TSC Race Night / Re: Race nights so far...
« on: September 28, 2012, 07:42:34 pm »
edit: It'd be nice if we could say "if you aren't ready by x time, the race will start without you" but I don't use SRL enough to know if that's built into the system there.

I have voice on SRL, so I can remove people from the race if they aren't ready by a certain time. This of course implies I'm around, but if you want to do this, I'll make sure I am.

Regarding time, it actually has to be done a lot more specifically than "let's try and get a time where the most people are awake." First of all, who is -actually racing-. Caring about Brits or Aussies makes no difference if none of them are actually racing. Second of all, who does it actually make a difference to. Like I mentioned before, my sleep schedule is flexible as I don't have a job, but there are people that do, get there input first, mine is absolutely irrelevant.

That makes a lot of sense. I say no one here can touch his times, and I'm insulting him.

Seems legit.

The topics been made, people should actually be posting their concerns, criticisms, opinions, and things that have gone well. As such, time for me to post...

Yeah, I'm not doing these anymore. The time sucks for me, but I was still willing to throw out my sleep schedule for a day to add one more to the numbers. Due to other shit going on yesterday, I had to stay up for a full 26 or so hours to participate, and really needed to stay up for another 7 after that because I had stuff lined up for a few hours after the race.

To see only 2 other people show up got me real mad, and I lost all motivation to even race and ended up falling asleep with controller in hand. Meaning I also missed something that was probably more important, and woke up even more mad. All these people not reading when the race actually is, coming up with a bunch of johns, and being involved and simply not racing is always going to get something like this to fail. If you aren't racing, how can you expect others to race? And before anyone takes this the wrong way, this is directed to every single person who voted or posted positively and didn't race.

It really does piss me off that ya'll will sit here and try to hype something up and then not even bother racing yourself. Someone has got to be the person who enters a race with 2 people, so the 4th person will think to enter, and the 5th. It really isn't about racing, it's about doing something to get TSC together. I'm sick of relying on other people, but ya'll but start talking the talk, I personally found it very inconsiderate that Hypersonic and Sonicboom were the only ones to really show up.

Oh, and no one even bothered to reply to me about the time change, which I'm 100% certain would've had more than 3 people in the race if it was moved an hour forward. Think about that in the future too.

tl;dr I can not stand fence sitters, and I despise people that can't keep their word, and I'm done.

Oh, and I'd also like to give my utmost gratitude and apologies to Hypersonic and Sonicboom, because without you I probably would've broken something quite valuable last night. Sorry I didn't finish the race, Hyper =(

Another thing werster has a nice point about is that Super Sonic isn't faster in most cases. That isn't relevant to having competition, however. The point is to be able to use Super Sonic. And even though the Freestyle charts allow Super/Hyper forms, there's nothing stopping people from posting their normal time in Freestyle. That makes competition for it worthless to begin with. And, as he said, it's fun to do Super Sonic runs, so why shouldn't it be added?

Like...the whole point here is for all the levels it would be quickest to get right to the end, turn super sonic for 3 frames, and cross the signpost. That's dumb as fuck and completely arbitrary competition. But it seems like Romulo at least sees Super Sonic in Sonic 2 is fairly stupid because of this.

The rest of your post is pretty much "This has happened before, so why not?" One of the most pressing points I'm trying to get across here is for something this big to happen to a chart we need to answer exceptionally well the very first question, -why-

What is gained from adding Super forms charts to games so old that prime competition is left only in memories, and that already has the access for competition if it was so desired? Freestyle charts are there and no one uses them right, that's why they are pointless? Well doesn't that go to show people aren't going to compete on something like this, especially when it forces Super forms into levels that they aren't meant to be in at all.

I mean let's be completely honest here Romulo, who are you competing with on TSC for S3K time records? You're beating old times, there is no direct competition. You can go right ahead and do exactly the same thing on the Freestyle charts, it would be exactly the same as adding a Super chart and you bombarding them, there would be no competition for your spot because no one with the same skill set is even messing with S3K right now.

TSC Race Night / Re: 3D Race Night 1: Sonic Heroes
« on: September 21, 2012, 07:46:59 am »
I was meant to post this a few days ago but completely forgot...

