More acts for Holoska are on Xbox Live Marketplace at the usual 250 points. Level packs seem to be appearing for a new continent every other Thursday -- mark your calenders!

Day Act 1 received the usual "hard mode" treatment. Act 2 does this as well, only by basing each lap on a specific idea -- the first lap requires precision homing attacks (even going so far as make you take advantage of the small time frame you get to homing attack *upwards*), the second lap has platforming while you ride the sled from Act 1, and the final lap is sort of a hodge-podge of running, quick time events, and precision stomping. Act 3 is a more complex version of the Savannah Citadel 2 Day drift time trial, and Act 4 has you speed off of ramps that don't launch you to safe ground... for the first time in Sonic history, this is not a glitch!?! You have to direct air boosts or light dashes or fly through dash rings to land on course... and when you reach the end, you repeat the course in the other direction.

Night Act 2 uses a new gimmick in which you light torches in the same way you melted ice in Act 1, and has a fair amount of platforming and balancing sections. Act 3 teases you with the goal ring in sight early on and has you navigate a long course to reach it. The requisite "hard mode" Act 1 is strangely absent, and the mission counter on the stage select is again off by one. Coincidence?

Unrelatedly, Top Tens are coming up soon. Cower in fear.

Tournament Central / On Tourneys and Leagues
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:35:22 pm »
This will be a LONG post and will ask for a well-thought-out, detailed reply. If you are incapable of either of these things, please click here to leave the topic.

So I don't know if I'd like to wedge another tournament or league in the two/three week timespan between flyby's current league and summer league, but I can't figure out what the hell people are looking for in a tournaleague, so... yeah. The tournaments flopped, the marathon started with about 30 interested people and fell down to 10 or so after a half-hour (and ended in a week of drama), RPG's league flourished before the challenges became batshit bonkers and everybody quit, and flyby has managed to rope in 28 people with hers (RPG is on the list for said league but has told me he's not competing).... and for all of these cases, I don't know why they ended as they did.

So for the sake of having a tournaleague actually run start to finish... with people still interested by the end... without drama, I'm going to ask questions based on formats we've already tried and on formats we haven't tried. I wish polls on SMF forums allowed for multiple options, but they don't, so I'm typing everything out and asking for replies. Meh. You don't have to restrain yourself to picking one of the listed choices in the questions -- mix them, make your own, say you'd be fine with several of the choices. Thing about if you were the player in each circumstance, and how much you'd enjoy the rulings.

All said and done, this could provide a standardized competition format on TSC... or just complicate things. :P

1. How should competitors earn points throughout the tournaleague?
Earn points solely on performance relative to other players (2 votes: Shadowfan, mike)
- e.g. 1:52:09 earns 10 points, 1:52:10 earns 8 points, 2:05:46 earns 6 points despite being far off 2nd place.
- Closest method to the workings of the TSC Charts.
Earn points for reaching a specified target, and/or extra points for over-target performance in set intervals
- 1:52:09 likely does not earn more points than 1:52:10... somewhat more fair, somewhat unfair.
- Times separated by a small amount on opposite sides of these intervals earn different points, so the intervals should be stated in advance so that competitors can plan around this.
- All players who fall below target are rated equally... fair in that one bad challenge is forgiven, unfair in that all below-target players are considered equal despite performance.
Earn points for reaching a target and/or extra points for over-target performance, AND earn points for performance relative to others (1 vote: Thorn)
- Evens out the issue of treating all below-target competitors equally, but also raises the issue of the worth of 1:52:09 vs. 1:52:10.

2. How should a winner be determined, or how should winners be determined?
Most points accumulated wins (2 votes: Shadowfan, mike)
- Requires no explanation. Simple, straightforward, etc.
Pit the best against each other in a final challenge
- Can allow somebody who fell behind in a challenge he/she was not skilled at to act as if it never happened.
- Can cause somebody with a huge lead to fall to bad luck.
Pit competitors against each other in a final challenge, handicapped based on points accumulated (1 vote: Thorn)
- e.g. The top three (or even the entire group of) competitors compete in a challenge, but each point accumulated subtracts x seconds from your final time.
- Allows for an epic final round that doesn't negate the entire tournaleague's worth, but can cause people who are hopelessly behind to be stuck in an unwinnable competition.

3. What tasks should a tournaleague encompass?
Time Attacking: fastest wins
Time Attacking, Boss Attacking, Score Attacking: best wins (1 vote: Shadowfan)
Ring Attacking, Item Attacking, or other Collectable Attacking: most wins
Collecting a set amount of something: fastest wins, or most wins with ties broken by time taken
All of the above (2 votes: mike, Thorn)

4. What levels should a tournaleague encompass?
Any game on TSC, adjusted to avoid forcing people to play games he/she can't access (1 vote: Shadowfan)
- Hey, it got flyby 28 competitors...
Only TSC games where proof can be provided easily
- Keeps BSers in check: you know you've had a nagging feeling you were being jipped at least once. :P
Only popular TSC games
- Draws in the largest audience but makes for dull challenges.
- Rampant memorization required.
TSC games and ROM hacks (2 votes: mike, Thorn)
- Allows for custom levels catered to competition.
- Disallows memorization in certain circumstances, allows it in others.
- Can cause arguments as to how good the tournaleague operator's "taste" in level design is.

