Okay so I have 15 players. That's close enough, I've asked douglas and Judgement and the first one who gets back to me can have the last spot.

In the meantime, here's the stuff for the tournament (http://www.soniccenter.org/tournament/Tournament.zip). This should include the following:
If it's missing something, notify me and I'll see what I can do.

Also note that you don't need to grab that if you already have everything in it, or even if you're only missing one or two ROMs. I suggest getting a couple of things separately, but if you need most of it then you should probably grab the pack.

Before we start, a few of our less familiar players might benefit from the following:

Gens+ Tutorial
A tiny bit long winded, but it does the job. Here it is (http://www.soniccagedome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3706) (yes, it's on SCD, shut up)

Emukon Tutorial
Emukon works a bit differently. If you can work your way around Gens+ you should be able to load the ROM without too much trouble. Then you'll want to select File -> Movie Logger to begin. Pick a number and press Record, and you'll record.

Playback is more interesting though. The format of the output file is "<ROM name>.gg.x.movie", where x is the number you selected on the Movie Logger screen. The filename, when I play it back, must match this exactly, and be situated in the Movies directory of Emukon, then I select the number and press Play. You will need to know this if you intend to review your performances, too.

You can (and, in fact, should) rename your file and let me change the file name back for judging purposes - but be aware you will not be able to view the movie yourself after you do this unless you change it back.

---

On that note, I will again be providing zipped files of all the submissions I receive in any given week. They won't be attachments to my posts though; they'll be uploaded to the new /Tournament directory of TSC. I'll post links so you can grab them easily.

It looks like splitting players into League 1 and 2 is going to be easy, so there won't be a qualifying round. The leagues are therefore as follows:

League 1: eredani, yoshifan, RPG, SkyLights, Shadow Jacky, Aitamen, Nelspike TX, Quartz
League 2: douglas/Judgement, SBW, Achlys, genus, digitrev, SuperSonic94, MK, Strong Bad

EDIT: it seems Judgement replied three days ago and I didn't notice. whoops. looks like the last spot is his.

EDIT2: I have been informed that there is no Chaotix ROM in the zip. Google sonicstuff and you can get it.

Okay we're nearly ready to start. The last piece of the puzzle is here: your partners for Round One:

League One
Quartz vs Nelspike TX
Aitamen vs SJ
eredani vs RPG
yoshifan vs SL

League Two
Strong Bad vs MK
Supersonic94 vs digitrev
Judgement vs Achlys
SBW vs genus

For the benefit of those who aren't as active here I'm going to include everyone's email address in the first post so you can make some contact with them. Alternatively join the chat because it's awesome in there.

And now, the all important categories!

Each week I am going to give the categories some sort of theme. This week, it's Internet memes.

It's OVER NINE THOUSAND!
All your base are belong to us
yea BLAZIN'
It's a trap!

Both leagues share these categories - one pairing in each league will play each challenge.

Also, a reminder that the first round will begin at 12:01am GMT on the 7th (to avoid midnight confusion). That's still the better part of two days away, but it'll help if you can sort this out: If you can't sort it out I'll assign you categories myself.

I'm presuming that since mike edited in a comment about not including a Chaotix ROM on accident, then there aren't BIOS either. Although KEGA does not need BIOS, Gens and variants do. Here you go (http://www.knuckleschaotix.info/bios32x.zip).

Also since you hafta DL the ROM separately, everybody has to get the same format. I'd personally say NTSC as the rest of the ROMs in that .zip are likely NTSC.

And now, the moment you've all been waiting for!

Since a lot of you were slackers and didn't pick categories, I picked them for you! And you're all going to love what I picked >_>

Round One

Challenge 1: Play Aquatic Ruin 2 in Sonic 2 as Knuckles. You must collect 9000 points (time/ring bonuses do not count). Best time wins. (You do not have to complete the level, you may end your recording once you have achieved the goal.)
Target time: 2:00
Competitors: Aitamen/SJ, Strong Bad/MK

Challenge 2: Complete Launch Base 1 in Sonic 3 as Tails. Most rings wins. Ties will be decided on time.
Target rings: 300, but you must collect all of the large rings
Competitors: eredani/RPG, digitrev/SS94

Challenge 3: Complete Marble 2 in Sonic 1. Best time wins.
Target time: 1:30
Competitors: Quartz/Nelspike, Achlys/Judgement

Challenge 4: Play Mystic Cave 2 in Sonic 2 as any character. You must fall into the Spike Pit of Doom (if you don't know where this is, I will provide you with a map and/or smack you over the head). The winner is the first to die in the spike pit. (You may end your recording after death)
Target time: 0:36
Competitors: yoshifan/SL, SBW/genus

You have exactly one week, minus 20 minutes. Good luck, and get cracking!

