Title: Sonic Online Competition
Post by: Taco on October 09, 2005, 05:10:54 pm
Sonic Cage Dome (http://scd.sclassic.net/scd/) is hosting a sonic competition online through Gens

it's basically just a knockout tournament. Last person standing wins teh tournament.

The site seems to of just started, and as a result is quite small, but I think it's growing slightly bigger everyday

It's also probably a good way to promote interest to TSC, since SCD is all about competiting against others, just online rather then through time attack

Their banner lies though. Look at what it shows on TSS message boards :(
(http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/5395/lies5yo.jpg)

It's probably not a big deal now, but it might be later. Anyways, just thought I'd post this up incase anyone was interested in pwning some newbs to make themselves feel better, that's all >_>

EDIT: Ack, I thought it was still going on, but apparently it's already over? The sites really strange to navigate through. Oh well...they might have another one I'm sure. so keep your eyes peeled, or something.

I would sign up but I have 28K and I think I'd be pwned by a newb with DSL/cable and plus, I suck ass as the Genesis games. D:

sonicam: I suck at the Genesis games too (Apart from a few levels) but I'd've loved just to see how far I could've gotten.

Looks like they held one tourney, and they are planning another to take place using Sonic 3 & Knuckles...

No wait, that was on the 1st and 2nd of October. That is gone.

*shrug*

Someone sign up there and be like "TSC lol, we take you all on".

Actually, be more covert. Go and see how good they are (ask around for times achieved in competitions and stuff).

Then we can be all like "TEAM TSC CHALLENGES YOUR PITIFUL TEAM SCD".

And then be like, lol, kaillera is broke.

Yeah.

I always thought that to win (in versus mode) you just needed to beat the level as fast as possible, but according to my sonic 2 guide, your rank depends on time, rings, and score.

We could still probably whup em though :o

Post by: SadisticMystic on October 10, 2005, 10:54:46 pm
In S2VS, there are five stats tracked for levels:
Time - fastest wins
Score - not displayed on the in-level HUD, but it still counts up.  It's mostly just a tracker of the number of enemies hit, as bonuses aren't calculated and hitting multiple enemies at once is rare, but Casino Night has some additional point triggers to make up for the relative lack of enemies there (slot look-alikes at 800, star bumpers at 10, and color-changing temporary bumpers at 10 for the first 8 hits and 500 for the last)
Rings - the number of rings displayed on screen when the level ends
Total Ring - the cumulative total of all the rings you've collected at any time.  Rings you lose from getting hit (or dying and having your total reset to 0) still count toward this, but rings you recover after taking a hit don't count repeatedly.
Item Box - Each item box you hit (even Eggman) counts as 1 for this, with one exception.  If you hit a 1-up for the other player, that player gets the item box point.

The player with more wins out of these categories (normally it takes 3, but 2-1 with 2 ties is possible and counts as a win for the player with 2) scores a win for the level.  If the opponent crosses the finish line first, you should try to hunt down things that will give you a higher total in the other categories (you only have 61 seconds to do this before you lose a life and the level ends).

Of course special stages track only rings, and the player with more wins out of the 3 subsections, if any, gets the level point.

Man, this is sounding harder then it really is >_>

All you'd probably need is a good lead against the other player. That way, you could gnab most of the goodies before the other player even reaches em

Do you know how much weight each of those factors has on the final decision SM?

Too bad there's no competition based on console games (not roms or emulators) being planned. I can see it now; a large convention of Sonic fans from different fan sites meeting at one place as part of a grand contest to determine who the best players are. Then theres the $1000 question, "If we could pick 10 players (5 for 2D and 5 for 3D) to represent Team TSC, who would we pick?"
Title: Sonic Online Competition
Post by: yse on October 11, 2005, 06:37:32 pm
Hm... That's exactly what I've been considering in the past day or so (but not really with the 2D/3D consideration).

Maybe everyone can post their nominations in here instead, and leave the other topic to it's purpose.

My choices:

2D: NintenDan, SprintGod, myself, sonicam, and one of the top Sonic 1 players (ybbun perhaps)
3D: SM, cybrax, SS101, RPGnutter, Rayku

In 2D, I've tried to cover all the bases, whereas in 3D there aren't exactly many bases to cover.