5. How should challenges be assigned?
All challenges are detailed in advance, and all players do all challenges in a given amount of time (e.g. a week) (1 vote: mike [although he seems on the fence about multiple challenges with weightings...?])
- No denying this is fair. :P
Challenges are laid out in advance, and each player picks [a] specific challenge(s) to compete in (1 vote: Shadowfan)
- Can lead to challenges never being done over the course of the competition.
- If only one player does a challenge, he/she gets full credit by default...?
Challenges are laid out in advance, and each player picks [a] specific challenge(s) to compete in, then may complete other challenges for extra points (1 vote: Thorn)
- Rewards effort as well as skill, but the exact balance between the worth of the two is subjective.
- A player doing a second challenge that can practice should not be compared against people who did a challenge as soon as they received it, so a target system is needed, with reduced points given for second challenges.
Players are given an amount of time to meet with tournaleague officials to receive a challenge, after which he/she must submit his/her best run within a short time (e.g. an hour)
- Disallows memorization of levels by keeping them secret until the challenge
- Can cause a player to not be able to practice for a challenge he/she is naturally not skilled at (this may be negated by handwaving a bad challenge -- see options in previous questions).
- Requires tournaleague operator to get in touch with several other people to act as officials, so that challenges can be given out and graded when the operator is not present.

6. What forum should they be in? (A minor point, but a point nevertheless.)
Tournament Central (3 votes: Shadowfan, mike, Thorn)
- Currently contains three failed or semi-failed tourneys.
Competition Central
General Sonic
Gaming and Grazing
- Currently contains two leagues, a marathon, and mini-races that eventually started the marathon.

And one last idea that'll probably only work once, so I'm separating it from the list of questions that applies more generally:
The Sonic DIY competition saw 14 acts designed by five or six people in the span of three weeks. If I do run a tournaleague, I'd like to have competitors be able to submit ROM-hacked levels before the tournaleague starts for consideration in challenges, allowing for the designer to get a leg-up on competing. To keep things extremely simple, I'd distribute a tileset I'm using in my hack that's *very* easy to work with, and I'd put out a five-minute video tutorial to show people the ropes. Designing a quick tournaleague act should only take two or three hours (short act + a few bug tests), and I'd do bugfixes and distribute maps to other competitors before the challenge for route planning. I know this is a long shot, but it's a crazy attempt to be different and it'll take relatively little time for a competitor to do something decent and earn an advantage.

So, answer bolded questions above please, and give opinions on the preceding paragraph if you care to.

Emerald Challenges / ECs finally done. Like we've said for months.
« on: March 11, 2009, 07:37:51 pm »
Right, so, we've been saying "the challenges are dead" for the longest time, but we've never really put any finality behind it for the longest time. But I've been getting a lot of questions about them lately for reasons only all-powerful deities know, so I'm formally locking the things.

If you're wondering why they're locked down, we're basically just sick of them at this point. When the challenges first came here, they were great for getting better TSCers back into competing, just like the Leagues do now. That was short-lived, and pretty soon the only people still posting were all doing the same beginner-level challenges and somehow screwing them up, e.g. I can't tell you how many people I watched struggle with the red diagonal spring in Emerald Hill 2. After our brains started seeping out of our ears and onto our shoulders from watching it so many times, we simply lost interest. Case and point: I became the only judge left, and every once in a while I get a PM telling me off for being months behind grading. Even the creator of these challenges isn't grading them anymore; that says a lot.

Also, on the subject of the beginner challenges being the only ones that are ever done, I don't think that learning to collect 100 rings in a Sonic act or learning what the 50,000 point time bonus is deserves a reward. But that's just my opinion.

Finally there are a few people who want to take over the grading on their own time. That's fine... just do it somewhere else. Despite SDM saying that they're his idea and "forfeiting" them to RPG and I in an SCD topic that was wiped, they're still an identifying feature of SCD and I'd rather they stayed that way, so I'm "forfeiting" them right back. If you want to grade ECs, talk to SDM about it, and if he tells you to go ahead, do it on a different forum. This also applies to custom challenges: if you don't have enough support on TSC to get people to compete in the challenges before you post them, expect an immediate topic lock. There's enough ridiculous ideas for challenges floating around that rightfully get no attention.

Of course, RPG is the only one with moderator powers over his Mural Challenges, so I can't lock those. If you still have a challenge fetish, go satisfy it in RPG's forum! The other forums are still here for archival purposes: if an admin doesn't want them any more, he'll lock them, else this'll stay.

Right, so, what do you guys wanna have in place of this forum? I call a forum for forum games; 1000 Blank White Cards, forum mafia, corrupt-a-wish game... ooh, so fun. *shot*

Gaming and Grazing / HackTube
« on: February 08, 2009, 10:42:25 pm »
I'm well aware we have a Hax0ring forum, but it's dead, and if League and Marathon stuff can go here instead of in Competition Central, then... yeah.

Anyway, HackTube. Too many times have I seen
Guy A: "Sonic Team sucks and is all gimmicks now, dicks, etc."
Guy B: "Hey have you tried that game by [insert fan name here]?"
Guy A: "Naw, that'll suck balls, Ima go play Sonic 2 a bunch more."

