You bastards. I was hoping you would all panic thinking someone would have to do the 12 hit Death Egg. :(

Anyway, here are this week's challenges:

Challenge 1:
Sonic 1 - Labyrinth 3
Collect at least 12 item boxes and complete the level in a single life. Best time wins.

Challenge 2:
Sonic 2 - Emerald Hill 1
Collect as many rings as you can in 12 seconds with Sonic alone. (Addendum: if you collect a ring box before 12 seconds and it pays out after 12, those rings will count.)

Challenge 3
Sonic 3
Complete all 12 acts with Sonic alone. Best game time total wins. (Addendum: use Sonic 3, not S3&K)
Additional Rules: Deaths count against your time!

Challenge 4:
Sonic and Knuckles - Sky Sanctuary
Complete the level with Sonic and Tails. Each character must land 12 hits on Metal Sonic and/or his machines. Best time wins. (Addendum: use S3&K, but that should be fairly self-evident)

After you and your partner have reached agreement on a challenge (and a second preference), PM them to me and I'll fit you all in with what you want.

Get cracking!

Why is it that I signed up for this a few days before I went on a vacation? I don't know.

But I can't do it anymore. I thought this was "ok do one run right now" rather than a weeklong thing.
Title: Re: Tournament 0: Testing

You have a week to complete it. That's the only real thing. (I'll be out of town for a couple days next week, but I'll have my lappy available for doing a few runs.)

Talking with Upth momentarily...

Also with #3 is it counted in game time or real time? (I assume game time but just checking.)

Your challenges have been selected!

genus/Achlys: Challenge 1
Upthorn/SBW: Challenge 2
Thorn/SJ: Challenge 3
eredani/yoshifan: Challenge 4

(eredani was a late substitution for Aitamen)

Get cracking!

I wish to appologize for dropping out, but I think it'll be better for the competition... the competition I was to be given, I would not have been able to complete, thus leaving my oponent with a win he didn't earn... how fair is that?!?!

You'll need a sub for Achlys too, as he dropped out.

This experiment isn't going very well...

Aw, you sonsabtiches. I was just discussing with Shadow Jacky last night how the challenges would fall, as I kinda noticed the trend in what everybody wanted, but the fact that people dropped out wasn't considered in my idea, so I was WAY off. Also Aita, I find dropping out due to "inability to complete the challenge" to be a very poor excuse, no matter your ability at S&K, seeing as you get a whole week to rehearse your run and that you and stanski have ungodly S2 skills.

Also, just for shits and giggles, here's how I had thought it would fall, judging by everybody's reactions less than an hour after the challenges were declared:
Upthorn was considering either 1 or 2, Aitamen insisted on 2, SJ and I agreed on 3 or 4, and Achlys would only agree with genus on 3. So I imagined Upthorn would get 1, Aitamen 2, Achlys 3, SJ 4.

I should take note that you totally didn't know my preferences becaused I sent them to Upth in PM. <_<

For laughs, you should post all the videos after every round. That way, we can nitpick minor mistakes and gawk at our inferior opponents.

I just sent Mike my challenge (via email), assuming I even needed to submit an attempt.

Also let's predict who advances based on background knowledge!

Challenge 1-Me, obviously, because Achlys isn't doing this anymore.
Challenge 2-Upth, because Upth is all around a better player than spinny.
Challenge 3-Thorn, because he has more experience with Sonic 3.
Challenge 4-It could go either way...however, I think I'll give this to Yoshifan because eredani never says anything.

Oh fu. It's not like I'm not trying.

Round 2 will be a Free-for-All challenge. Specifically, one where you will be ranked against each other, rather than preset targets.

The category is "Ring Rush".

EDIT: SJ, Upthorn and Achlys* haven't submitted yet. Hurry up!

* Achlys may not submit at all due to being on vacation. If so I'll just give genus the points.

EDIT2: Scratch that. genus's submission is void.

Ring Rush, huh?  sounds a lot like what I'm doing...
that's my best guess...  I might be able to try again

Also, I want to appologize again for dropping out, and thank Eredani for taking my place...

I've stopped gaming altogether, but this is something that's easily broken

I'll be scrambling to get another run in before the deadline.

Are you positive I only hit 11 boxes? If so, I guess I forgot the one at the end.
Title: Re: Tournament 0: Testing
Post by: Thorn on August 17, 2007, 12:34:59 pm
^Hey, I need to redo my run as well. Mike, are you absolutely sure you don't care to add any more last-minute rules? (yeah, call me a bitch if you must, I still say I shouldn't have to keep redoing my run) Also genus, mike tells me you used a .gmv? How do we know you're not TASing? .giz kthxbai~.