PS. don't forget the bonus point for first submission! (EDIT: Aitamen has claimed league 1's bonus point, and Judgement league 2's.)

I'm adding a new nuance to the scoring to assist you League Two peons. (This is also going in the first post)

If you can beat a League One player in your challenge, you get a two point bonus!

I hate to do this to you guys, but I've run into a pretty serious problem.

SS94 has indicated that he will probably pull out. I need a replacement. Fast.

Or, I can get him to do this challenge, and the replacement can take whatever he gets and start from round 2.

Any volunteers?

EDIT: also, categories for Round 2. Most of you should recognise these...

Something old
Something new
Something borrowed
Something blue

The challenges are wedding themed!

Wild predictions to follow.

Old-Sonic 1 I assume, maybe something from GH. To keep with the idea of 'fateful encounters', 'love at first sight', and so on it could have to do with the fight against Eggman.

New-I'd say this is from S3K, which is the newest mainstream Sonic game we're able to compete in. Something involving Knuckles seems probable for the same reason I see an Eggman fight as likely. S2K for the throwback perhaps. Or maybe it involves Tails.

Borrowed-I'd say a challenge from Thorn's tournament, but that wouldn't make sense since he's doing things with hacks. Mike could also be dipping into older EC's, in which case anything goes. It could have to do with the oft recycled generic zone designs; Green Hill, Emerald Hill, etc. come to mind in that case. No idea as to what it has to do with weddings.

Blue-An underwater level, for sure. Either Labyrinth or Hydrocity. Aquatic Ruin doesn't get mentioning not only because it's the worst zone in Sonic 2, but because it's green. Chemical Plant is blue. Very blue. And people buy hairsprays and the like in bulk for weddings. There is the distinct possibility I have hit upon something.

Sonic CD might get into a challenge, 2, or even 4 because of Amy. That does go along with this whole wedding shabang quite nicely. As it stands my guesses are the best, because nobody else bothered anticipating what Mike does. I am the best at guessing these challenges. It's a great feeling to be the best at something.

Something Blue is -obviously- Aqua Lake or Planet.
Something Old? - A ruin level of some sort.
Something New? - Aquatic Ruin given the "Neo" prefix of the working title

also for some reason Hydrocity came to mind for all of those:

old:  its an old water works or temple type place
new:  new stage from the genesis titles
borrowed:  its a water stage and it borrowed the ability to skip across water like Aqua Lake from Sonic 2 GG
blue:  blue water

Ice Cap has plenty of blue.
Title: Re: Tournament 1: Here we go!
Post by: Aitamen on October 13, 2007, 07:12:45 pm
Something old: SMS sonic? Sonic 3 by itself?
Something New: KC?  Hack?  "Neo" something? SCD?
Something Borrowed: Perhaps it's based on SCD, since, even though it came out a year after S2, it was based on S1 sprites and actions and modifications thereof...  Perhaps something having to do with Super Sonic?
Something Blue: Perhaps it's water... perhaps it's sonic... perhaps it's fighting sonic...  perhaps it's the BSOD?

I give... I hate weddings anyway... all the more reason to ANNIHILATE this challenge!

Something not blue for me, please!

wait what?

SS94 thats the lamest excuse to drop out.  I'm one of those that have the weakest of 2-D skills yet I'm still in this.  I'm running off of old school knownloedge, a ton of runs that I've seen, tricks that have been talked about to death, and Emerald Challenges.  All of that STILL doesn't let me hang with these insane 2-Ders

hey SJ, as my rival for the first round, I still call it AOK.?  Competing in a game and setting you're unfamiliar with just for the sake of competing... that's how you get better... and just DOING it is what matters

If it wasn't for M89 pissing me off, I wouldn't have tackled the rings for the 2D games...?  look where I am there now!

also I still cringe at some of these challenges and even if its something I can do, I'm still not that great.  also its a learning experience as I couldn't believe some of the things I've done, but its normal to you guys >_<

I have bad news.  Due to my move, since my computer isn't going to arrive in NM until after I do (yes, damn my father... I thought it'd be faster/cheaper, but I was wrong), I'm going to have to drop out from the tournament...

trust me... it's not like I want to...

but I still intend to do what I can for the tourny and the site...

