News and Updates / Emerald Challenges Opens its Doors to a New Format
« on: June 15, 2011, 10:01:06 pm »
After many discussions with fans who haven't been able to compete in Emerald Challenges (be that reason no home PC like Romulo, or because you don't use Windows and can't run Gens+), I've taken into consideration a different form of submission which many users have suggested, and I have come to a decision:

From now on, YouTube embeds or links will now be accepted as well as .giz videos in the Emerald Challenges threads. This will soon be edited into the Emerald Challenge Ground Rules. You will be expected to place a watermark in your video that has your TSC username on it.

EDIT: Nevermind. Just do what Romulo did and make sure there's something we can use in the video link to ensure that it's you. (He spoke in his video, saying something like making the impossible possible.)

Rules Revisions / Sonic & Knuckles: Doomsday Rings Chart
« on: June 07, 2011, 01:23:00 am »
The poll topic pretty much says it. Here's the idea: It's impossible to max the ring counter within the time limit, despite the fact that rings respawn.

Relevant opinions and meaningful thoughts appreciated.

Chaos Emeralds / Cyan Chaos Emerald Challenge
« on: May 31, 2011, 08:52:24 pm »
This it it, folks! The final Chaos Emerald release before the Super Emerald series begins, with a brand-new design concept!

This last color is known for being the hardest. It's theme is Endeavor, which removes a critical tool or ability while you complete the level without it.

Show your will to persist, get creative, and find a way to the top, and you'll retrieve the emerald dangling in the skies!

Cyan Chaos Emerald Challenge: As Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, complete Sonic's version of Sky Sanctuary Zone without using more than 1 teleport orb, that orb being the one that takes you to the last boss in the level.

Screenwrapping is not allowed. (I knew I forgot something.)

Note: Debug Mode Code is required to access this level, but use of debug mode in the challenge is not allowed. To avoid this result, do not hold any buttons as you select this level.

Chaos Emeralds / White Chaos Emerald Challenge
« on: May 25, 2011, 07:21:37 pm »
I was so excited about this color that I had to release it a little sooner than expected. I'm going to get to the point very quickly here because I want you to try it and see what you think.

As many of you know, White's theme is Grace, and it involves some kind of extreme platforming. This one's going to put your tiptoeing skills to the test, as you'll face a boss fight so delicate, that one false move can cost you the entire run. Watch your moves carefully, and you'll come out of the fight with a new emerald. Good luck!

White Chaos Emerald Challenge: In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, go to Wing Fortress Zone and engage in the boss fight. You must be off the floor from the moment the first laser beam is fired until you destroy the boss. If you touch the ground anytime in between, your run is invalid.

You may begin your recording from anytime before the boss music begins.
The challenge is complete when the last hit is delivered. You may stop recording then.
Knuckles is not allowed.
Slope Glitch is not allowed (blame werster for this edit).

Chaos Emeralds / Pink Chaos Emerald Challenge
« on: May 24, 2011, 12:27:15 am »
Ready or not, here comes Emerald Challenge #5!

It's been a while since I've made you suffer. In fact I haven't heard complaints since the Blue challenge. Time for me to step it up a bit. I saved the toughest colors for last!

Pink's theme, Defense, has always been the bane of several experts on this site. Novices may find these type challenges easier as they are often caught in survival scenarios, whereas the Time and Score attackers native to this site find themselves struggling. The reversal of fortune that this theme brings is nothing short of comical.

Even with this Chaos-level challenge, I intend to uphold that tradition, with a challenge that looks ridiculously easy at first glance, yet will force you to struggle until you learn the necessary steps to shield yourself and the AI partner to the bitter end. By the way, emphasis on "bitter end." You'll know what I mean when you try it.

Pink Chaos Emerald Challenge: As Sonic and Tails together in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, complete Angel Island Zone, Act 2 without either character incurring damage.

If either character incurs damage or if Tails is seen flying or swimming (especially to return to where Sonic is), the run is invalid.
Damage is defined by being put in a blinking state, and/or dying.
Tails may not be human-controlled.
The challenge is complete when the capsule at the end of the stage is opened. You may stop recording then.

