Reviving the idea of M&S charts
« on: August 27, 2012, 10:11:56 am »
A while back, I started to add the required stat types for the M&S games (centiscore, milliscore), but never got around to finishing it.

After playing M&S Winter Olympics in the TSC Marathon this year, I decided that it might be worthwhile to revisit this idea and add charts for everything. So, today I'm going to finish implementing the new stat types.

Which leads to another issue: Charts. What events should and shouldn't be tracked, and what stats do they use?

If anyone has ideas for charts for the three M&S games, post them here. (I don't have the (3)DS games, so someone else will have to manage those.)

I believe that we should use times and scores that are like 9.435. Any other event should not be included. I can try to help with the DS games, but since school has started, I don't have a ton of free time.

Kay, I finished the event list and their measurements for 20123DS. I just have to put them somewhere. Any ideas?

Well, here you go GerbilSoft:

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games DS

Athletics (tracked):
  • 100m (millisecond)
  • 400m (millisecond)
  • 400m Hurdles (millisecond)
  • Long Jump (millimeter)
  • Triple Jump (millimeter)
  • Javelin Throw (millimeter)
  • Hammer Throw (millimeter)

Aquatics (tracked):
  • 100m Freestyle (millisecond)
  • 10m Platform (centiscore)

Gymnastics (tracked):
  • Trampoline (centiscore)
  • Vault (milliscore)

Dream Events (tracked):
  • Dream Race (millisecond)
  • Dream Basketball (score)
  • Dream Shooting (score)
  • Dream Long Jump (centimeter)

Dream Events (not tracked):
  • Dream Boxing (we could possibly do (time left over from round 1) + (time left over from round 2)) (second)
  • Dream Canoe (coins)
  • Dream Table Tennis (we could maybe do 100 (win score for both matches) minus total opponent's score (from both matches). So the max would be 100) (score)
  • Dream Fencing (we could do time left over from both rounds like boxing) (second)

Other Events (tracked)
  • Archery (score)
  • Shooting (score)
  • Cycling (millisecond)

Other Events (not tracked)
  • Table Tennis (like Dream Table Tennis we could do 20 (win score for both matches) minus total opponent's score (from both matches). So the max would be 20) (score)
  • Fencing (we could do (time left over in match 1) + (time left over in match 2)) (second)

Gallery Games
  • Replay (LV1-LV5) (score)
  • Shoot! (LV1-LV5) (score)
  • Matching (LV1-LV5) (score)
  • Airship (LV1-LV5) (score)
  • Conveyor Belt (LV1-LV5) (score)

By (LV1-LV5) I mean levels 1-5, so there's 25 gallery game levels in total (just to make that clear). Also, below are the circuits for reference, if you decide to include them (the scores are untracked):

Circuits (Beginner's Class)
  • Mercury Circuit (score)
  • Venus Circuit (score)
  • Jupiter Circuit (score)
  • Saturn Circuit (score)
  • Moonlight Circuit (score)

Circuits (Advanced Class)
  • Stardust Circuit (score)
  • Planet Circuit (score)
  • Comet Circuit (score)
  • Satellite Circuit (score)
  • Sunlight Circuit (score)

Circuits (Master's Class)
  • Meteorite Circuit (score)
  • Supernova Circuit (score)
  • Cosmos Circuit (score)
  • Galaxy Circuit (score)
  • Universal Circuit (score)
  • Big Bang Circuit (score)

Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,
Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait...
Below are the missions. Some are fit for competition, some aren't. I've listed them all for reference nonetheless. Also, mission stats aren't tracked. However I do still recommend we include the missions that can be competed in in the competition, as they would be quite fun to compete in.

