Oh. My. Poop.

That game is awesome. We must keep a record of the best times.

32
Close enough. Anyway, can you shed any light on the subject, Sadistic?

Here's another:

.999~ = sigma(.9*[.1]^[n-1]).

.999~ = .9 + .09 + .009 + .0009 + .00009 + .000009 .... (ad infinitum)
Let a, 1st term = .9
Let r, common ratio = 10 ^ -1
Infinite geometric progression: a + ar + ar²... (ad infinitum)
Sum to infinity = a / (1 - r) = .9 / (1 - .1) = .9 / .9 = 1
.999~ = 1
http://www.geocities.com/admiralmussina/SigmaNinev2.rtf

sigma(n = 1, n -> inf.) 9/(10^n) = Definition of geometric series.
9 * sigma(n = 1, n -> inf.)(1/10)^n = Property of a series.
9 * 1/9 = (r/[1 - r], r = .1)
3/9 = 1/3
.999~ = 1

Let Sequence A = (.9, .99, .999... ad infinitum)
Let Sequence B = (1, 1, 1...)
If sequences A and B were equivalent, then they would have the same limit. In sequence A, the infinith degree holds .999~. For sequence A to be equal to sequence B, then sequence B must have the infinith degree be equal to .999~. Since sequence B holds only 1, then for sequence A and B to be equal, .999~ must equal 1.
Let S = .999~
S = .9 + .09 + .009 + .0009 + .00009 + .000009 .... (ad infinitum)
S = 0.9 + (1/10)S
(9/10)S = .9
1 = S
Sequence A = Sequence B
.999~ = 1

For two numbers to be different, there must be a number between them.
.999~ < N < 1
Find N. Because .999~ has infinite nines, there are no numbers between them, thus N cannot exist. .999~ = 1.

.999~ = .9 + .09 + .009 + .0009 + .00009 + .000009 .... (ad infinitum)
sigma[-1:0 -> inf.](.9 * .10^-1)
omega -> sigma = .9 / (1 - .1) = .9 / .9 = 1
.999~ = 1

.(42)~ = 42/99
.(402)~ = 402/999
.000~ = 0/9
.111~ = 1/9
.222~ = 2/9
.333~ = 3/9
.444~ = 4/9
.555~ = 5/9
.666~ = 6/9
.777~ = 7/9
.888~ = 8/9
.999~ = 9/9
9/9 = 1
.999~ = 1

.333~ = sigma(n = 1, n -> inf.) 3/(10^n) = Definition of geometric series.
3 * sigma(n = 1, n -> inf.) (1/10)^n = Property of a series.
3 * 1/9 = (common ratio, r/[1 - r], r = .1)
3/9 = 1/3
1/3 = .333~
1/3 * 2 = 2/3
.333~ * 2 = .666~
2/3 = .666~
.333~ + .666~ = .999~
1/3 + 2/3 = 3/3
3/3 = .999~
3/3 = 1
.999~ = 1

--- Corollary Proof ---
.999~/3 = .333~
1/3 = .333~
.333~ = .333~
.999~/3 = 1/3
.999~ = 1

If Rolken asks why you didn't get the record, tell him it's because you were getting stoned. He'll understand.

The first game I owned was Sonic Adventure 2, that game came with the Genesis system when I bought it.
O_O

Wow! I'll never say the graphics in SA2 were bad again if it was originally for Genesis!

35
OMG Same time post!

36
The 'mode' button was on top of the Megadrive controller to the right of where the cord comes out; I don't know about the Genesis controllers, though. You can change the Hz on GCN by holding onto B as you turn on your Gamecube, until it comes up with a screen asking if you want to change the Hz mode from 50 to 60.

Anyone else have anything to add?

I'm not paricularly fond of drift 1, it's way too hard, but is drift 2 any better? I'm unlocking it as soon as I buy a gba/gcn link, but that may not be for a week or two.

What game do you unlock it with? *Has cable, SADX, SA2B, and Sonic Heroes as of 12th March*

41
I downloaded a couple of Sonic 1 songs, and realised the music seemed super-fast in comparison to what I'd been used to. I turned on my GCN, and accidently sent it into 60Hz mode. Oddly enough, the music ran at the same pace as it did in the downloaded files. Also, I noticed the game ran a little faster than it used to.

So, my question to you is, have I been playing in 50Hz mode while you guys have been playing in 60Hz mode for my entire life? Certainly this could cause a dispute, as it is considerably easier to play when you have more time to execute each movement. When submitting times, do you have to play in a certain mode? And if so, how does one do that on a Megadrive/Genesis? Maybe that's what the mysterious "mode" button was for...?

*Is confused*

I enjoyed the Chao sections of SA2B, but isn't it too easy to pump a chao up to 3266 (IIRC) for every stat, make them become a chao that doesn't die, and then race/battle them?

Not sure/10

Sonic Center Alert:  Record has been broken! OMFG WTF!!!111

This alert is to inform you that user ybbun has just beaten your old record on Sonic 1 Green Hill 1 with a kick ass new time of 0.01 seconds using only save-states and a bot program!  You've been dropped to 2nd place.  Suicide is the only option.