Chaos Emeralds / Red Chaos Emerald Challenge
« on: May 20, 2011, 12:25:07 pm »
Thanks to the boon of new participants and incoming help from Judges, especially Flying Fox and werster, I'm now able to release the next installment again!

Also, deadlines for emerald challenges have been lifted, so don't worry if you haven't been up to date in completing them.

The color I'm releasing now is Red, and it's theme is Offense. It often involves destroying things.

If you work quickly and get aggressive, you can be done with this fight in as quickly as two or three cycles. Play it safe, and you might be taking a long time.

Red Chaos Emerald Challenge: In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, destroy the boss in Carnival Night Zone, Act 2. Knuckles is the only allowed character.

Wheel Glitch is not allowed.

You may start your recording from anytime before the boss music begins.

Emerald Challenges / Now Recruiting: Judges
« on: May 18, 2011, 01:07:54 pm »
As you all know, the new season of Emerald Challenges has had a strong response in submissions.

To help lighten the load on FF and myself, I'd like to have an additional 1 or 2 judges to help watch and review submissions. If you're interested, find me on Skype -- alias SpinDashMaster, and I'll get you set up.

If I can get enough help, I'll even consider removing the deadlines policy!

Chaos Emeralds / Green Chaos Emerald Challenge
« on: May 17, 2011, 05:19:26 am »
Here's the other half of the dual release:

Green is a test of Speed, and in general involves a time attack.

Green Chaos Emerald Challenge: In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, complete Aquatic Ruin Zone, Act 1 in 27 seconds or less. If the clock strikes :28, the run is invalid.

You may use any character.

Chaos Emeralds / Yellow Chaos Emerald Challenge
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:19:42 am »
:O

Surprised by the early release? I felt since the crowd has enjoyed the first taste of emeralds 2011 that I'd keep the hot cakes rolling. Today's a dual release day: Keep your eyes peeled for Green Chaos as well.

Yellow, as you know if you're a veteran to the Emerald Challenges, is a test of Observance, and it involves a simple ring attack that has gone unnoticed.

As long as you pay attention to details, this ring attack is easy. If you overlook something by taking it too lightly, especially by speeding, you may find yourself as off by as much as 20 rings or as few as even 1 ring.

Yellow Chaos Emerald Challenge: In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, complete Hydrocity Zone, Act 2 with at least 418 Rings in hand at the time you complete it. Sonic is the only allowed character.

Chaos Emeralds / Blue Chaos Emerald Challenge
« on: May 13, 2011, 07:54:13 pm »
No, I didn't give you a forward announcement.
No, I didn't start with green this time.
No, this challenge isn't as easy as my usual chaoses, but it's still easy by TSC standards.

This season, things are changing. Every challenge I offer to you will be brand new. No recycles.
To those of you who are new to Sonic gameplay, you've come to the right place. This set of challenges is designed to get you accustomed to the standards of difficulty at TSC. This means I'll be breaching an old rule of mine: glitches will be allowed at your disposal, and sometimes they'll be outright necessary!

I have a new assistant on staff: Flying Fox. She and I will be here consistently to award your emeralds. However, I will only keep one challenge color open each week. So, you'll have to make the cut and earn the emerald before I release the next challenge. This should help to cut down on our workload.

If you have any questions, post them on the Emerald Challenge forum, and we'll get it answered ASAP.

Make sure you read the Emerald Challenge Ground Rules before you submit.

Enough blabber already... let's get to the challenge!

I'm changing the color order up to keep things fresh. That, and I accidentally started with the concept design using blue instead of green. So we're starting with blue until I get Green composed. Complaints for that can go to Thorn.

For those of you who don't know: Blue's theme, Calmness, is designed for keeping our competitors calm under pressure. It "usually" takes them underwater for that reason. Once again this is no exception. I've taken what would otherwise be a challenge worthy of being a 2006 "Master Emerald", but included a clause that you will easily understand and take advantage of if you take enough time to think about it. Have fun, and good luck!

Blue Chaos Emerald Challenge: In Sonic the Hedgehog, complete all of Labyrinth Zone in a single recording, without breathing an air bubble. You may die up to two times in your run. A third death makes the run invalid.