Well, now you have no more excuses. Whereas before you had to download hacks, boot up your favorite emulator, try it, hate it, and then delete it, HackTube cuts out the middle steps! You can sample hacks on the laggy, music-destroying Java Applet on each hack's HackTube page. Don't like what you see? No problem, just go do something else, and that copy of the hack you "downloaded" to play it in the applet will disappear from your temp folder when you browser decides to clean house. Do like what you see? Use the Download link under the Java Applet to save a copy, and play it on a real emulator in all of its 60fps, SMPS glory.

We've already got a testimonial to the greatness that is HackTube:
<mike89> before I had no excuse [not to try fan creations] and was just being an asshole
<mike89> but now I genuinely don't have time to be playing hacks :(
One more satisfied TSCer for the record!

Recommended hacks:
- Sonic 3D: No Flickies Hack - Exactly what it says on the tin. Makes the game too easy, but perhaps more fun...?
- Sonic 2 Retro Remix - My hack, plugging omg. Eight-act layout hack, with art for a few levels done by DNXDelta and music help from Tweaker.
- Sonic 1 - Return to the Origin - Also what it says on the tin. Play through the levels of Sonic 1 in reverse... some areas are modified to be playable backwards, of course.
- Sonic 2 Armageddon Game - A fun eight-act layout hack.
- Sonic 2 Advanced Edit - Only six acts long and not without bugs, but an extremely impressive layout and art hack.

Obligatory "discuss".

TUSC News / It's that time of year again
« on: September 02, 2008, 01:25:11 pm »
Since everybody's up in arms over lack of Megamix rankings due to events beyond my control, I'm making filler. Deal with it.

August 31st was the deadline for Sonic Retro's Hacking Contest 2008. This is usually when the most prestigious hacks come out of the closet and release public betas -- however, this year almost nobody with a big-name hack wanted to show their work to the public, so there were very few public releases. The best of those that did surface, however, are on Sonic Retro's front page.

In honor of the two ROMs of awesome that surfaced along with mine, I'm opening up rankings for the finished parts of these hacks as a change of pace from the lolity of the last bunch of hacks RPG added to the site *shot*. A quick breakdown:

Sonic 1 Pixel Perfect
This is a comprehensive art and layout edit of Green Hill Zone by JcFerggy and NovaWizard. Nova's level layout is extremely flowing, and JC's art takes a cue from Sonic 1 Megamix with windows poking from the sides of the landscape. Spindash has been added, as have dynamic palettes and new loops.

Sonic 2 Advanced Edit
By Rika Chou, this is possibly the best-known Sonic 2 hack, and for good reason. The art is very abstract and eye-catching, level layout bounces erratically between speed sections, platforming, and downright cheap setups --sorry Rika, I'm opinionated :( -- and there's a whopping six acts up for show. Level selecting to Mystic Cave, however, reveals a fourth zone nearly completed. Before anybody asks: no, the Casino Night acts under construction aren't going on the rankings.

Sonic 2 Retro Remix
Call it a shameless plug if you must, but I'm not listening to you. After DNXDelta and I were kicked off left something involving not working for the Pixel Perfect team, this hack spawned from the oozy remains. DNX has a completely different art direction than Pixel Perfect does, and level layouts... well, it's not fair for me to talk up my own, k?

Okay, compete pplz.

Emerald Challenges / Emerald Challenges Officially Gone
« on: June 16, 2008, 11:00:11 pm »
Simply put, the computer that I had Macromedia Fireworks on had to be restored to factory settings yesterday, and I no longer have a license to reinstall it. RPG lost his copy long ago, and SDM has kind of stopped caring. So you can do any challenge you like at this point, but don't expect a reward, because we have no way of giving one.

[insert epitaph here]

rolkupdate: SDM has taken the Emerald Challenges back to SCD again.

Hax0ring / Bored again, back to haxxing
« on: March 23, 2008, 01:26:45 pm »
Beta is here.

Yeah, another S2 hack, I'm bored. Emerald Hill 1 through Chemical Plant 2 has been designed, with a few lagging layout choices from Turbo (the good parts, I swear). Special Stage 1 is done up to the second checkpoint; everything after that is leftover from Sonic 2. Levels are longer this time around due to ASM modding being more forgiving than hex modding.  That pesky aerial speedcap is nerfed too.

I have music plans, but as with Turbo I'll worry about new sound driver implementation at a later date. I'll use the Sonic 1 driver instead of the Sonic 2 Beta driver this time around, so no screechy noises.

Typical replies may follow.

Wikkity! / ITT SCD has open staffing?
« on: February 11, 2008, 06:59:07 pm »
If this hasn't caught your eye yet, get over to SCD and take a look. No link is being provided because I'd rather use acronyms to keep a few of the idiots out. Wall of text ahead...

As SCD undergoes its mysterious revamp, there's one thing catching my eye: the old "SCD is closed" page talked about a complete revamp, saying some staffing was corrupt, some users were becoming ignorant, and the site was generally slipping away (keep sarcastic responses about this statement to yourself, I know you have them, heh). If ever there was a time to again try for that gushy inter-site harmony that we keep saying would be nice but will never happen... well, now would be it. :P

Basically I'm using this supposed revamp as a time to look at TSC's stand on SCD:
  • So, how many people here actually know about all of the inter-site drama? I joined the site just as the Olympics shenanigans were going down, so I was confused by a fair chunk of it. A lot of our current crowd came from SCD.
  • Of those who said "yes" above... who still gives a shit?

