1

EDIT: I retract my vote since I realised I'm probably not going to be able to race. If I can I'll log into IRC but I won't vote since I'm not sure.

http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=69 this seems pretty nice, I'm considering ordering one myself. I know their other products like for the SNES works really well so this should too.

I personally use an XBOX controller otherwise and while it's not exactly the best I can deal with it since I'm used to a GC controller. Other than that, there's really nothing wrong with a keyboard if you have a good one but it takes a lot of getting used to.

Just jump until you touch the left barrier and you're just a bit above the spring, then don't press or hold anything until you're past the bumper and it'll work everytime.

The first one's just practise. I could get it maybe 1/5 times after half an hour so just keep at it. It's one of few glitches I'd say is easier on a stick but that might just be me :p.

For the second one, all you have to do is jump into the left side so that you're a small bit above the spring and then not touch anything and it'll work every time.

News and Updates / Re: Possible Xmas Mini-Marathon?
« on: November 25, 2012, 09:18:19 pm »
I still think that the race nights should be hosted on the TSC twitch channel in order for it to grow so it can hype upcoming marathons more efficiently. It could also present the race for next week and hopefully get more people involved in it so the races grow bigger. Basically I'm suggesting someone e.g. FF hosting it and restreaming the 2-4 people in the lead, perhaps with a skype call with the ones more involved.

Regarding when the marathon takes place, I still think the suggested date is good but I also think we're running out of time so I'm not sure what to take a stand for. It's also kind of out of my hands :/.

Here's a theory TAS for glitchless Sonic in S3&K made by Werster:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKy_zpC2LTw

Both me (primat91 on twitch), Mike89 (mike89sda on twitch) and HDL (ihdl on Twitch) does glitchless runs sometimes but I don't think any of us have any of them recorded, be on the lookout.

For sonic 2, just look at regular speedruns and check the maps. The only route's I wouldn't be sure of is through the metropolis stages but otherwise they're pretty straight forward.

For sonic 1 I'd check out this TAS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0VWq1Ur3Cc

I also think that Naegleria has some nice backup strats for it if you check out his AGDQ12 and SGDQ12 runs.

Also, glithless categories are always kind of arbitrary because there's no universal definition for them. HDL has his definition for S3&K which even includes level wraps which you can read more about here:

Good luck

Since not much has been said about the marathon itself I took the liberty to collect all the suggestions/offers so far:

Quote
Sonic 1 - Tee-N-Tee
Sonic 1 - SonicBoom737
Sonic 1 - Cream

Sonic 2 - SonicBoom737
Sonic 2 - TimpZ

S3&K Coop - Flying Fox, RPG/Gamble
S3&K (Sonic 100%?) - TimpZ

SA2B Hero - MasterC
SA2B - ptorflaxendrosis

Sonic Advance 2 (Sonic) - Combo

Sonic 06 - Darkstarblaze
Sonic 06 - Paraxade

Unleashed Wii version - CrypticJacknife

Sonic CD 2011 - CrypticJacknife
Sonic CD 2011 (Tails) - FlyingFox

Sonic Generations - SonicBoom737
Sonic Generations - glacials
Sonic Generations - Paraxade

I'd be preferring to choose the runners that are the most proficient with the game they're running, like Tee-N-Tee doing Sonic 1 but I guess it could be up for votes as well?

Any other updates regarding the marathon like finalised dates? Making the marathon official? If this is going to happen then it should be advertised fairly soon. Also if I'd get a spot somewhere then I'd like to know so I can get the practise done which I'm sure others would like as well.

I talked to TeeNtee and he's up for sonic 1 if he either can get help fixing the quality of his stream or if it's deemed acceptable.

Just a heads up since we talked about it a few days ago but he apparently didn't post here about it.

The problem with Kaillera is that it has like a minimum input lag of 50 milliseconds for both players and usually it's more than that. If you don't live close to each other it's going to be more like a third of a second for at least one of you. It just doesn't work for Sonic games...

If you can get a good co-op run going then that would be pretty cool though. Entertainment value is a big factor but I really hope you can grind out some practise before if you get the spot.

If you want I could do some S3&K. I'm thinking Sonic 100% for lulz and since it hasn't been done before. I got around 1:30 without any practise so I guess I could go down to about 1:20 without much trouble. I could also do Sonic 2 (usually get 26-29 minutes) if you want but there might be other people better suited for that.

If a marathon happens, I know there are a lot of people who know -a lot- about the games they're playing and I'd love some technical and trivia talk during the runs if possible. Come to think of it, some kind of chat game where people can give answers to trivia questions (stuff that can't be googled in 2 minutes) might be fun if we can find a way to do it in a nicely. Perhaps a nice way to round it off towards the end.

Depending on the date I could probably help with management quite a bit if needed.

TSC Race Night / Re: TSC anniversary race night
« on: October 24, 2012, 11:10:16 pm »

Wrong. Cosmo's code DOES do that if that is synergistically the best option, which right now it occasionally is.

All I can say is that a bingo card with the same goal in the same row/column/diagonal since v2 or v3 is unheard of. I haven't looked at the code myself but the way you describe it it might be because of the way you're adding goals, i.e. a code altering on your part.

TSC Race Night / Re: TSC anniversary race night

Cosmo's bingo generator doesn't do an error like that so Cream must've altered the code in some way.