So, the S3K turnout wasn't the best, especially given the initial interest. Are we sure the time is the best? I know from talking to people specifically this time doesn't work for either Strong Bad or Shadow Jacky who both would otherwise race Heroes. I know it being an hour earlier would work for them for this week, and I'd be fine waking up at 6am (~_~) to get more people in this race.

Obviously don't want to just change the time without deliberation, but just making sure that we get maximum people in! Food for thought for the future???

Voted for based Sonic Heroes, game is too good. I'd race any team, obv prefer Chaotix but the game is too good.

I'd also like to further the push for SA2B to be around the re-release date, as I want to be one getting it around then too.

Guess I should probably reply since I voted...

I voted No for a few reasons. I happy to be swayed the other way, but I'm definitely not there yet.

1) Obviously it's not faster for many levels. Sonic 2 I can't even think of a single level where Super Sonic is faster, -maybe- Casino Night 2 Sonic? Sonic 3 and Knuckles has hundreds and thousands of really early zips making over half the levels in it faster to not bother about transforming hyper either, and if they are it's pretty much only faster with Hyper Sonic because of his dash move.

2) I really don't like the idea of adding a huge ass new chart to a game that old. I've said this before on past matters, this is the kinda decision that I feel you kinda got stick with this far deep in the works. I understand trying to correct mistakes, but it just doesn't sit well with me :\

3) The charts are already there, you are free to compete. I myself have recently been making some Hyper Sonic videos, they are really really fun. Nobody is stopping anyone from competing with him, it just doesn't happen very much. As a result it seems clear that it would in fact reduce competition as it's another huge ass chart to fill up that people don't really want to deal with. Especially when the majority of the levels are exactly the same.

4) I don't know why Sonic 4 charts got Super Sonic, but I think it was because of the leaderboards. They showed Super Sonic on the leaderboards as legitimate competition, so we tracked them as well. So this really isn't "inconsistent" more that adding Super Sonic to Sonic 4 was TSC trying to keep up with online leaderboards and not be outdated.

I agree if they were to be added they should be their own division (and leadership, oh no Sitewide!) because it'd be too big on Times as Romulo says, and it'd punish people who have already put work into their Times charts and don't want to fill out another sheet. Well, punish them more to be more correct.

I'm sure I had more, I might post again if I think of them. Oh and Super Sonic 2 Rings are fit for like an Emerald Challenge, not actual charts >_>

Competition Mode Grand Prix (No Items) is the easiest goal for those who think the game itself is too rough.

However just in case a glitchless category win you should set the standard for it. There's already a definition on SRL that I think HDL and Werster came up with but I'm still kind of confused whether e.g. the over-the-top tactic as Tails in HC1 would be considered a glitch or not. The definition on SRL doesn't include stuff like skipping the IC1 boss either which I personally would consider a glitch big time.

HDL and I made those rules in about a minute, with the basis of "if it makes sense based on the skill set you are given, it's not a glitch." IC1 Boss skip isn't considered a glitch under those rules because all you have to do is fly or glide + climb, which is obviously in your skill set. By this definition, going across a roof is also permitted, as there is no boundary you have to cross to get onto the roof in HC1.

The other general rule set I've heard of would be something along the lines of "if it looks outrageous to a viewer, ban it" in which case it obviously would be banned, because your Act 2 time is 0:00. Obviously a rule set would need to be made, and it can be whatever it needs to be, but a think those are the two best general guidelines to getting to them in a game as touchy as this.

It's kinda what he's saying, just without wordly it oh so perfectly. Score are to be attained in a single continuous run, meaning if you start at the check with 200, and finish was 46900, in that single continuous run you've gotten 46700, which is fine. I spose there is a case for removing without deaths from the rule (if it's there, I'm too lazy to check) it's just common sense that whatever is whatever. Like with S1GG you subtract whatever score from the previous level etc etc you should get the point by now <_<

Well I found out Mike took Gems Collection with him, which means imma have to drop Fighters. I figured out how to stream console + skype decently on this internet so I'll do a test soon, but I can not for the life of me figure out how to do it well on emulator, which rules out the thoughts I had of running sonic 1 as well :(

Oh, I think that means Advance 3 is on Quartz too because iono what happened to that cart either <_<

Advance 1: Rings and Scores are tracked for bosses, as they are in act 2.
Advance 2: Infinite Rings Under a time limit.

