That is so beautiful and righteous.

I said once that from the info we were getting, we wouldn't be able to tell the difference if the game was called Sonic Adventure 3. And in the end it really is. They went all out. To think I was worried they were going to decanonize or change what we knew about Sonic and start over to impress gamers who hate new Sonic, and nongamers who don't know anything outside the Genesis games. But on the contrary, they went /so far/ as to put Shadow in a jeep. Not only did they make a game for me, but they did the most they could to piss off the haters. What a kickass way to debut for the next generation.

The only downside to it is Eggman's new look. However, I can sort of see the need for it. Really, he doesn't look that different except that they merged him with more plausible proportions. I don't agree with it, but in any case, Eggman and Elise still aren't ultra realistic, and have that slight cartoon look, and everything else is also great. I'm really happy with what we're getting at this point.

That's ok. At least a couple of guys thought it was funny. :]

Sega revealed this week their new title Sonic Hater Adventure, which is apparently designed to appeal to long time critics of the series. "We have finally decided to listen to the foolish hypocrisy of these gamers, who have given up on our franchise a long time ago." said Takashi Iizuka, as he narrated the demo. "We want to show with this game that we really do care about our loyal fans, who we have shamefully turned our backs on until this point. I hope that in this game, every one of their trivial complaints has been addressed."

In Sonic Hater Adventure, Sonic, an obnoxious and reckless short chubby blue hedgehog, uses his supersonic speed to defeat the menacing Dr. Robotnik, while still finding time to get in a chile dog or two. The game takes place on a planet called Mobius, populated by many generic bubble-headed furries who live in straw huts, and Dr. Robotnik, who is bent on conquering the world and covering the natural landscape with morbidly colored factories and cities designed for robots. The environments are a savvy combination of fantasy and cyberpunk, and are designed by legendary european landscape artist Verddun Mahieu.

This may be startling to some, considering that this game turns around design decisions made since the first Sonic, including the world the game takes place, and the name of the villain.
"We knew we had to change if we wanted to reclaim the interest of the boring westerner." said Mr. Iizuka. "American gamers have different perspectives than Japanese gamers. They want everything to be as literal as possible."

The game is slated to feature a modest cast, including one new character named Ashley. Ashley is not playable, instead he serves as Sonic's navigator. He doesn't have any outstanding traits, he is however a level-headed and balanced character. In the demo we played, Ashley helped us guide Sonic through the training stage, and explained how to use the game's unique camera and Z-targeting system in the game's 3D segments.
"Sonic is fast, but very precise to control" Iizuka noted, as he demonstrated using the shoulder buttons to adjust Sonic's speed. "The challenge comes from navigating a series of platforming challenges which steadily increases in difficulty as the game progresses." We were told that about 70 percent through the game, Ashley will have taught you all of Sonic's moves. Supposedly, the game begins to let go of your hand at this point. "At a certain point, you will have to complete the rest of the game on your own, but you would have the controls mastered. Completing Sonic Hater Adventure will be a very rewarding gameplay experience." We have confirmed that the Chaos Emeralds can be attained in Sonic Hater Adventure. We're told that they will increase Sonic's abilities and unlock a new ending, adding replay value to the game.

Other characters to make a return include Amy, who incidentally is renamed Sally Acorn. She has undergone a personality change as well. No longer does she actively chase Sonic -- she is now more reserved and shy. Sonic also apparently has a romantic interest in her as well, and even asks her out in the game's story intro, which introduces the intimidating new Robotnik who captures her before setting the forest on fire. It is at this point that a group of freedom fighters, including Sonic and Ashley, decide to rescue her and defeat Robotnik's reign of terror once and for all, without ever thinking about how he could exist as the only human on the planet. The story is expected to have at least one betrayal and the death of at least one minor character. The tone of Sonic's new adventure is much darker and more serious, but it does not have guns. Sonic's only asset is his speed, and a trusty shoulder bag in which he carries his rings and other various items. Takashi Iizuka closed:
"Sonic Hater Adventure marks the return of Sonic as a respectable creative work."

Sonic Hater Adventure is due to come out this fall for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It's release coincides with the release of the new Sonic the Hedgehog, which is a spin-off release designed to appeal to a less mature market.

In other news, Square Enix announced the release of Final Fantasy 4, named so since it is being touted as the true sequel to the USA release of Final Fantasy 3 (Final Fantasy 6 in Japan). Square Enix made this move to finally restore the number order to the USA line of games. We have little other information about Final Fantasy 4 so far, but Square Enix showed off this concept artwork of the main character, who appears as a bald, gun-toting Pole in camo. We'll keep you up to speed as Square Enix reveals more information about this bold and exotic new direction.

