Rules Revisions / Max Time Bonus in SCDS Scores/Extra
« on: December 02, 2010, 02:25:21 am »
So I was browsing gamefaqs.com's Sonic Colors DS board, when I noticed this topic:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/997172-sonic-colors/57271446

which is very bad for this game's score/extra divisions. Basically, if you press start the exact frame you complete the level, you can hit restart, and this will reset the timer to what it was when you started the level, but you'll start the level at the finished screen, with the maximum time bonus. I tested it on PW-M2, and got a score of 36000. I haven't tested one of the stages, so I don't know if it works on them or not. Regardless, if this isn't disallowed, that basically means that extra is screwed.

Barring the rate at which you are submitting highly skilled statistics to the site from discussion, I find this stat pretty interesting because, to my knowledge, nobody has publicly made available a .giz describing the route. Please describe how you got this stat.

seeing as this is sonic rush and you'd have to go through walls to get such a time, it seems much more likely that he meant 0:32 instead of 0:23

General Sonic / THE FINAL OUTCOME
« on: August 29, 2008, 08:27:10 pm »
So we all know that there's three Sonic games coming out. How do you think they'll turn out? Given the known information about them, I expect their fates to be pretty similar to the following:

Sonic Unleashed - will be a pile of garbage. It will follow the same exact fate of the past 3 "main" Sonic the Hedgehog games; when announced, it is met with hesitant optimism, then Sega shows a bunch of screenshots and 4 minutes of gameplay of all the best parts of the game we will ever see which results in people growing severely desperate for the game, then they start letting it drop that the game is really a piece of crap. The demo for Sonic 06 drastically cut off most remaining interest in the game, evidenced by the fact that only 50-60,000 copies of the game were sold in 2006, and if Unleashed continues the tradition of releasing an expo demo, then we will surely see our consoles running the game at 15 FPS. Then, the game will come out. It is then, that we will know that the game is not only merely a generic gameplay scenario, but also unfinished. The Wii/PS2 version will outsell the 360/PS3 version only because it is on a Nintendo console, and not necessarily because it is a better game.

Sonic Chronicles - is a game that only the hardcore Sonic fans will get, with the exception of people waiting for a new JRPG to play and happen to mistake Sonic Chronicles as one. It will incorporate as many Sonic the Hedgehog characters as the game possibly can feasibly do, and incorporate characters that have nothing to do with the basic Sonic the Hedgehog premise, and some existing characters will suffer from being incorporated into the new and dangerous world with the new characters that have nothing to do with Sonic the Hedgehog. It will also suffer us all with massive amounts of fandom explosions until the inevitable death of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic and the Black Knight - will be the best game out of all three of these. In no way will it be a classic Sonic game, in no way is the concept familiar to the series, and in no way should Sonic be holding a sword. It will not revitalize the franchise, nor will it set an example for future Sonic games to come. It probably won't even reach an average score of 7.5-8/10. But here's the sad reality - it will be a game. And it will be proud of being a game. It won't be an emulation of what they were supposing a Sonic the Hedgehog game will be like, with pre-determined paths running Sonic around that you dont have to press a button to make happen, a sad depressing knock-off of "what the fans want." It will be its own game, and it will shamelessly flaunt this fact around every time anyone plays it.

Until we break it. Then it'll be a piece of crap.

Beef / Pertaining to my Rush videos
« on: April 20, 2008, 03:30:24 pm »
Righto, since there seems to be debate on this topic, I think it's in the best interest to fire up a thread.

It's been a long time since most people have tried DS emulation, but I've been actively keeping up with it as best I can so that I might one day be able to record all of my best runs and submit them as TSC legit stats so that people could see exactly what's going on and not have to rely on a guide or anything like that. At the beginning of the year, I was running the no$ gba DS emulator on a Dell Inspiron 8600 and getting rather fair results. Input was no problem with the help of an Xbox 360 wired controller, it was running on auto and happened to be running at normal game time except with lots and lots of frameskip, but it was still not good enough to me because I couldn't accurately play it with its like 10 frames a second. Running it at 100% for either Sonic Rush or Rush Adventure made the emulator run at like 40-60%, so that didn't help and I have just been patiently waiting for something to happen ever since. (no$ gba doesn't seem to update anymore :( )

Then I got a brand new computer and tried it out again. And, well, it seems to me like the framerate issue I had was completely obliterated. It runs really smoothly. Infact, if anything, it runs BETTER than the DS. Seriously. Ghost runs don't lag the emulator like they do on the DS in Sonic Rush. Also compare the difference in time from the video time to the ingame time in 8 minutes of Dead Line 2. The thing in my new videos is that they aren't as smooth as what I'm claiming they are, and the reason for that is because my screen recorder goes at 15 FPS. I haven't figured out if I can change that or not :(

Now some think this is breaking the rules, so lets see:

Quote
Gamesharks, similar cheat devices, and ROM save states must not be used, nor any functions on the emulator, such as slowing down the speed of the game. Frankly it doesn't make for much competition.

