Title: Tropes in video games.
Post by: magnum12 on March 04, 2008, 04:07:09 pm
Found something interesting about cliches or common themes. (Thank tvtrops for this.) Its called tropes and it applies to TV, anime, and games. Some of these are actually pretty funny. For this topic, request a video game (or series) and I will write all the tropes (and examples) that the game is guilty of. This seems like a fun topic so lets give it a go.

My first highlight will be the Sonic series. Sonic actually has a trope named after it, "Sonic Syndrome" which represents a gradual or immediate fall from grace when transistioning from 2d to 3d. Other tropes include (stuff from the comics and tv shows are ignored:
1. Arabian Nights Days (SSR)
2. Because Destiny says (prophecy junk)
3. Character Derailment (Knuckles and Egg Man)
4. Classic cheat code
5. Clingy jealous girl (Amy)
6. Colony Drop (Ark)
7. Compliation release
8. Cool shades (Egg Man)
9. Dark Magical Girl (Shadow, one of the extremely rare male examples) This trope is an anime one that embodies the fear of being alone and its effects are manifested in someone who can be best described as a dark twin of the main character (often more powerful in combat). These character types are almost always redeemed through an emotional heart to heart talk.
10. Darker & Edgier
11. Dead Little Sister (Maria)
12. Death Course (hazards in most unlikely of places)
13. Eleventh Hour Super power (need I say it)
13. Enemy Mine (hero and villian work together)
14. Executive Meddling
15. Five Man Band (the main 5)
16. Flanderization (too many examples)
17. Floating Advice reminder (SA and beyond)
18. Genre Roulette
19. Goggles do nothing (Egg Man)
20. Gratitous English (voice acting)
21. Green Hill Zone (lush, green easy stage, Sonic's is the one its named after)
22. Half Dressed Cartoon animal
23. Hostage for Mc Guffin (SA2)
24. It seemed like a good idea at the time (Knuckles tactics with the emerald)
25. Killer App (Genesis and Dreamcast games)
26. Lets you and him fight (Sonic vs whatever character Sega throws at him)
27. Mac Guffin Delivery service (Egg Man does this in SA)
28. Mad Scientist
29. Mecha Monster (Metal Sonic)
30. Mercy invincibility (rings)
31. Multiple Endings
32. Pallete Swap (Hedgehogs)
33. People Jars (animals in robots)
34. Personality powers (Sonic, Knuckles)
35. Plot coupon (Chaos emeralds)
36. Power Trio (Team Sonic)
37. Punny Name (Tails and Egg Man)
38. Strange Bedfellows (Cannon's Core)
39. Underwater Ruins
40. Villian Decay (Egg Man)
41. Wave Motion Gun (Eclipse Cannon)
42. Wheel o Feet
43. White Gloves

1. All just a dream (Mario 2)
2. Big Boo's Haunt (stage predominately populated by undead, named after Mario 64)
3. Bottomless pits (everywhere)
4. Butt Monkey (Luigi, always the victim of abuse)
5. Clown Car Base (Bowser's clown copter)
6. Dinosaurs are dragons (Yoshi)
7. Extreme Omnivore (Yoshi)
8. Fluffy Cloud Heaven (Mario 3)
9. Goomba Stomp (now a dead trope)
10. Gratuitous English (Shine Get)
11. He knows about timed hits (Mario RPG invented this one)
12. In a single bound (invented by Mario)
13. Lethal Lava Land (named after Mario 64 stage)
14. The Mario (jack of all trades character)
15. Minus World (awesome stage you're not supposed to go to)
16. Mordor (area around Bowser's castle)
17. Save the Princess
18. Shifting Sand Land (named after Mario 64 stage)
19. Slippy Slidey Ice Land (any ice themed world)
20. Unwinnable (minus world)
21. Warp Whistle (Mario 3)
22. White Gloves

I've definately got to do Disgaea by next week since that has a trope named after it.

You're stealing this from tvtropes.org <_<

If you're gonna do this, at least point out where you're getting it from.  Still, that's a good idea.  I'm gonna check up Mischief Makers for myself.

EDIT: How dare they ignore one of Treasure's gems!?!

EDIT 2: Oh, you mentioned you stole this from TV Tropes (not that that's a bad thing)!  The site's fun.  It's like Wikipedia in the "You'll take forever looking through it" tactic.

Lol, Mario either invented or got-named-after-him most of the ones he uses.

Truly genre-defining shit, right there.

Clearly Sonic should have Bottomless Pit. >_>

Also dare I ask what Pokémon brings up...?

Well, it still is technically a wiki.

Anyhow, feel free to look it up yourself. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Pokémon)  There's a small list of game-related ones.

Also, heh.  Unrelated to the topic, they have a speed run article.

Here's the Disgaea one. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Disgaea
Seems the Love Freak Trope was actually named after this game. Not mentioned are the Butt Monkey (Prinnies) and Chick Magnet (Adell is the featured quote on this one) tropes.
I've suspected that cheating bastard trope for years with pokemon. Also guilty of guide dang it (IVs and EVs NEED a strategy guide in order to even know they exist and how to use them).

Well, it isn't necessary in order to beat the game.  Just for competition.

And heh.  Love Freak.  Of course.  I need to finish that game.

And every other Sonic game overrules that BS.

Have you ever been to Bielefeld?
Do you know anybody who has ever been to Bielefeld?
Do you get this joke I found when skimming that site?

OK I have found a major problem looking at the Pokemon one. And it's not even Poke-related.

One of the Poke-tropes was "Replacement Goldfish" referring to the creation of Mewtwo. I read up on it, and thought "wait, I know one that's not here!"

It doesn't exist in Star Trek (or TNG either). And it should. And that would be the TNG episode Inheritance (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Inheritance), where Dr. Soong (Data's creator) creates an android version of his comatose wife (who never regained consciousness). I DEMAND RECOGNITION.

Plenty of us know at least one that's not in there.  As I said, it's a wiki.  And people can forget stuff in a wiki.
