Beta is here (http://sonicresearch.org/hacktube?399).
Yeah, another S2 hack, I'm bored. Emerald Hill 1 through Chemical Plant 2 has been designed, with a few lagging layout choices from Turbo (the good parts, I swear). Special Stage 1 is done up to the second checkpoint; everything after that is leftover from Sonic 2. Levels are longer this time around due to ASM modding being more forgiving than hex modding. That pesky aerial speedcap is nerfed too.
I have music plans, but as with Turbo I'll worry about new sound driver implementation at a later date. I'll use the Sonic 1 driver instead of the Sonic 2 Beta driver this time around, so no screechy noises.
Typical replies may follow.
-
Typical response asking that music needs to be changed in all acts but am too lazy to specify which music should go where leading to you becoming annoyed and then making a post that will ask which music should go where while I take forever to answer that post.
-
Although MegaUpload is started to have some damned perverted advertising. >_>
This is probably because they also host megarotic.com
Or was it megerotic. Mega I think, its a bit shite though. Not that Id know. A friend told me. Yes.
No I did not make this post solely to find out my IP.
srsly u guyz

Yeah, I'm genuinely bored when I'm making zone-specific springs. >_>
EDIT: Boredom is also defined as SSh-ing into your university's UNIX server to read Matlab's output for the why command. *sigh*

Pretty self-explanatory; don't get hit or die in a level to double your ring bonus. The removal of the perfect bonus also allows for using "object rings" in the level, effectively nulling the 255-ring-per-act limit in Sonic 2.
-
"Not hit bonus" sounds horrible. I'm sure there's a word out there you can use in its place.
-
^Don't think I haven't realized. :s I've been thinking all night and have nothing. If you have a seven-character phrase to use in its place, please enlighten me. It was initially "no-hit", but that didn't line up. Initial thoughts are...
Unscathed - 9
Flawless - 8
Unharmed - 8
No-hit - 6
Safety - 6
Thesaurus.com isn't giving me any help either; the only seven-letter word it has is "perfect", which obviously would cause confusion. Until I figure out how to reposition the on-screen text, I can only replace existing letters.
-
Damage bonu
-
"Unrival" bonus.
"Unrival" is the name of the invincibility tunes in the later Sonic games.
:)
-
Just call it technique bonus like in SSR :/
Thorn EDIT: 9 != 7
Whoops, didn't notice character limit...anyways, Tech bonus like RPG said.
-
Tech Bonus?
-
...you guys misunderstand [sic] me. EXACTLY 7. Not less, not more k.
If I use a different amount, I hafta shift the words on screen around to re-center things. And to be honest, that's probably not that difficult, but I'm just too lazy to modify the mappings. Tweaker's makes sense; question is, will anybody else get the reference...
Anyway, I'm busy working on level designs for Puto's hack, Sonic 1 Remastered, so I haven't even touched this in a month.
-
Awesome bonus >_>
-
I heartily agree with RR.
Also srry I thought you meant it was a max of 7, not actually 7 :(
-
Couldn't you fill blank spots with spaces or something?
Or am I a noob and there are no spaces?
Otherwise, Awesome Bonus is great.
-
^ I'm drawing those letters, so there's whatever I draw in. But the space between Perfect and Bonus has to stay the same, as that's programmed and not part of the drawing. If I put space at the beginning or stretch the letters, it'll look distorted.
Again, I'm working on a different project anyway.

Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrKUQwlN8Tc)'s a YouTube vid of the mod in action.
Here (http://cid-f9c5b5f57636c3b6.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Sonic%20Modding?lc=1033)'s some music mods I did for mine hax, and the original of one of the tunes for reference.
-
Mod looks nice, liking the 2nd act of Emerald Hill.
The music mod file isn't working for me. And what's with that random Dynamite Headdy track? lol
-
^The Dynamite Headdy track is for Casino Night 1.
Also what is your media player? WinAMP has given some people problems (it doesn't play that first .wav file), but WMP, Audacity, and Lilith have handled them fine.
-
WMP didn't work, but Audacity does. Sounds alright but I personally don't know it's the most appropriate choice of track for conversion.
-
Well, I suppose I can convert Never Gonna Give You Up instead...

From Sonic Retro:
Okay, a small beta is available here (http://cid-f9c5b5f57636c3b6.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Sonic%20Modding/s2|_thorn|_dnxdelta.bin), so DL and comment on anything and everything, please. Music, art, layout, bugs... every tip counts. If you're looking for screens, the video from the first post is pretty close to the current beta.
Current Status
- Layouts up to Chemical Plant 2 are finished, and Special Stage 1 is done
- Sonic 1 Sound Driver ported, about half of tunes modified to work correctly
- Hub /overworld system half-implemented
Eventually-To-Be
- Character-specific programming (i.e. Tails flying)
- More layouts and special stages, obviously
-DNXDelta doesn't have much in this beta, but he's working on other things such as this.
Issues
- Sonic 1 Sound Driver is buggy as hell. Srsly.
- Layouts are designed with character-specific abilities in mind, so some things are unreachable.

Music is good but, Zone 2 music needs some work. Not exactly feeling it (though iono what it is anyway). The scenery from Zone 1 is somewhat... bland. Mainly the pink.
Also, the overworld idea is sexy. I might have came.
As per usual I provide a pic of some hax. This is one is more due to spring placement.
Pretty good for a small beta.
:thumbs up:
-
I personally think this is an AWESOME hack...
please change nothing about the first two zones (or at least the FZFA ^_^)
more info once you bother to awaken....

Overworld music should be changed to race to win but not as sucky (make it a little better).
Act 1 and 2 need music overhaul with something else and boss fight is still pathetic with useless platforms.
Enclosed is a pic I drew half asleep and sick.

It's the time of year when everybody makes panic submissions to the Sonic Retro Hacking Contest, so obligatory release (http://sonicresearch.org/hacktube?399). You can use the Java applet on the page to demo the hack, but the applet can't replicate PSG tones (so the sound will suck hard) and is prone to freezing during level transitions. I'd recommend downloading the hack from the link instead of using the applet.
-
Well, with my partner on the project, DNXDelta, saying he's "leaving the scene" and whatnot, now's as good a time as ever to put up another YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijPvwonqKcU) for showing off WIPs, in case he doesn't come back for ages and I grow bored of hacking and drama drama drama. Aside from "You really need to learn to edit title cards; having more than one Emerald Hill 1 is lol," comments and criticism appreciated as always (read: taken offense to, met with rebuttal, spawn arguments).
I swore I'd stop putting up YouTube vids after sifting through tens of messages in my inbox asking for hacking lessons... I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

Triple posting, screw all of you. Link (http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?s=&showtopic=10884&view=findpost&p=303693).

Quadruple posting, so this is my last attempt before I simply stop posting it here.
