There's a few things I think they did better than the Advance games (grinding, anyone?). I'm all about adding it to the rankings, if y'all're up for it.

« on: February 18, 2004, 04:20:15 pm »
For those who don't know yet, if you press B+X/B+Y while in flying mode, it's possible to fill up your team blast meter in just a few seconds. Obviously, this dramatically changes how Team Dark works.

http://www.1up.com/article2/0,4364,1529011,00.asp

Some notable highlights - you pick both a main character and a side (uncontrollable) character who affects the moves you can use (think Tails flying with Sonic). This also makes possible a co-op mode for multiplayer in which you explore different parts of the level. Another new feature: the "Zone Map" works sorta like in Mario World, except it's actually a Sonic stage, where you look for stage entrances. Sounds cool to me!

The first two zones are apparently named "Route 99" and "Sunset Hill"; there also seem to be a cityscape (maybe Route 99 again), a fantasy type zone and a techno zone.

Wikkity! / IRC?
« on: February 14, 2004, 07:36:47 pm »
Does anybody want / know how to use IRC? A few months ago we had a chatroom, but nobody was in it, but now we're a lot bigger so perhaps there's more demand.

For those not in the know, IRC is a chat room system that sucks a lot less than AOL's chatrooms.

Competition Central / Emulating Sonic CD for dummies
« on: February 14, 2004, 02:58:17 pm »
[originally posted on the first forum]

Normally I wouldn't make a topic like this. But Sega's been so incompetent in getting us Sonic CD on its own that I fear it never will. To my knowledge, it hasn't been on any compilation thus far, and for all practical purposes the PC version doesn't matter. The beef with the PC version, if you didn't know, is that it won't run with Direct X 9 / Windows XP, because it uses obsolete functionality. That's to be expected when Sega picks such a shoddy company as Expert to do its ports (and if the buzz on SADX PC is any indication, since the disappearance of Expert they've taken up the burden of making shoddy ports themselves).

So here is exactly what you need to do to get it working.

1) Get Gens, a Genesis/SegaCD/32X emulator. Make a directory somewhere on your PC and unzip it there.

2) Head over to the ISOs page of Sonic Stuff and download the BIOSes and the American or Japanese version of Sonic CD (they're all around 25MB zipped, so get ready to wait if you're on dialup). An ISO is kinda like a ROM, except it's a CD image instead of a cart. None of them have music. Unzip them to the same directory you put Gens in. If you don't care about music, you can skip the next two steps.

3) For the Japanese soundtrack (which is almost universally preferred over the American, though I like both), head over to this place; you need a GameSpy ID to download anything. If you don't have a GameSpy ID, try Sonic Stadium; they seem to be down now, but hopefully it'll be up by the time you try it. Prolly hackers again. All the music should be in the same directory as everything else. If anybody wants the American soundtrack I can rip it from my dysfunctional PC copy of Sonic CD, since I can't find it online.

4) Now we have to rename all the music files so Gens recognizes that they go with Sonic CD. They should be named as "[game name] [track].mp3", where [game name] is the name of the .iso. Time Warp (which you don't have, but isn't used in the game anyway) is Track 02, and numbering goes up from there. You have to number them 03, 04, etc - if you just use one digit, it won't work. So if you downloaded the American ISO, Palmtree Panic Present should become "scd_usa 03.mp3".

Edit: Here's the track listing, stolen from Sonic Cult.

2. - unused track -
3. Palmtree Panic Present
4. Palmtree Panic "G" mix
5. Palmtree Panic "B" mix

28. Zone Clear
29. Speed Up!!
30. Invincible!!
31. Game Over
32. Special Stage
33. Little Planet

5) Almost there! Open up Gens. If you try to load Sonic CD, you'll notice it complains about the BIOS files. What to do? Head over to Option -> Bios/Misc Files and you'll see a dialog for Sega CD bioses, with different countries. Hit Change and find the BIOSes you downloaded; you only need it for the country version you downloaded, but it doesn't hurt to set them all. The difference is that only the American BIOS calls it Sega CD instead of Mega CD and the European version is 50fps instead of 60 (which is why I said to download American or Japanese earlier). You may also want to hit Option -> Joypads to see what the input settings are as well.