News and Updates / Re: New Sonic PSP game
« on: May 05, 2006, 09:22:16 pm »
Marth, no need to be mad that Sonic Next is excluding Revolution. It's true that Gamecube is the console of choice for Sonic fans now, but that doesn't mean we have to pick Nintendo again from the next consoles. I'll just follow Sonic wherever he ends up.

On the other hand, I was disappointed that Sonic was going to get a game on Revolution at all. Because this means if I want to play both games, I would have to get both systems. Ouch!

Also, Sonic Rivals being on PSP does bite. I don't specifically hate Sony products, but this does mean I would have to get more systems just to be able to complete all the new games. I didn't even get a DS for Sonic Rush yet, but now I'm gonna have to choose which would I rather have between Rush or Rivals, unless I want to overextend my wallet.

I guess Sega wants to spread Sonic to all the markets for maximum selling power. Overwhelming for us, though.

Sounds fanboyishly/fangirlishly unofficial, right?

That's actually, exactly why Sonic is so cool.

The new info, regarding the story and the new character, boosts my interest greatly. I /expect/ to be blown away by the look of the new hedgehog. To me, his addition to the game almost guarantees the game's charm. It guarantees that this game isn't going to take Sonic back to the stone age. (archaic anti-fan ideal of a game with only Sonic and little/no story... then again, this game was said to have an emphasis on story to begin with. but still...) Now it's ok even if the game never gets more colorful than the drab ruins or city. Sonic has a rival to throw catch phrases at and vice versa. <3 <3

But I still have worries. This talk of Sonic changing appearance... that's unsettling. Where did they get 5 foot 11 inches from? Besides, that's too tall. Sonic doesn't actually /look/ taller than he does in Sonic Riders, if you ask me. Is this an official change or just IGN's ridiculous speculation (them saying "robotnik" and referencing chili dogs...) .. and what else has Sega changed? And where are the human characters and/or extras? And adventure stages with townsfolk? Are there going to be hedgehog extras? Are they all going to be hedgehog recolors?

Like I said in a certain chat: Judgement day for my fanfare >:D

Oh and btw:: I think we know who the fourth character in Sonic Rivals is.

naw man. Revolution is a /little bit/ better, than Extreme.

But you know what, Extreme isn't much worse than naming a system '360'. >_>

That's one of about two places in the entire game where you have that many enemies in your face at once (the other one I'm thinking of is also in Starlight), and those aren't even really badniks.

And while the traffic cone and road barrier are certainly urban, that proves nothing because it still just flat-out looks nothing like the screenshots. Really, it's just the same sort of generic city setting that was used in Shadow.

Sonic doesn't have to be constantly quirky/cosmic/surreal all the time... Let it have cities every once in a while. Sometimes they are really slick. Besides, cities are generally fun. Plus Sonic has grew up a little since then. It should be well accepted by now that Sonic lives in cities, very realistic ones at that.

I was going to call on the fact that the screens so far indicated a much more colorful style than Shadow so far, but then I saw these new screen. Ok, wow!! That really does look straight out of Shadow the Hedgehog. In fact, one of the screens looked almost like a copy and paste from an area in Westopolis. Only thing is, Westopolis was kind of cool. And you know what's even cooler? Grinding on the side of a highway shaped like a halfpipe.

I could ask for more color in these screens. The city level has gone down a little in my view with these new screens. I liked Westopolis, but this is supposed to define the next generation of Sonic, and I still haven't seen any profoundly cool rich colorful Sonic style. It shoulda been more like Radical Highway. I wanna see more red and more Nights hotel.

What's wrong with a little combat? I enjoyed all of the extra fighting in SH, (Team Dark was by far, the most fun team to play as.) especially since one of my major complaints with Sonic games is weak or non-existant combat. Does anyone want to take bets on how bad the camera is, since we know that Sonic Team can never design a good camera. Here's the categories for prediction along with an example of a game in that category.
1. Blatently homicidal: (Sonic Adventure 2)
2. Bad: (Sonic Heroes)
3. Moderately incompetent (Shadow the Hedgehog)
4. Good: (3D Zelda games)
5. Great: (Kingdom Hearts 2)

I agree exactly about the combat. Like before, I would argue that Sonic games shouldn't need a combat aspect in the first place... But I think it's positive now. The instant benefit is having decent boss fights as opposed to Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Pretty darn good boss fights in fact. Shadow continued that trend. The side benefit is allowing stronger enemies, giving you more incentive to /avoid/ them whenever you can. Now that's hardcore. Anyway, the third benefit is that adding combat may actually make the gameplay more interesting where applicable, as simple as that.

