The finish line is in sight! Let's get there at warp speed!

TOP TEN ITEM BOXES #5: CLOCK (SCD)

Okay, so in levels this doesn't do much, just freezes the scenery. Not to mention there's only one in the game, it requires a trick to reach, and after reaching it you can't complete the level. But in the special stages, it really shines...giving you 30 FREE SECONDS! Too bad it can't become a factor until your time already sucks. So much potential, so little opportunity.

TOP TEN ITEM BOXES #4: TELEPORT (S2)

Because what's better than potentially going from near the start of the level, to the end, in one fell swoop?

Maybe throwing your opponent onto spikes? Because the teleport can do that too, depending on where you hit it!

TOP TEN ITEM BOXES #3: 100 RINGS (Riders, SR:ZG) (oh wait we don't have images for this game do we)

10 rings? Bah. Even 20...too little. We demand our rings in packages of 100! Unfortunately, the only games with 100-ring boxes also lack ring charts, but you can dream.

TOP TEN ITEM BOXES #2: SPEED SHOE (Pretty much everything)

Simply the penultimate icon of what TSC is all about.

As you may know if you've been around TSC's history, the site was founded on October 23, 2003. Naturally, these countdowns are timed so as to coincide with that anniversary.

What you probably don't know, is that five days prior to that event, the first jolts of electricity were being run through a newly assembled contraption, forty-eight by forty-three by twenty centimeters in size. Granted, nowadays such nascencies are commonplace, certainly more than just one per day, but this was one I would come to know quite well. This one would eventually go on to become...me.

Now that that's taken care of...

TOP TEN ITEM BOXES #6: LIGHTNING SHIELD (S3, S&K, SR, SA, Sv, and just about everything since)

Isn't electricity great?

The 1994 incarnation of this item box was especially strong, staving off one contact hit and any number of projectile or electricity hits, and until then it brought in any and all nearby rings--and in the case you were playing as Sonic, you could also get a midair jump to get to high places easily! What a beating.

Projectiles no longer "bounce off" of shields in more recent games that use this item, and the double-jump action provided by the shield is likewise gone. Still, bringing in swaths of rings quickly is a capability not to be underestimated, particularly on ring charts and timed "collect rings" objectives such as SA2/B mission 2s. For that it earns a spot.

How did you guess?

TOP TEN ITEM BOXES #9: BOMB (KC, SA, SA2)

This item box started out with a fairly mundane purpose in 1995: hit it and you turn into Bomb, the bomb. Wait a minute, Bomb was a terrible character. So you didn't want to hit that. Maybe if you were partnered with Charmy and your partner was flying you all around the stage, you would want to trick him or her into hitting Bomb so that you could lead the charge for once without having to threaten to hit A eleven or twelve times so that the team would be kicked out of the stage. Come to think of it, they had the swap monitor for that. So I guess this was just terrible.

This monitor got a much-needed improvement for the Adventure series, where instead of becoming Bomb, I guess you'd just summon Bomb instantaneously and have it blow up...or some other explanation. In any case, hitting Bomb in those games causes all nearby enemies to blow up! It's even useful for competition under an extremely narrow set of circumstances (Dry Lagoon 5 on GameCube, because the enemies it affects have bomb-proof armor on Dreamcast and even if they didn't, Dreamcast users can take an ever-so-slightly-faster route that doesn't involve having to randomly dig up an item with about 1% probability on the first try). But I guess that's why Bomb is only ninth on the list, instead of one of the higher spots you'll see in the coming days.

Wikkity! / IRC account links erased
« on: July 26, 2008, 04:15:02 pm »
My local database recently became unreadable and had to be reconstructed. Unfortunately, that means all the TSC-IRC nick associations I had in place are no longer there. This is a reminder that if you want back the benefits of linking (new post/PM notifications, ability to vote in poll-of-the-day, and "me" command shorthand), you'll have to reestablish them. Use "!h ln" in chat, and the user settings page, if you don't remember how this is done.

If you don't know what we mean, then perhaps we should assume you don't meet minimum competency requirements for being here and we should just dispose of your presence?