Unofficial emulators that do not replicate correctly the original gameplay are not allowed. This currently spans DS, Dreamcast and any newer non portable consoles, and more.

- With this new computer it is actually impossible for me to slow down the speed of the game. Like I said, the 100% speed option runs it a lot faster than it normally should. The Auto speed/2 and speed/10 options don't work from what I can tell, and I can't use those anyway and get that kind of synchronized sound on Sonic Rush because there's no replay function.

- I don't know about you (you probably haven't tried under my conditions), but this feels like precisely the same game to me. I completely understand this plight if I was using iDeaS; I was like, going through walls and crap on that emulator playing the tutorial level in Sonic Rush Adventure. Seriously, the only conditions that aren't the same from no$ gba to my DS is that the language setting on the computer is set to Spanish for some reason. I haven't bothered to figure out how to change that because it could help learning a few Spanish words here and there for the future >_> <_<

Some people feel that submitting videos/stats done on any emulator is not ethical, in that doing it on its platform, in this case the DS, is just better. We are the same group of people that heartily uses .giz files as much as possible and plays basically all genesis/gamegear games on the computer because it's more practical and makes it easy to prove other people's times and such. I do not see why this line of thinking has to be different for this case.

There's also the opinion that because not everyone has a computer as shiny and bright as mine that while submitting the videos are not a problem, submitting them as TSC stats is. I could understand how that might be a case if nobody would ever have a chance at getting a new computer. It's like saying nobody in Japan or America should have Super Smash Brothers Brawl because Europe or Australia don't have the option of getting it either. It will be there for them in the future, and that shouldn't stop other people from enjoying it now.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I would like to hear everyones so this can be settled.

if... someone does submit for SRA extra...

this story will get somewhat chaotic.

It was a bright day! The sun's beamed down through the heavens, and the celestial choirs were singing. Everyone would do the right thing. Cream sat in a field dense with grasses and flowers of all kinds: roses, violets, daisies are just a miniscule portion of the beauty of the field.

Suddenly, Cream's eyes stared into the distance, fixated upon a character moving through the fields.

"Who... Who is that?"

Why, it was Marine! And she brought a picnic basket! How nice! Cream skipped happily along down the field and they greeted each other by merrily holding hands and dancing about the picnic basket.

But wait! "Cheeeeeese!" Cream called out.

With a flutter of the baby wings, Cheese the Chao flittered forth fabulously! In its hand was a magnificent apple pie, freshly baked from Vanilla's kitchen.

"So, what are we waitin' for?" Marine shouted. "Let's eat!"

Spelling and grammar errors were few. Good use of alliteration. B+

Wikkity! / INFALLIBLE LOGICS
« on: January 30, 2008, 06:36:49 pm »
So I watched last night's Colbert Report. It pertained to Conan O'Brien claiming that he made Mike Huckabee with the Iowa caucuses, with the following logic:

O'Brien breathed life into Colbert's carreer (Obrien made Colbert)...
Colbert breathed life into Huckabee's campaign (Colbert made Huckabee)...
therefore Obrien made Huckabee.

Then Jon Stewart then stepped in and then added onto O'Brien's logic that Jon Stewart made Obrien so therefore Jon Stewart made Huckabee. Thing is, this awoke a thought deep inside me and reminded me of another amazing piece of logic about money that I was bored with in 12th grade and decided to pursue for a few hours of thought.

LET US BEGIN

To start, we have 3 equations that everyone should be familiar with.

