Sonic and the Secret Rings Competition Info
« on: February 21, 2007, 11:57:41 pm »
Let me share some information probably vital to competition purposes about the game.

Firstly, there's seven stages plus a prologue chapter. At least, there's eight stages that I can see listed in the menu. So far I've got:

Lost Prologue
Sand Oasis
Dinosaur Jungle
Evil Foundry
Levitated Ruin
Pirate Storm
---
---

Each stage has a handful of missions, one of course being a boss stage, with the others varying as challenges. Some missions lead you across a smaller part of the stage, while some lead you through a completely different part of the stage, one not included in the original level.

Fastest time and High scores are saved, but not in the menus for some odd reason. You have to enter the stage, press the + button, and check status to view the high score/fastest time.

I don't know about the situation of ring attacking at the moment. They limited the amount of rings you can pick up as seen next to the ring count in any screenshot. However, it increases every 5 levels by about, as far as I can tell (you start the game able to pick up 50 rings at once). And that's levels as in Sonic's RPG type level, not level as in zone. They've also added a new ring - a silver one worth 20 rings.

Scores are very different compared to a conventional Sonic game. At the end of a stage, you are given four different bonuses:

Action Bonus - ???
Enemy Bonus - Enemies obviously
Ring Bonus - Runs off of rings obviously, but finishing with 10 rings seems to give 15 points
Technical Bonus - This is actually a multiplier. For example, if the other totals are 100, and the Technical bonus is 2, then the total score turns out to be 200.

Also note - all Lost Prologue missions are not scored, but times are.

*  Indicates tentative name.
Y Indicates we should have a division for it.
N Indicates we should not/cannot have a division for it.
? Indicates I need to do research (when I get the game) to see if we can have a division for this.

I know of, practically, all 40 mini-games. I didn't add them all to the list (the new ones from a trailer) as the game comes out in 3 days so there's no need unless I do because of hoping to relieve my anticipation for the game slightly. :P

Anything with a ? will hopefully be addressed once the game releases. Thus far, Rolken, RingRush, genus, and me, of course will be able to do research on these division ideas.

Anyone else who has the game in the next couple of days, please, we'd welcome your input on the matter.

I've decided to start off in researching all of the mini-games as this is what I'm interested in anyways, on account of me being a big Shuffle fan. :D After that's taken care of (won't get them all as there are some that need to be unlocked apparently), I'll head on over to Story where most of you will start anyway, I'm sure. What we need is all the stage names from any source and we also need all of the mini-game names and what's tabulated at the end of the boss missions (I assumed Scores will be tabulated but I don't know for sure) and the Extra Missions (10 in all, excluding the 2 Act Missions). We also need to know the unlockables in the Special Book (actually, come to think of it, maybe I should head over there first and see if anything can be discerned right off the bat) and the names of the two unlockable Special Stages. We also need info on the fabled last unlockable after the final boss is defeated. Supposedly, you can be this unlockable character in the Main Game. We'll need to see about that too and see if seperate character divisions will be needed to be made. On that note, I know right now that the characters you choose in multiplayer have no affect on the gameplay itself so we don't have to worry about that.

Seems like quite a bit but we'll get through it. :)
Thanks in advance for your help.

Now, to get to what you have divulged, SL...

Rolken and I have been testing bonuses in the game, and have some findings.

Ring Bonus-based on rings collected, not your final total. Abilities adding rings to your total are not factored into this score. If you collect rings and die after checkpoint, the rings collected prior to death are carried over; however, those collected after the checkpoint are not.
Enemy bonus-Excluding bosses, each enemy is worth 50 points. So far, I've seen bosses worth 1000 and 2000 points (but I haven't played most of the levels).
Technical bonus-based on hits received/deaths. If you are hit once, .5 is lopped off the constant 2.0 multiplier for a perfect run until it reaches 1.0, the cutoff point. Deaths take 1.0 off of the default multiplier.

Action bonus-Rolken and I are not sure what the action bonus is based on, but have a working hypothesis that it's a constant figure added to your total based on the mission played (for example, a shorter mission will have a lower action bonus while a longer mission will have a higher action bonus). I have yet to test this theory, and can not at the moment.

It should be noted that periods between checkpoints and deaths do not add to your time, but do reset some mission variables. Of note is the Pteranod egg mission in Dinosaur Jungle, which gives you a random egg and nest pair that rarely match. A treasure-hunt strategy involving death abuse could be used, in which each nest/egg pair matches up and gives a better time than a normal run through the mission.

Discuss.