Missions (Knuckles)
  • Hammer Throw (throw three times, increasing your distance each time - we could rank the longest throw) (millimeter)
  • 400m (millisecond)
  • 10m Platform (centiscore)
  • Table Tennis (score - refer to the Table Tennis event)
  • Dream Basketball (perform 1 combo within 30 seconds - we could rank time left over) (millisecond)
  • Dream Boxing (second (time left over))

Missions (Bowser)
  • Fencing (parry 5 opponent attacks and win - we could do time left over) (second)
  • Hammer Throw (millimeter (total of all three throws))
  • 400m (millisecond)
  • Archery (score)
  • Dream Table Tennis (earn at least 20 points in a single rally - I suppose we could rank most points here) (score)
  • Dream Fencing (second (refer to event))

Missions (Vector)
  • 100m Freestyle (millisecond)
  • Hammer Throw (millimeter)
  • Trampoline (centiscore)
  • Fencing (second)
  • Dream Canoe (millisecond)
  • Dream Table Tennis (score)

Missions (Wario)
  • 100m (millisecond)
  • 100m Freestyle (millisecond)
  • Shooting (hit 2 targets at the same time twice- this mission is n/a for competition)
  • Dream Long Jump (pass through 10 rings- this can't be competed in either!)
  • Dream Race (millisecond)
  • Cycling (millisecond)

Missions (Mario)
  • Long Jump (millimeter - total of three jumps)
  • Vault (milliscore)
  • Shooting (this mission 'shoot down all the red targets' is n/a for competition (there are four red targets, it would be pointless...)
  • Dream Long Jump (centimeter)
  • Dream Boxing (counter 5 times - we could do time left over) (second)
  • 100m (millisecond)

Missions (Amy)
  • Javelin Throw (millimeter)
  • Trampoline (centiscore)
  • Fencing (second)
  • Long Jump (millimeter)
  • Dream Long Jump (hit three opponents with items - as this event has no timer this mission is n/a for competition)
  • Dream Boxing (second)

Missions (Luigi)
  • 100m Freestyle (millisecond)
  • Triple Jump (millimeter)
  • Archery (hit black, red and blue rings in that specific order - I suppose we could do score)
  • Table Tennis (win five points using spin shots - I think this is n/a for competition, unless we do 5 (number of spin shots to win) minus rally's won by the opponent. So max would be 5)
  • Dream Basketball (score at least 15 points in 10 consecutive shots - we could rank total score)
  • Dream Race (millisecond)

Missions (Blaze)
  • Table Tennis (continue a rally for at least 10 hits - we could rank number of hits in the rally (higher = better))
  • Javelin Throw (throw 3 times, increasing your distance each time - we could rank longest throw (millimeter)
  • 10m Platform (perform a 20-step combo with command inputs - this is n/a for competition I think)
  • 100m (millisecond)
  • Dream Shooting (score)
  • Table Tennis (score)

Missions (Sonic)
  • 100m (millisecond)
  • Triple Jump (millimeter)
  • 400m Hurdles (millisecond)
  • Dream Boxing (perform a successful sway 9 times - we could rank time left over) (second)
  • Dream Fencing (knock your opponent out of the ring 3 times to win the match - again, we could rank time left over) (second)
  • 400m (millisecond)

Missions (Daisy)
  • 400m Hurdles (millisecond)
  • Trampoline (achieve seven GOOD ratings in your performance - this is n/a for competition I think - you either beat the mission with all 7 goods or not)
  • Triple Jump (achieve a GREAT rating in all three jumps - we could rank total distance of all three jumps) (millimeter)
  • Dream Table Tennis (successfully return three consecutive special shots - again, pointless...)
  • Dream Shooting (shoot down only the balloons marked with Daisy's flower symbol - you either get max points or you lose the mission, so this one is again pointless. There's no timer or anything on these n/a missions)
  • 100m Freestyle (millisecond)

Missions (Shadow)
  • 100m (millisecond)
  • Javelin Throw (throw 3 times in a row for a total of at least 220m - refer to Bowser's mission) (millimeter)
  • Cycling (collect all of the stamina - we could rank time) (millisecond)
  • Dream Fencing (second)
  • Dream Race (millisecond)
  • Dream Shooting (score)

