News and Updates / Even the OLD new sonic games suck
« on: October 15, 2006, 09:15:18 pm »
Watch and weep. They've somehow managed to edit Sonic 1 GBA to bring it up to date with the rest of the series, adding such features as a crappy framerate and glitchy broken physics. And it's supposedly 95% complete. Heavens help us.

Addendum: Please, no one support this kind of shameless abuse of Sonic. Sega has constantly been pushing the bar in the degree of greed and apathy towards quality with which they "develop" their games, and at some point there has to be something said against it. If it remains in the current state, I do not intend to create rankings for it; to have such a mockery of decent Sonic games on our rankings is abominable. There's plenty of fan-made Sonic 1 hacks out there with spindashing that are of far better quality.

Addendum pt2: It's worth noting that the rape doesn't end with destroying the physics and framerate. There was a video on cult (toward the end) of the GHZ boss, which has been completely nerfed; the boss no longer swings in sync with his movements, so it's now safe to just stand on the platforms and attack when Eggman approaches for the first four swings or so. And in another trick from the Sonic next-gen book, Sonic falls through a platform at one point. Totally unacceptable.

Competition Central / SPA maps

Get em while they're hot. They don't have sprites yet, so I'll wait to put them on the main site. Surely anyone who cares about SPA reads the forum anyway >_>

Competition Central / Yet another TBG topic
« on: October 14, 2006, 02:18:25 am »
I was under the impression that the Heroes rankings were basically past the point of no return as far as separating TBG out is concerned. I've since been corrected in that in actuality the top two players never used it and most of the records are TBG-free. Is this true? If so, I think there is valid justification to separate out TBG rankings, as it seems both TBG-free and TBG-abused competition could benefit from the clarification. Opinions?

News and Updates / The TSC Emulation Project
« on: October 10, 2006, 01:05:22 pm »
Thus far emulation has been allowed here under a sort of gentleman's agreement - don't cheat with savestates, don't slow down your PC, etc etc. As part of my general inclination towards greater clarity on our methods, I think it's time we standardize and rigorize this.

There're open source emulators for MegaDrive/Genesis, Master System and GBA - basically every 2D system except DS. I propose we modify each of them to create a "speedrun edition" which a) disallows savestates except perhaps level select, and b) automatically generates encrypted movie files (as SM mentioned in chat) that also store the real-time emulator speed. Not only does it render the emulator uncheatable, it provides instant proof of any records you achieve, and could even allow competitiors to compare centisecond on 16-bit games.

This all is new territory for me, so if anyone wants to help out I'd love it. As usual I'm prepared to make the effort myself, but with TSC4 occupying my Sonic schedule and my general lack of emulator experience it'd be awhile before I could get around to finishing it all. I think it's significant enough to justify doing in any event tho.

News and Updates / "Next-gen" TSC progress continues~
« on: October 03, 2006, 02:42:08 pm »
I might as well describe some of the new stuff I've been working on.

- Skins. At least two, maybe three if I get creative. Here's the one I'm working on presently. I've ditched the non-dark Sandopolis styles for now as I just can't get them to a state I'm happy with.
- Custom pages and alerts. If you wanna know when someone beats your records, tell the site how to notify you and it'll do so. Or when there're new videos for a game, or so on.
- Historical graphs. Track your COMPETITIVE JOURNEY across TIME. ZOMG!!!
- Robust proof/challenge system. Sort of more 'official channels' to take things through and demonstrate to what level records have been proven.
- More thorough media section. Instead of just a table with a link to each video, better and more complete information on each entry.

And, of course, everything expounded upon in the topics across the past half year or so still applies - the article system, administration, awards, and other A words. We're entering the home stretch...

edit - already remembered some stuff I missed heh.

News and Updates / And on the Wii side of things... (updated)
« on: September 29, 2006, 08:53:42 am »
This article on Sonic and the Secret Rings (ugh) is about a week old, but I hadn't seen it so maybe some others haven't either. Some interesting snippets (now updated from other articles):

- 70 missions with "boss battles mixed in" (so probably 15-20 levels)
- Single player mode and 30 4-player minigames (think Super Monkey Ball)
- "Sonic customization system" similar to PSO3, apparently "a little bit more complicated than an RPG"
-  Dev team slightly smaller than Sonic 06, since developing for only one console
- Short levels (3-4min), roughly 10 hours to completion

The article has a lot more details; I recommend it.