Rules Revisions / Carnival Night 2 Tails Roof Route Deemed Valid.
« on: April 27, 2011, 07:58:17 pm »
Until further notice this strategy is banned. I'm the only person affected by this ruling (I think), but if you followed my path I'm asking you to remove your stat.

werster has recently proven that this path is impossible on console due to a wall above the upper boundary. If anyone can prove otherwise I'll re-allow it.

Hey guys. Normally I'd talk through chat, but Mibbit isn't compatible with my Blackberry's browser. If there's an app for that hook me up.

I'm currently en route to Tampa, FL for spring break. If anyone from TSC hails there, maybe I can pay a visit. :D

I have a few qualms about your stats in S1, and so does half the chatroom:

1) On February 5, 2011, you submitted a time sheet for S1, several stats of which tied #1 records. Less than 2 hours later, you update the entire sheet with improvements to non-record times ranging from "1 sec" to "30 secs."

How is it even humanly possible to play the entire game through and improve all those routes in that little time?

2) Yesterday you've done virtually the same thing with rings. But two stats of note are your Scrap Brain 3 and Star Light 3 rings; they have not only a unique strategy but a delicate requirement to tie: neither of which you have.

Some proof of your blazing-fast posting would be appreciated, otherwise b&.

News and Updates / Major Competition Rules Update
« on: February 05, 2011, 05:28:55 pm »
After many months of chat discussion, forum thread killing, and filibusters by AFK people, there has been a consensus reached in our new stance towards emulation in competition. The way the rule is written now, there is virtually no restriction on emulator usage so long as everything you do on the emulator equals everything you can do on the original console. That said, this is a vague description of the new rule, and you should read it for yourself in the updated competition rules before you submit.

This rule does not void any previously submitted stats, so there is no need to check anything you've previously submitted with an emulator.

On a side note, there was also a minor revision regarding Heroes team battles that is retroactive, so if you have a stat there, please check the current ruling and see if your stat is void.

If anyone has questions, comments, complaints, or bricks, post them here and try to get somebody to care.

Rules Revisions / Emulation
« on: December 28, 2010, 12:58:48 pm »
Recently, DS Emulation has been allowed, despite some players unable to run any DS emulator to 60 FPS speed.

Note that you may not use an emulator to compete if that emulator can't run at 60 FPS; due to such usage being considered slowdown.

To simplify this rule that seems to need constant updates, I propose a simpler, more consistent emulation rule that I think many of us can agree on. Post your thoughts after reading, whether you support or oppose the rule change. A poll has also been included if you wish to keep your stand anonymous.

Rule proposed to be removed:

* Unofficial emulators that do not replicate correctly the original gameplay are not allowed. This currently spans PSP, Dreamcast and any newer non portable consoles, and more.

New rule proposed:

* You may use any emulator for competition under two conditions: the original gameplay is preserved and unmodified, and your copy of the emulator performs at full speed (60 FPS in general).

Competition Central / Sonic 2 VS Mini-tournament
« on: December 24, 2010, 03:13:50 am »
So yeah, we were on IRC and decided to have a 4 man tourney:

Here are the results:

First file is round 1: SDM(Sonic) vs. werster(Tails). SDM won.

Second file is finals: SDM(Sonic) vs. flyby(Tails). SDM won.

Ask SB if he has the match against flyby >_>

News and Updates / Colors Charts Have Arrived
« on: November 29, 2010, 03:15:02 pm »
Okay peeps, you now have before yourselves two brand-new charts for competition: Sonic Colors Wii and Sonic Colors DS. Thorn & GerbilSoft did the Wii charts and I handled the DS version. They're both ready to roll. Cheers.

I'd have edited Thorn's post but I can't for some reason. At any rate, it should deaden the forum activity since the main focus has now shifted to submitting on the site versus submitting and speculating on the forum.

Try to have fun, and don't poke anybody.

News and Updates / ITT SDM Takes Over TSC
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:42:16 pm »
Just kidding. But I did use my old admin powers here to add the S4 charts. So go ahead and feel free to submit, but please be aware of the 4 rules of Sonic 4 added to the Comp. Rules before you do so.

Happy Competing!

BTW, /ignore CodeGirl is a handy IRC command right about now.