Nice, guys! This is really helping us all out, so thanks to all of you thus far. :)
Such missions that involve "death abuse" should not be added IMO, but, as this is the case in the treasure-hunting stages of SA2B anyways, it's highly debatable...

I'll test out some missions too... when I get the game that is. :(

Lost Prologue has 21 missions

And every stage is a mission. There is no Act 1, Act 2, boss act, ect. There's a single segment "get to the goal!" mission and a "defeat the boss!" mission for most if not all stages though.

21 missions?! Whoa..

Oh, BTW, you guys do know Big's in this game right... OH yeah SPOILERS... >_>

And SL, I wasn't aware of that? I've been told/I've seen the "acts" thing all over but at the same time, I kinda assumed it was that way... I mean, I knew they were respective missions just naming them until the game's release, I placed them under the "Acts" tag I guess..

Ok, upon further testing I have some revisions.

Technical Bonus-for hits, it goes from 2.0 to 1.5 for two hits to 1.2 for three hits to 1.1 for four hits and finally 1 for five hits.
Action Bonus-the ammount of pearls you collected in the stage.

Other than that, I've found no need for changes to my previous post.

Edit: ring and (possibly) pearl totals don't carry over after death. Sorry for the misinformation.

I was just playing a level and found something interesting.

If you hit a checkpoint, collect pearls, and die, your soul gauge will still be what it was upon death, and the time spent after the checkpoint is not counted towards your total time.

For example,if you have it 1/4 full at a checkpoint, then collect some pearls to get it to 1/2, and die, it will be 1/2 full upon respawning.

This leaves almost every mission open to ridiculously low times because of death abuse. It could leave to perfecting certain missions, though as of now no rule should be in place to prevent this because we don't know how competition will pan out. Eventually, a rule will probably be instituted limiting you to a certain ammount of deaths, but I'm not really speaking for anyone but myself here.

Also, ring and pearl bonuses do carry over after death assuming they were collected prior to the checkpoint. Sorry for the misinformation pointing out my supposed misinformation.

Yes, I consider this finding worthy of a double post.

Edit: I forgot to something else, but it's not worth a triple post. The Ring bonus is your rings collected times three. The action bonus is just how many pearls you gathered, with no multiplier.

Some things worth noting.

Once you get sufficiently far enough in the game (I had around 2/3 silver medals, but not sure that's it), a skill to perform Ring Chains in any mission is unlocked.

It looks to me like the only missions that roll back the timer on death are the mainline ones; so far as I've checked, sub-missions do not, rendering any soul gauge shenanigans thankfully mostly useless.

Some sub-mission maps loop, killing RA/SA potential completely as objects regenerate on each pass. Sucks, but there it is. The ones I've sat around and forced to loop repeatedly for verification are the Sand Oasis and Pirate Storm laps, but I'm sure they're everywhere. :(

I unlocked the top speed upgrade at level 63 and after 34 hours of playing, which also kinda sucks. It basically means there's no way to be competitive without playing for uberlong times before even starting to speedrun.

I'm up to like Level 45 now. I have a TON of info to share. I've tested almost everything on the game for competition. Especially Party, which speaking of which, there's quite a few things that need to be addressed.

Will update shortly as I have a ton...

edit:
Adventure Mode Info:

General Rule I've come up with for competition by missions:
*Go for the Goal: ALL (Rings, Score and Times)
*Hands-Off: Only Times
*Special: Varies
*Defeat the Boss: Times
*Diehard: ALL
*Stealth: Times
*Head-to-Head: Times
*Rampage: Times (Not sure about Scores; thinking no...)
*Beat the Clock: Times (Don't think so for Scores but it's debatable I guess...)
*x Rings: Times
*Perfect: Times (I'm thinking YES for Scores but it's debatable...)

edit: Chart update! :D Discuss...

Party Mode Info: :)

First off, you guys DO know that GC controllers work for all games here, right? They even have a page for them on the Mini-Game Screens. Wii Remote page->Instructions->Gamecube. :)

First rule is COM Skill levels must be at Normal.
Modes to use: Submissions must be done in the World Library.
MG's with Time division: Time that's left on the timer like in Shuffle.
No human players allowed.
Games/Compete Simultaneously: Must win for submission to count.
Games/Compete Alternatingly: Don't have to win for submission to count.

Modes:
Tournament Palace - No competition. For the mini-games, you'll be faced off only 1 on 1. In that case: "Submissions in Tournament Palace will not count." Otherwise, seperate divisions but I'm thinking nah...

