Title: Validating Forum
Post by: Rolken on October 24, 2004, 07:58:08 pm
Just reply to this (or make a new topic if you want) indicating that you're not stupid and/or incoherent, and ideally that you've read the registration info thingy.

fyi, only validating folks can make new topics in here, but anybody can reply. :o

Validation is no longer necessary. You can still say hi here if you want. X)

Ah, i see you like Sonic Stadium's idea for a Validation forum. I'm glad you made one, this should eliminate the idiots who like to make random accounts and submit impossible/no records here. So, all in all, good idea Rolko.

I prefer SWS2B's idea, but whatever.  Less scripting required this way.

What does SWS2B do?

I wasn't even thinking of TSS; validating is hardly a unique idea. ;(

SWS2B puts all new users on Trial status for the first 20 posts; once all 20 are used up they automatically go to validating.  From there the admin decides whether the member is good enough to merit promotion to Member, or to just leave them alone and hey stay in the purgatory of validating status forever.

Trial members aren't usually banned before 20 unless they really deserve it.

Of course SWS2B also has a quiz about the Sonic 2 ROM and about the Genesis hardware as a requirement just to make it to Trial member, but that would just be overkill and unnecessary.

A quiz wouldn't be that bad, but make it on general Sonic knowledge because if you put too much emphasis on one game and that person doesn't have it, they shouldn't be penalized for it.

There's also another requirement that's related, and in some cases can be considered, stupid/incoherent. More likely than not, you did not meet it.

Why should there be a quiz? Sure, maybe as something on the side if you're bored, but it shouldn't be a requirement. I mean, as long as someone that doesn't know too much about Sonic, but acts like they know everything, and/or they're causing a disturbance/getting annoying, they should still be able to join. If that does come up, they'll probably be banned or repremanded in some form anyways.

Note: Nothing that I say is actually "official".

Actually no, if you read that you are a perfectly normal person, AND I can back that up due to scientific research. (I'll condense this).

Scientists worked out that when you read something, you only read the first and last letters in order to speed up the process.

Eg

Sometimes

And so, it doesn't matter what order the other letters are in, all you need to read a word is the first and last letters.

Eg

Semotemis

(Hopefully you can read that, if not I've fucked this whole thign up. =) )

So in conclusion, if you can read the above word and Yurka's sentance, you are not a nerd, you a perfectly normal person with a fully functioning brain.

Pwned.

(And if anyone's wondering how I know that, I read it on a site somewhere, they explained that in a paragraph that was using the same concepts as how i've typed 'Sometimes'

Eg Sietnsics hvae fnoud).

Hello.  I'd like to be validated.   I read the rules, and will follow them.  The forums seem interesting; the stuff in there could help me play through the games faster in school (oops, did I say that aloud?), and maybe even try to compete with you all.  Also, the content seems based around the forums, and access would help greatly in reading it :P

I play the Sonic games for the 16-bit consoles and back - nothing further, as I don't own any of the next-gen systems (and I didn't buy DX/PC) ... for what it's worth, my best games are Sonic 2 and Sonic CD.  Also, like Jeffrey, I'll probably lurk a bit ...

(rant)WHAT IS WITH ALL THE L33T SP34K?!!  AHGH!!!  I can read it, but it is still annoying - 0|V|& 1 (4|\| |_|$3 (|-|4|24(73|2$ ... (/rant)

I've been wondering about this for a while.
At first, I couldn't get into the forums at all.
My account disappeared some time after that, and I had to set it up again.
A while later, I found that I could access all parts of the forums.
What happened? Was it that the missing account was a glitch,
and I got validated because people knew me from the chat channel?

Possibly. You knew about the downtime right? About April, it was all "onos we're down!" Rolken restored the backup from last november, then restored the backup from december because it was newer. That may have been the thing that happened.

My account got completely wiped with the downtime. I had to sign up again twice; once when the november was restored, then again when december was (which wiped it again; I joined right after that backup was made :( ). So it depends on when you originally signed up I guess.

Bah!Well, it's always nice to have friendly competition. I highly doubt I'll be competing in advance 2 again though since I can't bring myself to time attack it seriously whenever I try :(

I don't mind if you beat my records. In fact, I think it's kinda cool that there is someone following in my footsteps, like I'm some sort of ancient leader (like Jebus :o)

But I do mind if you are cheating, because, well then you obviously don't deserve those records!