News and Updates / Sonic 06 demo on Xbox Live
« on: September 27, 2006, 09:12:09 am »
Title says it. I don't have a 360 myself to try it out, but reactions from the Penny Arcade guys are more or less that the music is good, but the gameplay is meh - basically Sonic Adventure 3. Not a big surprise, but now there's confirmation.

edit: OK, 'Sonic Adventure 3' is probably giving it too much credit. More like 'Sonic Adventure .5' or alternatively 'digital abortion', if the opinions I'm hearing are any indication. Oh well, we'll still rank it.

News and Updates / Snippets of Sonic 06 news
« on: September 08, 2006, 10:35:50 am »
The Japanese Sonic 06 site is up, and various details have been gleaned from it through things both stated and insufficiently blurred. The flash site itself is being slow to load if at all, so I'll link another site with screenshots and the theme music. The characters screen also reveals the silhouettes of what appear to be Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, a robot, and Blaze.

I haven't been able to reach the levels screen myself, but Wikipedia lists the action stages as being insufficiently blurred as Kingdom Valley, Crisis City, Tropical Jungle, Wave Ocean, Dusty Desert, White Aquapolis, Plane Core, Radical Train, Aquatic Base, and End of the World, for 10 total. The first two were in the E3 demo and the third has screenshots on the site.

News and Updates / TSC status
« on: August 15, 2006, 01:00:57 pm »
Various notes on things...

The site is still slow. This I hope to remedy by moving the site to our own computer in a few weeks since we're getting a fiber connection with superspeedy uploads, which will have the added benefit of freeing restrictions on other things such as video sending.

All the site-chatroom stuff is broken. This is because both the IRC networks' stats site is broken and Team Artail (where the chat client is secretly hosted) appears to be down. The client itself should be rectifiable; I'm not sure about the stats, but you can be assured that there are lots of members. You can still get in through a proper IRC client, of course.

TSC4 target is at one month and holding - meaning at the moment progress is at a full stop, as flyby and I are getting married this weekend (and various other things such as present restriction to crappy AOL dialup access).

Further updates as events warrant~

Information Kiosk / Summer of Sonic involvement
« on: June 26, 2006, 01:13:13 am »
There hasn't been much communication between Dreadknux and I on SoS, but at one point he gave the general thumbs up to our involvement in it, so I think we should just get some stuff together and send it to him and make him put it up. Things that I am pro us contributing are a couple standout videos, maybe a guide or two and some articles on the nature of competition, how to get involved and such; I have written some and can write up that sort of stuff or whoever else wants to can do that too (especially those with more l33t skillz than I). I'm away from home for now and only have dialup access from a not mine PC, which is why I've been absent lately; I probably won't be responding to this in a timely manner, so if anyone wants to put anything in just send it (or note it if it's already on TSC somewhere) and the next time I'm on in a few days to a week I'll gather it all up and send it off. :o