I'm not stupid, I know the odds of the sites ever so much as being indifferent to each other is slim, let alone the odds of inter-site support, especially because SCD and TSC have tended to not like each other's crowds. But I do think that a few "If I Had a (Ban) Hammer" TSCers should throw their hats into SCD's mix, or at least attempt to. I won't lie, I'm partially posting this topic because TSC is a bit slow as of late and I'm looking for a reason to branch out a bit. I want to check what the TSC consensus is on the site revamp before I make any moves, however, and also to see if anybody else from TSC supports the "cause".

...I also don't know whether to check out "Gaming Staff" or "Forum Moderator", because a high Sitewide and Emerald Challenge grading supports the former, but If I Had a (Ban) Hammer status and the required TSC hatred of stupidity supports the latter. :P And the apps both say to only submit one form.

Let me just make one thing clear, in case I haven't already: TSC is my personal origin and also where my support would go in all but the most unreasonable of inter-site conflicts if I did this, and I'm willing to be that other site prominents would do the same... well, maybe not SDM, but since he originated from SCD and was marked as an "executive" there on the old closing page, that's his right. But if I ever looked like I'd abandoned TSC, I've already sent mike and RPG my home address so that they can beat me senseless. This is just my feeble attempt to do the typical and gushy inter-site love promotion that comes up every so often, and also to see if grudges have subsided enough that I wouldn't be killed in my sleep if I tried pitching my hat into the ring.

P.S.

Also if one of us did get taken over there, since SCD was a touch more family-friendly, I guess we wouldn't be able to say things such as

General Sonic / Nifty Lil' Holiday Gift (or something)
« on: December 21, 2007, 02:51:03 pm »
I had spare time to kill and decided to tinker around in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. This is what popped out.

Ice Cap 1 is modded for your gaming pleasure. Level select is same as always, and the level's only set up for Sonic alone. If I sent you a beta of this, it's been altered since, so you should grab the newer one.

Of course, since TSC is "moving away from stat submissions and into competitive gaming", or however mike put it, I figure I'll try making it a contest like everything else on TSC. Whoever posts in this topic and attaches a .giz of the best scoring run (not fastest, although a 50k Time Bonus will help) before New Year's EST will get... iono yet. I'm pestering Gerbil about having lil' contests like this seasonally and setting up a worthless Site Award for it, but more than likely I'll end up tossing over the same AniGIF Trophy that I used in Tourney 1/2. Meh.

For those of you who don't know TSC's rules for Sonic 3 scores:
No bonus/special stages allowed
No dying
Must finish within 9:58
May only hit the end-of-act sign once (subsequents hits should be deducted from your submitted score to compensate)

61200 - Thorn (although I don't count, just giving a target)
57200 - Rick

Leaderboard Disputes / BS on FoxLuc's Chemical Plant 2 - Sonic record
« on: December 20, 2007, 04:35:36 pm »
Nothing major, I just suspect that Sonic & Tails were used, when submissions call for one character only. If this is legit... well, wow. If not, just play again with only one character. Personally, I don't compete in Sonic 2 much anymore, I'm just drawing attention to this for those who do play it.

The "Tails triggers the door" trick was discovered quite a while ago and banned from here, if that's what created this record.

EDIT: The rules have since changed to allow Tails to be controlled by the AI, allowing the strategy in question, but the rest of this topic was made before this change.

Competition Central / itt TSC Unites
« on: December 13, 2007, 03:16:10 pm »
...or for our more dyslexic members such as RPG, "tit TSC Unties".

I logged on today and checked the Sitewides per usual, to see how well I'm closing the gap on mike89. Usually I'm ecstatic when mike falls a point or two, but today I was shocked to see that he had fallen a whopping ten points overnight. I asked in chat, and I learned that DarkspinesSonic had taken mike's Drift championship... and in an instant, that ecstatic feeling I had turned into pure horror.

TSC, lend me your ears. DarkspinesSonic, henceforth referred to as DsS, is taking over our site. Whereas mike once thought it unorthodox that I claimed the Chaotix championship before I'd even been a TSCer for three weeks, DsS has now taken FIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS in mere months. He has usurped RPG for the fourth spot on the Sitewides, and I say that his reign shall end there. I believe that if TSC unites and stands its ground, we can stop DsS's tyrannical reign. Here are my pleas:

Since DsS has taken largely obscure championships, I ask that those with championships in odd games prepare to defend their territory. I am manning the front on Chaotix and S3D, and I ask that Auriman watches out for Jam, as DsS has *ahem* jokingly suggested finding the game and a Saturn. Drift 2 and Shadow should be watched carefully as well.

Secondly, DsS largely prefers 3D games. All players of the Adventure games, Heroes, Shadow, S'06, etc. should prepare for total war.

Lastly, DsS seems to believe that he has an imposing, furry nick. I believe that he's let power go to his head, and that the rest of us must show that we can be an even match. I have changed the chat topic to show that all of us are closet furries, not just him, SJ, PsyMar, PPA, ks8, Achlys, SM, shadowblast, Sondow... *ahem* Back on topic. I request that everybody who has done the Emerald Challenges returns the pics responsibly (only eight pics) to his/her sig as an emblem of skill, and that the sig reflects that he/she is a member of the Anti-DsS coalition. I will affix the DarkSpine- prefix to the front of my forum and chat names to let him know that I see him as no better than I, although I will spare my site name so that I may maintain my own identity.

