Welcome to TSC.

You're missing Sonic Genesis (GBA) from the awesome section of your list. Then again, with no Advance games on your list, I'm guessing you're not a GBA person.

Great, the Sonic 1 level is Star Light 3, one of my worst Sonic 1 levels...

Ok, well I'm in for sure then...guess I've only got ~18 hours to get this week's stats together so I'd better get right to it!

I've been thinking this isn't a very big problem, but I expect when you're competing with the best, then having your console restrict you from getting the best times must get frustrating. I like the concept. But would it be more work to implement than it's worth?

Well I've put the effort into doing that zip before, but that hasn't got me anywhere.

Also, no skill required! If I don't think it would be a conflict of interest, I will be competing in this league, and -I- am probably the worst player here, so, yes, participate!

Good to hear, I'm definitely in then. I notice that you pulled off the Marble 3 zip though, which is more than I can do!

You don't have to be good, do you? If not, I'll join in. I own most Sonic games, but not Sonic Unleashed 360/PS3 (I have Wii version), Sonic '06, Shadow, Sonic and the Black Knight. I'm interested in competing in any game I do have...but please no Werehog!

EDIT: Though actually, if the team idea happens, I kinda prefer the idea of being a 2d player anyway.

The online leaderboard will most likely be riddled with cheaters. May as well have a leaderboard here anyway, for the sake of sitewide rankings, as mentioned above.

News and Updates / Re: What's new in Sonic
« on: March 01, 2009, 07:56:34 am »
Heh, well, Nintendo Power actually gave SADX its second-best review, so it wasn't just them. It had the worst metacritic reviews of any "main" Sonic game until Sonic06 (both Riders games got slightly worse). Bear in mind that it did pretty well on the Dreamcast; its terrible scores on Gamecube were in part punishment for not fixing any of the problems with the original release.

But in comparison to Shadow? To Sonic Heroes? To Sonic and the Secret Rings? I would rate it better than all of those. Of course, it's just an opinion, and yes, it was an old game which they didn't fix problems with, so I suppose it's the Dreamcast game that should take the credit. Sonic '06 never did come out on a Nintendo console.

EDIT: It also scored better than Shadow the Hedgehog at Metacritic (it should be noted that Nintendo Power gave Shadow the Hedgehog the highest rating) I'm aware that isn't a main Sonic game, but it is one of the games that Nintendo Power gave more than SADX.

Erk, Nintendo Power need to get more taste, saying that SADX is the worst Sonic game to come out on a Nintendo console...

General Sonic / Re: What in Sonic 06 needs fixing?
« on: February 23, 2009, 01:16:23 pm »
The homing attack, while good in other sonic games, is pretty lame in this one. It would need serious fixing. The gameplay should be a little closer to Sonic Unleashed, I liked the whole 2d/3d thing of that. However, Sonic Unleashed was a little too focused on reaction tests and speed, a bit more could be given to platforming. There's a time for speed, and a time for platforming, the best Sonic games have both. Sonic '06 currently has neither, at least to any degree of quality. They need to sort that out.

To be honest, I think it would be best to just leave this one alone and focus on making a new game, sometimes it's easier to just start from scratch than try to paper up all the cracks, which is what they'd be doing in trying to fix this game.

2:17 is believable without shortcuts. Even I can do 2:17!...oh...yeah...there are a couple of (developer-intended) shortcuts that I use to get that. Please ignore me.

I was liking how the game sounded a while back, but after seeing a few gameplay videos of it, it kind of turned me away. The gameplay seems pretty good, but the scenery and environment just didn't catch my interest. It is still a bit too early to make an actual decision of buying the game for me though.

Same here.

What the DS really needs is a fully 3d Sonic Adventure style title with limited touch screen interaction and lots of button mashing fun.

I'm not sure how well a 3D sonic on the DS would work. I can see camera being a bigger problem than it already was in Adventure 1&2. Games like Rayman 2 and Super Mario 64 have been successfully ported to the DS, but if you add a bit of Sonic speed to the equation, I think it would turn out horribly wrong. The DS2, on the other hand, could be a different story.

Way to make the guy feel welcome. Nothing like insulting his stats.

It's not that. It's that, judging by some stats he's submitted to TUSC at least, he could easily do better!

That one official stat you submitted is almost as crap as the majority of my stats. You can do better! Why not do Official and Unofficial? Official is more fiercely competed, so a tougher test of your skills.

I've done a little research, and I'm starting to doubt that a good Sonic RPG is possible. Maybe a good game as an RPG, but not as a Sonic game. Sonic games must contain at least 50% speed to be good.

This game is Sonic by name, not by nature. It will be a typical RPG, with changed sprites, maps, and storylines to fit in with the Sonic universe. At least, that's the impression I'm getting off of it. I will not be buying it, that's for sure.
It's not a Sonic game as you mean it though; it's a spinoff.  The point of spinoffs is to put characters from a series into different gameplay settings.  Mario Kart may not have been a 'true' Mario game - does that hinder it?  No.  Why?  Because it doesn't claim to be, it's treatment of the characters is right, it integrates elements of Mario games (shells etc) in an appropriate way, and it's a damn good game in it's own right.

