Title: The Official Guides/Videos Feedback Topic
Post by: SadisticMystic on October 16, 2005, 12:36:19 pm
This is a place to discuss all those non-record items you can submit here.

Found an error in a guide?  Think you have something that makes it more complete?  Just want to comment on it?

And with videos, maybe you've found something that makes the route shown in one obsolete?  Obviously it's harder to change these than to change guides, but will the effort of making a new one cause it to look sufficiently more impressive that it's worth reposting?

Think  there's an underrepresented level that should have a walkthrough in text or visual form, but doesn't yet?

This is the topic where you discuss all that.

yayers

I've always wanted some way to comment on others videos

I'm sure I've had a few thoughts run through my mind when watching a few of the other's vids here at TSC, as well as when reading the guides.

The only thing I can think of at the moment relating to this topic at all is for mikes vids.

FIX TEH FRAMERATE FOR YOUR VIDS!!! I DON'T CARE IF IT'S UNPOSSIBLE JUST DO IT!

also, maybe you can borrow a gba player for your gamecube, make a few sonic advance 3 vids?

and I guess mike's moonzone guide and my moonzone video are both outdated since the record beats us by like...a second

Not gonna happen, unless you can improve the routes in my runs. =P

Again, not gonna happen. I would gladly, but I know two friends who so much as have a Gamecube... and neither of them have a GBP. I have been looking for them, but I can't find them anywhere.

Not true. That record is bullshit. Plain and simple.

Why are there so many broken links in the videos section??!!  I'd really like to watch some of them.

When the site was restored in July, everything had to be uploaded again.  Unfortunately some of the material to be uploaded was lost, especially the old and forgettable videos.  As more of them are found, they can be restored, but not everyone has a copy of every video to upload, or even cares to look for them.

I thought RPG was like a video freak and had like...a huge cache of them

anyway, if that's the case, I actually have all my videos saved on my PC that I ever submitted to TSC (and some that I haven't submitted :O).

I'm so silly, I thought Rolken had all the vids, but was just too lazy to fix it. Don't know what I was thinking.

Should I just re-upload all those vids, or give them to rolko? I don't wanna be making the site messier then it already is :/

I found the Handicap Quest guide to be really interesting. I do however have some generic commentary regarding background history related things along with an example I've created.
1. Completing Legend of Zelda (the first one) is impossible without the sword. However, it is possible to reach Ganon without it. (The first phase of the Ganon fight requires the sword to damage him.)
2. One of the major handicap quests in NES era history (still popular today with the release of compilation games) was the "Defeat Mega Man bosses without Special Weapons" handicap. In regards to my progression with this handicap, I've managed to defeat all the robot masters in MM1-4 with this handicap.
3. This one's just for fun and is an example of a handicap I've invented and periodically play for 2D games.
Name: "Blind Combat"
Rules: You may progress through the level normally, but when its time for a boss battle, you must cover your eyes in some way that makes you completely unable to see the screen. In addition, you may not use any weapons with refracting or lock-on properties. The objective is to defeat the boss while "blind-fighting".

heh, but not with MM6?  Easiest MM to do no special weapons on.  I dont like to do it with all of them, as with the pre charge beam MM's (MM1-3), some fights took too long, or I sucked against them and relied on the special weapons.

1. The version differences guide for SA2 is interesting. Can it be expanded to account for differences in rings for each version? I would also suggest combining some elements of the hunting guide with this to see if any version has an advantage in mission 1 levels.
2. I also have some commentary for the Sonic Battle guide for a possible skins section. Although the color schemes are relatively limited, it is possible to create several themes for Emerl such as the ones here. This is sort of a wierd hobby I picked up while playing the game.
-a. Bass: For this skin, you need Gamma color 1 (The color is inverted but is supposed to represent the color of the crests on his head), Rouge color 2, Tails color 3 (I think its white), and Knucles' pose (for the eyes). Commentary: My skin of choice. Looks similar to Gemerl except for the eyes. For an authentic feel, add a Tail's shot move to his move list.
-b. Mega Man: You need Sonic color 1, Chaos color 2, Cream color 3, and Chaos' pose. Commentary: The pose looks really weird but the overall skin looks nice.
-c. Viewtiful Joe: You need Rouge color 1, any red color 2, Tails color 3, and I think the original Emerl pose (for light blue eyes). Commentary: This game lacks gray colors so I had to substitite white several times.
-Edit: I think there may also be a screw kick linked DC advantage for Mad Space mission 2 that's not on the guide.

