TSC Race Night / Re: 3D Race Night 1: Sonic Heroes
« on: September 19, 2012, 02:34:41 pm »
Hate to be a noob, but do I need streaming capability to participate in these race nights? Not so much for this week, as I can't enter this week because my copy of Sonic Heroes is approximately 200 miles away, but I would like to do Sonic Adventure 2 in a fortnight. I have no capture card so I can't basically...well, I can do a sucky webcam on TV thing, but that will just look horrible.

For 2D games I should be fine either way as long as it's something I can run in an emulator, though with 2D I'm probably only interested in the Mega Drive games anyway, I'm far too sucky at the portable games to even consider trying.

Ok, so I think given the layout of TRN247, it would be a good idea to start organised weekly(?) deadline-based racing ala flyby's league but instead of having a league, the results of the races simply count towards your TRN247 rankings. All we'd need is a thread and then someone who will choose different levels/zones/games to do. Each week there should be a healthy mixture of 2D and 3D races (perhaps 2-3 of each, depends on interest), and I was thinking perhaps one marathon-qualifying race of each type. These are just ideas I'm chucking at the wall really though. Who would be up for this, and who would be up for running this?

Oh, one point about the first post - you couldn't really just rename the Freestyle stat Super and then come in with the rule that you must transform into Super Sonic by the end of the level because the current freestyle ruling is only that you may transform, so current freestyle stats don't necessarily follow the rules. Intriguingly, it looks like people are transforming into super form as the freestyle times are in many cases slower than the normal times. Nevertheless, can we guarantee that this is true of all the times in those charts?

Trying to make rules for a glitchless run I can see being a total nightmare. We pretty much end up being forced into doing one of two things - making a rule for every potential 'glitch', which isn't great because there are so many, and every one will be a debating point, or we say follow your intuition essentially, which is woolly at best, and may lead to different interpretations from different people. I would say that using intuition, it is clear to me that the boss skip IS a glitch.

Perhaps a more possible idea would be something like a 'zipless' run. It's not quite as good as a total glitchless run but I'm sure it eliminates some things (though admittedly I don't really know the S3&K glitches well, I'm pretty sure some of them are zips). I'm not trying to shoot the idea of glitchless racing in the foot, on the contrary, I really like the idea as I do grow weary of the amount of glitches necessary in speedrunning. However, we need to make sure it's actually feasible before we start using it.

I see no reason why this shouldn't be added. Indeed, I see reason why it should be added, for consistency's sake.

Unfortunately I won't be able to participate this weekend. Maybe that's fortunate however, as Sonic 3 & Knuckles is probably the Sonic game I'm weakest at (that I own). Good luck all and make sure that Sonic 1 comes up soon! I won't vote as I won't be participating.

Well my interest is piqued. Obviously, I got what you were getting at with 247. However, I wasn't sure of how the idea's implementation would work. I look forward to seeing it. Also, I do love the name. Off the irony scale.

The rankings provided in the TRN247 sector would sorta replace a need for a league.

But if my understanding of your concept is right, there's still a place in the world for flyby's league. It was a friendly, trust-based sort of thing where a selection of levels were posted each week and you would submit the best time you achieved in a number of them in that week. Then your times would be scored based on how they compared to the other players and your points would count towards your league position. So you weren't racing directly against anyone, you could do it at a time that suited you, and you needed no streaming capability, yet it still encouraged healthy competition. Of course, my understanding of TRN247 may be wrong, and TRN247 may still cover all those bases. If it does then great. If not, I'd love to see both co-exist.

This is the topic of flyby's league, for everyone's convenience.

I remember flyby's league. I really enjoyed that, so I'd be up for any sort of revival. Obviously it doesn't need to be run by her, as long as we have someone who is willing to run it.

Firstly, I haven't been here properly in a while, though I should say that I check the website at least every week to see what's going on. I'm glad to see that something is being done here to address the current state of the website, which I would say is slight decline.

Ever since I can remember this website has been split into 2 separate assets. Competition, and community. The best way to move forward the way I see is to try and bridge the barrier between these two things as best as possible. The marathon was great. The idea of race nights coming back is also great, and exactly the sort of thing I need to happen. However, I think the whole website needs a reworking somehow that better integrates the competition with the community. 'Social gaming' is a buzz phrase at the moment, and these are the sort of lines I'm thinking along. How to achieve this, I'm not sure. I'm not the most creative person, but I think any changes that are made to this website need to be made with the idea of merging community and competition.

I'd definitely be up for this. I want a bit of practice with SonED 2 and level designing and this would be perfect. I'll go with the general consensus of Emerald Hill as well.

« on: June 22, 2010, 03:32:07 pm »
When you try to look at the profiles of relatively new players at The Mario Center (e.g. packattack), you get an error page. It doesn't appear to be a problem here at Sonic Center, just Mario.