6) Now if you try to load Sonic CD, it seems to work, but hit Start and it'll complain about RAM. Reboot (Tab) and hit A instead, and it'll take you to the CD player. Find Option and hit A again; it'll show you statistics and then take you to memory controls. Format the RAM and restart again. The game now should be fully working. Have fun! :)

News and Updates / Sega to develop for PSP and Nintendo DS
« on: February 09, 2004, 04:35:10 pm »
According to a report in Japan's Nikkei Industrial News, publisher and developer Sega is onboard to create software for Nintendo DS, a dual-screened portable set for release later this year by Nintendo. Sega's president Hisao Oguchi also confirmed that the company is ready to make software for Sony's forthcoming PlayStation Portable (PSP) system.

Not that it's entirely unexpected, given that they've released something for every platform being sold in the US today.

Wikkity! / IM convo with Rolken and Green Hill.
« on: February 07, 2004, 12:29:44 am »
So this guy had been disallowed from posting times on the main site without proof since the site began because he lied repeatedly on GameFAQs. read on~

(22:07:40) Green Hill: :P
(22:07:51) Rolken137: sup
(22:08:02) Green Hill: :P :P
(22:08:19) Rolken137: :o!
(22:08:29) Green Hill: CRAZY GADGET
(22:09:57) Green Hill: sigh
(22:10:52) Green Hill: ?????

(referring to a time he'd submitted without proof, against repeated explicit instruction - I had deleted it and prevented his account from accessing the submission screen a few days ago)

(22:11:20) Rolken137: no proof
(22:11:41) Rolken137: believe it or not, you're still banned from submissions until the community deems otherwise
(22:12:21) Green Hill: that would be forever
(22:12:34) Rolken137: then so be it
(22:12:59) Green Hill: *swears like hell*
(22:13:45) Green Hill: im bored
(22:14:01) Green Hill: oh btw
(22:14:07) Green Hill: do u have hosting yet
(22:14:18) Rolken137: well, the site's up...
(22:14:24) Green Hill: ?
(22:14:34) Rolken137: what do you mean?
(22:15:03) Green Hill: hosting like on parashift
(22:15:09) Green Hill: do i get a web account

(I had given him email and webspace on the old server, in spite of the trouble he causes me)

(22:15:16) Rolken137: oh, I'm not dealing with it at the moment

(I sign onto TSC and notice that he's reregistered twice and started submitting more times)

(22:15:32) Rolken137: okay, sir, you are pissing me off
(22:15:42) Rolken137: ban evasion is disallowed
(22:15:54) Green Hill: whats ban envasion
(22:16:08) Rolken137: I disallowed you from submitting
(22:16:10) Rolken137: you registered again
(22:16:16) Rolken137: do I have to ban your IP?
(22:16:31) Green Hill: cause no one would change my user name to Green Hill
(22:16:45) Green Hill: and the i submitted a time for sky rail cause i have a pic
(22:16:56) Rolken137: you are banned from automatic submissions

(this isn't new, but I guess some things just don't sink in the first ...second... third time around)

(22:16:57) Rolken137: BANNED
(22:16:59) Rolken137: IS THAT CLEAR?
(22:17:13) Green Hill: nope
(22:17:24) Rolken137: then you are banned from submissions with proof as well.
(22:17:41) Green Hill: heh whatever u think i have the record

Man, two bans in one day (though Green Hill's not banned from the forum). I feel like a Nazi. Anyone else, if you want to get banned, antagonizing me repeatedly over AIM or email and disregarding repeated instructions is a good way to do it. :/

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Investigators from the Australian recording industry raided the Sydney offices of Internet file-swapping network Kazaa on Friday in search of evidence to support allegations of copyright infringements.

I bet they had lawyers digging around for a law that would let them do that for ages.

Wikkity! / itt Rolken lays down the rules
« on: February 06, 2004, 01:03:13 pm »
Okay, more like guidelines, but close enough.

1) You can say whatever you want, pretty much.

2) If your name is Paul Corby, don't post.

3) Take another look at rule 2 just to make sure.

4) If you're pressing Submit on the third one-liner in a row, you might want to stop and think about the quality of what you're posting.

5) If you're having problems with flood control, see rule 4.

6) If your sigs are longer than your posts, see rule 4.

7) Be nice.

8) If you're having problems with rule 7, don't expect people to like you.

9) Don't quote anything you're not responding to. We've already read it once.

10) Colored text is pointless and annoying and screams "noob! restrain me!"

11) The photo option is for photos. That is why it is described as such. Use it appropriately, please.

carry on
