Title: Project Needlemouse Character Countdown Trivia Game
Post by: Thorn on January 11, 2010, 02:24:00 pm: This really isn't newsworthy, but it's a bit late to be having a Happy Holidays message on the homepage, so this'll make us seem up-to-date because every other Sonic site is posting it. :P

Made that last one up, but he may as well be in there in place of the sad excuses for characters we'll be prancing around with in this game.

In three years Sonic will be found dead, smothered by the carcasses of fucked up characters.

1. Mr. Needlemouse.
2. Froggy
3. Big
4. Chip
5. Tikal (She's long dead and has no form of combat ability)

I think who gets cut from the list depends on where this game is in the time line. Unless this game is 2 or more years into the future, then Shade is out.

IMO, the most likely characters besides Sonic to be playable are Amy and Shadow. Although Amy seems to have branched off towards being a warrior rather than a speedster. If handled right, she could provide a different yet fun playstyle, one that's more combat orientated (perhaps Zero style or even ideas inspired from Muramasa). We might even see guns if Shadow is playable. As much as people love to whine about the guns, if well handeled (Gunstar Heroes style shooting perhaps), they would work pretty well in 2d. Arguably better than 3d.

This looks fun, inb4 Sonic is the only playable character. Hopefully. Maybe Sonic's new friend Mr. Needlemouse will be Chip's twin brother who doesn't need any shading because he glows really bright.

Post by: Parax on January 11, 2010, 08:41:34 pm: I've said this before, but I'm guessing they're just gonna cross off every character except one and give us a new set of characters each day. There's just too many characters in that picture that couldn't possibly be playable and/or are obvious jokes (even SonicTeam's not that bad). The only ones in there that I could possibly see being playable (aside from Sonic) are Amy, Shadow, and -maybe- Tikal (maybe Shade as well, I don't know anything about her). I'd also be surprised if Tails and Knuckles didn't make the cut, their absence just cements this to me more. So that would suggest that none of the characters listed here are in the game except Sonic.

Of course, there's the chance that they're even dumber than I could possibly imagine and the final roster is Big, Froggy, Mr. Needlemouse, and Chip. But I hope it's not that bad. Guess we'll know whether I'm right tomorrow.

Shade in summary: Echidna kunoichi (her design screams ninja). Started as an anti villain before joining the group. Defector from an echidna civilization that were ancient enemies of Knuckles' tribe. The cause of her defection was being deceived by her leader. Fights with high tech equipment (has cloaking) and her energy blades are analogous to a pair of short swords or daggers.

The whole point of this PR campaign is to riff on the hate for the character explosion. That Tails and Knuckles aren't even listed should tell you that this isn't an actual reveal of a roster of playable characters, but just their way of driving home that everyone but Sonic is getting cut in internet-meme-friendly fashion. Take into context also that this project is meant to be their "rebranding" of Sonic in which they start making 2D games for consoles again (and the use of the Sonic 1 logo); the only plausible endpoint for this PR stunt is that the only character left at the end will be Sonic. There's no safer bet than that.

edit: and after poking around a bit more, the trivia questions they're asking are all from Genny games, and they're running the contest for 5 days and they cut 2 on the first day with 11 characters total? 11 - 2*5 = 1. Really, it's inevitable.

But yeah, if I had a nickel every time somebody's come out and said "It's only going to be Sonic, stop buying into this stupid marketing ploy", I'd've bought myself a 12-piece Chicken Nugget meal with waffle fries and a Dr. Pepper at Chick-Fil-A by now at no cost. It would be delicious.

On topic, I agree with the Almighty Rolken. However, it also occurs to me that we've yet to have a game with JUST Sonic and Shadow playable, when that actually makes a lot of sense.

Yes. If they are thinking to make a sequence, in the next game they put tails and/or even knuckles.