Thank you so much for that tip! I'd found out you could do the trick before you responded, but I tried about 50 times and I couldn't do it because I didn't know about the waiting in the second cutscene! Now I do it's really quite easy.

Galaxy totals>Star Totals is my opinion on the totals.

I'm very pleased with the layout of these charts, I think it's been done in the best possible way. I'll start attacking the charts with times in a few hours. My opinion on totals is simple, yes to galaxy totals and don't really care about star totals, fine if they're there, but I wouldn't miss them if they weren't.

One thing I need to ask you yoshifan, how do you get sub 4 seconds on the first green star of Sky Station?! Seriously, with a run that I think is not too far from perfection I can barely get sub 8. Can you avoid the talk with the luma at the start?

Option 3 definitely. I was wondering if using that option you could have a galaxy total time. No problem if not obviously, but was just something I was wondering. Also, I would put Fluzzerd and Chimp both underneath "Extra", but that's just me.

Quote
Level - galaxy name, Division - star number
    * Totals by star number, as well as a total-total, are possible.
    * Charts of the same galaxy will link to each other.
    * Game doesn't use the numbers (right?)

This looks like the most sensible one to me. Even if the game doesn't use numbers (being British, I don't have the game yet, and therefore do not know), I'd imagine that it's obvious what number is what, and it's most important to make it presentable (and allow the most possible features to operate) I think.

Will it be renamed with a "u" in Colours in Britain. That's the main question on my mind. Because there's no way I'm ever going to buy this game. Not after Unleashed.

Important news about Mario Galaxy 2, it appears to show you the time it took you to complete the level at the end of each level, as shown in a Gamespot playthrough of the first level. I would assume that it will save these times for each level, and store your best. If that really is the case, then we can expect Super Mario Galaxy 2 to be a great game to compete on. This was one change I was really hoping would happen from the first game and Nintendo have read my mind.

(The accuracy the time was shown to was centiseconds, so it has the potential to be very competitive)

109
Well that's good then. Not that I'd want to submit records with it really...I suppose rings would be doable.

I have to say that I'm quite disappointed with SEGA. I'm pretty sure the iPod is perfectly capable of recreating Sonic the Hedgehog without frame rate issues. Why do developers seem to feel it's acceptable to release games with poor frame rate on the iPod. It's just lazy. On any other platform it would be an outrage. I really hope they update it and fix it, but I doubt they will.

Competition Central / Sonic the Hedgehog iPhone/iPod Touch version
« on: May 22, 2009, 11:30:13 am »
This is now downloadable at the App store. It appears to be an accurate port of the original, unlike Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis, though I may be wrong. The only thing that seems different is it drops frame rate quite badly at times. Would records made on this be submittable to the Sonic 1 charts?

P.S. Sorry about my lack of competing in the league. No computer doesn't help that.

Yeah, no offense...actually, yes, offense, but this list hasn't been the greatest in history. I mean come on, just making up a number 5 because you 'forgot' who it was meant to be? I suppose it's better than having none though.

Let me just declare myself the #1 failure of TSC because I can't play and be done with it.

Just a quick glance at your stats tells me there are people who fail plenty more than you!

I could see how that could happen though. Maybe the 1 lap time was an old stat he had. Nevertheless, something in the way of proof would be nice, most people with championships have proof of some sort around that they are actually skillful at their chosen game after all!

I've just noticed recently I made it into a previous Top 10 lol. Ok, so it was basically for making a comment that says 'I suck' in a nicer way, but still...I think it was number 3 or something so I own...may as well check

Cream, that is so true.  We love you very much, as we do everyone who takes part in our grand adventure.  Everyone is important, everyone is special, everyone contributes.
But, don't think that this excuses you from the mocking that everyone else has to tolerate. On to my acid barbs! You suck.

flyby's League / Re: flyby's league
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:10:35 am »
Have I misinterpreted the rules or should I have 3 points worth of achievements in Week 2, for competing in 4 new games? I know it wouldn't make much difference to my horrible placing, but still, every point counts!

118
And yet Sonic 1 and 2's comparatively linear and and simpler levels don't get stale? Hm...I guess that just doesn't make sense to me.

Quicker levels meant that they finished before they got old, for me at least.

119
Why does the length of the levels matter? A single S3K Act is well-designed and more varied than an entire zone in any of the other Genesis Sonic games.

I found certain levels got a bit stale for me.

120
Hate to be late to the party, but anyway, let's put my opinions on the table. People are making out S3K to be an undisputed champion. However, I find it my least favourite of the original 3. It's probably because of nostalgia, I never played S3K as a child, but I'd like to think it's because I disagree with the level length, I preferred the shorter level length of the prior games. Sonic 1 is my favourite, but I know that is just the great memories of me playing that as a child, as I can't find any real justification for it being better than Sonic 2, yet plenty of justification for Sonic 2 being better.

*waits for "you suck" messages*