Jun 03 16:40:04 <Zizou_SCD> no
Jun 03 16:40:06 <Zizou_SCD> lol
Jun 03 16:40:18 <Rolken> wat
Jun 03 16:40:31 <Zizou_SCD> Let's put away the swords
Jun 03 16:40:56 <Rolken> but I like mine
Jun 03 16:41:36 <Zizou_SCD> sure you do
Jun 03 16:41:49 <Zizou_SCD> Now you can keep acting like an ass or actually try and solve this.
Jun 03 16:41:57 <Zizou_SCD> Im dont wanna waste my time
Jun 03 16:42:05 <Zizou_SCD> I*
Jun 03 16:42:13 <Rolken> is there something going on I don't know about?
Jun 03 16:42:51 <Zizou_SCD> no nothing bad something, but I have something to propose
Jun 03 16:43:04 <Zizou_SCD> But since you dont like me at all, especially as of now
Jun 03 16:43:13 <Zizou_SCD> I doubt that it would work
Jun 03 16:43:37 <Rolken> that's too bad :(
Jun 03 16:43:44 <Zizou_SCD> Indeed that is
Jun 03 16:43:53 <Zizou_SCD> But we, you and me can change that
Jun 03 16:44:52 <Zizou_SCD> so what do you say?
Jun 03 16:45:00 <Zizou_SCD> wanna be friends?
Jun 03 16:46:14 <Zizou_SCD> common man dont ignore me
Jun 03 16:46:20 <Rolken> I don't typically make friends through random PMs deciding to be friends :X
Jun 03 16:46:32 <Zizou_SCD> That's too bad
Jun 03 16:46:47 <Zizou_SCD> Anyways heres what I had in mind
Jun 03 16:47:03 <Zizou_SCD> what if we united?
Jun 03 16:47:31 <Rolken> hm?
Jun 03 16:48:18 <Rolken> tbh scd isn't really relevant to me
Jun 03 16:48:27 <Zizou_SCD> What we created the world's biggest SEGA Sonic Classic online gaming network
Jun 03 16:48:37 <Zizou_SCD> you can keep your part
Jun 03 16:48:53 <Zizou_SCD> listen before you make conclusions
Jun 03 16:49:35 <Zizou_SCD> sure we'd have indepent sites, along with other ones that we (SCD) will already have
Jun 03 16:50:00 <Zizou_SCD> such as radio, a flash studio, a game making team etc...
Jun 03 16:50:26 <Rolken> so er... what's the point?
Jun 03 16:50:26 <Zizou_SCD> but on top of it we would'nt name it TSC NET NOOB or SCD NOOB HOOKS
Jun 03 16:50:40 <Zizou_SCD> We'd give a new indepent name
Jun 03 16:50:55 <Zizou_SCD> the point is that with the support of both of our franchises
Jun 03 16:51:05 <Zizou_SCD> we could create something huge and active
Jun 03 16:51:21 <Zizou_SCD> and I cant do it without you, neither you can do it without me
Jun 03 16:51:56 <Rolken> but I don't want to create something huge and active.
Jun 03 16:52:02 <Zizou_SCD> exactly
Jun 03 16:52:04 <Zizou_SCD> you wont
Jun 03 16:52:13 <Rolken> er?
Jun 03 16:52:28 <Zizou_SCD> all you could be taking care of is TSC if you want
Jun 03 16:52:35 <Zizou_SCD> just like i'd be taking  care of SCD
Jun 03 16:52:43 <Zizou_SCD> and another operating the radio
Jun 03 16:52:46 <Zizou_SCD> and so on
Jun 03 16:53:14 <Rolken> so it'd be a huge network, only it'd be just like it is now?
Jun 03 16:53:48 <Zizou_SCD> basically
Jun 03 16:53:52 <Zizou_SCD> hmm
Jun 03 16:54:04 <Zizou_SCD> we'd all give each other a hand
Jun 03 16:54:17 <Zizou_SCD> for example
Jun 03 16:54:27 <Zizou_SCD> Sonic Olympics would no longer be mine, but ours
Jun 03 16:55:24 <Rolken> I guess basically I don't think you have anything to offer me or TSC.
Jun 03 16:55:41 <Zizou_SCD> How come?
Jun 03 16:56:11 <Rolken> we don't really want more traffic
Jun 03 16:56:18 <Rolken> and we're moving away from sonic
Jun 03 16:56:39 <Zizou_SCD> Then what is it that you want?
Jun 03 16:57:16 <Rolken> tbh I don't know XD
Jun 03 16:57:31 <Rolken> I'm used to just doing what we need myself.
Jun 03 16:57:59 <Rolken> and you're not really saying much tangible aside from the olympics thing :X
Jun 03 16:58:22 <Zizou_SCD> ok
Jun 03 16:58:34 <Rolken> we appreciate traffic from intelligent people
Jun 03 16:58:34 <Zizou_SCD> think of teh bigz TSS NET
Jun 03 16:58:47 <Rolken> but I don't hold pretty much any of the rest of the sonic community to be up to our standards :X
Jun 03 16:59:09 <Zizou_SCD> this isn't about the sonic cmmunity
Jun 03 16:59:27 <Zizou_SCD> its to create the biggest SEGA Gaming network
Jun 03 16:59:39 <Zizou_SCD> instead of having people always talk about playing games in their post
Jun 03 16:59:47 <Zizou_SCD> our goal would be to have them play them
Jun 03 16:59:52 <Zizou_SCD> which they will
Jun 03 17:00:06 <Zizou_SCD> because of the numerous great activities that we'd have
Jun 03 17:00:22 <Zizou_SCD> TSC's great online scoring database
Jun 03 17:00:32 <Zizou_SCD> SCD's online gaming servers
Jun 03 17:00:38 <Zizou_SCD> Emerald challenges and so on
Jun 03 17:01:07 <Rolken> eh
Jun 03 17:01:15 <Rolken> I'll talk to the TSC folks about it
Jun 03 17:01:24 <Rolken> but in the end I just don't think that's a vision I share
Jun 03 17:01:41 <Rolken> and tbh I don't feel you have enough to contribute
Jun 03 17:01:54 <Zizou_SCD> enough?
Jun 03 17:01:59 <Zizou_SCD> Dont you mean that we have more?
Jun 03 17:02:11 <Rolken> er... sure?
Jun 03 17:02:33 <Zizou_SCD> You;re not giving this a chance
Jun 03 17:02:44 <Zizou_SCD> and I'm not here to gobble you up or to kiss your ass
Jun 03 17:02:57 <Zizou_SCD> you are what you are and you do what you do
Jun 03 17:03:03 <Zizou_SCD> Which I respect
Jun 03 17:04:16 <Zizou_SCD> we're 2 very different communities, but both believe to play games and such:)
Jun 03 17:04:38 <Zizou_SCD> I would really like it if you considered this
Jun 03 17:04:42 <Zizou_SCD> dont shoot it down
Jun 03 17:05:16 <Rolken> I'll consider it.