OMFG You sound like half of LUE. The wiser half.

Good idea/10

General Sonic / So, I have AU$150. Should I buy:
« on: March 01, 2004, 03:57:17 am »
a. Sonic Advance 1 ($50-$70)
b. Sonic Advance 2 ($50-$70)
c. Sonic Heroes ($90-$100)

I have a GCN + GB Player, so any of the above are playable. Heroes will be released in Australia in mid-March, despite claims it was to be released on all three systems on Feb 6th. Damn, the shipping for this country sucks.

*EDIT* b ) turned into B)

Such conflict...I guess that since it's the 29th of Feb, we can all pretend that this day never existed, but that won't resolve this. No, what we need is a good dose of Sonic 2. Go play it. You'll feel better.

TRB MetroidTeam = JOLT'D

Also, I find that often when I submit a time, it goes back to the previous page, or if I post a new message, more often than not it'll go back to the forum list. It's done this ever since I joined around the 8th of Feb. Are these events related?

*Agrees with Rolken*

I'll have to dig that game out. Man, the Adventure games really did have poor replayability if I've forgotten them already, but still play Sonic 2 and S3&K regularly.

BTW, IIRC, at the end of Death Egg Zone 2, it doesn't say you cleared the zone.

But then if you were running a bad time for the second boss, you could "accidently" kill yourself and try again. Maybe there should be an extra section for that particular boss?

Competition Central / Questions about Sonic 3 & Knuckles
« on: February 23, 2004, 05:52:49 am »
1) Good. Why would they call the first zone the name of the entire island? Meh...

2) Fair enough. Are we then assuming that the island needs 7 Chaos Emeralds, 7 Super Emeralds *AND* the Master Emerald to float? That's kinda weird. Wait, no it's not, since without the Chaos Emeralds, there can be no Super Emeralds.

>_>

<_<

*Is confused*

4) Yeah, I'd have to agree there. Mind you, it looks as though Mushroom Hill Zone is pretty damn huge too. Hydrocity and Carnival Night would have to go for smallest, as they'd probably only be the size of a small city each.

5) Damn. I thought I'd beaten your Tails time by a minute :(.

Wait, does that mean that you could essentially do the two different sections at completely different times, add together your best, and see what you get?

Oh well! Time to start up the GCN again!

1) Did you grow up calling the island, "Floating Island", or "Angel Island"?

2) Why is the floating island in the ocean in the introduction of Sonic 3 (both when Sonic turns super and hovers toward the island and on the title screen?)

3) Why on Earth is "Angel Island" so small in Sonic Adventure 1/DX?

4) Which Zone do you think is the largest. Not physically, like the amount you can explore, but by the way the background looks. I'd have to guess either Lava Reef Zone (looks like it stretches forever in the background) or Death Egg Zone (Since it's a like a replica of the Death Star).

5) In Death Egg Zone 2, do you stop timing after you kill the funny thing that protects itself with bumpers, or the big Robotnik that has 6 fingers, and shoots at you with the Master Emerald?

Haha! Well, good luck! Believe me, though, trying to break 54 is tough enough as is. I'll keep working on it too. As I said, though, it took near 100 tries (if not more) to get it right, so don't expect it to come easily.

I'm just glad that I'm finally believed! Being shunned kinda sucked.

Not wrong there, but it's much safer to use the electric ball thingies to get to the top and collect your 200-300 rings. I always exited straight out of those silly casino-night-style bonus levels.

Information Kiosk / I've got a suggestion for some sonic games
« on: February 18, 2004, 12:15:54 am »
While I think that Sonic games should stick to the speed-runs, if you want to include a rings section, it'll add a whole new dimension to the records section. I think, though, that you'll find some people will do it to get new records, and others will not be bothered. I, for one, can't be bothered to waste my time playing for rings in any levels other than Emerald Hill 1 & 2.

Side note: Don't forget that in Sonic 3&K, you could get 999 rings on any level, assuming you get to 4 lampposts or more.

I got the webcam, and I'm sure I can use ArcSoft Showbiz, I have to confess to something: I'm on dial-up. I'm sorry. This really isn't working out. At least I've got the actual time saved - now I just have to get this ****ing video up.

EDIT: Typo

Thanks very much, both for your support, xebra, and your idea, blueblaze. I contacted a friend who has a webcam, and he'll give it to me at school tomorrow. So, assuming I can set it up quickly, hopefully I can upload it here soon.

Brian, I'd be interested to see how you do it. Do you allow Robotnik to fly up a second time? If so, that's why your time is >54 secs. Otherwise, I'm not sure. It took me well over 60 tries to get done the first time with my strategy, and perhaps anoter 30 until it was perfect, so don't expect it to come easily!

Edit: Can I also attach it onto here? It does say:

You may attach a file to this message.
Maximum file size: 16mb

...although I figure that's more for pictures and whatnot.

Before hearing them talk about using the DS, I thought that Sonic Heroes would be it for a while. They've really churned out the games over the last couple of years (Sonic Advance 1/2, Adventure DX/2, Heroes, Mega Collection), so they probably won't stop there. Not if their sales are as good as they hope, anyway.