Be well, everyone... and sorry to dissapoint if it ends up that I can't finish out the tourny

Okay this round isn't going so well. Only five submissions. And a challenge that I can't grade. :/

Here's your opponents for round 3:

League One
eredani vs SkyL
Quartz vs SJ
RPG vs yoshifan
Nelspike vs Aitamen

League Two
MK vs MaxFirestorm
Judgement vs genus
Achlys vs SBW
Strong Bad vs digitrev

Round 3 has a new group: the Quadrinity! As such the challenges are as follows:
mike89
RPG
Thorn
Aitamen

And this is going to work a bit differently. I'm going to tell you guys directly what your challenge is this time. I'll endeavour to send it to everyone at the same time so that the race for the bonus points isn't compromised.

Get cracking!

Aitamen's something in Sonic 2, no doubt about it. Thorn? Ugh, Chaotix is all I can think of...

"mike89" has to be something awesome and yet ridiculously difficult. RPG could be -anything-. Damn "all-rounder."

Okay, here's how this is going to work.

There are still two days left in round 3. However, this round is going to run alongside round 3.

There are, of course, bonus points for first submission on offer, one for each league as per usual.

So without further ado, the category for Round 4 is:

"Back to his roots."

There are a few ways you can find out what the actual challenge is. Firstly, for the IRC folk, I'm making a new channel: #tournament - the challenge will be in the topic.

Or, you can contact me directly as usual. From the time you do that, you will have exactly one hour to submit.

You have two days! Let's go!

EDIT: Here's your partners for Round 5:

League One
Quartz vs eredani
Nelspike vs RPG (Aitamen)
Aitamen vs yoshifan (RPG)
SJ vs SkyL

League Two
MK vs  Achlys
MaxFirestorm vs SBW
Strong Bad vs Judgement
digitrev vs genus

In Round 5, you will play Round 3's challenges again, but you may not play the one you played this week. Therefore, that leaves most groups with just two choices, but RPG and Aitamen only have one choice as they cannot pick their own challenges.

You must collect the following items: 10 rings, Speed Shoes, invincibility, each of the 3 types of shield, 1-up, Robotnik, and a large ring. Your run ends when you collect the last item, and your time is the sum total of all levels played.
Target time: 4:00

Challenge 10
Complete the first Special Stage of Sonic 3 with any character. You must collect all blue spheres moving backwards. You must also get a perfect bonus. Best time wins.
Target time: 1:22
Players: Aitamen/yoshifan, digitrev/genus

Challenge 11
Complete any two Act 5's in Knuckles Chaotix. (The level select code is 06 0B 11 / 04 00 04 on the Color Test screen.) Your time is the sum total of these two acts. Best time wins.
Target time: 4:00

This round has been a disgrace. Three submissions! D:

The categories for round 6 are below: They'll all take the form of a cryptic crossword clue. These things are notoriously difficult, and in fact I've been holding back this round for weeks while I come up with decent clues. Unfortunately, the end result still isn't that good, but we'll work with what we've got. Here's a bit of a guide (http://www3.sympatico.ca/tagies/cryptics/solvingguide/solvingguide.html) to solving them - I can't guarantee it'll help, mainly because these clues are not that good. :P

High sickness mounts (4)
Flowing rock sounds like a crappy program (4)
A clientele vat: organised hiding place on moving platform (8)
Brings beheaded metallic circle (5)

There's two days left on both Round 5, and the Bonus Challenge (which itself has only four submissions. Hurry up!

I've never seen a cryptic crossword, and I have no idea what the numbers at the end of the line reference, so for the amusement of everyone else I'm not going to try to put together a well-composed guess. Think of this as English class on TSC.

High sickness mounts-Mercury thermometers, especially on horseback, are bad for you. Mercury's found underground, which means we're playing Lava Reef. The 'horse' is an allusion to freedom, what Sonic and Tails want to obtain by getting out of the cavern into the outside world. Here it can be logically inferred that Sonic is the one partaking in the challenge; Tails is a sidekick and not worthy of a 'high' sickness, instead being relegating to 'moderate' or 'lower' sicknesses. Mike is cautioning you to not get ahead of yourself with this challenge, and instead play moment by moment. It's basically Lava Reef 3 on 1/7x speed as Sonic. '7' because in Western culture 7 is viewed as a just number, perfect and the antithesis of evil. Just like Sonic.

Flowing rock sounds like a bad program-Glowing frock. What makes a glowing frock? Radiation. And you find radiation in chemical dump sites. Chemical Plant from Sonic 2. The 'bad program' in all probability refers to taking a less popular route, the 'road less traveled by', cutting words designed to mock those who shirk responsibility in favor of procrastination and general sloth. This less popular route entails more risk, but is all the more rewarding for it, a parable for hard work vs. natural intuition, and why the first always triumphs. I'm certain there is also an allusion to the age old literary theme of coming of experience and end of innocence. No doubt that the challenge is to get hit 5 times against the boss of Chemical Plant 2, and not move horizontally without the spindash.