ProTip: We catch on to players trying to skirt around bans via multiple concurrent accounts after a while.

Lameness filter has been set off.  However, a 1-minute-long forum ban would be of minimal use given its time-insensitive nature, so consider yourself smacked by those spears from the ancient echidna army, or something.

News and Updates / Re: YOU DECIDE 2007: Who's the Best at TSC?
« on: June 29, 2007, 10:25:45 am »
This contest will play out over the 31 days of July, with each match starting and ending at 00:00 GMT.
Western US: 5:00 PM
Eastern US: 8:00 PM
UK: 1:00 AM
Western continental Europe: 2:00 AM
Eastern Australia: 10:00 AM
If you live elsewhere, you should be able to figure out the equivalent time from one of these reference points.

The voting process will take place completely over IRC, and I'm responsible for keeping track of the votes and matches automatically.

If you're not aware, we have a system in place now whereby I can recognize links between TSC accounts and IRC names even though they're on entirely separate servers.  To start, go to the user settings page and give yourself a registration password.  Next, get on IRC, make sure you're using a name that's registered and identified with NickServ, and use the command /msg CodeGirl register <name> <passcode>, where <name> is the TSC name you want to link to and <passcode> is the code you entered on the aforementioned page.  From this point on, as long as you're on IRC and identified to the nick you issued the command from, I know who you are.  This voting procedure is one such application of linked names; hopefully we'll think of more uses for integration in the future.

To vote, make sure you know which two members are up for the day's match (it'll be on that table, and probably also in the IRC topic; additionally I announce the current scores every hour on the hour while a match is running), figure out who you want to vote for, then use the command /msg CodeGirl vote <name> where <name> is your desired vote.  There's no single criterion you have to base your vote on; it's up to you to decide who to vote for and why.

You can vote once per day.  It's possible to assign multiple IRC nicks to the same TSC name, but the once-per-day restriction is assigned at the TSC name level.  Additionally, there will be restrictions so that you can't register dozens of TSC names at the last minute and expect to make eligible voters out of them.

Those paths represent local paths on your machine.  The paths are meaningless to anyone else, since they can't see what's on your computer unless you let them in via technical means.  In any case, a path starting with "C:/" is of no use to me.

If you wish to make those images visible to anyone else, you will need to upload them to a site.  If you don't have your own, http://imageshack.us works as a free host, or else you can attach images to your post with a feature built into this forum software.

Wikkity! / Re: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?
« on: June 08, 2007, 07:03:52 pm »
The problem with mixing voting methods is that I can't really keep them synchronized.  The services running on TSC lack an effective method of pushing updates out to me, and having me forward my results to TSC would be more feasible but I'm concerned about mismatched timeservers leading to discrepancies in system time, particularly the time each match begins and ends.  There's still 3 weeks to think of a solution to the integration problem, and in my experience that's plenty of time.

In reference to the comment on one of your stats, "Do you allow robots on this site?" Who knows.  But don't expect to fool them if they are allowed.

You lose.

Twice over.

Everyone, just ignore what the poor ban-evader has to say in this topic.  All of it.  It'll be for the best.

My ears are telling me that the bonus level in SA2/B sounds a lot like the first level in the first Sonic game!  Did anyone ever notice that?

That fell under the *!*cd8e*@* ban.  You've been unbanned now.  It seemed you were banned for a reason, though, so you probably don't want to do whatever it is you were doing that got you banned.

Maybe you should track down a memory card that's USB-compatible, so you can back up your saves to your computer and restore them in case of a tragedy like this.

And if you're trying to break a record, what does it matter how good your save file currently is?  It's going to be beaten, right?

Alltel is an internet service provider, not an IP address.  Try going to http://dnsstuff.com where the top of the page will give you a series of numbers with dots in between, such as "63.127.191.255".  That's the number I'm looking for.

What's the IP on your dad's computer?  Someone can compare it against the ban list.

I hear there have been topics a lot like this one, that were left open and permitted to manifest into what you call "hot topic" status.  Usually it becomes a game of "dogpile on the rabbit," but everyone seems not to mind.  Except possibly the hapless victim, but usually there's a reason for them not to matter.
