News and Updates / Sonic's future goes BOOM and site shenanigans
« on: February 06, 2014, 05:00:31 pm »
If you've been poking around the web, you know that today's an important day for Sonic Team. News came out that they were developing something absolutely crazy and that we'd get it on February 6th. The fateful day has come, and surely enough, crazy has come with it! Behold, Sonic Team's latest game!

Oh, and I guess this exists too. Don't cry too hard.

Moving on, let's talk about the last few days here. I hit a breaking point on Sunday with a large group of people on TSC and stepped away from the site, as I've considered doing for quite a while due to that group. I left my resignation in the staff forum that night along with some thoughts of mine put into writing. I figured the staff would get in touch, we'd talk things through, somebody would take my place, and that'd be the end of it. Instead, the staff didn't even notice the topic. Two days later, people noticed that my user group had changed, and panic ensued as people thought I was hacked. Parax linked my resignation letter in the chat, and the IRC chat that had barely said a word in months suddenly started getting very concerned. I got blasted with messages in Skype about how utterly wrong I was, with some of those messages actually contradictory while all arguing the same point. Despite all of this, there was no reaction from the site owner and no indication that somebody would step up to fill my spot.

If the site largely disagrees with many of my points, then it means the IRC chat is an extremely quiet majority while TSC-related Skype groups have become an extremely vocal minority. While I didn't say it outright in my letter out of respect, the main reason I left was because the things I did hear vocalized made the user base seem like a bunch of total asshats, constantly insulting each other, making arguments based on fallacies, and speaking in a language that can only be described as "Twitchese". However, with the sudden revelation of people on IRC actually caring, I feel that I need to reverse course, but I do still feel that my knowledge isn't up to par. I am constantly checking with other people I trust, then taking their opinion and making sure it makes sense before enacting it myself as an admin. With that said, I spoke to Umbreon about how we progress from here, and we both agreed that we need somebody closer to the competition to have authority around here. While we both respected each other's thoughts on who to choose, we really only agreed 100% on one person.

As of the time of this post, flying fox is a Global Moderator on the forums. We will be talking with her about who else can be trusted with authority as we assemble a group of people that know the competition well for efficient handling of BS calls, rule changes, and forum discipline. Parax and I want to do what administrators do — administrate — and thus we need to delegate some tasks to those that care instead of making those that care report to us for every trivial thing. Beyond the staffing changes, be aware that the shelter of "well, I said it on Skype, not TSC" will no longer work. If you are participating in a group built for a TSC event and/or speaking about issues on TSC with other TSCers, then you are still involved in the TSC community and assholery will not be tolerated. Some rude people have hung around for far too long by hiding just out of TSC's "reach", and it comes to an end starting now for the sake of the entire community.

Parax and GerbilSoft have been discussing the site's functionality or lack thereof this week, so that we can use the chart structure for more than just individual level charts. Given this, I expect that we can bring tournaments, Race Nights, and the like to TSC's charts to get some activity into the IRC and forums. The lack of a social scene here besides the occasional 13-year-old halfwit that joins the site is very depressing and needs to be reversed.

I want to hear some thoughts on what the site can be and should be. Consider who is here, who is silent and who talks, who we want to be here, what Sonic's becoming (you really should have clicked that second link in this post), and where TSC stands in the grand scheme of competition sites and Sonic sites. It's clear that leaving the status quo here will simply continue the site's decline, but we can't abandon our infrastructure either.

Oh, and SonicAD, when you see this next week, I need to be re-added to the SOp list. :P

Beef / Re: ATTN: Parax and Thorn.
« on: January 30, 2014, 03:01:36 pm »
Sure, let's talk.

First of all, when I check the IP address here, I see a second account made last week called "thebestgamer". That account was never activated, but the e-mail attached has "dwhitestename" in it. From this we conclude a few things. First, you are indeed dwhite. Second, you tried to sneak in last week. Third, you typoed your e-mail address (perhaps "dwhite's the name" is what you wanted?) and couldn't activate your account, so you failed last week on your own stupidity. You even talk exactly like dwhite. The fact that you think we're so stupid as to think you're not him is definitely a reason to keep you banned.