TSC Race Night / Re: TSC anniversary race night

I must say that I personally think bingo for sonic games is a bad idea and I probably won't be playing them much, if at all, at least until it has matured a lot. But if you find something new, fun and interesting then good for you.

Thorn, There's nothing wrong with the same goal appearing multiple times on the same card, that's an intended basic mechanic of the bingo. It does however prevent it from being the same goal multiple times in a single row/column/diagonal.

But until you get a system that allows you to specify which 3 games that cards are getting generated for or at least limit the card generated to a certain set of games (since it otherwise gives a huge unfair advantage due to actually owning them and/or being able to play them) and do a lot of balancing (as is always needed for new bingo's) I don't think there should be a TSC race incorporating them.

About having a lof of rules, there's nothing wrong with that but making a global rule that only applies for one or a few games is stupid. Do it right and do it like this.

EDIT: Alright so I thought about it a bit and the reasons I think pure Bingo aren't going to be good for racing are basically:

1. There's no real routing other than identifying goals you know can do quickly in succession, perhaps with exception to special cases.
2. Multiple games on multiple consoles
3. Sonic games aren't open ended at all. You beat one level, you go to the next and beat that.

Something I think might be interesting though is a goal generator that gives that a bit of that bingo feel. However you can't do this for multiple games in a lot of cases since they're not similar enough. I did this with S3&K since that's the game I know best myself and here's what I'm imagining:

Before you ask, no I didn't even try to balance it. It might be possible to do this in a crossover with Sonic 2. Something I like about this idea is that it allows for the racer to pick their character of choice.

Obviously a lot of balancing would have to be made and more kinds of restrictions/criteria's be thought up. Perhaps even more categories to make anything but "Act" to be more like a real bingo.

So yea that's just my thought on it. Of course any further comments about this idea or bingo in general should be posted in a separate thread but I'm posting it here as part of my argument.

CD2011 flying mechanics sucks ass. Therefore my vote goes for Sonic.

I don't have a preference for racing though I can say that if you don't have the 2011 version there are ways to get it

Idk mostly the regular ones. Mega man, Castlevania, Sonic, Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Pokemon, Most RARE games (DK, BK, CBFD etc.). I remember how I sometimes put my Brawl disc on just to listen to the music a lot of years ago. The Fallout series has a lot of commercial songs but in good taste.

Also I have to voice my love for the Crazy Bus main theme on Genesis. It could be considered a series if you count all the released versions.

My personal preference would be no skills all acts and bosses (not the emerald ones). Basically because it skips all the bullshit like cutscenes and much of the loading and because it only requires a save file where you've beaten the game.

Otherwise I'd go for new save file too but I really despise most of the missions.

Competition Central / Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and start positions
« on: October 13, 2012, 03:08:43 pm »
Alright so I'm starting this for the sake of having a discussion about it.

First of all, Knuckles is playable in both Death Egg 1 and 2. He can't complete DE1 but he can complete DE2. How would people feel about adding that to the leaderboards?

Second of all, there's this glitch where you can play as blue knuckles. I'm not saying we should add a blue knuckles board but since you start at sonic position it could potentially produce some interesting strats for a couple of levels like LR1 or MH1. Most notable though is LB2 where you can do the same glitch sonic does and do the level wrap to the end. Would this be considered a legit strat for the knuckles board?

That said, I haven't had the pleasure to try the blue knuckles glitch on a genesis so I'm not sure if it would fall under the category of version differences.

Third of all. What about going the sonic route like in IC1 and start from sonic position there or the opposite where you go to knuckles route as sonic. What's considered about those strats?

EDIT: The rules say this "You may start any zone's Act 2 from the end of Act 1 or from selecting Act 2 in stage select, but from nowhere else." but it doesn't define what is the end of the act, such as the case with Ice cap nor mentions anything about what starting position is chosen from the level select.

I honestly didn't even know there was a Sonic 2 race night. Promotion is an important thing...

In any case I'd race Sonic 1, 2, 3&K, CD, Adventure, Adventure 2.

I might try some of the advance games or a random one for fun. But otherwise these are pretty much sure bets with me.

I also want to get the idea for romhacks out. Stuff like Amy in Sonic 1 is golden.

If you can't race then start a new file and type out the times as you get them. If you later get called out you can just get a cellphone or something and photo your tv.

TSC Race Night / Re: Race nights so far...
« on: October 05, 2012, 04:02:24 pm »
Cool. Now we just need an official page on the site where the rules and stuff are spelled out, past races and the upcoming race is presented. To have everything on the race page in the forum could work but it could easily become kind of cluttered or hard to navigate and such. Or at least keep the current system up with some modifications such as adding the set-in-stone time and then make every new race a new topic with game and date in the subject.

Make it official baby!

TSC Race Night / Re: Race nights so far...
« on: October 05, 2012, 03:09:44 pm »
My point is, this is all very loosely strung together and if you want this to be a nice cool regular big race for sonic games then either someone needs to step up or more time is needed to get something organised. I mean not even the front page has been updated since S3&K and you want hype for SA2 which is tomorrow?

I'm just trying to be blunt about it, this topic is regarding race nights so far and my opinion is that this needs some more focus on it or it's going to die out pretty fast.

I'm sorry, is there a big race this weekend for one of the most popular speedrunned Sonic games? Date, time, version differences rulings, category, how to join, hype etc etc etc?

I think I know why race night fails...
