Title: S3&K Question
Post by: Thorn on February 02, 2006, 05:19:48 pm
Okay, I need someone with a good knowledge of level layout and the GCN or Genesis version of S3&K to answer this one.

In Launch Base 2 for Sonic, there's an area early in the level where you can spin dash off of a ramp to get onto the ceiling for a shortcut.  But an invisible wall stops you in some versions.

Sonic 3 (Genesis): Wall
S3&K (Genesis): __________
Sonic & Knuckles Collection: No wall
Sonic Jam: No wall
Sonic Mega (S3): Wall (I think)
Sonic Mega (S3&K): ___________
Sonic Gems (S3): Wall

Since most people get their time records for this level using one of those versions I don't know about, can anybody tell me if there's a wall in the way on those versions?  I don't want to submit a time if the "official" versions won't let me take that route.

Wait wut Sonic 3 in Gems? O_o

Anyways I don't really know the answer, but it might be different in S3K. There is one main difference in S3K LB2 (opposed to S3 LB2) that I know, but that's at the end. (In S3K, the clock stops after the first boss and starts again at the beginning of the second.)

Don't know about this top of screen glitch though.

The map doesn't really give away anything from what I can see though. (And why would it.) Unless it has a glitch similar to that of the Sky Sanctuary screenwrap glitch, where you can't see yourself but you can hit an obstacle (or wall), and I can see one place where that's possible. That doesn't really explain a difference between two versions though. >_>

Yep.  Playing it takes you straight to Launch Base 2 with a 15 minute timer that won't reset upon dying.  It's museum unlockable #303 in the North American version, if memory serves.

What I'm asking about is a shortcut where you run along the ceiling.  In some versions of LB2 an invisible wall stops you, but in others the wall isn't there.  I use Sonic & Knuckles Collection so that I can switch windows to submit times.  Because the clock stops in S3&K, I'm assuming that's where most of the time records come from, and the state of the wall there is the "official" one.  If the wall isn't there in S3&K, then I've tied mike89's record of 1:51.  If the wall is there, I'll have to take another route.

Actually, you needn't talk about the Gems version because the Gems version is a direct port of the regular Sonic Mega Collection version, just with a timer and a save state.

Just thought I'd say that.

From what I remember, something similar was present in S3 and S3&K, namely the Balloon Park glitch. It worked in S3 and not in S3&K...I think.

However, in this case you cannot run on the ceiling in the S3 version.

Nope.

The clock stops after the first boss, IIRC - you have to beat both bosses to finish the level.

^I know that, I've been playing this long enough.  I did beat both bosses.  I'm still wondering about that invisible wall, not the timer.

There's a jump to the right of Sonic, and a quick spin dash puts you on the ceiling of the level.  Some versions have an invisible wall that stops Sonic from running all the way across the ceiling, others don't.  I'm sure someone on this site has a ROM of S3&K; can someone open it up and take a look?

That image doesn't show up; going to its source URL doens't help either.

I figured out where it is, though; S3K still has it as a wall, and neither water nor lightning shields can clear the top of it.

Okay, thanks a lot.  Going around it shouldn't take too much longer.

Sorry about the image not showing; I posted it on a members-only site, but I didn't think that it would stop another person from seeing a picture.  Just in case I need to submit a pic again, I tried somewhere else.  Does it show now?

I vidded and posted a 1:57 run through the level using a legal route.  W00t... and such...

Unfortunately, the videos page made a dead link again.  This is getting really old...