Although proof isn't required, I suggest you try to capture at least a few snapshots of some of your record times. It's not necessary, but I do have to admit that you surprised me myself quite a few times with some of your new times! At least this way, I can know that I am being beaten honestly, rather then by a cheater (like Dale...)

See you round the forums Douglas! :o

I had some uncompressed vids that I couldn't get to compress properly, and which I lost in a hard disk upgrade.  I'll maybe do a recording session this weekend, although I'm usually rubbish when it's recording (too much pressure!).  Any requests for that and/or screens?

In that case, I'm definitely going to try to take a few points away from you in Advance. Unfortunately... I'm having too much fun on IM2 Knux to even bother with the other levels right now. Oh well, at least I can improve on that, even though I'm still ~14 seconds off the record. Most of it is silly mistakes on the boss, but the level strat MAY need fixing slightly.

Actually my right hand was sore yesterday from IM2 Knux... so much spindashing I did...

Could you try a run of Egg Utopia 1? Character doesn't matter, but I'm interested to see how you cut more than 10 seconds off that record. (Needless to say, I was somewhat pissed when I'd finally beaten the old Knux record, only to see that you'd already beaten it.)

Oh yeah. Once I'm done with Sonic Advance for the time being (and am no longer sick of Advance 2, which will probably take a few weeks), I WILL take IP2 back! That's MY zone, hear?

RPG, you must have lots of free time, considering I TA at those times too, but I hardly have time to get down to the PS2 to do ShTH. GBA games are easier to do in that case due to work and school breaks, but even then I only get them in 15-20 minute bursts, which gets on your nerves when you get on a roll.

Anyway, I think a picture would do just fine, though if you want to submit a video, then by all means do so. The more videos there are, then the better :)

Just wondering. How do you record your vids? and for that matter, how do you play Sonic Advance 2? On Gameboy or emulator? I find it extremly difficult to airdash rapidly in succession on the keyboard, but then again, most people find it difficult to airdash rapidly on the gameboy, so I guess like anything, it probably just takes some getting used to.

And in fact, its even easier on DS as my right D-pad button is mangled up from too much ADing...in fact...I will maybe get 5:50 Aero Egg-Sonic and then retire from Advance 2...until some vids come up for me to copy >_>

Egg Utopia 1 - Tails - 1:31:68 (http://media.putfile.com/Sonic-Advance-2---Egg-Utopia-1-Speed-Run---Tails)
Pretty poor run in places (1:08 and 1:17 come to mind), but meh.  Shows y'all the route I use.  Actually, looking again sub 1:25 is more than possible, maybe sub 1:15 for Sonic.

Warning: it's nearly 15 meg, the quality's iffy and the sound's out of sync.  I blame VBA.

Anyway, any more requests?

Emulator for TAing.  Air dash breaks my hand either way but my keyboard's pretty nifty and I find it easier.  I've been recording vids using the in-built thingummy in VBA using Divx 5.3.1 for encoding, but seeing the results it's given I'm thinking I should get Hyper Cam or something.  What does everyone else use?

Eh, the quality isn't too bad. sound's desynched as you said, but it still provides help for me. I know that a lot of people who record using emulators here usually cut the sound. It's mainly to cut the file size.

I'm pretty sure NintenDan records via Game Boy Player + GCN (considering that you can see some obvious GCN things on his vids) + VCR, but I don't know where he goes from there. Most of the strong Genesis players just record with Gens, but I'm not sure how other Advance series players record (does anyone still active here record Advance games besides Ninty?).

Supposedly airdashing is easier on the GameCube than anywhere else. I can't really say much, considering I only use my GBA.

Also, I never would've thought about using that route... especially since I've never taken that route before. Like ever. (Well, as least after the checkpoint area; first ~half of the run is pretty much the same.)

I did get rid of the validation process; New Members are equivalent to Members now as far as posting eligibility. But since Members weren't supposed to post new topics here before, changing New Members meant they could no longer post new topics here. XD Fixed now.

New Members change to Members after a certain arbitrarily low number of posts now, like 5 or 10.
