you suck!!!
It's not my fault that i can't get any other decent recording devices
my point is that i didn't lie about skill. also you are using an example to other players who think on doing the same. Liar my British bull crap
i didn't know so you better Shut, Sit down, have a think, and then a one big argument with the moderators.

Mike89 and Sadisticmystic i'am arresting you on suspision of member misconduct, you do not have to see but it may harm your defence when mentioned anything you rely on in court. Any you do say may be given in evidence.
I hope your sever blows up again

I really, really want to see you lead a prosecution.  What with your wonderful articulation and ability to put together a cohesive argument, you'd have the whole legal system trembling in your wake.

I thought all levels had a limit of rings correct me if I'm wrong.

They all have a limit in terms of the time you can acheive too; it's a question of whether it's too easy to reach that limit.

I managed to save the file.

9.5MB is a bit excessive for a 1:00 video, but there isn't much I can see done about it.  H264 doesn't save any space, DivX saves about 1MB but drops to 5 frames per second some ways in, TSCC gives 122MB which is the uncompressed size, and WMV doesn't work because it only wants to render a 4:3 aspect, when it needs to be 3:2.

Such a fast-paced video, with 16 DTDs and an R-boost crammed into so little time, tends to do that.

I did try to compress it but framerate loss makes it pretty hard to watch.  I'll maybe naff about with other codecs some time post-Christmas.

Have a great one everyone by the way!

Yeah, that's the bunny.

I'm gonna do a major recording session over the holidays, any requests for zone videos?

Anyone willing to lend some techniques/tips/ and such. Espeially with advance 2 the only act i can do ok is the first one e_e;(got a time of around 40 secs)

*discuss*?

Okay, Advance 2.

Firstly, you have to learn the game.  There are various little things to the engine, like if you jump on the exact point of a slope change you go further/faster/higher, or if you're jumping out of water at speed you'll go majorly high when you break the surface.  An important technique is jumping straight up by hitting the button at the crest of a half-pipe, definitely one to practice.

Next you have to master the art of keeping the boost going once you've established it.  This is absolutely essential for competitive times in Advance 2, and the only way to get good is to practice.  Best tips I can think of currently are to keep jumps flatish as severe angles can sometimes cause stop-dead, and to use speed boosters as much as possible.

You also have to know the fastest route through each level to get the most out of it.  If there's already a video of a fast run of that level, watch and memorise.  If not, play that level to death until you find the fast route (and when I say to death, I've spent hours on one act figuring it out - Egg Utopia 1 had me trying for ages).

It's worth knowing all the moves of every character too - it's particularly important you master the air dash if you want to get good times with Sonic.

Can I suggest you first watch NintenDan's video of Leaf Forest 1 (Sonic) - it's got all the stuff I've mentioned in it done pretty much perfectly.

Good luck!

Douglas

ps You'll have to ask RPG for boss tips, he destroys me at them :)

Competition Central / possible book idea...

I don't know, the whole whoring out strats thing concerns me. I mean, a magician never reveals his secrets y'know? Sure magicians (i.e. champs) trade tricks between themselves but the general public is never to know.

Okay so we're not magicians but still, a large part of playing sonic competitively is having the uninitiated worship you as a god. Once they know how we do it, all of a sudden we lose our power!!

Sorry, but for me the idea doesn't quite work. Maybe a rough 'tips' guide, but revealing strats gets a big fat thumbs down from me :(

I dunno, Ninty's Leaf Forest 1 vid still makes me go "Man, he's good"

I haven't seen any proof of such either.

Remember though, if you think someone's cheating just because their times are insanely fast, there's a good chance you're wrong. :)
...yeah.

And believe me, I've had it happen to me before. I haven't complained; I just take it as an incentive to do better. Just ask douglas. He beat a couple of Sonic Advance 2 records I obtained 15 minutes (likely sooner, as that's just the period between table updates) after I submitted them.

Some people don't have the kit to do recordings on some platforms, so demanding a video doesn't really seem fair.  Anyway, it doesn't really matter whether you believe it or not, it's whether the site admins do.  There's no proof Skylights has done anything wrong, so shush.

Also, spelling, punctuation and grammar are your friends.  You don't help your cause by ranting incoherently.

Been working on Egg Utopia 1 since I did that video, because I think I've found a couple of route tweaks.  I already had the Knux one, saw Spinny had beaten Amy as well and went for that and got it pretty quick fortunately :)

Those times aren't great, I think sub 1:20 is possible.  Will get back to ya.

For a fast time on this boss:

Air dash to the extreme right at the start, jump and land on the edge of the boss, spindash to damage him.  It's damned fiddly though.

Wouldn't that encourage people not to post records unless they were really good though?  I'd rather see lots of times and lots of competition personally.

Egg Utopia 1 - Tails - 1:31:68
Pretty poor run in places (1:08 and 1:17 come to mind), but meh.  Shows y'all the route I use.  Actually, looking again sub 1:25 is more than possible, maybe sub 1:15 for Sonic.

Warning: it's nearly 15 meg, the quality's iffy and the sound's out of sync.  I blame VBA.

Anyway, any more requests?

Quote
Just wondering. How do you record your vids? and for that matter, how do you play Sonic Advance 2? On Gameboy or emulator? I find it extremly difficult to airdash rapidly in succession on the keyboard, but then again, most people find it difficult to airdash rapidly on the gameboy, so I guess like anything, it probably just takes some getting used to.

Emulator for TAing.  Air dash breaks my hand either way but my keyboard's pretty nifty and I find it easier.  I've been recording vids using the in-built thingummy in VBA using Divx 5.3.1 for encoding, but seeing the results it's given I'm thinking I should get Hyper Cam or something.  What does everyone else use?

Once I'm done with Sonic Advance for the time being (and am no longer sick of Advance 2, which will probably take a few weeks), I WILL take IP2 back! That's MY zone, hear?

Please don't, I really don't want to have to do another run of it.  Ever.

Work...as in, time attack work? :P

Heh :)  Sadly not, been far too busy this year.  The other forums I've been involved with, I get lost if I don't check regularly, whereas TAing I can just pick up when I'm bored/have free time/procrastinating.

Quote
But I do mind if you are cheating, because, well then you obviously don't deserve those records!

Although proof isn't required, I suggest you try to capture at least a few snapshots of some of your record times. It's not necessary, but I do have to admit that you surprised me myself quite a few times with some of your new times! At least this way, I can know that I am being beaten honestly, rather then by a cheater (like Dale...)

I had some uncompressed vids that I couldn't get to compress properly, and which I lost in a hard disk upgrade.  I'll maybe do a recording session this weekend, although I'm usually rubbish when it's recording (too much pressure!).  Any requests for that and/or screens?