I've tried to get at least one person who specialises in each 2D game, as follows:

Sonic 1: Whoever I pick for it
Sonic 2: Me
Sonic 3/Knuckles: Sprint
Sonic 3 TA: I don't know (in fact, maybe Ghost is a consideration for this reason)
Sonic 3D: Nobody really cares, right? But sonicam has experience here
GG games: Between us, Sprint and I have those covered. sonicam is also all-dominant at Triple Trouble.
Advances: NintenDan. 'Nuff said.

That's basically all of them. This 2D team could take down the very best, and I can say that with confidence.

The 3D team all have high-level experience in SA2B, SADX, and I suppose they could pick up the controller to play Heroes if they wanted =P

Soniham's ranked high in Heroes as well, and mike IIRC you are the new champ of SA3 D:

But I'm pretty much in agreement with mike's nominations. Though I'd probably consider RPG for Advance 2 just so Ninty doesn't have all the fun =/

One problem with the list...Ghost is actually xebra in disguise, and I doubt you're going to convince him to come back.

And I don't think that place is going to offer tournaments in games without multiplayer modes anytime soon, so you can save your worrying for now.

Lol, yeah right... Pfftt... sorry for lying you guys. But honestly some of the attitudes in here are well... Yeah you know...

You guys unfortunately dont sound too supportive. We're not really much of a big "Time Attack" you guys. We just host roms, do bits of research and enjoy hosting friendly competitions for the sonic fan. But seriously how does my banner lie you guys?

Stay tuned for the Sonic Olympics you guys. Infact I would really like it your community participated in it, I have not contacted any other communities yet.

Ideally, this will inspire people from here to actually play the Genesis games, so they could be part of TSC's team for this tournament.

And while I'm at it, how many players does each site get?
Title: Sonic Online Competition
Post by: Zizou on October 12, 2005, 09:48:41 pm
Well like said in the video, There will be 10 events, and 5 communities. In each of those events there will be 1 player from each of the 5 communities.

Let's put it that way, all you should need is 10 players max.

I haven't planned out the 10 events yet, but expect it any time soon.

PS: Anyways how do u guys do Sonic Heroes and stuff? Have a guy with a camcorder record his TV or use the emulator? Not many people have PCs powerful enough to emulater that type of behavior.
Title: Sonic Online Competition
Post by: yse on October 12, 2005, 09:55:19 pm
I personally haven't recorded any times for Sonic Heroes, but I think NintenDan puts them on tape and sends them out to Shadow Wedge, who can convert VHS to AVIs. Not many people here can do this, which is why there's not many people with videos for SA2B/SH/etc.
Title: Sonic Online Competition
Post by: Spinballwizard on October 12, 2005, 10:10:55 pm
According to the vid, 5 (Nice vid, BTW. I like how you worked in the Shadow theme at the end). Just from seeding out the best players, I'd nominate you (mike89), NintenDan, Sprint, SM if he's up to it, and maybe RPG?

iono, the first 3 are the fo sho's considering how much Genesis is involved.

If I were to participate for TSC, I'd REALLY have to find the time. With school and work, I don't have many days or times available. Knowing from what I saw about times for the Sonic 3 tourney they had, mike would have to get up awfully early in order to participate (6amish IIRC, based on 4PM Eastern/9PM GMT start), which could put a dent in our plans.

I also know I'm going to be torn. I know of 3 TSC members that are at the Sonic Planet/Sonic Revolution network, whom Zizou is almost definitely going to ask to participate. Those members would be myself, soniham (who isn't there much), and geedee (who really only discusses ETCF). Something tells me I'd be told to get involved there, considering I link to my TSC profile in my sig. That would leave me torn between SR and TSC.

There are pros and cons to each side. If I were to be on TSC, I'd be on one of the most favored sides (considering we have some of the best TAers here, which can translate to some fast times based on consistency; I know on IP2 I can get sub-50 80% of the time roughly, and any time I don't it's because I quit due to a major screw up). Though I'd likely be the worst player on the team, especially with the likes of Sprint and mike manning the Genesis and Game Gear areas.