Treasure Hunt - No competition due to randomness in chests.

Genie's Lair - No competition due to randomness in chests.

World Bazaar - ??? (Want to unlock it badly...)

Pirates Coast: Possible competition. People would differ otherwise, though. Since you go 60 spaces to goal and if you come in 1st on MG's, you can move 10 spaces, maximum score would be 6. We could compete but I don't tihnk you'd be up for that... (Maybe HARD Com's?)

Library: All mini-games can be played individually here, like Toy Box from Shuffle. Use this to submit stats.

Question: The GC Controller affects gameplay in it's favor for that player in some cases. Examples include the Canoe games, the Carpet game (my friend's favorite; I like this one too), Safe Dial, Giant Stakes, and Hatchet. Something to think about.... We should not allow the usage of it I guess although I'd like to see seperate div's for Wii Remote and GC Controller but I know people will deny it. Either that or we could just allow the GC Controller usage... We'll see what your opinions are...

Noteworthy too, is the fact that there is an unlockable difficulty for COM Skills.. Supposedly "Extreme" or "Expert" or something along those lines? Seperate divisions or rulings? There's Easy, Normal, HArd and now Extreme/Expert... Keep this in mind...

Mini-Game List:

2. Hit it! Home Run (X)

Rules Summary for Party:
-COM Skill levels must be at Normal.
-Submissions must be done in the World Library.

Also, thought I'd mention that I'm making vids. I've made one for Sand Oasis, Mission 1 and it's pretty sweet. :)

Any requests for competition vids?

Your general rules are far too limited. Since level design appears to be always different, each mission is fair game for wide competition, unless there's some reason against it.

-Go for the Goal: All (Time, Rings, Score, Ring Chain)
-Hands Off: Time, Score, maybe Ring Chain
-Special: Varies
-Defeat the Boss: Times
-Diehard: All
-Stealth: All
-Head to Head: All
-Rampage: All or Time
-Beat the Clock: All
-Collect Rings: Time, sometimes Score, maybe Ring Chain
-Perfect: All
-No Pearl: All
-Ring Chain: All

Note that a certain skill is necessary for ring chains outside of explicit Ring Chain missions.

Exclusions are missions which regenerate items, usually looping Rampage / Collect Rings missions. There also seem to be non-looping missions which regenerate items; I'm thinking of Levitated Ruin Rampage in particular, where two djinns necessary to hit to progress upwards regenerate indefinitely if you keep falling back onto the lower level. That particular instance doesn't hinder competition since the mission shuts off at 20 djinns, but there's probably others that do and they'll have to be found on a case-by-case basis.

edit: flyby got another one heh. A 20 ring chest regenerates on Levitated Ruin Diehard if you fall back down. No RA/SA there. :(

edit: Levitated Ruin Rampage 20 also loops. Suck.

I'll get more exact data when flyby's not playing, but here's a rough layout.

Times:
LP 1-21, levels 1-12

Scores:
LP 20-21, levels 1-12 with exclusions

Rings:
LP something, levels 1-12 with exclusions

Ring Chains:
levels 1-12 with exclusions

Bosses:
SO 13, EF 13, PO 13, NP 13, NP 14 times

Extra:
Party scores

Sowey guys. Took the game back yesterday. Wrote down all my stats so that's good.

New info tidbit: Mini-Game #33 is Fly! Ptero-Rider. Scores definitely. I'm so glad I unlocked this half-and-hour before I returned the game. :D

And Rolken, you're right. They were too.. general. I just didn't want to go through typing up info about every single mission as that would be very tedious. I do know, though, about each of the missions as I wrote them down so I can help you there. I didn't unlock all that Ring Chain stuff before I returned the game unfortunately.. Finished with 172 Ring Max and Level 50 exactly. :D

As for vids I did. You can look forward to the following vids for competition:

Adventure:
Sand Oasis, M1
Skeleton Dome, M3
Night Palace, M1
Lost Prologue, M1

Party:
Seek! Edge Race

We may have to kill or restrain RA, as it's possible that the maximum ring cap is random. I made a gamefaqs topic requesting people's ring caps, but nobody responded. Here's mine anyway.

75 - ring 248, soul 280, skill 470
70 - ring 234, soul 260, skill 448
65 - ring 220, soul 240, skill 425
60 - ring 210, soul 220, skill 401
55 - ring 200, soul 200, skill 368

TBF Bri 10 hit lv99 and recorded his own in another topic-
99 - ring 372, soul 300, skill 648

It's still entirely plausible that they're preset, but the somewhat arbitrary ending numbers and the erratic skill point additions I've been getting make me suspicious. Hopefully this'll turn out to be a nonissue; SatSR hardly needs another blow to competition.