Knowledge = Power (The man that knows that orange juice does not mix with toothpaste will be better off than the man that doesn't know that)
Time = Money (This is more like Time = a valuable thing, but money will be a good substitute)

And this handy physics equation:

Power = Work/Time

SO WITH SUBSTITUTION

Knowledge = Work/Money

So in other words, the more valuable you get and the less work you do, the stupider you become! Switching the equation around makes it become:

Money = Work/Knowledge

Which makes it so that the more Knowledge you have, the more work you have to do to be valuable. This is one of the most truthful statements of life if you think about it. It just goes to show that education is a system that is meant to make everyone useless to everyone else but themselves.

So then I discussed this with a teacher of fine logics (my english teacher [my calculus teacher was scary]) and then he and his cynic mind added that knowledge is measured by the data you know over the data you are expected to know. He himself complained a lot to the administration of my school on how they continuously were lowering that bar of information students are expected to know so that it would seem like the people from my school was the smartest in the state, but that's another story. In summary, he added another equation:

Knowledge = Data/Expectations

SO WITH MORE SUBSTITUTION

Data/Expectations = Work/Money

And one quick mixup to get money by itself:

(Work * Expectations) / Data = Money

So clearly, what this is saying is that the less data you actually know compared the the data you're expected to know, THE MORE VALUABLE YOU ARE AS A PERSON! It's true! Watch Office Space. It is clearly an equation that models good ol' American values and economic prosperity! Oh, wait, our economy kinda sucks right now... I wonder why?

ALSO PLEASE SHARE YOUR OWN INFALLIBLE LOGICS

I MUST HEAR MORE OF THESE

AND I ALREADY KNOW THE ONE SAYING "GIRLS ARE EVIL"

I MUST KNOW DIFFERENT ONES

Beef / Integrity of Future Competition
« on: January 18, 2008, 11:02:33 pm »
I am worried about this. And no; this isn't about about whether or not a future Sonic the Hedgehog game is going to be good or not. This is about whether the competition in a future Sonic the Hedgehog game is going to be good or not.

Now what exactly do I mean by this? Well allow me to share a little bit of my experience with competing in games. When I first came to the site, I was only interested in one game - Sonic Rush. That is the game that had pretty much built me up to be the competitor that I am now, thanks to various tussles with Ben and Crowbar and SDM. However, the thing that was the most exciting about competing in Sonic Rush in general was that every record you were able to gain was important. You could take the Dead Line 1 Time and it'd be just as satisfactory as landing the Water Palace 2 Score.

Now of course, there was a minority within all of those charts - the Boss scores. They are easily maxed out and are pretty much "gimmie" records. They don't serve any purpose competition-wise except to increase your overall percentage. But it didn't matter; everyone was so busy trying to beat each other elsewhere that it didn't matter.

So then a year later I delved into SSR, and I'm going to say that the competition hasn't been as fun as Rush, but it's still in place. The thing that annoys me about competing in the game though is this - nobody is after the missions that matter (Mission 1's). Instead, people concentrate instead on trying to take one of the shorter records or go for maxing out a particular mission. The most fun competition I had was when I was going back-and-forth with Fadeddreams over Night Palace 1, but of course by my luck he gets banned for "testing the system" and then going to gamefaqs and saying that people can essentially cheat the system here and not get caught, but gets caught in the process of attempting trying to see if he could not get caught.

Now, before that, the Sonic 06 charts were put up. Thing is, nobody really cared about the making of them. Bosses, times, and missions were all clumped together, so when it came time to start competing there, the entire weight of the chart was all shifted to the missions. This was at a time when Very Hard mode was non-existant either, so to look at the chart and to think that all of the competition was weighted on the 66% of the chart that was missions, it was pretty depressing to see and try to compete in (20 second loading screens every 2 seconds for some missions hooray!). Then again.. it is Sonic 06.

But now let me talk about Sonic Rush Adventure.

The thing I liked seeing about the way the competition in this game sprung up is that in about 2-3 months, there were more people submitting stats in the game than every other game that came out after Sonic Riders. Now what annoyed the crap out of me even more is that nobody competes where it actually matters - where it's actually fun.

Let me put it this way. This is the history of the first level in the game for me, Plant Kingdom 1.

http://www.soniccenter.org/members/skylights/sonic_rush_adventure/times/plant_kingdom_1/sonic

This is my Hidden Island 1.

http://www.soniccenter.org/members/skylights/sonic_rush_adventure/times/hidden_island_1/sonic

I don't know what this tells you, but it tells me that people want the Hidden Island 1 record a whole lot more than the Plant Kingdom 1 record. Why? Probably because it's on a much easier scale in terms of level design. It's not as significant as one of the actual levels in terms of bragging weight... but it's a record that we allow people to compete for. And there are more of these than actual levels.

