I give my S3K spot to HDL as previously stated. I'll try and get in touch with SonicBoom this weekend.

EDIT: Did SB default S2 to me? I haven't seen or heard anything about it though

What's the most unfair death you've ever encountered in a game?

I don't really like many of the Sonic meme's since they're mostly pretty stupid. I like most speedrunning related quotes from Sonic 06 though, the voice acting combined with the limited library of clips is hilariously bad. IT'S NO USE!

(hypothetical) What should be SEGA's focus for a new genre for Sonic? So far we've got platformer, puzzle, RPG, racing, fighting.... Perhaps a Sonic FPS, MMO, RTS or why not a point & click? And why ;)?

If it's a game that records your times, expect that you might be called out for it. In that case a photo would suffice, but it has to be the exact same time as you submitted, not a close or even better one.

This to avoid people that submit stats of what they think they *might* get if they really tried. Only submit stats you actually got.

Once you're an established and trusted runner you probably don't have to pay as much attention to it though, just get into the community and you'll be fine

I think it's a close race. They both have great and mediocre tracks. Personally I'd have a mix of them both ;_;. But if I had to choose it'd be JP with Stardust Speedway being the deciding track that make me favour it.

Should I buy Sonic Generations 3DS?

There's more stats being submitted than posts on the forum though SB. People who usually submit might not have voiced their opinions, and people who don't visit the forums might not bother to get proper proof for every single submission either.

I'm pro-trial though

Personally I'd get more motivation to compete if a video was required for the top places. Especially if I'd watch it and be like "I can beat that".

I agree with Parax that there should be less speculation whether there would be less competition or not. Obviously we should have a vote about it.

« on: February 21, 2013, 10:24:05 am »
I can't search for "Sonic 2" on the forums because it doesn't allow for single-character "words". This means that I can't effectively search for "Using Tails in Sonic 2 time trials" or similar. Which is a shame because I kind of wanted to know if using him is okay since it isn't stated in the rules.

Perhaps an exception to that rule could be made for numbers 0-9?

So not a lot has been going on in this topic but it seems like animal protection has the lead. Perhaps we should start on deciding which charity to support. I was looking around for animal protection that do global work.

Here's two links I checked out:

Beef / Re: The direction of TSC

I really like the idea of proof. Off the top of my head I think this could be some general guidelines:
- If you use an emulator, video is required.
- If you play on console, photo of the TV-screen is sufficient
- Top 3 / site record TA-stats requires video
- For ring-attacks/scores, a general route/method description is required if only a photo is provided (?)

1. because there's absolutely no reason not to record a video of an emulator run if you're so serious about IL's that you want to get to the top percentile

2. Because it's harder to both TAS or Gameshark and record on console. Doesn't help against e.g. S&K debug mode but idk how to handle that

3. Because there's few things so heart-breaking than trying to beat a hard-to-beat time with no recorded strats or comments anywhere on the web. Possibly this could be implemented after the game has 10-20+ competitors in order to not discourage competition to spark and also fuel it after it's on.

4. Doesn't have to be extensive, but might discourage people from just looking at the charts, enter debug mode (on genesis) and place the same amount of rings and just take a photo of the goal. To prevent from people to BS at least without doing their research first.

Now that I think about it, I don't actually remember what triggers the position values to spawn or despawn in debug mode on genesis so it might be less of a problem than I think it is :p. At least to random 13-y.o. who just troll the boards.

As for version differences. If I understand Parax's suggestion correctly it's something similar in implementation to the ZSR leaderboards, which I give a big thumbs up to.

If you don't know what I'm referencing:
http://zeldaspeedruns.com/leaderboards/oot/any

BTW, are we going to embed the videos or only allow links?

I'm pro-twitter for TSC too.

Marathon Planning / Re: Schedule (Third Draft)
« on: February 19, 2013, 07:47:10 pm »
Saturday cannot change, as the multiplayer games involve getting several people together in one location and I need a weekend to do that. Friday night is also set to an audience participation event for the sake of having the largest possible audience playing.

If there's anything you really want done on a weekend, consider doing it as a bonus stream on Friday night, Saturday night, or anytime Sunday. In your case, that would be something like "if somebody else does Sonic 2/3&K, I'll do it as a different character." I can't force you, of course, but it's a suggestion to go along with your suggestion.

I can understand Saturday, but I still think it's odd that Friday is "8-bit sonic day" while those are some of the less popular (even unknown) games in the series (no offence to anyone running them ofc).

It should probably be possible to do something during the bonus, sure. But I don't really want to contemplate about that right now as the schedule is still being worked on.

Anything viral, so basically pop music. Otherwise I'd say rap or techno mainly because rap usually focus on the lyrics or techno because it has a lot of amateurs that produce repetitive songs. Hard question...

My question is:
How many 5-year olds could you win against in a fight?

Marathon Planning / Re: Schedule (Third Draft)
« on: February 19, 2013, 05:19:27 am »
When you talk to people about Sonic the Hedgehog, they usually don't think about Sonic Riders or Sonic Chaos. They think about Sonic 1 or 2, Sonic Generations, Sonic Adventure 2 or sometimes Sonic 06.

I think it'd be a better idea to have the most popular games during friday/saturday rather than to burn them during the workdays.

I'll make myself available as long as the date is announced a good while in beforehand. The only potential problem would be work but I could be free the whole weekend after/before that.