I'm refering to X-Zone and Moon Zone for Advance 1, and check your facts because Advance 2 bosses do not have infinite rings, I checked them myself (much like heroes)

Those Heroes charts have an average of like 70 people on them, putting their efforts into a freestyle chart would be ass. Especially considering chaotix rings have levels like seaside hill with that long ass infinite fly, just suddenly turning around and saying, welp too bad we don't like luck, is just compete and utter ass.

Another thing is that surely this is not a priority in fixing up the charts. Whatever happened to those future and past charts for Sonic CD? What happened to Nonaggression and Doomsday ring charts? And how about the classic Sky Chase getting a score chart, but not Scrap Brain 3, Wing Fortress, Lava Reef 2 Knux and Death Egg 2.

And why oh why for bosses, do we track rings but not scores for S3DB, scores but not rings for the Rushes, both rings and scores for Sonic 4 and Sonic 06, and then neither rings or score for Advance 1/2.

Instead of just bringing up more and more issues we should be actually going through every issue with the charts one by one and not stopping until something is actually done about it.

Zeupar I think you've kinda missed my overlying point. This is creating less competition in two ways. For one, the charts have less stats, and the games (I'm just refering to the Advance series at this point) have little to no competition as is, the new charts would be filled with 2 or so stats, probably yours. You might get the max in those charts, but that's far from competition. Moreover, I could also argue that without ? boxes the charts themselves have less competition value in them as maxes would be much easier to get, with the ? boxes the more time you put in, the better stat you get out, and a record can change hands many times, which in essence is what competition is. But I'll leave that for now...

I don't think that trying to fix errors from the past is a bad idea.

This is not my point at all, my point is if this decision was to be made it -had- to be back then. Now you're just creating more problems than you're solving, and moreover being completely unfair to those who have previously submitted stats.

All in all, just deal with randomness like everyone else, if you're such a fusspot about it there are plenty of other charts out there to compete in.

Rules Revisions / Re: ? Boxes

No. Now I know y'all hate ? boxes, but no, this idea is pretty bad. You're asking to just take down charts just because suddenly we don't like ? boxes. Newsflash, everyone always hated them. If we were going to make this ruling we should've down it at first.

Second of all, we're bringing consistencies to the site. It's pretty stupid to allow ring boxes in some games, but disallow them in others.

Third of, you're now asking for people to put in stats based on a new rule. How much competition does a game like Sadv3 have? Friggen none. And just about the only hope it has to get new competition are new players going through the game and submitting their stats. And then you're banning the normal mode of the game making their stats invalid? Not only is that stupid, but unless they break a record you wouldn't even know!

Obviously the idea is that it would create more competition. Allow me to end by saying this idea is misguided. I have more reasons why this is stupid, but I can't remember them and whatever. All in all, we all hate ? boxes, but if you're committed enough to do a ring stat, you're going to put up with the bullshit regardless.

22
So clearly we have enough support to do this, to cover plenty of games. I think it's time to actually gets some gears going and put together some ideas to put these into motion.

23
Tails' Skypatrol is not worth showing off it is one of if not the worst and boring piece of crap ever and is also impossible to do without dying. Sonic Labyrinth on the other hand is brilliant and should be showcased to full extent.

If needed and able to set up stream I could certainly push in for a few games, S2, S3K, S2GG, Labrinyth, Tails' Adventure, Chaos, Fighters, Sadv3 and maybe Heroes are all games I could easily learn and run if no one else better puts their hand up.

Missing the obvious point is so fun guys, lemme join in.

I'm retiring too! I've achieved so much at TSC in the past years I feel now with my life changing with school being over and me moving states it's time for competing at TSC to end too! However I'll obviously still play sonic games for time, ring, score, etc on occasion, because why not.

I'm about to end this man's whole career...