News and Updates / TSC4 - The future of game competition
« on: May 10, 2006, 07:46:08 pm »
I have been holding off on divulging the entirety of my plans for TSC because I was not sure they would not be altered. But now recent events leave me decided. So here it is.

TSC4... is not TSC!

In the future, TSC will be one segment of the broader vision - a fully extensible competition network composed of multiple subsites for competition in various game series. A series fan (or fans) can create their own site design and administer rankings built on the TSC4 back end, with automated statistics and content. It is the future!

Think halfway between what TSC is now and what Cyberscore is - we extend beyond Sonic, but rather than doing so with zillions of generic rankings, we have the media and community and Sonicyness (or whatever) that makes us awesome.

Specifically, there're a few pieces that need to come together to finish the puzzle - a semi-simple skin framework (mostly fulfilled by F-Man), backend administration, the content system, and a more robust database. Work is in progress on all four, and nearing completion on a few. It'll be a few months before it all comes to a release-level point, and probably a few more before everything's polished. And when it is, it'll pwn.

Mario Center, anyone? >_>

News and Updates / noooo why sonic team why!?
« on: May 10, 2006, 12:38:26 pm »
This just in: SONIC 2006 SUCKS. Ripped straight from 1up-

What we like: Well, it sure is fast -- almost too fast. Speed is one thing, but when it comes at the expense of actual, sensible playability, we have to wonder who on Sonic Team is drinking all the red bull. For such a mass-market product, Sonic the Hedgehog takes some serious twitch reflexes to keep you from zooming off into space (at which point you fall to your "death" and lose a life). It's hardcore in some ways, which is cool, but like the ensemble casts of Sonic's recent adventures, he too shares the spotlight here.