Do I worry this will be a generic RPG with Sonic slapped on for no particular reason other than branding?  Yes.  Do I think it's important that elements of other Sonic games are tightly integrated to stop that?  Yes.  Is speed one of those things?  Possibly; there are plenty of others (rings, spindash, etc).  Do I worry that it won't be a true Sonic game if the gameplay isn't fast and actiony?  No, because it isn't claiming to be.

All I ask is that it be a good game in its own right.

Also, given Sonic's recent/upcoming outings, surely to be a good Sonic game it should contain at least 50% broken cameras, exotic weaponry and stretchy-armed werehogs? (the other 50% being loading screens, obviously >_>).

You get the wrong end of the stick from my post. I'm perfectly aware that it is a spin-off, and so it won't be a typical Sonic affair. That was kind of the point I was trying to make in my post. I said I wasn't going to buy it for a completely different reason, because I don't like RPGs and especially RPGs with turn-based battles (that tapping the screen stuff doesn't make up for it, that is just a stupid gimmick).

I've noticed your submissions to SRB2. I've never played that game, so I can't exactly judge whether they are good, but judging by the fact that most of them are records, and SRB2 has a few competitors, I'd say they must be alright.

Emerald Challenges / Re: Emerald Challenges Unofficially Over

Yeah. I suppose I should let SEGA and Sonicteam take care of that. After all, That's their Jobs right? Heh heh.
Now I'll stop posting before this gets out of hand.

Also good to see you active again Thorn. Although the same could be said about me >_>

Peace!

Well, it's SEGA and Sonic Team's job to produce good Sonic games (they've been failing at their job a lot recently). Of course, the quality of their games probably has a direct effect on the activeness of the Sonic communities. At least I hope so, as Sonic Unleashed looks good! Could bring the community back to life!

News and Updates / Re: Sonic Unleashed at E3
« on: July 18, 2008, 03:43:46 pm »
I absolutely wouldn't want a watered down version, for poor ports are the road to fail.  I want a version tailored to the platform, in the Wii's case to take advantage of the control system.  What worries me is that the Wii title is the same as the PS2 one.

I disagree. Watered down doesn't mean poor port. I only meant that the graphics should be watered down. It can't be a perfect port obviously, the Wii isn't capable of it. However, as is the case with most multiplatform games these days, the 360/PS3 get proper, gaming versions of games and the Wii/PS2 get the simplified 'family' versions. I just want the Wii for once to get a proper version of the game, with the same levels, moves, etc. The only difference should be graphics.

As for playing to its strengths, the Wii's control scheme can be a strength, but in many games, it actually makes the game worse than what it would be without motion sensing. Games like Brawl and Mario Galaxy can still be great fun even with limited use of the motion sensing functions. I for one, feel that you use the technology where appropriate. The SEGA representative said it himself about the Sonic RPG game, when asked about the use of a microphone. He said that it didn't really fit in with the game. I don't think that the Wii motion sensing fits in with Sonic Unleashed.

I do wonder whether I've blown it choosing the Wii as my gaming console for this generation sometimes. It's produced some of the best gaming experiences I've had in a long time, but the quality games are few and far between. And games which are good on the 360/PS3 get the casual treatment on the Wii. I'm all for games being made for casual gamers like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Music, etc. but when games which should be gamers games turn into games made for casuals, then I am not happy.

Sorry, this post is a bit rambly, but it's just my thoughts at the minute about Sonic Unleashed on the Wii and the Wii in general.

I hope they don't mess up the Wii version. They've got a separate developer on the Wii version, which worries me. I would rather have the same game as on the Xbox 360/PS3 with watered-down visuals than have some other development team come in and see what gimmicks they can put in to 'take advantage of' the Wii remote. Mario Galaxy controls would be fine, thank you very much.

Other than that, the day stages look great, like how Sonic Rush would be if it were 3d. The night sections look...boring. I hate fighting games, particularly the kind of fighting game where you are just button mashing (that would be 95% of them then). I'm sure the Werehog stages will be acceptable...I hope anyway.

Is there? I honestly don't know it.

Well there are several reasons why this shouldn't be added in my opinion. I would assume that one of them was the reason why this game hasn't been added (oh, and obviously there IS a reason why it hasn't been added, else it would've been added!)

1) We don't have Sonic Shuffle charts. If you have one, I'd argue we should add the other. And high scores for Secret Ring party games.
2) There wouldn't be enough competitors to make it worthwhile I don't think.
3) Best times and scores are already covered by Nintendo Wi-Fi. (If we were to do as Shadowfan seems to suggest, and have individual divisions for each character, this argument wouldn't apply, but that would be a LOT of charts (17*amount of competable events))
4) It's a pretty boring game
5) A lot of things on there are maxed, and not improvable. It's not like other charts here where new strategies can be found, meaning that competition keeps on going. It would just...die.

Individually, these reasons aren't really reasons not to include the game. However, with all of them, I think it is a fairly strong argument. That being said, if Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games charts were added, I would compete (so with Azure and I, that's 2 competitors already!)

But Visual Boy Advance (the emulator I assume he's using) does replicate the original gameplay doesn't it?
