time, Mr. Mckenzie.

Stef, by your logic this is what shortcuts in competition is:

http://web.mit.edu/mna/Public/find_x_lol.jpg

Sure, that counts as finding X, but it's not going to get you any credit in Math class.  Shortcuts are essentially the same thing.  Sure, they get you to the end fast, at the expense of a good portion of the level.

A more apt comparison to the weird example you put above is, in a level where the goal is "reach the goal", to find assorted items throughout the level,  set up something that appears to be a soccer goal, reaching it, and then recording your time.

A shortcut is a means by which you reach an intended end more quickly. A shortcut is like pulling out your calculator, picking a right triangle function, plugging in the numbers, and then using that to find x, instead of doing it on paper (though that would probably take longer on this example :p). Your example is a misinterpretation of the intended goal, and as such you reach a very different, unintended conclusion instead of the ultimate correct answer.

Oh, I'm definitely hotter.

You should -not- have shown your face.

86
The definition of arbitrary bugs you? Something arbitrary is a conclusion that is gained purely on a person's discretion, instead of a pattern.

How does that bug you?

If we pick final egg to separate, and pick nothing else to separate, that's an arbitrary decision. There's no logic in play that makes that decision as to why only final egg should be separated. If you ay it should only happen for levels under 10 second completion time, you just made another arbitrary decision about where the limit should be drawn. There's no particular reason to make it 10 seconds, just because you felt like it.

87
A quick point:

The point of competition is to perform the best, which is generally achieved through having the best route, and being the best at optimizing it. One is defined, as a competitor, from what he does differently than everyone else. If I discover a quick optimization trick that saves a second, and I get the record, it's because I discovered something and did something -nobody else was doing-. It wasn't intuitive, and it wasn't the "main route", because it was a new discovery when I found it.

If we say that taking a shortcut that skips 60% of the level is unfair because it ISN'T TAKING THE FULL DISTANCE OF THE LEVEL, then all those other little optimizations that cut corners and skip parts of a level should be disallowed too. What you end up with is a terrible situation where everyone is tied for the same time.

Destroying shortcuts, especially this arbitrarily, is destroying the essence of competition.

College Basketball is about the only sport I care about. With the stress on academics, the multitude of fairly equal, excellent teams, and the awesomeness that basketball is to begin with, it is a lot of fun to watch. As such, March is probably my favorite month of the year. When the tournament field of 65 excellent college teams playing excellent basketball rolls around, with the guaranteed chaos and awesome fun to watch, I can't help but be pulled in.

If there are other people who feel the same way, I think we should have a TSC NCAA tournament pool. You guys in!? I mean, I might be the only one who cares, but it could be super awesome.