Now here's the other thing that annoys me about Sonic Rush Adventure competition. Look at this.

http://www.soniccenter.org/rankings/sonic_rush_adventure/scores

Over 80% of the chart can be maxed out. It's ridiculous. Basically, over time as people max out records, you could essentially gain 80%, possibly 90% of the score division just by doing as good as the game would let you do.

That isn't even touching this part.

http://www.soniccenter.org/rankings/sonic_rush_adventure/extra

There has been absolutely no competition here at all. There's been Thorn and I filling in our charts and a few minor skirmishes and RPG posting weird times that I continue to wonder if he subtracted the time he got at the end from the time that was given at the beginning so that it would seem like time was counting up instead of down, which is not how the charts there happen to work. But seriously, these seemed like a good idea at the start... it's just that nobody seems to care about them at all. Personally, I see it as personal 0-score-division material when I feel like it.

So now with those three points being made about Sonic Rush Adventure competition, it just seems to me like nobody cares about the fun competition anymore. Sure, there's an official site, but it sucks and only updates once a day and sometimes just shows me script instead of what I want, not to mention there's no chance of me knowing who the heck Cloud is if I want to find out how he went sub-30 on PK1. Perhaps the official site itself is also a contributor to the problem this game has, but it is certainly true that there is just too much useless competition going on in our Sonic Rush Adventure. It's like Cyberscore where we basically have divisions for everything the game can calculate for competition without concerns for what kind of competitive integrity it will happen to turn into.

Now what I am not saying is to delete half of the Rush Adventure charts. It'd be nice, but the damage is basically done and it just feels like there's nothing that can be done about the competitive integrity of that game. What I am saying is to take greater caution at what charts make up a games "competitive integrity" (if you don't mind me using that label a million times). Gimmie-records are nice but they should not be the basis of a games competition and as a result out-weigh all of the records that have a significant effect on who is the leader of a division. Why? It's not fun. It doesn't create a challenge for anyone except for the person that's trying to tie the record, and when 50% of the game is about tying someone else's record, well, it just doesn't feel like you're doing anything special by competing in it. It's like a bird who's wings are clipped. It's boring.

There was some talk about them in the chatroom, so this is how it would probably go. There's 10 characters, 3 "levels" for each, which include 5 stages each. All of the stages for each character are different, so it'd be necessary to include them. Time is displayed after a match as "x minutes x seconds" without centiseconds, so times would be Genesis-like in that sense.

The problem I forsee is that there might be too many charts that nobody would ever fully submit to. But if you're able to make a full submission for the score charts, getting a full time chart shouldn't be much harder.

Edit: Actually now that I play past the first "level" for one character, the stages aren't really any different from the others when it comes to a specific character :( Perhaps it wouldn't matter what level of difficulty you play it on and would cut the theoretical charts down by 1/3

Before you get any ideas on what I'm talking about, here's the scenario. You hit a Chaos Emerald box and enter the special stage. After you complete it, you emerge from the special stage under these conditions:

-All of your rings have been removed. (You have 000 rings.)
-All objects in the zone have been refreshed. (It's like a brand new zone!)
-The Chaos Emerald box has been replaced with a ring box that gives you an extra 10 rings.

The question here is this: Is it a valid strategy to finish a special stage in order to gain 10 extra rings to add to a ring record? It's a pain in the ass, however this only affects 6 zones and it isn't quite the same as starting off with all the rings you entered the special stage with ala Sonic 2 & Knuckles.

Edit: Also worthy to note is that this would allow more flexibility when it comes to manipulating spinners, so I guess this would affect more than just six zones.

Competition Central / The Random .giz Topic
« on: September 07, 2007, 04:12:40 am »
So yeah, I'm tired of making a new topic every time I'm bored and want to share some random thing I found in a Genesis game, so why not make a compilation that everyone can add to! This is generally for random crap that doesn't deserve to be turned into a video and added to the site as well, or my case where the site just hates me and won't accept file transfers at all.