Let this topic also serve as a sort of screening process for videos and guides.

If you don't think a video or guide is up to scratch (or worse, obsolete), inform the admins in here and they'll take care of it. Rolk, Sprint, SDM and I destroyed probably about 20 of the crappy guides, but there's more work to be done.

We need like... guidelines on what consitutes a good guide or video. Thoughts:

GUIDE

* Is relevant to TSC (ie. walkthrough-esque stuff is not what we're after)
* Details a TSC-legal, high-level strategy, preferably in a form people can actually read

VIDEO

* Should be red or better to be submitted (but this rule is not hard and fast)
* Demonstrates a TSC-legal, high level strategy

Post by: Shadow Jacky on October 16, 2006, 11:16:04 pm
ok then, I would like these taken down;

Shadow The Hedgehog: Prison Island - Normal - 1:41:52 (totally crap and what I might do is write a guide on getting under 1:30 for that mission)

Shadow The Hedgehog: Air Fleet - Normal - 2:23:28 (I'm ashamed of this one and was too lazy to go ahead and redo the vid before I sent it out...not to mention yoshifan did it better when I thought I did)

Shadow The Hedgehog: Lost Impact - Normal - 1:56:63 (obsolete)

Shadow The Hedgehog: Black Comet - Hero - 3:50:81 (another one I'm ashamed of now after yoshifan helped me with the stage a bit.  This vid only shows what an idiot I can be sometimes and how to complete this stage in some of the most meaningless ways.  Some things were good that yoshifan himself used, just simple crap I was too far off on to even notice)

Shadow The Hedgehog: Lava Shelter - Hero - 2:12:10 (crappy compared to what people can actually get and also shows some things you shouldn't do.  Another stage I might write a guide on)

Also would my chaotix guide in the SH section be legit?  I changed it up a bit to only show what I was aiming for (which was locations).  If not, then I'm fine with it.  If it stays, how can I change the name on the guide tablet?  Its kinda misleading.

A couple of vids that have become obsolete as a result of a new batch from me and eredani:

Sonic 2
MC1K - 38 (me)
WF - 1:56 (SM)
Metro 2 - 1:15 (douglas)
Metro 2 - 1:11 (me, this never went up because just as I was about to eredani informed me he'd vid'd 1:07)

Sonic 3
HC1T - 51 (me)
MG1T - 1:05 (Sprint)

My poor Metro2 video: now it's not just poor quality, breaking the rules and soundless, it's too slow too.

Ah well, just have to find another level to pwn ;)

I guess it's high time that my old videos were cleaned out, or at least the really disgraceful ones that remain:

Sonic 1
Spring Yard 3 - 1:33 (yellow)

Sonic 2
Mystic Cave 1 (S) - 0:45 (yellow)

Sonic & Knuckles
Flying Battery 1 (S) - 2:46 (yellow)
Lava Reef 1 (S) - 3:07 (yellow)
Sky Sanctuary (S) - 2:35 (yellow, really obsolete strategy)

And if people find LB1(K), MH1(S), or DE1(S) to be eyesores (due to framerate or otherwise) then they could be taken down too.

I think Red Zone or better rule is solid,  because generally to get in the red you usually have to follow the record strat with minimal mistakes, only exceptions should be in a game with very few players where it's harder to get red even if your run is really good.

Take my windy valley(sonic) guide for SADX out if you find it's neccessary, because that was back when I had a bad strategy and you can find a much better one by downloading the single segment run from SDA.

SADX
Ice Cap (S) - 1:56:01 (yellow)
 - I don't see a point to this video being up anymore. Even though F-man's video uses the time freeze glitch, it still shows how to get through Sonic's part of Ice Cap alot faster then My video. As for the snowboarding portion, I am unaware of any difference between Sonic and Tails, so the Ice Cap Tails video can cover this part.

I also have a few others I need to be removed (all by me; ks8):

Riders - Babylon Guardian - Single Lap = 0.30.78
Riders - Night Chase - Triple = 2.02.97
Riders - White Cave - Triple Lap = 2.12.63
Riders - Metal City - Triple Lap = 2.02.78

EDIT:
Heroes - Lost Jungle [Rose] - 284 Rings (now got 370; gotta re-video)

Think that's it, though...