Missions (Yoshi)
  • 10m Platform (enter the water feet-first! Aim for an entry angle of around 170 to 180 degrees - we could rank degrees (so 180 would be max)
  • Table Tennis (score)
  • Trampoline (enter 32 or more performance commands - we could rank number of followed performance commands)
  • Dream Basketball (make five consecutive successful shots - this would be pointless, you either get 5 points or lose the mission, everyone would be tied 1st)
  • Dream Canoe (gather 20 coins within 60 seconds - we could rank time left over) (second)
  • 400m Hurdles (millisecond)

Missions (Peach)
  • Vault (nail a perfect landing - no score or timer, n/a for competition)
  • Long Jump (millimeter)
  • 10m Platform (achieve a 10 combo chain or better - we could maybe rank number of combos in the chain)
  • Fencing (second)
  • Dream Shooting (achieve 10 consecutive hits - there is no score count or timer in this mission, so I think this is n/a for competition)
  • Dream Table Tennis (score)

Missions (Tails)
  • Shooting (don't miss even once - I think this is n/a for competition, as you either get max or lose)
  • Vault (don't make any mistakes on your four performance command inputs - no score or timer, so an n/a mission)
  • Trampoline (earn GOOD ratings 8 times in your performance - a max or lose mission again (as you have to input all commands to win), n/a)
  • Archery (hit the center of the target to earn 10 points under strong wind conditions - again, this is max or lose... fourth n/a mission in a row...)
  • Dream Race (millisecond)
  • Dream Canoe (coins)

Missions (Waluigi)
  • 400m Hurdles (millisecond)
  • Shooting (shoot all the blue targets only - a max or lose, n/a)
  • Vault (earn a 10.000 - max or lose, n/a)
  • Triple Jump (millimeter (total of all three jumps))
  • Dream Canoe (avoid your opponents' attacks for 30 seconds - n/a)
  • Dream Fencing (second)

Missions (Dr. Eggman)
  • Long Jump (millimeter)
  • 400m (millisecond)
  • Hammer Throw (perform a successfull yell 3 throws in a row - n/a)
  • Javelin Throw (millimeter)
  • Dream Basketball (score a basket - we could rank time left over (millisecond)
  • Cycling (millisecond)

Anyway, I think that's about it for this game. Tomorrow is my birthday (:D) but I will post the events and stat types for M&S10DS by the end of the week. I see you (GerbilSoft) own the three Wii M&S games, and darkstarblaze (DarkAura) will hopefully be helping with 2012(3DS) and the missions for M&S10DS. So I guess we're sorted for now.

EDIT: Scratched out the line about posting for M&S10DS, looks like it's already been done (less work for me :D). Anyway good luck with the charts.

DarkAura, I'm not trying to make you do anything, but it may be easier to look on the internet for a list of adventure tour missions (and maybe quickly look at some YouTube videos to see the stat types) for M&S'10DS. I just thought it might save you some time. Anyway it's awesome that you're helping out with this stuff. Also I'm 14 today :P

Majority of missions are done. Here are the stats for 3DS(Sorry of this is all over the place)

100m- 00:000 seconds
1500m- 0:00:000 minutes
20km Race Walk- 0:00:00:000 hours
110m Hurdles- 00:000 seconds
Long Jump- 0.000 meters
Triple Jump- 00.000 meters
Shot Put- 00.000 meters
Hammer Throw- 000.000 meters
Javelin Throw- 000.000 meters
100m Freestyle- 00:000 seconds
100m Backstroke- 0:00:000 minutes
100m Breastroke- 0:00:000 minutes
Badminton (Singles)- 000 points (I don't know if they can go that high..)
Floor- 00.000 points
Horizontal Bar- 00.000 points
Balance Beam- 00.000 points
Rings(not Sonic rings. That mistake only happened once)- 00.000 points
Trampoline- 00.000 points
BMX- 0:00:000 minutes
1000m Kayak (Singles)- 0:00:00:000 hours
Double Trap- 000 points
Modern Pentathlon- 0000 points
Triathlon- 0:00:00:000 hours

The missions for these are too repetitive. So I'll skip them. The ones for the Winter Olymics will be up over the weekend. You can bet my two Sonic 06 records for that.