EDIT: Redid my run, mike; it should be in your inbox. If it's not, lemme know right away. I didn't die, nor did I enter bonus stages lest the timer resetting count against me.
Title: Re: Tournament 0: Testing
Post by: General Throatstomper on August 17, 2007, 05:52:17 pm
.giz? Explain, last time I made one of those it was desynced and everyone called me dumb for using one.

You really don't know that I'm not using doing a tas...but, assume good faith and all that.

Plus, my run is ridden with minor flaws.

Challenge 2-Upth, because Upth is all around a better player than spinny.
Perhaps you were confusing me with Thorn, who actually has more than one submission here?

Was that the Kid Chameleon run? We called you dumb for using savestates with a key input file you numnutz. .giz records initial position in the game, vairables set by the game and whatnot, and keystrokes. It will not return to savestates. Admittedly .giz files do occasionally desynch, but since Gens+ doesn't have much in the way of TASing, it's the preferred method of proof on TSC.

The results are in!

Challenge 1
genus - void (only hit 11 boxes, time was 2:57 for interest's sake)
Achlys - no completion
Points: genus 3, Achlys 3

Challenge 2
SBW - 34 rings in 12 seconds
Upthorn - 33 rings in 12 seconds
Points: SBW 6, Upthorn 0

Challenge 3
Thorn - 26:19
SJ - 30:34
Points: Thorn 6, SJ 0

Challenge 4
yoshifan - 1:56
eredani - 1:51
Points: eredani 6, yoshifan 0

Current standings:
Code: [Select]
Player   | Points
Thorn    |      6
eredani  |      6
SBW      |      6
genus    |      3
Achlys   |      3
Upthorn  |      0
yoshifan |      0
SJ       |      0

Find enclosed seven .giz's - two for challenge 3, two for challenge 4, and three for challenge 2 - as SBW's and Upthorn's weren't that good I included a demonstration which collected 46.

Now onto round 2!

Challenge 5
Complete Marble Garden 1 in Sonic 3 with any character. You may use S3 or S3&K. Most rings wins. If your clear time is over five minutes, your run is void. (Addendum: Remember that TSC rules state you may not use bonus stages, before you get any ideas!)

This round will be scored as follows:
First place - 10 points
2nd - 7
3rd - 5
4th - 4
5th - 3
6th - 2
7th - 1
8th - 0
If two players are tied, they will each get the higher amount of points, eg: two players tied for third place will both get five points.

On your marks... set... go!

You should post my 11 box run vid...seriously, it was a great run. Too bad I couldn't get a 12 box run in though.

Anyone using Sonic for this challenge is effectively saying "I'm good enough that I think I can beat you without flying or gliding".

Who's up for the task?

Oh, and are giant rings to increase our total fair game?

1. TSC rules unless stated otherwise.

You may collect large rings for 50 rings if you already have all emeralds.

Seems pretty clear to me.

Also genus might I remind you that you and "good faith" haven't gone that well together in the past. >_>

Random stab aside, I honestly don't expect to win this one by one ring like I did last time.

btw, for anyone who cares, Sonic with the ShJ is really the easiest way to go with this, due to speed and the lack of flight-lag of landing....

again, since I didn't get the first challenge, I won't be competing, but I might post a route
Title: Re: Tournament 0: Testing
Post by: yse on August 20, 2007, 11:32:38 am
I just had an idea. I'm going to do something completely out of the box, and see if it works. Remember, this is a test.

Enclosed is a 54 ring run of challenge 2 performed by Aitamen. I'm going to add a bit of spice to this. Anyone who can match Aitamen's run gets two tournament points, and the highest submission at the conclusion of the tournament gets five points!

That still leaves you the best part of three weeks. And you can continue to improve as many times as you like! As a corollary, the results of the bonus challenge will be visible to all players (probably in the first post).
Title: Re: Tournament 0: Testing
Post by: General Throatstomper on August 20, 2007, 05:21:05 pm
So are we just getting 54 rings, or are we actually duplicating his run frame by frame?

Or by 'match' do you mean 'beat'?

And are you nerfing the 10-something point system in favor of this 5 point idea? Or is it the best run within the deadling gets 10 points, and another 5 if it's the best by the end of the tournament?

Seriously, your post was vague in a hazy sort of way.
Title: Re: Tournament 0: Testing

No, genus, you're just being an asshole.

So are we just getting 54 rings, or are we actually duplicating his run frame by frame?

Or by 'match' do you mean 'beat'?

54 rings is sufficient for the two points. However if you want five you'll probably have to do better.

And are you nerfing the 10-something point system in favor of this 5 point idea? Or is it the best run within the deadling gets 10 points, and another 5 if it's the best by the end of the tournament?

No, this is what people like to call a Bonus Round. It runs alongside any existing challenges and gives out its points at the end of the tournament in three weeks time.