What we dislike: We hate when he has to share the spotlight. Memories of the recent Shadow the Hedgehog haunted us when we saw Shadow driving a jeep around blowing things up with rockets. If we wanted this we'd be playing Grand Theft Auto rip-offs instead. The new playable character's telekinetic powers also sap the "speed" element Sega's so keen to point out, by forcing the player to deal with bad guys by mentally lifting up crates and slamming them into the enemies. We couldn't really seem to do anything particularly effective when we tried to get feng shui on the bad guys, so we just gave up and switched back to Sonic. Sonic's levels sure do look beautiful, but it's more of the same "robots waiting to get hit with the Sonic spinball," while various smash-able crates and walls "block" the path. It's pretty, and it's fast, but ultimately it felt kind of shallow. And the guy who was playing the demo before we got our hands on the controller jumped into the abyss probably 15 times simply because he couldn't keep up with the blindingly fast camera changes. Whoops!

http://e3.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3150561

Even the stuff they "like" is stuff they don't actually like! D: D: D:

News and Updates / Nextgen Sonic may yet not suck!
« on: April 28, 2006, 08:01:18 pm »
Observe, from some random person's photobucket, the current status on nextgen Sonic. But, what's this...

It has neither generic beetles or spindly nextgen demo grey robots nor retardedly gay Heroes eggbots, but PROPER BADNIKS! and Sonic's ROLLING INTO THEM! It's like Sonic 1 all over again, for real!

Now, let's not get overexcited. This is still being made by Sonic Team, after all. But it at least has a chance!

edit: Sorry bout you guys reading this on the front page. I'll fix that lame BBcode after I move this weekend.

smtp's Marble 1 ring count of 133 is officially impossible, as verified by SonED. This seems sufficient pretense to also suspend his superlow CP1 0:53 time, and maybe his stats in general, seeing as how he isn't responding to email.

Competition Central / Pseudo-competition shenanigans
« on: April 13, 2006, 02:41:45 pm »
Since cf is a ho and won't play any decent games I did some sonic 1 yesterday. Largely because douglas has only 88.9% so maybe I stand a fightin chance of not sucking, plus without spindash maybe it's simpler amirite. D:

So basically I just did RA because hey that's easy and you can knock off like 10-20 points a shot. Marble Zone = pwned except smtp's 133 on Marble 1 which probably needs nuking. so that's 50-odd points off my comedy rings I submitted before for who knows what reason.

Also Green Hill 1 is a ho to RA. Blah. Tried SpringYard1 halfheartedly, conclusion: Sonic 1 needs more linear levels like Marble amirite.

ps I beat eredani :O ONLY 421 POINTS TO GO.

So mr cf keeps insisting that he gets mods. Also he sucks too badly at shadow to get red, his challenge of the past half year or so. So a NEW CHALLENGE IS ISSUED:

CF must seize one of my championships (chaos/STT/SPA), and keep it for a day.

Now if he can't do that he's basically admitting total noobdom amirite.

News and Updates / New Stardust style: Good Future Proto
« on: April 07, 2006, 01:55:51 am »
I found these images while browsing the Sonic CD prototype section of Rlan's site on the internet, and I thought, hey, that's pretty cool, and 100% less pink than the final version. So I made a style from it. I still might tinker around with the colors a bit. Opinions?

Update: GFP made default style.

News and Updates / New date format option
« on: April 04, 2006, 05:16:51 am »
If you head over to User Settings, you'll notice a new date format entry. The way it works is a bit obscure but can be pretty useful, so I'll give a few examples here.

The basic idea is that you can put whatever punctuation connectors you want, along with the proper format characters, to format it whichever way you like. For example...

m-d-y, the usual up to now, will show something like 12-31-05.
d-m-y would show 31-12-05.
You can get a bit zanier and do something like
m/d/y for 12/31/05,
or include times by doing
m/d/y H:i for 12/31/05 23:59
or alternatively
m/d/y h:i A for 12/31/05 11:59 PM.
And if you REALLY have horizontal resolution to burn, you can even do
h:i:s A, F jS, Y for 11:59:59 PM, December 31st, 2005.
(note that trying to put 'on' in there won't work, nor will most letters)

If you add a time, it'll be dependent on your time zone setting in the forum; I'll get around to adding that to the user settings page sometime soon.
