Title: Ring Allergy?
Post by: Muzozavr on July 30, 2008, 04:34:48 pm
If you have a Ring Attack, why not have a Ring Allergy, where the goal is to collect as FEW rings as possible, and you can't lose rings in any way. (i.e. can only lose shields. That's to prevent things from being too easy)

It's a lot more difficult than it sounds, to the point where zero rings is impossible in some levels (example: Labyrinth 2 due to that ring box on a switch)

Because most levels are zero ring-able.

Yes, they are, but that doesn't make them EASY. :P

Also, a lot of things depend on character choice. Sonic will be a lot harder than Tails or Knux.

This TAS says hi (http://tasvideos.org/2001S.html)

Unfortunately, this doesn't work with Sonic. In the later games the major offenders are loops, but in Sonic 1 there's varied reasons why Sonic can't pull it off:
* The aforementioned 10 ring box in Labyrinth 2
* In Marble 2 you have to fall through a gap at the start with two rings in it - you can't dodge them both
* Spring Yard 3 has a few rings you can't dodge in one of those tubes with springs at the bottom. The similar one in Spring Yard 1 can be skipped by bouncing off absolutely everything at the start, apparently (I've never done this myself)
* The Scrap Brain 1 trick doesn't work because you can't get to the bottom quickly enough (and I think Sonic 1 handles offscreen rings differently to the Knuckles hack in any case)

I have an old topic somewhere detailing what we thought were the best possible results with Sonic (though it would be obsolete now as I'm certain SB2 can now be done ringless).

OK, but I didn't say neccesarily ZERO rings. I said "as few as possible".
And in Marble 2, there are more in the lava chase segment -- at least 4 rings are forced there -- seven if you don't use a shield to get hit.

And SB2 can be done, blad005 was challenged to it and did it. Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97kNrHg-oAc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97kNrHg-oAc)

He couldn't do:

* Marble 2
* Spring Yard -- ALL OF THEM (there was something evil in act 2 also)
* Labyrinth 2
* Scrap Brain 1 -- he has done 1 ring, which seems to me as the best possible result.

Could you show me this topic, if you can? I tried and coudn't find it, and I am obsessed with this ring allergy challenge, so it would be an interesting read to me. :)

Um, there's a glitch that lets you go through a wall in that level, the same as the one in Marble 1 and 3, but this doesn't save time because of an already established trick which is quicker.

i think this is a good idea, but you can have something else as well to add on like low score challenge, and you cant die or get hit