But let's talk about your original ban. You started it months back by lying to us about your submitted statistics. When we asked you about what we thought were lies, you piled on the lies further. Seeing that you had no remorse, we banned you from submitting, although your forum privileges were left intact per forum policy. You later made the claim that you went around and reviewed various fora, deliberately breaking the rules to test the administration, and that you'd act like a normal forum member from that point forward. However, this claim was complete bullshit too, as you had no clue about forum etiquette despite claiming to have been to multiple forums. You repeatedly posted in old topics despite gigantic, bold, red warnings in the posting window not to do so. You flaunted your opinion as fact constantly. You often posted a single sentence in a topic instead of adding something relevant, which is fine on occasion but not as a repeated act.

The topic about your dreams wasn't the lone offense; it was just the last straw. As I mentioned, I moderate a chatroom for aspiring lucid dreamers. The lies you spouted were absolutely awful to me, and each time you were challenged, you changed the premises of your argument. If you want to move the goalpost like that, you can play Crisis City Act 1 in Sonic Generations, but we don't tolerate that shit on the forum. The best part of that topic, however, was when Parax gave you a response that was absolutely dripping with sarcasm, and you took it as a compliment by reading it at face value. That was the point at which I knew you were unfit to interact with people on this forum. Parax clearly had the same idea, as when I went to subject you to a long, drawn-out joke that would end in a ban, he had already banned you outright.

You've already gotten more words from me than you deserve, but I'll take the time to summarize my post anyway. You're an attention whore that resorts to making shit up to get people to interact with you, because you're not interesting enough otherwise. You feel like we should all accept every word you say, but all of it is worthless drivel. Therefore,

YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE.

You have 15 minutes to say your goodbyes before I ban your account for good. Make it quick. EDIT: Time's up.

Also, HermitHelmet, stop feeding the trolls or you're next. Let the admins do that feeding; they're professional troll-feeders with a college degree in the subject.

When watching the video, it seemed like the webcam delay increased over time. I thought I was crazy, but THC98 went and synced the game and webcam based on the timing of the jump-to-boost near the beginning. Even when synced here, it's clear that the webcam delay appears to increase over time, as the left-right-left rail switching at the video's end is only shown as left-right on the keyboard before the video ends, with the press of the right key coming very late. Considering the processing power you're claiming, I find it hard to believe that the webcam delay actually did increase; I think it's more likely that the game was played at a slower speed, due to Dolphin slowdown or otherwise, and then converted to a 60 FPS video.

HermitHelmet, considering that the OP and Reply #3 combine to state that the OP is a vision of the future, I'd say inquiring about his visions of the future is very much on topic. Please stop backseat modding.

dwhitethegamer, I'm a chatroom moderator on a different site related to dreaming. Why would I open up a dreaming board on a speedrunning site? Beyond that, everybody believes that he/she is making decisions in dreams, whether normal or lucid. That's not a special quality. >_> What I'm curious about is this idea that your dreams are precognitive; that is, that they "come true", as you put it. I still don't really have any explanation on that. You're not giving anecdotes nor are you positing a reason beyond "God wills it." If you're going to make a big claim, I expect a good explanation. I've already mentioned that I've watched people go off the deep end after connecting their dreams to supernatural occurrences, so this is a sore spot for me.

Also, don't triple post. We have a "Modify" button for a reason.

dwhite, that's what has me confused! You said "I'm right on the action, making decisions that impact that dream," so you're consciously directing your dreams. But God is also giving you an insight into the future while you direct it...? That implies that you control the future!

It's not your dream that I'm criticizing. I think dreams are beautiful things. It's your supernatural claim that I doubt. If you want to criticize the dreams I have, by all means go ahead, as I'm not claiming they affect the outside world. Because of that, the only one that needs to believe things is me. You, however, are making quite the broad claim, good sir.

^ No, we're not criticizing you for your dream. We're criticizing you for your claim that believing in God gives you precognitive dreams. There's a difference.

My dreams, at a majority of the time, come true.

This is the part for which I want clarification. The rest of your statement, where you say you control the dream consciously, sounds like a normal, well-controlled lucid dream, which makes it even less likely to be precognitive because you're controlling things, not God. Yet they still come "true"? Your theory seems inherently contradictory.