Ugh, why did they have to throw in "hours"? I suppose these "events" are actually competed in while the system is in standby, sort of like Street Pass and whatnot.

Technically, they're the same as MILLITIME, but they need to use an h:mm format instead of just mm. I'm not sure if I need to add a completely new format for that (HMILLITIME?) or if I can just add a flag indicating "use hours/minutes instead of just minutes".

I will probably have initial charts for M&S'08 (Wii) put together this weekend, and since I'm creating the charts, this will be the first one set up on "The M&S Center".

Okay, but it still has to be handled as hours within TSC, so it's still a bit annoying :(

Regarding mission modes, I don't think we'll be tracking them for M&S '08. They appear to simply be "complete event X as character Y" with some restrictions, and otherwise aren't really interesting.

Ooh! Ooh! Do we have to do adventure tour missions? Honestly, they are like '08 missions with certain rules.  Can do the special challenge boards, since they are more challenging.

DS only. They are repetitive. I think they're much like '08 missions. Sorry if I sound like I'm chickening out of work. It's my honest opinion. Maybe the challenge missions shouldn't be in, because if you can pass them, your times are good.

Gerbilsoft, are these gonna be here, or the Mario Center? I'm curious, because I want to be leader for five minutes like Groudon is on Free Riders. Personally, I would like it here because it would bump up my rankings on the site, but oh wellz. Now, I'm going to fry my brain getting records tonight and tomorrow. You'll probably be #1 for a while, not too many people seem that interested in competing in these games, and I honestly don't know if I will ever pick up one of my M&S games again...

My question for these charts, is "Will there be enough competition to actually support having their charts?" I regret pushing for ASRDS because after 18 months on the site, there's 4 people on the charts, with barely any prominent activity (excluding stat dumps), and rarely gets submitted to. I tried to get competitive in the game when James_Bertolli came in with his sweep, but my interest in the game dwindled as it wasn't the hot thing anymore, nor was there enough incentive for me to play for it sitewide-wise. 2 years ago when i had drafted up Winter Olympics Charts (and summer Wii, which have mysteriously been edited away), i had massive intention to compete in that game regularly, possibly even 0p if i was actually good enough. And the appeal of that game may have been scarce, but it was there with some regular members. As of this post, it seems that not many, barring 3-4 perhaps, are interested in competing in this game. We don't even [seem to] have someone coherent in charts and rule design (sorry DarkAura, not a shot at you, but you don't seem entirely familiar with how charts are drafted, not that your enthusiasm isn't refreshing to see :P) for the 2012 Olympics games. Honestly, I'm not even sure I want to go out and buy this game, because the excitement of the London Olympics has passed, and I'm not even sure we'd get much competition to our charts, if they're made.

I won't complain if charts are made though (I may complain how they're made if i ever get my hands on the appropriate games, -if- they're charted improperly), I'm merely stating that it may just be something that is put onto the site, and seldom used. We seem to be lacking a little lately in submissions with games that aren't big console Sonic games though.

Here's my charts for M&S'08.
  • 100m: MILLITIME (without minutes)
  • 400m: MILLITIME
  • 4x100m Relay: MILLITIME

  • Dream Race: MILLITIME (not saved!)
  • Dream Platform: SCORE (not saved!)
*Skeet Shooting and Archery record both score and time. I'm not sure if time really matters for these events.

Looks like I'll need to add another stat format for MILLITIME without minutes for two events...

Fencing and table tennis are not trackable, nor are their dream event counterparts.

Circuit Mode is completing multiple events as a given character, o there's nothing to track here. Similarly, Mission Mode is completing specific events with a specified goal, so there's nothing to track here, either.

Gallery Games: These either have a fixed upper bound, or are endless and pointless. Not tracking these.

Unlike most of the regular games, TOTAL charts don't make any sense for M&S, since different scores have different weights. For example, the two gymnastics events are scored from 0.000 to 10.000, while Dream Platform can go over 9,000.