I sign up for Sonic 2 as Sonic & Tails (Don't know Knuckles, although I guess it's not all that terrible to learn if it's absolutely necessary)

Sonic 3 & Knuckles. You could probably make it an incentive for Sonic/Tails, glitchless or any% and potentially 100%. If I'm sonic I'd like to run on an 8 emerald file so you get the final stage too though. The problem with this is that it's a lot of categories to potentially focus on so I'd rather have 1 incentive for [Sonic/Tails], [Sonic or Tails Glichless/any%] or [Sonic 100%/any%] and for it to be decided as soons as possible.

EDIT: I talked to HDL and he was interested in joining so if he does I can forfeit the Sonic 3 spot for him. He's probably the best Tails and Knuckles runner around.

As for now, the closest you're gonna get is congratsio.com. It is a general problem keeping track of WR's in the community though and it's mostly solved by the players themselves seeking contact with eachother.

Marathon Planning / Re: Charity Choice
« on: January 20, 2013, 05:20:07 pm »
I really like the animal protection idea. I think it's something that is completely related to the Sonic franchise and also something that I can understand might be harder to get donations for. Just the other day I read about African Lions declining rapidly with only a handful of strong populations. Primates, other mammals and all kinds of fish and sharks are all on the decline. Therefore some form of wildlife protection fund would be a good choice imo. A non-profit charity aiming towards protecting wildlife and/or rainforests.

News and Updates / Re: Marathon 2013 -- For Real This Time
« on: January 15, 2013, 03:00:28 pm »
Thorn, my main concern about the choice of charity was that there might be better causes to donate for. Child's play is a legit charity but first of all there's already a lot of marathons that donate to them and secondly, there might be other places where money is needed more. SDA is pretty niche with PCF and I think they're better off for it, escpecially considering how many have been affected by cancer specifically. Therefore I'd be open to other suggestions since I wouldn't want to choose CP just so we can raise money for -something-. Something like cancer research is global and timeless while entertainment for hospitalised kids, 90% of them in the USA (and the rest still in privileged parts of the world), is more of an government and parental issue and also affected by wear. But that's just my 2 cents and if the community agrees then I'm of course up for it.

Regarding the marathon itself, I definitely see quality being the priority. Considering the competition levels of games like Sonic 2, SA2 and Generations, there definitely should be a high standard for the games played given that people sign up for it (which I'm sure won't be much of a problem). But then there's mid-level games like Advance 3, Secret Rings or even Ristar and low-level ones like everyones favourite Tails Skypatrol. The quality should definitely be as high as possible but with considerations for games that are on the schedule because of popularity, curiosity and comedy accordingly. A "community choice" of a hacked game might be cool too like co-op Robo Blast 2 or something.

Personally I think the marathon should be split into parts. Perhaps there could be 2D and 3D days to reflect the races we hold and if we feel pressed for time I don't really see the problem with having different categories in the same game being run as long as there's enough of a difference such as Sonic 100% glitchless vs Knuckles any% in Sonic 3 or Hero/Dark story in SA2 but not Sonic vs Knuckles in Sonic 2. Something like a mega-race where as many people involved possible race a single game, perhaps Sonic 1 might be a consideration, just like the SMW race in the SMW marathon.

If you want I could do Sonic 2 and/or 3, but I'd want to know the category a good while before the marathon for practise in that case. But I feel that planning and signing up should be in split threads to make things less clutty.

General Sonic / Re: Sonic Fan Film
« on: January 15, 2013, 01:41:37 pm »
I don't really see why people complain... I thought it was completely on par with a lot of what Sega have been spitting out the last 10 years, at least quality wise ;p.

I did feel it was like a bad first season of Stargate SG1 episode with a forced sonic thrown in however. Also, design choices aside, all the animations felt awkward and all action camera-angles felt poor. Sonics dialogue was too much of "hurr durr I'm so cool" and I could barely follow the story because too much was left to the imagination.

General Sonic / Re: Does any here stream high level sonic play?
« on: January 13, 2013, 08:36:38 am »
I stream a bunch of Sonic 2 & 3 @ twitch.tv/primat91. Then you got twitch.tv/iHDL who is amazing at Sonic 3, twitch.tv/mike89sda who usually plays coop Sonic 3 with his brother Werster, twitch.tv/footbigmike who usually plays Sonic CD when he doesn't play Zelda and finally twitch.tv/teentee314 who very rarely goes for WR attempts at Sonic 1 but is still amazing at it.

I think twitch.tv/naegleria might stream Sonic 1 once in a while but I haven't seen him do that for ages and also twitch.tv/adam_ak sometimes streams the game gear games

Really what you should do if you want to see who might be a good streamer at a game you could go to the gamepage on SRL and then check the top ranked ones, then go to their profile and check their stream link, like this for example: http://speedrunslive.com/gamelist/#!/sonic3/1

I like the idea of a DS game race. I don't know about being the one to put my foot down and making anything "official" but I do realise something should be decided. How about I post a poll with all the suggestions about 2-3 hours before the time the scheduled race usually would start tomorrow to decide tomorrows race?

TSC Race Night / January "week off" races
« on: January 04, 2013, 01:33:09 pm »
January 5th and 12th is the week off for race night, but that doesn't mean we can't get something to race anyways!

So I made this topic where you can post whether you want to do an unofficial race night and what to play, kind of like how Hyper and some other did with Sonic 2 a while ago.

So I'm available at the usual time. PM or post here if you're up for:
Sonic 2
Sonic 3 (& Knuckles)
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2

Also, since it's unofficial, we could do something that probably wouldn't be raced otherwise, like Sonic 3 alone or All Sonic/Shadow stages in SA2B for example.

Cheers