Rules Revisions / Launch Base 2 Sonic Rings/Scores: Early Timestop
« on: October 10, 2010, 11:07:41 pm »
I'm gonna let the .giz file do the talking for me in terms of description, while merely highlighting the pigeonhole in the rules.

Stopping the timer using the LB2 Boss is banned in Times, but not rings or scores. The question is, since nothing is provably infinite here, should it be?

Things to note:

  • Time stops early in LB2. This allows infinite time for ring attacking, as long as you know what you're doing and don't pop Sonic's only air source.
  • Slope glitch is used here, but that's already allowed. See: Launch Base 2 Knuckles/Tails, Ice Cap 1 Sonic/Tails/Knuckles.
  • There are two level clear screens that claim "Sonic Got Through Act 2," and both tabulate a ring and time bonus. Both are large quantities, albeit finite.

Beef / So, erm, I came to say hi, only to find myself pwnt by IRC
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:58:15 pm »
I have tried to logon to surrealchat via kvirc and mibbit;both give me the message saying that my IP address is banned with the message: (sonicandamy: You seriously need to grow up).

This has me puzzled. Had someone been doing shit as me? Because I haven't touched the sonic community in over two months.

Beef / I broke the new game charts, again.
« on: March 15, 2009, 05:28:07 pm »
Well, SBK chart making was going ok until it came time to link. I need to have this explained better than the way Rolken wrote it, because I followed his algorithm and I clearly botched something up.

GerbilSoft, help plz.

EDIT: Looks like only the overalls and submissions to Extra are botched.

Leaderboard Disputes / ATTN: sonic star
« on: February 28, 2009, 09:51:42 am »
Three stats cause trouble for me (there may be more I haven't seen yet):

New Record: sonic star got 119878 on Rush / Scores / Dead Line 1 (Blaze)
New Record: sonic star got 0:23:96 on Rush / Bosses / Night Carnival Boss (Sonic)
New Record: sonic star got 0:24:11 on Rush / Bosses / Night Carnival Boss (Blaze)

There are methods you have to know before you can even attempt any of these stats. Would you care to explain before I disprove these stats are even possible?

EDIT: one other thing: if you remember, what was your "speed bonus" for Dead Line 1 Blaze?

Leaderboard Disputes / Pre-BS-calling measure [resolved]
« on: November 23, 2008, 05:33:45 pm »
LR1 S just went to over 450,000. Tails and Knuckles can do it too.

I don't want to hear anyone calling BS. This is justified and based on the fact that you all are aware of the robots respawning and yet have made no rulings.

Therefore, I roll combo'd on one and spammed up to an arbitrary amount of points.

If you want to remove the stat, you'll have to add a rule banning killing the same robot twice, or else ban LR1 score.

EDIT: Resolved.

Beef / Please Add Rules for IC1 T/K Scores/Rings
« on: November 10, 2008, 02:29:47 pm »
Ok, this sat for another year on the backburner and I'm getting a little mad >:o

You guys need to do one of two things:

1. Add this Rule to Rings and Score Divisions of Sonic 3:

In Icecap 1, you may not pass over Sonic's boss, but you may pass under it.

2. Allow me to post my much higher (and controversial, yet unbanned currently [I have a .giz of the abuse that ensues]) Ring/Score stats for IC1 K (Which I will push to 999 Rings/150,000-ish points if need be).

EDIT: GS Fixed it for me.

Rules Revisions / Sonic 3: Icecap 1 Tails/Knuckles Charts Reinstated.
« on: July 05, 2008, 04:43:59 pm »
Just in case the Rules committe post wasn't loud enough:

Icecap 1 Tails/Knuckles rings are now re-instated, with exception to the fact that you may not go over Sonic's boss in S3K.

Videos explaining these actions were requested, and I have them posted here for viewing/editing.

Obligatory post because SM needs to take these and turn them into something.

Anyone else who wants to watch can. IC1 Tails and knuckles rings and scores are now allowed, but these particular actions are not.

Works with Gens. Does the old kaillera 0.9 features + souped up a bit. Also, a peer-to-peer mode which has very very smooth gameplay!

(I was playing a guy in japan with this the other day, worked quite beautifully!)