The Kid: If it wasn't meant that way, then it was just meant as a derisive message. At that point in the conversation, I don't think there was any reason to be derisive. However, now that dwhitethegamer is saying he may have received a message from God about the next Sonic game, I think there's reason to take the piss out of him.

dwhitethegamer: I've already mentioned that I'm a moderator in a lucid dreaming chatroom. I am aware of much of what can and cannot occur in sleep. One thing I've noticed over the years is that the moment people start to believe their dreams have some connection to outside, supernatural forces — God, Satan, the Astral Plane, the spirits of the deceased, etc. — they get crazy. Really crazy, in fact. Considering that many people don't even recall their dreams, it seems that dreams would be a silly place for God to get in touch with you; he'd be taking a huge risk of just having his message lost. There's also the Occam's Razor principle, wherein the explanation that requires the least amount of assumptions is usually the most correct one. I think it's safe to say that you've had some exposure to Sonic over the course of the day, so you had a dream with a Sonic-style plot. In fact, I often dream of Sonic games, and not one of my dreams has turned into a Sonic game.

Let's put the icing on the cake, though. As a lucid dreamer, I've run fast, done flips, sported some grinds on rails, leaped from platforms, flown around at top speed, and other Sonic-style stunts. The avatar I just put up is how a friend of mine (another lucid dreamer) claimed to see me in a lucid dream of his. If we assume that God is equally likely to contact you, me, and my friend, then I'd say the odds are 2 in 3 that the next Sonic game stars me! That's fucking awesome!

First off, I wasn't the one saying your dream was an extension of your post; I was actively telling The Kid not to say that.

Secondly — and I'm opening a whole can of worms here, but whatever — I don't believe that God is giving you precognitive dreams about Sonic games. You'll have to deal with my skepticism there.

General Sonic / Re: A Sonic Game Dream.
« on: January 12, 2014, 03:00:53 pm »
^ As a moderator in a chatroom for lucid dreamers, I have to ask that you don't analyze his dream as some sort of extension of his posts from yesterday. He frequents a Sonic forum, so it's only natural that he'd eventually dream of something Sonic-related.

Besides, the cool dreamers don't play the games in their dreams; they star in them. No fanfic can beat a nice lucid dream; it's the one place you're allowed to act like a self-insert fan character and not be teased. :)

I'd prefer an explanation. There have been instances in this community of people miming hand motions while playing a video back on a television.

SEGA and Nintendo have outright said that their exclusivity contract extends to the next Sonic game. Any rumor about the game showing up on XBOne, PS4, and/or PC is one that outright ignores facts.

Let me add that while most of Tales' points are reiterated from before, they are the ones with which he is still not satisfied, and I agree with his inquiry. In particular, "I hammered the button really fast" does not satisfy the Starlight Carnival boost issue, as in a 30 FPS game, that's a rate of 15 button presses per second. I have enough Mario Party experience to know that this wouldn't be practical at all nor can one simply twitch fast enough; most button presses of this speed are done in a horizontal motion that also grazes other buttons.

At this point, I see two possibilities: TASing, or assigning multiple possible keys to one button input. Both of these are illegal via our emulator rules.

Quote from: Competition Rules
* You may use any emulator for competition; however, any action performed during the run (be it an in-game action or use of an emulator function) that cannot be replicated on console voids your stat.
...
* Any game running on a PC or emulator must perform at full speed while playing the game you're submitting for (60 FPS in most cases). The exception is if lag is caused by the game, rather than by bad hardware or emulation.

Goldwolf11: http://soniccenter.org/rankings/sonic_lost_world_3ds/times/sky_road_extra/normal
Your time here smashes the global record on the official leaderboards by a whopping 46 seconds. More surprisingly, your time is not on said leaderboards. Would be be able to either update the leaderboard with your time or explain your method? The time seems likely to be false otherwise.

TheChaosEmeralds: http://soniccenter.org/rankings/sonic_lost_world_3ds/times/windy_hill_2/normal
Your time here is only a second shy of the world record, but when looking at the global leaderboards, your time is notably absent. It is also your only fast time on TSC's charts for the game. As asked of Goldwolf11, can you either update the leaderboards with the time or explain your method?