A rundown on how I set up my post:

FILE - the attatchment you need to download if you want to see the trick/run
GAME - what game you need to play the giz in gens+
ZONE - where the giz takes place
INFO - what the giz is about

To start, here's a few you may have seen... and a few you may not have seen! (hint: they're attatchments)

FILE: sb2.giz
GAME: Sonic 1
ZONE: Scrap Brain Act  2
INFO: Ring Attack Trick

This is the full RA .giz I made before ybbun told me about another trick to get to where the record is now. I promised not to tell that trick though, so this .giz is of a run without that trick. :(

FILE: l1ringsJ.giz
GAME: Sonic 1 (Japanese version)
ZONE: Labyrinth Act 1
INFO: Full Ring Attack

This is a full 107 ring attack of Labyrinth 1, also showing where the extra ring is. I found this on Sonic Mega Collection because that's where I was ring-attacking Sonic 1.

FILE: ht1-kRA.giz
GAME: Sonic 2 & Knuckles
ZONE: Hill Top 1
INFO: Full Ring Attack + Score Attack demonstration

In the first minute is where I show the trick that enables someone to get a score of 90,000+ if repeated a million times, and the rest of it is a ring attack to get the perfect bonus.

FILE: cp2kscore.giz
GAME: Sonic 2 & Knuckles
ZONE: Chemical Plant 2
INFO: Score/Ring Attack

This shows where all 297 rings are located, and how to achieve the 2nd place score. No clue what stanski did to get under 3 minutes total :(

FILE: lr2-kRA.giz
GAME: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
ZONE: Lava Reef Act 2 w/ Knuckles
INFO: Full Ring Attack

A full ring attack of the zone with Knuckles. Props to mike for tipping me off to the beginning part, and I added a little something to the end to make 286 rings. Also note the weird part where Knuckles seems to be running down a wall after I spindash-jump for the ring I missed.

FILE: lr2-klol.giz
GAME: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
ZONE: Lava Reef Act 2 w/ Knuckles
INFO: Random lol

This is what happens if you keep running down the wall in the last .giz. You get into the wall, but it doesn't really seem to help at all :(

FILE: ss-sRA.giz
GAME: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
ZONE: Sky Sanctuary w/ Sonic
INFO: Ring Attack Route

This zone is kind of confusing to RA, but this is the route I used. Shows where the randomly placed 10 box is that Thorn discovered. Run was good up till the boss in which I got hit :( But this at least shows the route!

Feel free to post your own random .giz's!

General Sonic / what is this (pertenance to 3D sonic)
« on: September 04, 2007, 06:51:51 am »
Okay so generally, when I look at 3D sonic, I see 3 groups. The adventure group, which contains the obvious two games that are held in pretty high regards, and then the other three beginning with Heroes which are not held as high for reasons that are debatable. Then there's secret rings, which is in the "just there" class for now because it's an oddball.

So what is this topic about? Well I may have just found an extremely large link in what makes these two adventure games held in such high regards as opposed to the other three.

Tikal.

Tikal graced Adventure 1 with her presence and even Adventure 2 in multiplayer. Heroes, Shadow, and 06 didn't have Tikal!

THIS IS QUITE NOTABLE, IS IT NOT?

THIS MEANS

TO MAKE AN ACCEPTABLE SONIC THE HEDGEHOG GAME IN THE THIRD DIMENSION

YOU MUST MERELY GRACE THE GAME WITH TIKALS PRESENCE!

we need to forward this to sega immediately

FOR THE FUTURE OF SONIC

Competition Central / Mirage Road 1/2 recorded
« on: July 06, 2007, 02:03:40 pm »
I finally had the patience to sit down and try to record something on an emulated Sonic Rush, and as a result I have come up with videos of Mirage Road 1 and Mirage Road 2 with decent video quality, which you can get here. I told myself I would surrender the Mirage Road 2 trick only on video, so here it is :P

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UO49J980
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EQZ64UGR

That being said, I won't be doing any more videos for the time being. You may have noticed the lack of synchronized audio and sound effects in the videos. That's because if I left it there, it would be sped up by about 300%.

While the audio emulation runs perfectly, the emulator only runs Sonic Rush's gameplay at 1/3 of its normal speed, and it runs even slower when you get to a boss battle or special stage. It's a pain in the ass. I tried special stage 2 out and finished it upwards of 15 minutes later with the chaos emerald. Both runs I recorded were actually around 8:30 to complete as well. If there were savestates or the save file didn't delete itself every time I turn on the game, then I wouldn't complain about it as much, but those cases are also apparent.

Case in point, DS emulation needs to get better before I try to make more videos. Once that happens though, I'll have no problem recording almost every route for both characters :0