TSCers, heed the call. We've fought N00bs of the Apocalypse, SCD, the Sonic Olympics... however now the fight is on our home turf: the competition charts. If you're bored, stop jacking off and submit stats. All stats, even horrible ones, add weight to popular games outside of DsS's reign and slow down his conquest. I appreciate the efforts of those such as SkyLights in toughening up the competition on popular games, and I respect those who are playing with difficulty, such as genus participating in tournaments despite his psycho parents and Sondow playing with disfigured hands. I may go as far as proposing that genus a.k.a. blueblaze be allowed to re-enter the competiton, as despite his malicious doings in the past he now seems loyal to TSC and may offer to help the resistance. These are tough times, and they call for a tough rebellion against the up-and-coming overthrow of the site. It's war now.

May we maintain our home,
DarkspinesThorn

« on: October 22, 2007, 08:59:06 pm »
See topic. Of course, the Internet is all males, therefore to kill time we talk shit and brag about the size of our e-penises.

...but just how big are you here? In the vein of the genus-inspired random questions topic (which got a lot more traffic than I thought it would :P), I propose we measure our TSC reps, and then compare using a nifty chart.

Care to measure? Begin to create a new post, and type "8D". Position the cursor in between the two characters, then follow these instructions:

- If your profile says that you post at an average of 0.5 posts per day or greater, type ==.
- If you made a topic in Hiya Folks upon joining, type =.
- If you chat in #soniccenter, type ===.
- If you have a mode higher than Voice in #soniccenter other than Half-ops (that is, Founders, Administrator, Ops, or having been Voiced before Voicing was standard), type ==. Type another == for each position above Half-ops.
- If you had the balls to post answers in the genus-inspired random questions topic, type =. Type an additional = if you answered at least two FanFic questions, and another = if you answered at least five of genus' questions.
- Type = for every six months you have been on the site.

You must also comment on the reps of all of the other posters in the topic, saying if they are good, neutral, or bad. Board Games / The genus-inspired Random Questions Topic
« on: October 16, 2007, 05:43:41 pm »
EDIT: I was a strange person two and a half years ago, I suppose... the questions in the sequel to this topic, also on the Board Games board, are much more sane.

So I'm in chat and suddenly genus asks me when the last time I vomited was, or what my greatest fear is, or what my favorite color is. I have no idea where this information is going... probably to some twisted psychology experiment. Regardless I propose we make this topic with random, genus-esque questions that'll give genus all the infinitesimal details of our mind that he'll ever need, and that other TSCers can "wtf" at. Also, genus can lace this topic with whatever his heart wants to ask, and I'll edit it in up here.

I've split them into categories, and have made it so that the questions in the bottom categories are the ones that I think people are most reluctant to answer. You don't have to answer them all, but the idea's to answer the ones that strike you as weird. Here's what I got when I asked what the purpose of this is:
<genus> ...it's good to ask these sorts of questions
<genus> to encourage general unorothodoxy
As topic creator I'll be fair and provide my responses after a while too. >_>

Reality
- What's your greatest fear?
- Most everybody on TSC has a screen name that really has no meaning to it, but sounds cooler or tougher than his/her real name. What's your personality like out in the real world?
- When, where, and why is the last time you vomited?
- Does anything that you see on a daily basis gross you out? What?
- Do you know what the integral of xexdx is (don't give the answer, or everybody'll know :P)? Do you care?
- How often do you bathe or shower, and how well? Do you brush your teeth every night?
- What is your favorite color or colour?
- How are/were your grades in school/college?
- Are you socially awkward?
- Do you have any deformities of which TSC would be interested in knowing?
- Do you like your bed soft, firm, or in between. To what extent between?
- Would you be able to live in the event that modern civilization/technology/structure collapses?
- What are your religious beliefs?
- Do you honestly expect to be married by the age of thirty? Do you want to?
- Do you listen to Music? If you do, how often? What's your least favorite genre of music? If you don't like that genre of music, do you at least understand why others do? (Be logical and respect the opinions of others, please >_>)

TSC
- In the same vein as the second Reality question, what is your screen name supposed to say about you, if anything?
- Who on the site do you have a bit of a grudge against, either because of records or socially?
- You hear mentioning of Sonic Pocket Adventure, Sonic '06, or Chaotix in chat, and see the games being dissed. Do you know squat about the games, and do you comment on it (regardless of if you know anything)?
- Shuffle charts are up! Do you weep, rejoice, complain, or simply not care?
- What is your moral opinion on ROMs?
- Do you have certain cliques of people you talk to here more than others? Who?
- Who do you consider to be your competition?
- Do you care for hacks and fan games? If so, do you browse the Internet occasionally for new ones, or just follow whichever ones TSCers obsess about most?
- Assume you and three other TSCers somehow become able to live each other's lives for a day. Which three do you live as, and why?