SJ - 5
genus - 4
SBW - 3
eredani, Upthorn, Rick - 0 (no submission)

The Table:
Code: [Select]
Player   | Points
Thorn*   |     15
yoshifan |     10
SBW      |      9
genus    |      7
eredani  |      6
SJ       |      5
Rick*    |      5
Upthorn  |      0

* - indicates two points for the Bonus Challenge

Rick is a substitute for Achlys

All five entries are enclosed at the end of this post. Due to space limitations I'm going to have to take down the Round 1 set, IM or IRC me if you still want it.

Now for round 3!

This is Head-to-Head, but a little different from the first such round. I'm going to again allocate partners, but this time it'll be first come first serve. And this time, you'll only have a category to select, not a challenge, bringing a bit of guesswork into the equation.

The categories are:

More Ring Rush
Better Safe than Sorry - SBW/yoshifan
Pitch Black
Tick Tock

Your partners are:

Upthorn/SJ
Rick/eredani
genus/Thorn
SBW/yoshifan

Get picking!

Okay this might seem a bit rushed but I wanted to give you as much time as possible with your challenges.

And here they are:

Challenge 6 - SJ/Upthorn
Complete Sandopolis 2 in Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic. You may not use the screen wrapping glitch. Most rings wins. (If you tie, as will be fairly likely on this challenge, it will be decided by time.)

Challenge 7 - SBW/yoshifan
Complete Sandopolis 2 in Sonic and Knuckles with Knuckles. You must collect at least two of each type of shield. Best time wins.

Challenge 8 - Rick/eredani
Complete Sandopolis 2 in Sonic and Knuckles with Knuckles. Start recording from the end of Sandopolis 1 (you may make a savestate here before recording). You may not use any light switches (grabbing them and jumping off before they take effect is okay). Best time wins.

Challenge 9 - Thorn/genus
Complete Sandopolis 2 in Sonic and Knuckles with any character. Best time wins.

Get cracking!

For this challenge, I have provided Rolken with an updated map, as it seemed like it may be helpful. Check http://www.soniccenter.org/maps/s3z92.png (http://www.soniccenter.org/maps/s3z92.png) if you need help planning.

Okay here goes. The final challenge's category is, aptly enough, The Final Showdown.

I only have one submission for this round though. Your deadline is in less than 30 hours - hurry up!
Title: Re: Tournament 0: Testing

Round 3 results are in! And much more disappointing than I expected :(

Challenge 6
SJ - void (used screenwrap)
Upthorn - no submission
Points: SJ 3, Upthorn 3

Challenge 7
SBW - 5:24
yoshifan - 4:19
Points: yoshifan 6, SBW 0

Challenge 8
Rick - no submission
eredani - no submission
Points: Rick 3, eredani 3

Challenge 9
Thorn - 3:56
genus - 7:58
Points: Thorn 6, genus 0

The Table:
Code: [Select]
Player   | Points
Thorn*   |     21
yoshifan |     16
eredani* |     11
SBW      |      9
SJ       |      8
Rick*    |      8
genus    |      7
Upthorn  |      3

* - indicates two points for the Bonus Challenge

And now, for the final challenge:

Challenge 10
Play Doomsday Zone in Sonic and Knuckles. At the point of the final hit on the first boss, highest ring count wins. (Clarifications: You don't have to play the second boss, but a good run by this criteria will probably set you on track for a good TSC time! The second boss is not counted due to recursive ring patterns.)

This will be scored a little differently from the other free for all challenge. Scoring is as follows:

85 rings - 7 points
80 - 5
75 - 4
70 - 3
60 - 2
50 - 1
1st place, regardless of ring count - 10 points

And don't forget the Bonus Challenge is also still running!

EDIT: Round 3 giz's also attached.

There are two days left in the tournament!

Nobody has submitted for the final challenge, and the Bonus Challenge is still up for grabs!
Title: Re: Tournament 0: Testing
Post by: yse on September 07, 2007, 11:13:11 pm
The results are in!

Final Challenge
Upthorn - 40 - 0pts
SBW - 53 - 1pt
Rick - 70 - 3pts (on the very last frame!)
SJ - 77 - 4pts
Thorn - 86 - 7pts
yoshifan - 97 - 7pts
eredani - 104 - 10pts!
genus - no submission

This makes the final table as follows:

Code: [Select]
Player   | Points
Thorn*   |     28
eredani+ |     24
yoshifan |     23
SJ       |     12
Rick*    |     11
SBW      |     10
genus    |      7
Upthorn  |      3

* - indicates two points for the Bonus Challenge
+ - indicates five points for winning the Bonus Challenge

And the winner is... Thorn! *applause*

Final round challenges will be attached here, along with a couple that eredani never got around to submitting. I strongly suggest that you watch challenge 5, it is the best display of 2D prowess I have ever seen. And I've been here four years so I've seen my fair share.