Whereas if I were on the Sonic Planet/Sonic Revolution team, I'd likely be one of the better players (even though my genesis times still need work), but I'd probably be more likely to be on the losing end. (Though still high up, considering SonicGuy756, the admin of SP/SR, made it to the semis of the S3 tourney.)

I'd also have to download Gens and the appropriate ROMs, which I somewhat have a taboo against, but could likely be convinced to.

In other words, I'd be a definite maybe for even showing up, if not even for who I'd be participating for. Meh, I probably won't be able to make it knowing my schedule.

If I knew how to do the video method Nintendan does for recording times, I'd love to represent Team TSC for the Sonic Heroes section (if there is one) of the contest.

That problem will be circumvented in a few weeks. Daylight savings switches over at the end of the month, so 6am will become 8am, and that'll be far more manageable.

And there might have to be something done about players who could compete for two or more teams. I'm only a member of this Sonic community, so no problems for me. However, the case SBW brought up brings the issue of match fixing into question. I dunno if it'd happen, but would a player "throw" a match against someone from their other community to give them a better chance of winning? I know it seems pretty low, but I'm sure there're people out there who'd do it. Naturally, the aim is to keep them out of the tournament at all costs.

I think I've said my piece for today. But just out of interest: Which communities are we likely to be competing against?
Title: Sonic Online Competition
Post by: Spinballwizard on October 13, 2005, 12:08:03 am
The only one I'd be sure of would be Sonic Planet/Sonic Revolution. Other than that, I'm not sure. He may try to get TSS, but I'm not sure what they'd do.

And if I were to choose sides, I wouldn't throw a match. If I were competing, I'd compete my hardest for the side I was on, regardless of whether it were TSC or SP/SR. I don't know what other communities are involved though, as I mentioned, so I don't know who else is on those other communities.

I remember I tried playing sonic 2 online with a friend

I had to close everything else because it would lag like crazy. Even when Gens was the only thing running, the game still lagged online (just a bit, it was much more playable, but still, a very small lag)

And I thought GBA online play was impossible

Seriously, I'm going crazy, is it, or is it not possible to play sonic advance online!

There is a thing, VBlink, that can act as a link cable between two instances of VBA. However, it is really designed for LAN. The data transfer between GBAs is too intense to play at anything like a reasonable speed online.
Title: Sonic Online Competition
Post by: Zizou on October 13, 2005, 04:27:58 pm
Its for LAN. I dont know, but according to what I have read. GBA Online has never been done sucessfully.

And honestly, kaillera does works pretty good. I mean I dont see the problem, and most got over the 56k phase. Like for SonicOlympics, there will be a ping restriction which is 110ms.

If you are part of the SEGA Master System Recorded Time Attacks, (Recorded with Gens+) you can use 56k. and then send it to one of the organizers/judges. The file will be fairly small and easy to upload, and it is not possible to cheat because Gens+ does not record in a published video format whatsoever. It has its own format that is only playable thru the emulator.

More intructions on that coming soon.

Oh I don't think I've ever even tried kaillera with a ping of over 50ms. But it still sucks. Game compatibility, keylag, generic silliness...

Never used it with Gens though.
Title: Sonic Online Competition
Post by: SprintGod on October 14, 2005, 06:04:36 pm
Just thought I'd point something out...

"Live Time Attack" can be easily done with no latency whatsoever if the player hosts their own kaillera server for the game.
The player will get a ping time of approximately zero. Everyone else's ping is irrelevant as they aren't playing. All that matters is that no-one drops packets and causes the game to lag.

But I myself will not be participating. Others in the community will because they happen to specialize in the genesis sonic games, where as I specialize solely on the sonic advance series (and seeing as how there is not one single round of sonic advance in the tournament) I guess I'm not needed :D

But we are still part of this. I will just be watching and cheering, not participating. That's all.

sonic 1, I've never really tried that much. I'm sure I could...but sonic 2, I've just never been able to beat it. I can easily get all 7 chaos emeralds and manage my way through the zones, and the metal sonic is a cinch, but it's eggman that I'm having trouble with.