Kudos for sneaking in an anti-SA2 opinion. Smooooth.

Oh, a Kingdom Hearts fan, huh? Also putting that above Zelda are we? Huh, man. My chat buds are KH fans. They would rip at me for liking Sonic games. Screw you all. :P

all high and mighty cause we play /real time/ rpgs are we.... >_>

Doesn't look like anything groundbreaking yet. I just see more of the same boost panels, more of the same scripted springs, and another token board sequence.

And an SA2-esque slide-kick, lol, sorry Rolk but looks like you were wrong about the rolling too. :B

And the "badniks"? I bet you anything you like they're going to be just like the GUN generic beetle robots, judging by the fact that there are also GUN-esque bipedal robots in others of those new shots.

I say this is going to suck after all if all these hunches are right. :( Way to fail at taking a new direction, Sonic Team.

I think they got the gameplay just about down in SA2. I'm looking for creative gratification. Graphics, story, etc. I'm /almost/ seeing it in the screens so far.

Sa2-esque slide kick: Actually SA2 I don't remember having the slide kick. That started in Heroes. Anyway, there's no clear shot of a slide kick in the screens. Only one that almost looks like rolling, and the other one kind of looks like a 360 degree sweep kick to me. Almost like those fighting game characters like Eddie and Christie from Tekken who dance while fighting. Anyway it could be like some kind of 360 degree attack, something like Tornado jump from Heroes or -something-.

Btw the bipedal robot in the screenshot of the ruins level, is standing next to a robot that's clearly designed by Dr. Eggman. Just saying....

I only saw those 5 screenshots. It's just a pale boring 'green' level showcasing a 1-on-1 race in 2D. Not enough to make a judgement there.

btw that flying eggman bot is getting to look annoying at this point. I didn't think they'd use Heroes models for so long. jeez

Anyway the game's premise seems to be focused on 2-player racing. For that reason, it will be at least pretty good. I look forward to that. It never seemed creative, but for a side release on a handheld, you wouldn't want them to overextend a good storyline anyway.

Well maybe, nothing in the old games quite as obviously urban as in the new games and apparently in this game. But the signs were there. I just think this was on the path of Sonic's evolution. I think it's a matter of perspective. There is little really in the old games that defies the new, and vice versa. I like how Heroes closes the gap a little. I personally would like it to be closed a little more. But to me, Sonic 1 and Sonic Adventure are two pages from the same book.

For the record: Spring Yard, Star Light, Scrap Brain, Chemical Plant, Casino Night, Metropolis, Carnival Night, Stardust Speedway

I wouldn't say he is rolling into them. Looks like a sliding kick to me, a la modern games kthx.

I was SO going to say that, but I withdrew because... I really can't be sure. I thought it looked like he was glide-kicking Heroes/Shadow style, but I also considered that he could be getting hit. However, notice that he is slightly glowing blue in that shot. Well now that I think about it, Sonic and Shadow glow when they kick anyway, so... nevermind ugh. >_<

Quote
Not to mention that it is in an urban setting (though it is a pretty scenery), and that is some kind of crazy horde of badniks. And that the grey robots appear in another screen. With a burning city in the background. And in another screen Sonic is wall running. More like ShtH: Sonic edition amirite.

So the only Sonic 1 like thing is that they are badniks. Eh.

Oh yea right. :P Sonic games have always been in cities, but now with the new systems we can get a real sense of destruction and chaos, and *gasp* vast beauty in the city urban environments. XD Also what's with this game being compared to Sonic 1 all the time? The theory that this game was somehow supposed to mirror Sonic 1, wasn't that just meaningless fan speculation?

Also something this game has that Shadow doesn't: multiple colors!

I remember hearing that Revolution was going to be called something else. Not Wii. This was before the Wii announcement but long after Revolution was revealed. Anyway I don't care what it's called. I wouldn't call it Revolution, though, probably just say 'Nintendo' if Wii really is that bad. Or pretend to not know how to pronounce it and just call it 'why'. Both good ideas. 8|

aanyway, someone told a joke once that as a doctor they would get big bucks treating Wii owners for carpal tunnel syndrome. I have to agree. I still think the controller is uncomfortable and definitely unpractical. So normally I wouldn't intend on getting Wii. Thing is, I gotta follow the franchises I'm hooked to, like Star Fox and maybe F-Zero. If the Sonic game coming out for it isn't a shallow novelty spinoff, I'd have to get it eventually.

I like Egg pawns, too. Besides, badniks were childish looking. It's not like they were original anyway. (take a bee, add some metal highlights, call it an ememy. why are we attached to it?) Of course, the crab robots in this game look veery slick and fun. Because of them, the white robots look a little better already.