Fan Fiction (Don't start crying, it's not anything ridiculous. :P It's still questions about personality.)
- Assume you are given the ability to use any five of the following items at will, each of which will last 20 seconds and can't be rapid-fire used repeatedly without a minute's break or so:
  • Speed Sneaker
  • Invincible
  • Rocket Sneaker
  • Grow
  • Shrink
  • Change monitor with Knuckles icon
  • Fire Shield
  • Water Shield
  • Electric Shield
  • Clock (assume it's functional, unlike in Sonic CD)
No 1UPs, sorry. Which would you like, why, and what would you do with them?
- In a twist of fate that could only happen to a TSCer, you find a Chaos Emerald. Ignoring your Score, Ring, and Perfect Bonuses, what do you do with it, whether for fun or serious matters? (I strongly advise against selling/giving it away lest the government or some terrorist get it, but hell, it's a fake fanfic, do what you please)
- After the above question, you played enough Sonic Adventure 2 to know that the emeralds can be used as magnets to locate one another, you smart cookie. You find them all; what would you do with them now?
- After the above question, aliens invade your hometown and start blowing things up for an unknown reason. You have the power to do whatever you want; how do you react?

genus' Gallery of WTF
- You're a serial killer. What group of people do you kill, and why?
- All of a sudden while you're vacationing in Bermuda, you realize you left your pilot light and stereo on, and that just weeks ago you got a souped up insurance policy that covers explosions. What do you do?
- You just killed a man for an unknown reason, and need to get rid of his body. Where do you go to hide the body, and why?
- You are visited by the deity of your choice, and told you will be granted the power to restore life at will if you murder your favorite person, who you can never bring back. Do you?
- You decide to kill yourself. How do you do it, and why?
- You're working in an eyeglass factory as a trained optometrist, filling an expensive custom order from a nearsighted and affluent client, when without warning his left and right eyes explode and he's rushed to the hospital. Your boss tells you you have to get the money for the glasses and your tip, and to deliver the box for laughs. How do you get him to cough up his due?
- What's the best thing you've never done?

Okay, now start spilling everything that you never wanted us to hear. I'm sure other people will have even more ideas for questions, so don't be surprised by anything.

Just read the red lines.

<Da1> ...I'm confused, I thought everyone was Rolken? :S
<oRPG> No everyone is cybrax
<oRPG> Who is rolken
<Thorn> k, in accordance with your fake chat, I demand that Rolken run a mike vs. dan tourney
<oRPG> Who is married to flyby who is really cybrax
<mike89> X)
<oRPG> who is really rolken meaning he is married to himself
<Da1> o_O
<MaxFirestorm> XD
<Da1> O_o
<Thorn> meaning he's doing things to himself *throws up*
<mike89> actually thorn that'd be pretty epic
<Da1> O_O
<oRPG> HAHA @ line ordering

...you guys read every line, didn't you? Ah well, at least it's at mike's expense and not mine. Anyway, let's face it. Several of us received the name of Mike or Dan at birth, and not until coming here did we realize that it is the indication of a special power dwelling deep within one's body, given either from God or through magic, allowing for a mastery of the Sonic way. Or something.

Anyway, since mike wrote a TSC fic about a Mike vs. Dan tourney (and since I was still new when he wrote it, so I was elimiated early and want to redeem myself), I suggest that we make it happen, and it seems like mike89's on board with this as well. I mean, it'd involve half of the site. :P Why we're posting so early is because we need two things:
- Interest from people named Mike and Dan
- A judge (or judges) not named Mike or Dan

I've heard many people casually mentioning in chat that they'd want to try running a tourney, or that they don't like how mike89 and I are running ours. If you think you can step up and design a tourney from scratch -- please don't wing it as you go >_> -- consider hosting this one so you don't need to ask for participants, as they should be expressing interest below if they want in. That being said, we do still wanna keep some general rules down before you start designing alone or with a group:
- This isn't "Mike vs. Dan Sonic 1/2/3&K Tourney" or "Mike vs. Dan Handheld Tourney". Cover as much as possible; there's Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, and GameGear official games, as well as some awesome fan games and hacks. If it's Sonic, easily accessible to all, and recordable without making massive files, it should be okay.
- Make it last. We need several rounds, so keep variation on the challenges and plan weeks in advance. Consider team relays as a way to really test the skill accompanying each name. Try to avoid eliminations, as we want this to be a competiton between names rather than finding the best of each name.

So far, these people want to play:

Tournament Central / Tournament 1/2: More testing (Winner: SBW)
« on: August 21, 2007, 10:40:36 am »
Quote from: yse
What I'll need:
* Volunteers from each existing subsite to run tournaments in their area of expertise

So, um, yeah. MK and RPG aren't making any moves on TUSC's behalf, so I'm picking up the slack again. Despite the fact that TUSC's probably gonna be deleted due to lack of interest on the part of TSCers, I'm trying anyway. I'm basically looking for eight people who aren't total 2D Sonic gods who think they might compete against other amateurs, knowing that there likely won't be total blowouts of n00b vs. pro. 2D's the basis yet again, as with yse's tournament, but seeing as this is a "TUSC" tournament I'll be throwing in some unofficial mods because any moron can memorize the official release's layouts after a while. Also, it won't all entirely be based on playing the games with in-game restrictions such as "get this many rings in this much time"; I've got some different ideas that will hopefully keep things interesting. I'll give more details when I see some interest.

Oh, and I will be doing eliminations k >_>, as people who fall too far behind in the standings tend to get bitchy. :P

Agan, so, um, yeah, volunteers plz.