A clientele vat: organised hiding place on moving platform-Why, it's Oil Ocean of course! Mike is satirizing the Western world's dealing with entities that actively oppose their existance, namely Saudia Arabia; in the Middle Ages, a common execution method for heretics, or Muslims, was to boil them alive in a vat of oil. The perceived former executors are, in a dramatically ironic twist, forced to be subjected to the same punishment their direct descendants supposedly inflicted on others. Saudia Arabia can be seen as avoiding scrutiny, "hiding" on the rough-and-tumble "platform" of economics. Going along with the theme of creative evasiveness, the challenge must be to clear Oil Ocean 1 through duplicity, killing nothing, an allegory for Western-Saudi relations as Sonic actively seeks to destroy Robotnik, creator of robotniks, and not robotniks themselves, while the West is trying to stifle terrorism without cutting it off at ground level in Saudi Arabia.

Brings beheaded metallic circle-If you cut off a circle's "head", through the use of a guillotine, you are left with have a circle, or an arc. 'Arc' is a homophone of 'ark', as in SA2's 'the ark', a major plotpoint shrouded in secrecy. So something mysterious, adding in an air of the unknown. Concurrent with the space theme, and on the same thematic plane, is Sonic 2's Death Egg, full of formerly unseen enemies. 'Death' is of itself an enigmatic and unusual force and eggs, high in protein, can be seen as creating powerhouses. So here will be an implied evil of a strong calibur which can only be destroyed with a sterling courage, the probably climax of the narrative. The challenge is, then, to beat Death Egg without using the spindash, your most trusted weapon.

If you think I was serious then please quit the internet.

No you just think too much.

I'll give my two cents...

High Sickness mounts: Mount could mean two things: something you ride on, or a mountain. High could involve being actually or something that you might see when you're high (i.e. something psychodelic or something). We might have a double definition here. A glider is something that you ride high in the sky. It's possible to get airsick (especially if you look down). Sky High is in a mountainous type zone, so it probably involves Sky High and gliders. Of course GG's shot right now so I'm probably horribly wrong. Marble Garden might be another one. Maybe Knuckles on Sonic's boss? These would make sense if it weren't for the 4 letter part.

Flowing rock sounds like a crappy program: Lava. "Flowing rock" is the definition, and "Java" could in a sense make a crappy program, and lava rhymes with java. Crappy program could also refer to the game. S3D and Spinball were lower games in the series. Showdown in Sonic Spinball involves shooting up on rocks from volcanic craters. ("Rock It" if you're savvy with the trigger.) I wouldn't rule out Lava Powerhouse or Volcano Valley either. Assuming I'm right this was pretty easy.

A clientele vat: organised hiding place on moving platform: "Hiding" triggers hidden word. Assuming we're hiding a "place"... special stages are often hidden in S3K, but I don't think that's it. "Moving platform" might trigger an anagram. I hate anagrams. I have no clue.

Brings beheaded metallic circle: Beheaded triggers deletion. "Gears" has 5 letters and is a metallic circle. However, that doesn't involve a deletion. "Wheels" doesn't... oh God, second look and this is easy, RINGS. "Brings" beheaded (taking out the "head" letter) is "rings," which is a metallic circle. Rings are everywhere though, so I have no clue what this could mean challenge wise. I just don't want it. >_>

Okay a couple of orders of business. If you read my emails you will have already seen this, but it needs mentioning here too.

Again a rather disappointing round to date, but you've still got two days to turn it around.

Round 7 is now open! The category is "Springs." You'll, again, have exactly one hour from the time you find out. And #tournament is open again!

Round 8's categories take on a theme that seems to be all the rage lately: the Olympics. As such, the categories are as follows:

Citius
Altius
Fortius
Rings

I wanna see a lot more challenges this time Sunday!

That leaves just this round's challenges, and I have gone on record as saying this is my most epic set to date. I stand by that!

Challenge 17
Play any tournament-legal level that has a current time-based video on TSC. Beat the current time video. The winner will be determined by the percentage by which the video is beaten (for example, setting 1:00 against a 1:15 video would be 20%).
Target: Completion - just beating any of the videos is enough
Players: Quartz/yoshifan, digitrev/Achlys

Challenge 18
Play Marble Garden 2 in Sonic 3 alone with any character. Take a spinning top up above the top of the level, and take it to Knuckles' boss area. From here, make the screen fade to black. Best time wins.
Target time: 1:16
Players: SJ/RPG, Strong Bad/SBW

Challenge 19
Play Launch Base 1 in Sonic 3 as Sonic and Tails. Defeat Robotnik in one of his appearances during the act. Best time wins.
Target time: 4:30
Players: Aitamen/eredani, MaxFirestorm/Judgement

Challenge 20
Complete any level in Knuckles Chaotix with 255 rings. Best time wins.
Target time: 4:00
Players: Nelspike/SkyL, MK/genus

But wait... there's more!