Oh and Power Plant[Chaotix]; just remove it: time says 0:00:00. Not true; mess'd up. And planning on re-video'ing it anyways.

EDIT:
Couple more by me:

-SA2B, Kart Race (Partial)
-Heroes, Casino Park (Rose)
-Heroes, Frog Forest (Rose)

Paragon:

HOLY SHIT at 1:42:87 City Escape video. You pulled everything off. No checkpoint used (why the mission 4?), very nice spindash down the building, and those longer spindashes at the truck are something I'd have never thought of. I think you've definitely owned time attackers worldwide and this video proves it well. It is singlehandedly the best video to grace its presence on TSC for the pure skill that is involved. And to think you've actually got one second better than that... Congrats.
Title: Re: The Official Guides/Videos Feedback Topic
Post by: X-5 on October 31, 2006, 03:34:59 am
no way, you were actually impressed by 1:42 on CE? I thought everyone would think it sucked because of the stupid mistakes I made in the beginning, and the fact I jumped just slightly to late on the ramp before the building descent, which led to me overshooting the grass where your supposed to land. And best TSC video? again, no way :P

I did it all on mission 4 because quite honestly like anyone else playing on mission 1, the checkpoints get really tempting when you've done a good run that you don't want to lose, but I wanted to (atleast) get a 1:44 single-segment, which thanks to a great truck run I got abit lower. (I say great because there's still a spot of luck after the first hill, which obviously went nicely here)

Kinda sad though that it took atleast 300 plays over the course of 4 months to actually get this low(I was CONSTANTLY changing/finding new strategies, but still). Which i've always wondered, how many "No. of plays" did it take you to get 1:50? i'd assume like, alot less than it took me to even get sub 2:00..

but anyway thanks for the words of encouragement,(if your even being serious, hard to tell :P)
Title: Re: The Official Guides/Videos Feedback Topic
Post by: SadisticMystic on October 31, 2006, 04:25:45 am
If checkpoints cause significant slowdown after a restart, it doesn't matter if they're there or not (unless you can manage to cross one with a ring counter in the 80s for a speed shoe boost).  Additionally, it can be helpful for checking your TTs when you have that big clock to look at, which is the reason I did my old Mission Street video (which needs to be improved) on 4 instead of 1.

Post by: Groudon on October 31, 2006, 06:55:38 am
I could tell you overshot the grass, but most everything else made up for it IMO.  I never get that lucky on the truck chase.
Title: Re: The Official Guides/Videos Feedback Topic
Post by: X-5 on October 31, 2006, 11:20:44 am
Yeah, if I did touch the grass and fell right the run could of very well been a high 1:40, which is why it was the mistake of the run, the spindashing down the building is 2 seconds slower than falling(notice I only landed at about 1:10.6, on my best run from falling down the building i've landed at 1:08.5,plus you land right near the stairs)

And the truck isn't really that much luck, charging a spindash:

1. incrases speed
2. Guarantees you won't bounce off(as long as your down the next hill when it finishes charging)

The part going straight down the middle before the first corner also guarantees you'll cut both corners without bouncing(learned this one from F-Man's movie) lining up in the middle is the
hardest part going at such speeds.

And it appears groudon is trying to round up some people from gamefaqs to beat my 1:41..hmm
Title: Re: The Official Guides/Videos Feedback Topic
Post by: F-Man on October 31, 2006, 03:15:06 pm
I thought overshooting the grass was intentional, cause I felt persuaded spindashing down was faster than a bounce attack. (I guess it isn't because you don't land as close to the stairs with a spindash?)

Not sure if I'm right in saying it is the best video. But to me it is, because City Escape has been the hardest level to TA for me, and yet you got it one segment, 8 seconds faster than my previous record that was already amazing to many people.

I have 84 "No. of PLAYs" on M1, but would definitely have over 200 if I had quit when I had no life left instead of always collecting 100 rings to gain lives.
Title: Re: The Official Guides/Videos Feedback Topic
Post by: X-5 on October 31, 2006, 03:51:33 pm
I don't know if you've seen my 1:50 on hard mode or not, but during the building fall I was able to make sonic take up the whole screen, it's random when it happens but if it does he falls in about 4.5 seconds instead of 6, which is faster than the building could ever be(6 second fall is about the same as spindashing down the building)

Your 1:50 run is really way better than you think, considering you did without spindashing down the roads,(at the beginning and at the truck) which adds so much luck that it would be impossible to get a flawless run. I just copied your movie exactly and could only do 1:52.