As for Party Mode, I only intend to rank minigames the game itself ranks. Stuff like survival games isn't competition-worthy when you're just waiting out AI. If AI difficulty affects scores, we should find out which games those are and decide what to do with them.

And then there's still the question of what sub-missions are RA/SA-able. I'll be going through some of them tonight, starting with Evil Foundry. Those who wish to help, the pertinent questions are whether there's a Goal, if not whether the level regenerates objects on looping, and in any mission whether there're objects that respawn regardless of looping.

Times=T, Scores=S, Chain=C, Rings=R. All of Evil Foundry's missions have goals, thankfully. Note that 0 Ring missions are chainable without requiring ring loss due to a skill which converts each Ring to two Pearls, and chain missions are competitive since the mission doesn't end until your winning chain breaks.

edit: a few Sand Oasis added, and I'm done for now

Competition proposal -

Code: [Select]
SO1  T S C R (Goal)
SO2  T S * R (Diehard)
SO3  T S C R (Race)
SO5  T S C R (No jars)
EF1  T S C R (Goal)
EF2  T S C R (Diehard)
EF3  T - C R (0 Rings)
EF4  T * * * (Race)
EF5  T S C R (Timed)
EF6  T S C R (Stealth)
EF7  T - C R (0 Rings)
EF8  T S - R (Perfect)
EF9  T S C R (20 Enemies)
EF10 T - C R (99 Rings)
EF11 T S - R (Perfect)
EF12 T S C R (50 Chain)
EFB  T - - -

Notes-
SO2 - Small number of chainable rings
EF4 - Only three rings in a row in the beginning and a few pits, rendering competition a matter of survival
EF8 & EF11 - Only source of rings is occasional grays, rendering chaining impossible

EFB - Rings and Pearls regenerate, inducing infinite score/rings/chain

And while I'm at it, here's my records so far. I don't have any rings since it doesn't record them.

EF1 - 1881 3:01:90
EF2 - 601 rc14 0:40:35
EF3 - 207 rc22 0:24:41
EF4 - 0:22:06
EF5 - 1182 rc17 1:39:86
EF6 - 519 rc14 0:19:50
EF7 - 362 0:06:66
EF8 - 730 0:27:74
EF9 - 2616 rc15 0:47:13
EF10 - 1458 rc10 0:45:75
EF11 - 860 0:16:01
EF12 - 766 rc60 0:16:78

SO1 - 6336 rc31 1:50:80
SO2 - 699 rc6 0:13:26
SO3 - 494 rc5 0:28:85
SO5 - 3002 rc36 0:51:96

9. Grab It! Bubble Hunt

21. Spin! Safe Dial (S) *
22. Aim! Big Crossbow! (S)
23. Aim! Color Balloon (S)
24. Whack! Hatchet! (S) *
26. Pull on it! Carpet (S) * -> Must be on Normal; if on Easy, pretty high scores are possible
27. Look up! Skydiving (S)
28. Sink 'em! Pirate Ship (S)
29. Reel! Battle Fishing (S) *
31. Cross! Balance Race (S)
32. Put it out! Big Fire (S -> Another good one.)
33. Fly! Ptero-Rider (S)
34. ????? -> Whatever this is; there are rankings.
36. Play! Violin (S)
39. Hold It! Treasure Haul (S) *
40. Grab It! Kri Ma Djinn (S)

Aye, aye captain solely depends on COM Outcome so when they're out, you win. I removed it but we can place COM's on Hard if you want. I still say we shouldn't add it though.

* indicates the GC Controller, when used, gives that player an advantage for competition. It can only be used if they play as Player 2. I ruled that it shouldn't be allowed (not the game, the controller)

I've got A LOT of work to do if I'm going to be able to compete. Just got to Evil Foundry with a lvl 12 Sonic. Did manage to get a gold medal on one of the Dino Jungle stages though.
Ever know what its like to get pwned by a book? Sonic certainly does.

Well, bad news: the Ring / Skill caps are random. So RA will have to be thrown out or capped, and other competition may be hampered if you get the wrong skillpoint levelups, though it may end up not being an issue. Either way, it really sucks.

I say ring cap at 250/255. Everyone can get that, usually far before lv 99. For skills, either cap at something everyone can get like 300 or ban skills completely. Or maybe even have a pre-determined competition skill set.