Bonus Challenge 2
Challenge 16 again, but you have to beat the .giz I've provided at the bottom of the post.

This challenge will run until the conclusion of the tournament.

Only two weeks to go! Good luck!

Seeing as mike is, um, preoccupied at the moment.../me tries to think of random, generic, IRC murder to insert here, but can't.
...he asked me to post the challenges. Copied directly from mike's PM:

*ahem*

Sonic 1 - Play through Sonic 1, collecting all the emeralds. Your run ends when you collect all six emeralds, and your time is the real time from the start of Green Hill 1 to the finish.

Sonic 2 - Play through Sonic 2 with any character, starting from Chemical Plant 1, collecting all the emeralds. Your run ends when you collect all seven emeralds, and your time is the real time from the start of Chemical Plant 1 to the finish.

Sonic and Knuckles - Play through Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic or Knuckles, starting from Flying Battery 1, collecting all the emeralds. Your run ends when you collect all seven emeralds, and your time is the real time from the start of Flying Battery 1 to the finish. (You can just collect the Super Emeralds in S3&K if this is favourable.)

Sonic 3D - Play through Sonic 3D, collecting all the emeralds. Your run ends when you collect all seven emeralds, and your time is the real time from the start of Green Grove 1 to the finish.

Pairings are in the post prior. Get crackin', biznatches.

Alright folks. Cue the dramatic music.

There's two days to go, and you know what that means! The last round is here!

The category for this challenge is "Final Score". You will have two hours to complete it.

Since this round has started three hours late (a compromise I was forced into courtesy of Thanksgiving), the round will also finish three hours late. I will also end Round 9 and the Bonus Challenge at this time.

Here's hoping for a highly epic finish to the tourney!

% - indicates five points for winning the Bonus Challenge

Congratulations to the winners! Prizes will be forthcoming shortly.

Let me just say that I've had a fantastic time running this tournament. It's always fun to see the skills of the best players on show, and once again all my expectations have been surpassed. Except one... the amount of submissions I'd get every week. I think it started with 13 in the first round, and slowly thinned its way down to the last round turnout of merely 7. Players seemed to be less likely to complete challenges when it became apparent they couldn't win (RPG I'm looking at you >_>) so we need to think of some way to make sure that doesn't happen.

I don't think the League Two additional points experiment worked too well either, particularly with Aitamen and Nelspike being no-shows pretty much all tournament. I think it will work if we can consistently get eight League One players every week, but see the previous paragraph for the problems we face there.

And on that note, an interesting idea was presented to me by... I think yoshifan in the last week. He said that the existing TSC players should be in League One, and any new recruits gained by the tournament scheme should go to League Two. That was certainly the original idea I had in mind, and it ended up being that SBW, Achlys and Judgement were far too good for the rest of the competition - not really an ideal scenario.

One last announcement. I know I said I enjoyed running the tournament but I think I might enjoy competing in one even more. As such, I am stepping down from the role of tournament co-ordinator, and am leaving the position open to all takers. Any new tournament won't be held until March at the very earliest (and probably not until June), so we'll have plenty of time to sort that out.

Congratulations to all the competitors (especially the ones that stuck it out until the end), and hopefully you'll come back and do it all again!

Suggestion: Let whoever the hell wants to hold one, provided they can provide enough challenges to do so.

Anyways, here are my reflections. First, win. :o

Second... Thorn's elimination plan might be the way to go. This way the lower-ranked players don't have to worry about submitting since they're already not going to win. I'm planning a small-scale tournament (maybe just a test one, not sure) that's going to utilize elimination as well so we'll see if that works.

Third... My personal opinion is that League Two bonus points (for beating L1) shouldn't take effect for non-submitters. Kinda defeats the purpose in my opinion.

I don't know about anyone else, but I had fun (and would've even if Achlys had come out on top). I'd definitely have another go. (And with luck, I'll have more time to actually get decent runs in.) And yeah I'm looking forward to playing with the big boys. GRAWR.

Let me restate my suggestion on this matter.  I suggested that the bonus points should only take effect if the league 2 player defeats both league 1 players.  That way, it's not as much of an extremity (combined with the afformentioned idea would be good too)