Competition Central / Sonic Olympics Approaching; Any Interest?
« on: May 31, 2007, 05:18:23 pm »
The Olympics are coming, and RPG and I were looking to recruit three more people for a team. mike89's retired, and we can't afford to get Aitamen a plane ticket to a place with an Internet connection. So we need to sift through the dregs of TSC less-famous members on TSC for teammates.

After the fiasco two years ago, a team under TSC's name wouldn't be welcomed well. So we're looking to get the team registered under TUSC. Unfortunately, we're 79 members short of qualifying, so we need anyone reading this to submit at least one stat on TUSC regardless of their interest in the Olympics. Those who want to participate should say so here as well as submit one stat. Or, if your nick is stanski, you can say yes by submitting one record in TUSC's Sonic 2 Prototypes bracket, to kill RPG's 100%.

Hope to get some help. :P

Emerald Challenges / Pics to come... eventually.
« on: May 15, 2007, 02:01:12 pm »
For those of you who have submitted to the various challenges, please be pateint and wait for your pics for just another day or so. It's the end of my senior year of high school, and things are getting hectic. Work, homework, exams... just wait for it to blow over, please. I'll get back on things when I'm feeling less stressed.

Emerald Challenges / More Challenges on the Way!
« on: May 07, 2007, 11:00:52 pm »
We have more challenges! Note that they are not finished yet. As of now there are no rewards, and some challenges do not yet have limits set (i.e. Finish in ___ instead of Finish in 5:00 or so). Nevertheless we intive you to be our beta testers.

Plus, if you pine for the days of RPG's Mural Challenges, there's a profane, cheesy fanfic for you too, although you needn't read it if you don't care to (please don't, I might've embarassed myself).

Also yeah, if you noticed that our board is number 133 at the moment, it is because my challenges are 10% more 1337 than the next leading brand.

Hax0ring / Sonic Turbo

Grab v1.0 here.

For those of you who didn't follow this thing on TSC, it's a lil' Sonic 2 mod I've been working on since November.

Hack Features:
  • Level Design: Anybody else getting sick of seeing hacks with ASM out the ass, but the same levels that you've had in the original since the early 90's? I am, so I'm working out new layouts as I go along. Over half of the acts are modded right now.
  • Palletes: Every level palette has been redone. Simple as that.
  • Physics: Sonic runs faster than in the original Sonic 2, making scaling walls a breeze. Tails runs a bit slower, but jumps higher, making for a shortcut here and there (which level design will eventually reflect). Try Tails' jump off of a downslope to shoot forward like a rocket.
  • Music: This is where things get a bit buggy, but almost any change is good change when you've heard the songs since 1992. All level themes have been repleaced with music ports.
  • Art: Art changes are very minor. Item boxes are a hybrid with Chaotix-styled items. Some floor tiles have been drawn over just a tiny bit to assure good lineups with other tiles.

Level Select: TSC's Birthday (yyyy/mm/dd) (4 digits)
  • Be careful selecting levels that aren't in the normal progression, as they're not finished yet. You can see the palettes, though.
14 Continues: Elite
Other codes to come when there's a real use for them (although they're programmed in as of now).

Updates to come (hopefully) regularly.
Credit to R. Solaris for his water slide object, which he/she made publicly available on SGMC's Forums.
Credit to Tweaker for a music port.

Okay, RPG and I (MK's cool database thingy to come soon) have spent quite some time hooking up the charts and whatnot, and, of course, props to Rolken for managing TSC and integrating subsites, Gerbil for his server doohickey, and everyone else.

Feel free to poke around, but until everything's stable, don't press the Submit button on anything but forum posts, and keep those forum posts out of TUSC News for now.  Stats are still a bit borked, due to RPG and I making most of the charts before Rolk's Site Management Guide went up (we're close, we just need to sort out Totals/Overall, and actually beat Flicky Panic to make charts), so we're asking that you not submit stats until we give the go-ahead.  Updates to come as events warrant them.

Also don't question RPG's, MK's, or I's power lest you suffer our wrath... or something.  Eh, we'll make asses of ourselves as always.

UPDATE 1: Don't ask about the ?s everywhere.  I can't get rid of 'em.  I'm not the smartest admin around, I suppose.  Also, RPG wants me to make it known that DIY and Time Attacked are good to go.  Still, please, no submissions yet.

UPDATE 2: But I can get rid of them...

Rules Revisions / Sonic CD Score/Rings + Time Warp: Yay or Nay?
« on: April 09, 2007, 02:14:11 pm »
I'd kind of assumed that it was another one of those understood rules that everyone was using Time Attack mode for everything, until I had a seemingly perfect Palmtree Panic 2 ring record toppled about an hour after setting it. After going back and reviewing all of the charts, other large gaps became obvious, like Stardust Speedway 2.

I couldn't care either way, but something needs to be put down in the rules, as it's clear to me that the majority of Ring stats seem to have been set in Time Attack mode aside from a sparse few.

