Wikkity! / 2010 AFL Footy Tipping Competition
« on: March 24, 2010, 02:22:26 am »
After quite possibly the most boring summer of cricket ever witnessed, footy is finally back. It's shaping up to be another huge year with pundits saying that as many as seven sides could be on the dais on the last Saturday in September. So with the season opener just over 24 hours away there isn't much time to get your tips in for round 1!

Here's how it works: Anyone who's interested can just whack their round 1 tips in here between now and Thursday 25th March at 7:40pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time (that's GMT +11 for those residing overseas) and I'll add your name to the leaderboard. You can jump in beyond the first week but you'll obviously be at a disadvantage.

RULES
Simple enough, there are 8 matches played per round and one round per week; pick the side that you think will win each match in the current round and highlight your selections in bold like so:

Sydney vs Geelong
St. Kilda vs West Coast
Melbourne vs Fremantle

and so on...

For the game each week involving the team you support, you pick the winning margin as well as the result. For instance, I support the Adelaide Crows who are playing against Fremantle in round 1. So my tip for this match could be as follows:

Collingwood vs Adelaide (19 points)

Remember you can only nominate one team to support and hence predict winning margins for/against, and you stick to this team for the season.

SCORING
For each standard correct prediction you pick up 1 point. If you are lucky/astute enough to tip the closest-to-correct winning margin for your team's game, you will gain 1 bonus point for that round. Picking the exact margin will snag you 4 bonus points. At the end of the season (consisting of 22 rounds) the user with the most total points wins the competition for 2010. In the event of a tie between 2 or more people, the difference between their predicted winning margins and the actual margins for the year will be tallied, and he/she with the lowest tally wins the comp. In the very unlikely event that two or more users are still tied, I'll fill a jar full of turnips and you can guess how many are in there. Closest guess wins, but most importantly there will be turnip soup all round afterwards, and if you fancy yourself as an artist I might spare a well-formed, attractive turnip for you to sketch. Seriously if we get a tie at all someone is taking the piss.

IMPORTANT: You've got to get your tips in before the ball is bounced in the first game that week, otherwise you get slapped with the biggest, fattest zero you've ever seen.

Check the ESPN2 TV guide for your area if you're an American interested in catching a few games!

Good luck!

Milwaukee-born Shae McNamara has been signed as a rookie for two years with the Collingwood Football Club, the most powerful club in Australia. He took up the game only very recently and has been working hard on his skill base - there are several videos on youtube showing his training and skill sessions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYCOZ4O0Eh4

His kicking and handball techniques were very awkward, with a two-handed ball drop and stiff follow through with the handball, but he moved well and full credit to him for putting the work in, resulting in the improved kicking action here:

Long way to go and at 24 years old he's a good 6 or 7 years older than the other recruits who will be coming through next season, but I think it's great that he's having a go. Best of luck to him, do your country proud son. Story here:

Season 2009 launch promo right here: http://www.afl.com.au/video/inaleagueofitsown/tabid/14032/Default.aspx

With a fair few Aussies on TSC now and round 1 of the AFL season just a week away, Mike suggested we run a tipping comp. Not a bad idea at all.

So here is how it's going to work, anyone following the season who wants to take part can just whack their round 1 tips in here between now and Thursday 26th March at 7:40pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time (that's GMT +11 for those residing overseas) and I'll add your name to the leaderboard.

SCORING
For each standard correct prediction you are awarded 1 point. If you are lucky/astute enough to tip the closest-to-correct winning margin for your team's game, you will gain 1 bonus point to go with the 1 standard point for picking the result. Successfully picking the exact margin will result in 4 bonus points. At the end of the season (consisting of 22 rounds) the user with the most total points wins the competition for 2009. In the event of a tie between 2 or more users, the difference between their predicted winning margins and the actual margins for the year would be tallied, and he/she with the lowest tally in this case would be crowned the winner. In the very unlikely event that two or more users were still tied, the remaining competitors would be deployed to the Atlantic Ocean to hunt and club as many seals as possible in the alotted time. No wait that's illegal. We'd just leave it as a tie ;)

IMPORTANT: YOU MUST SUBMIT ALL OF YOUR TIPS FOR A PARTICULAR ROUND BEFORE THE FIRST BALL IS BOUNCED THAT WEEK. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN A ZERO SCORE FOR THE ROUND.

Good luck!

Note: A random on the interwebs has said he would upload replays of games played by the Adelaide Crows each week on youtube, but unfortunately the AFL clamped down and had his account removed. Hoping to organise a better setup for next season (or even later this year).

Competition Central / Hi everyone
« on: December 24, 2007, 07:25:41 am »
I could just about put this in the introductions section since I have been away for so long but no, it's here. So where to begin...well I'm back. Not on a full time basis right now but back nevertheless. Some (likely few) of you would remember me. I showed up in the earlier days and registered a little while later. I submitted stats mainly for SA2B but didn't mingle with the community all that much. Little did I know I was being, shall we say, "represented" on the site by a rather unpleasant impersonator who gave my username a bad rep. Unfortunate but you get that.

I stopped playing sonic games competitively because I lost the want to climb up the rankings; ironically the better I got the more disinterested I became. I've teased comebacks once or twice only to once again leave feeling the same way. Well, it has been a long time between drinks but I feel like I'm ready to test the waters again. Thought I would do the polite thing and announce it formally. :)