I think you should play it a few times when your bored one day, copying what I did and I guarantee you'd beat 1:50 by quite a bit without much effort, since the luck factor in my movie would probably be 1/20, whereas on yours a perfect run would be 1/1,000,000.

As low as 1'40" is possible? Wow. There must be a lot I don't know about.
Back when there were times under 2 minutes, I figured that the best runs had very lucky
(or well-aimed) rolling near the end. (I've almost done it without bouncing, but I'd still be over
2 minutes if I put that in a time-attack run.) But then, I'm not a serious SA2 player, and I
haven't done much time-attacking or glitching, besides some Sonic/Shadow M1 times
and that Cannon's Core Knuckles glitch I found (which is probably what everyone uses).

Oh, and I demand that you change that message above your avatar to "1337 at 3D".  :P
I didn't notice that you were in SA until a few days ago, but you're good at that, too.

The RH vid still doesn't work (M1). It just leads back to the page where you choose the game for videos since it doens't have a file...kind...thingy. (As in wmv, avi, etc.)
Title: Re: The Official Guides/Videos Feedback Topic

K. I had no problem in my skin because attributes are double quoted. A single quote (ie. an apostrophe) closed the attribute in other skins, making the file name end early. I replaced the "it'll" part to "it will" and now it should hopefully work for everyone. I'll say it again, apostrophes are a baaad idea.

For M2, the URL exceeds the 255 character limit so it got truncated. If paragod used regular spaces instead of %20, it would probably have been fine. There's no way to fix it unless he tells what the complete URL is.

All his other myfilehut vids work fine.

I should of just left cybrax's videos alone, instead of making all this trouble for everyone, hell the quality of my direct-tsc uploaded videos are ridiculous because of the stupid 10 mb limit :/

I re-uploaded Radical highway M5, and F-man fixed M1(thanks, I had no idea a ' would cause a glitch, i'll keep that in mind, along with the long file name thing) are there any others that are broken? Other than Sky Rail M5, Seaside hill/rose and bullet station/rose because the site I uploaded them to is stupid and doesn't know how to store a file properly, so they're gone forever

Big movie deletion request, dead videos only anger people i'm sure so why keep them here?

SADX:

Emerald coast/Sonic: Dead- S3k should upload 0:59/1:00:1:01/whatever someday anyway.
Windy Valley/Sonic: Dead, mega sucky n00b route
Speed Highway/Sonic: Dead, obsoleted by S3K

SA2B:

City Escape Mission 2, Mission 3, and Mission 5 Score Attack: all long dead, I can fix M5 with 29.260k.

Metal Harbor Mission 2: Dead, I can fix this one afterwards though.

Weapons bed Mission 1: Dead, Bad route anyway. If I ever get 1:25 i'll upload that.

Sky Rail M5: way dead, mega sucky run.

hey if i want to get a good quality run, i should record it through DVR right?

But the question is, if i keep pausing on the DVR, or stop, will it connect all the trial and errors i do? I really don't think I can get the "perfect run" in one run. I would hate to waste a dvd if i can't separate the different runs on the computure.

You cannot piece together a recording to upload.  You can only put up videos of a single run.

With that said, I'm looking forward to seeing EggmanLand Wii getting trounced even more so than Shizzlee's video.  Oh, and your 3'30 one.

Windy Valley/Sonic: Dead, mega sucky n00b route
This doesn't apply to me (not anymore anyway lolol), but "mega sucky n00b routes" are what people take when they just plain don't have the skill/patience/luck/whatever to do the pro routes.

I have no intention of piecing together different runs.  It's just that the method of recording I did before was through the memory card of an old camera.  What that did was that every time I messed up a run, I can just stop recording, and the next run I do, it gets saved as a separate file from the other runs.  I just wanted to know if a DVR has that same capabilities.  But I'm not sure if it saves the different runs as a single file or separate files for each run.

The 3'30 run took about 15 tries before I got it, and it was still a relatively safe run to say.  I just wanted to get through without taking too many risks (ex. boosts).

My new record 3'18 took about 3 hours to finally get the run through and it was still a relatively safe run too. I had to master new shortcuts on the go while still looking for new shortcuts as well.

I want to capture an absolutely perfect all risk run in good quality for everyone to enjoy.