Pros of Time Warp
  • More interesting competition
  • Tougher competition

Cons of Time Warp
  • Rules would need to allow Debugger level select, since regular level select is borked
  • Non-PC version users would need to create a save at every level due to aforementioned borked level select: Time Warp after level select returns you to title screen

Okay, seeing as S3&K Special Stage divisions were just shot down, other Special stage divisions deserve mentioning as well.  Even though ks8 brought this up several times, it always seems to be the same few people that post in his topic.  So this topic is for discussion of any other Special Stage that might merit inclusion.  Simple stuff, give a yes/no for each game and a why.  If there's some stipulation you imagine needs to go along with the game (e.g. divisions that carry no weight or whatever), state it.  To the best of my knowledge, here's the list and brief descriptions (yes, I get to vouch my opinion too).

Sonic 1: As far as I know, Rolken already said in chat that he oculdn't think of an argument not to have this other than "it's frustrating".  I have to agree.
Sonic 3D Genesis: This is another one where my reason to condone divisions is that I can't think of a reason not to.
Sonic 3D Saturn: I'm sort of on the fence about this one.  On the plus side, these are some really great Special stages, in the style of the Sonic 2 stages that we already track.  On the down side, it would take forever to get to the stage you want to play if you only want to practice one stage.  I say this should be open, yet weightless.  Since half of the forum hasn't played this stage, there's an excellent vid on YouTube here.
Sonic 3D PC: I'm pro this one because you can make save files to return to the stage you want to play.  It's also in Sonic 2 style, although significantly different than the Saturn ones.  Anyone with a GFaqs/GS account can use the demo game here to play the first Special Stage.  If added, I suppose a rule about the set Frame Rate would be in effect.
Sonic Pocket Adventure: More Sonic 2 madness, 'nuff said.
Knuckles Chaotix: Probably could be added, as there's nothing particularly "wrong" with these stages.  If they're unfamiliar, get a ROM and check them before making an opinion.
Sonic Advance: See above, only now you can move in an extra dimesnion.
Sonic Advance 2: Worthy of adding, it's built like Sonic CD, only with a different objective.
Sonic Advance 3: Essentially Sonic Advance 1.
Sonic Rush: There's a lot of talk about the "pause trick", but since we run on an honor system anyway, I say add it.
Sonic Heroes: ks8 addressed this already.
Any Game Gear game: I hate the things, and I'd say no even if I didn't.

Rules Revisions / New Games Are Up, But OLD Rules Remain Ambiguous
« on: January 27, 2007, 05:55:23 pm »
Maybe I'm just crazy, but there's still a few things lying around that we should really get settled within the next... *looks at main page to see when the next excuse for a rule update is* ...few hours.  Anybody who's bumped into something he/she wasn't sure of, please post it here, whether you found an answer or not.

Here's my two sense:

S3&K:
  • I had always assumed that you could end an act anywhere but needed to start at the correct start for a character (i.e. no three-second IC2).  The newest IC2K record uses Sonic's start.  Can this somehow be written into a rule to make it clear that it's legal?
  • From what I've seen, rings uncovered by the Act 1 finish sign count towards either act.  This really needs to be said...
  • I've been told that a Launch Base 2 shortcut in Sonic & Knuckles Collection is forbidden since it's blocked by invisible walls in the original.  It's already banned as a "functional change in level layout", but since it's an invisible solidity object that moved and not the level layout, it could use mentioning.
  • Balloon Park's balloon-per-lap rule establishes Freestyle, but disallows a perfectly acceptable method.  I wouldn't begin to know the correct wording, though.

Sonic R:
  • Grand Prix and Time Attack are both acceptable modes for Three/Single Lap records.

Knuckles Chaotix:
  • If Stage Select is enabled, pausing during a screen fadeout needs to be banned, as the Stage Select also activates a Debug that will let the screen fade while the timer remains paused.

S1:
  • Simply add something after the title on the rules page that separates it from S1GBA.  I figure this was gonna be done anyway, but eh.

Rivals:
  • If you get an opponent stuck, the cap on whacking him should be, say, five times or so.  Sky Park's my main concern, you can get a Rival stuck on the strongman bells and beat him to kingdom come for eternity, at 500 points a hit.

That's all I remember, although I'm sure there's other things we hit on in the last few months.  Please say anything that needs to be said.

General Sonic / Attn: All with '06 and Vidding Abilities
« on: January 02, 2007, 04:19:12 pm »
(Alt topic title: Who Wants to Make some GFaqs Members Eat Their Words?)

Simple request here.
Stop by the '06 boards on GFaqs if you haven't already.  Ten hate topics to every topic about actually PLAYING the game.  Can we shut them all down?  Hell no.  Can we show them the shitty controls, a lame-ass camera, and abusive power-ups don't kill the game entirely?  Maybe, we haven't tried yet; odds are "no" but I say we try anyway.  Do we care about GFaqs anyway?  ...meh.

I'm proposing that anyone who can make a vid, no matter the quality *hides Chaotix vids* should vid a few of their favorite levels.  We collect the footage, take snippets of various levels and characters, and compile it into one vid.  Nobody has to spill their best strats, it's all just showing that we CAN play the game, and to hell with the excuses that everybody harps on.  The best part is, once we make a vid and post it on GFaqs, people can say whatever they care to, and their opinion becomes next to meaningless for anybody else.  People who haven't played the game can watch the vid and make their OWN opinions instead of hearing a bunch of crap.

I know this is a long shot.  I know it'll never work.  But why not try?  It's an excuse to make that YouTube account for TSC Spaceshippers/Admins that sommebody proposed, and a way for us to reach an audience without words.