^ I... just... why would you post this? You were just tempbanned for posting in this topic without permission, and another admin even made a topic to remind people to talk to an admin before posting in here. Yet you come in and post again without permission to complain about somebody who created a reasonable argument against supersonic917 and got permission from me to post it. dwhitethegamer posted in here too and got another tempban for it, but he wasn't directly saying that people were outright wrong as you are. Between the random posts that add no value to topics and this transgression, you can consider your posting privileges revoked. You can submit all of the statistics you want, but you may not speak on this forum again.

For everybody else reading this topic, let me be absolutely clear, as I've been getting messages outside of the forum regarding this topic. My assistance with getting supersonic917's account situated and dispelling the false evidence against him is in no way a defense of possible cheating. I'd hesitate to say we have a "justice system" on this site, but for what we do have, we always give the chance for the accused to make a case against whatever solid evidence we've accrued. I support people like THC98 who are able to create hard evidence such as that, and I support any accused that can give an explanation that passes muster. I do not support some of the tactics I've seen in TSC-related Skype conversations, however, as they all banked on the fact that the TAS videos he did not submit to TSC are proof that his TSC stats are TASed. THC98 was the one who looked at what was actually submitted to TSC and created a reasonable argument, then received permission from me — by proxy, but permission nevertheless — to present it here. InferSaime took it upon himself to take what he saw as a small inconsistency and use it as evidence without permission, and it turned out that he was not only wrong, but that he led supersonic917 to remove some of his videos, further obfuscating the truth. He was tempbanned for this.

supersonic917, I do expect a response to flying fox's question and THC98's evidence, as it's looking very likely that illegitimate activity is going on.

The rest of you, don't expect to stay here if you're going to create full-on witch hunts. Make a legitimate case before making an argument to an administrator instead of afterwards, as we're not magical beings with privileged knowledge of every detail of the 51 games and two DLC expansions we track on the site. We need facts, not possibilities. You can present those possibilities for us to research, of course, but I will not tolerate large groups of people yelling at me to take action without hard proof.

EDIT: It's been brought to my attention that there is an input buffer at the end of a stomp, so jumping/boosting within one frame of the end of a stomp is actually a cakewalk. However, THC98's point about the pixel-perfect landing still stands.

InferSaime, if you looked at that 0:56:33, you'll see that it says "Submitted by an administrator" in the tooltip. The time was simply migrated over from his old account, as was already stated in this topic.

We take the Leaderboard Disputes forum very, very seriously, as it can permanently taint somebody's perception of other members. To that extent, I am aware that InferSaime is lying through his teeth when he says he is sorry for posting without permission, as at the time of his post, he was in IRC and Skype with me and was well aware that I was online and able to respond if he asked for permission. I am fairly sure he is trying to corner whom he believes to be a cheater by his own methods. Chackoman and dwhite may not have the same agenda, but I also believe that they are not sorry either, as they could have chosen not to post and they both have a record of posting in random topics at random times. With all of this in mind, the three of them are banned from posting until 2014 comes for me, and I will be speaking to InferSaime before he is unbanned.

Yes, I'm stating this publicly. I want to make it clear that this board has specific rules for a reason, and that baseless accusations will not be tolerated. Should any more concrete proof come up, I will certainly grant permission to anybody that asks for it and shows said proof, but under no means will I allow vigilante justice.

While it's on my mind, can you tell us how your Tropical Resort 1 time in Sonic Colors (Wii) is four seconds faster than anybody else? The level's pretty well-optimized, so I need to know that the time you submitted as htan wasn't a typo.

I don't remember receiving any request from you for a username change. Admins can perform the change fairly effortlessly.

I've already explained how you can be unbanned — by explaining both things I asked about. You've given me an explanation for the username, but I still need an explanation for why you resubmitted a time I removed after I PMed you to say that the time was in violation of the Competition Rules as shown in your included YouTube video.

After you first submitted your Windy Hill 1 Normal time for the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, you were sent a PM (see the upper-left corner of the site) telling you that your time was revoked due to the corresponding video using Super Sonic, which is not permitted. You then proceeded to resubmit the same time and the same video. Please provide an explanation for your actions.

Additionally, another user, htan, has linked to your YouTube channel for submissions, and a quick check of identifying information suggests that he and you may in fact be the same person. We would like to know if/why you have two accounts on the site.

We require an explanation for both of these things before your ability to submit statistics will be reinstated.