No Sonic Team bashing please, btw!

Crowbar: I see what you mean, but on the other hand, we know a lot more about the characters from the games, stuff that the manuals don't tell us, and wouldn't tell us without being an essay. This is a step up from knowing practically nothing from the games and knowing more from the manual than actually playing.

Shadow Wedge: The levels in Shadow aren't as good, but that doesn't mean they are terrible. But still, to make up for it, Shadow has /more/ levels, has multiple missions per level, and adds guns and chaos control to the gameplay. That's a pretty sweet package if you ask me. The game may noy be an example of extreme quality, but that doesn't mark a decline in the franchise. If the game was Sonic Adventure 3 or next gen Sonic, I'd be worried. But it's not, it's a bonus release squeezed in at the end of this console generation. One that, in a sense, isn't even a Sonic game. I'm happy with it, personally.

'critically bad game-engine and uninspired level design' .. Actually, I was referring to camera and contact problems, which I don't notice or aren't bothered by. The levels in Adventure 2 and Heroes are excellent imo, I think you can only really make a case for Shadow. But it's ok because it's Shadow.

Knuckles is said to be jealous of Sonic's way of life, and that he wants to be like him too. This is probably why he left the island and also why he follows Sonic around. Sonic and Knuckles have been friends for a while now so there's no reason they can't be on the same team. Knuckles used to be glued to Angel Island, but there are a lot of possible explanations as to why he doesn't have to guard the master emerald anymore.

In the old games, all we knew about the characters we knew from the manual. But in the new games, their described personalities actually come to life. Thanks to that, we know stuff about them that couldn't easily be put in a manual.

I see this topic is necro'd but I gotta throw this out there:

Sonic is better than it has ever been. It's great, damnit. The games are great, so are the stories and  characters. l33t uptight anti-fans may hate it because they're obligated to hate any changes to a franchise. They auto-hate new characters. They rag on every minor flaw in the 3D games and breath down the franchise's neck expecting god from it. It's hip to brand a franchise for jumping the shark just for growing, so they jump on every reason to hate it, digging up the most superficial reasons possible. (case in point: the topic starter) The gameplay in the new games (starting with SA2 especially) really give the classics a run for their money and has remained hella fun since.

Sonic Adventure enriched and officialized the Sonic world. Sonic and characters were given personality and actually interacted with each other. Characters like Big provided comic relief and showed that not everyone was a superhero. Eggman's designs began to be more slick and original. Everything about it was fresh and stylish. But since it's different from having no story/dialogue and as few characters as possible, people will obviously hate it, because that's the hip thing to do.

and as for Robotnik vs. Eggman: As you may know, his original name was Eggman. He was changed to Robotnik in USA (and maybe other markets) because of localization. It was a time when nobody was supposed to know the differences between japanese and american versions of games, or even know what Japan was. ;| Robotnik 'made more sense' than Eggman since he built robots, showing westerners' unsatiable need to be as boring and literal as possible. Of course, things are different today. They used the Sonic Adventure excuse to ease the audience into the name Eggman, which of course is his original name, and then Sonic Adventure 2 to officialize the name Robotnik as well. This is just like Final Fantasy series being renumbered in the USA to coincide with the complete, Japanese library of Final Fantasy games. It has nothing to do with deterioration of quality, it's actually the opposite. It's a sign of popularity of the franchise and the industry, and professionalism on the part of the producers.

ohh man I got a couple:

Sonic Advance. The level themes were generic and the music was bad, but the main reason this game drives me nuts is the terrible spriting.

Mega Man X5. *sigh*

Mega Man X6. In retrospect this game is better than X5 in gameplay and story. But the graphics and presentation was among the worst ever I've seen ever.

Mega Man Legends 2. No subtitles, and the music way louder than the voices, so I can't hear a single word. But w/e it's my fault for having bad ears. Anyway, I derived that this game is about constant circling strafing, and bosses that take 1000 hits to beat.

Zelda Ocarina of Time. Got stuck in the first dungeon. No idea what I was in for, but when I found out how to get through, I learned this was gonna be /nothing/ like Link to the Past. Got stuck 50 times since then until I've had enough at the ice dungeon. Never beat the game. Never liked modern adventure games since.

Timesplitters 2. Can't even tell when you hit someone in multiplayer.

Star Fox Assault. Yea everyone knows there are free roaming levels in it without Arwing, but that can be good. No reason to judge a game for being different from what you expect. It could be frantic, well-paced, challenging action with good control, right? Right? WRONG.

Ridge Racer 4. Bad graphics, awkward control, no challenge. Also the dorkiest style and car designs ever in the franchise.
