It would have been nice if Wood Zone made it in the final version, but it was cut when it was about halfway done.  Possibly a past Metropolis Zone, since the music is of Metropolis Zone.

yeah, and it had alot of stuff from metropolis apparently, with the conveyor belts and all.

i wouldve loved genocide city myself. hidden palace seemed fun too.

In fact, using the debug code, you can get up high enough to find one complete (but non-moving) conveyor belt and an incomplete one.

yeah, maybe they were going for a "time travel" effect like in sonic cd (since they were similtaniously being worked on) but they decided to can it because of deadlines.

I have heard about that.

it woulda been pretty sweet! i think i read that aquatic ruin was supposed to be green hill in the future, and emerald hill was supposed to be green hill present or something.

sonic 2 has probably been the most debated game in the genesis series for sure.

I gotta agree with that.
Some people working on Sonic 2 didn't want Hill Top in because it was too similar to Emerald Hill (I think that's what I've heard).

yeah, ive heard that too.

also, that giant emerald in hidden palace. ive heard it was the master emerald, but ive also heard that it was just a breakable item.

Yeah, it was just a breakable item.  I've gone down there using debug mode (you can't beak it in Beta), and the pipe leads to nowhere.

So its just a death trap, in other words.

what did genocide city look like? or could you tell?

There is a long version of Sonic 2, which is a hack intended to re-create the lost zones, but those re-creations were not very accurate, but accurate enough to be believable.  There's not a lot of info on what Genocide City looked like, and the ones that had worked on it have almost forgotten about it.

oh, i see. it would be cool to see it make a comeback in the new games. maybe thats what they'll call that apocalyptic city in alot of the demoes for nextgen

First ROM I downloaded (StH2 Beta). :D      ...          :(

-About Hidden Palace, the reason Sonic dies after going under the Emerald could be that the looping
was never finished. I found a slope that seemed like it should've gone from the bottom of the stage
to the top. (Sonic can't reach the top normally, and he dies if he goes down to the bottom.)

-Yeah, I heard about the time travel somewhere. What reasons are there to believe that?
(I know about Aquatic Ruin being Neo Green Hill, but I thought there was something else...)

-The Long Version hack was cool, but there were a few things I didn't like. The main one was that
one Dust Hill stage is really confusing. I spent a long time trying to get through it the first time,
and then I just ended up forgetting when I went back to replay the game.
Also, there were a few other things that seemed like "cheap challenge", and Genocide City
wasn't how I expected it. (It didn't look as nice as some other stages, and it wasn't factory-like.)

-Hidden Palace could've been a really cool and cool-looking stage, with 3-D-looking backgrounds,
water slides (which, as I remember, didn't work right in Long Version), glittery jewels
(do I sound too much like Rouge? :P ), and the cave design.
Sonic and Knuckles didn't make up for this. It was a regular part of the game (instead of being
the secret stage for getting the Emeralds, like I hoped before I knew much about the game),
it was smaller, it was simpler, and it just didn't look as cool overall.

I was hoping for Genocide City to be a dark, kinda creepy looking place honestly. Some flames and stuff.
