I got Sonic Riders yesterday, and i'm pretty impressed. It took me a few hours just to get used to it, but now i've beat story mode and I might try some speed runs if I get alot better at the game.
I noticed you can do a boost out of a "slide." Does this mean you can snake like in Mario Kart?
-
No, you'd run out of air.
Sonic R >>> Sonic Riders

No, you'd run out of air.
Ah yeah... fair enough.
Sonic R >>> Sonic Riders
Everyone keeps telling me that, I have yet to play it though. Oh well, I like Riders anyway.
-
XD I played riders once and got 8th place every time on the first race of the story mode :(
most impossible game ever
-
I found you can get good at it fast just by playing the story and missions.
after that, its all about which character to use and which gear. Then finding out the courses secrets and stuff. Then there's the vids on the site to speed things up >_>
-
IIRC, there is one board that can snake, but it needs INCREDIBLE snaking even to be just barely above average.
-
It is a great game despite the fact that it's quite underrated. I actually haven't played it in quite a while as I've had it revoked from me ATM...
Anyway, the vids should help with learning how to master each of the tracks. Otherwise, feel free to ask anyone of us regulars (or at least used-to-be regulars) who still play the game (for some, just remember what it's like as it's been a while) for advice.

There is. I had a vid of it on YouTube, but most people know what happened.
Anyway, since it doesn't have boost, snaking is the only way to gain enough speed to keep up with the slow-movers.
-
Sonic Riders isn't too bad. I can't freaking get Super Sonic but I can do some damn good speedruns!

Ok, thanks. All of the vids here that i've tried to view are in wma format, and don't work for me. I've searched youtube for speed runs that I could learn things from, but without much success.

Ok I uploaded a video onto youtube of me playing Riders. And it is a bad time, so I need some help with it. Advice would be appreciated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNdsTFYr1MQ
Also, just wondering whether most of you use the same character and Extreme Gear all the time, or do you use different ones depending on the course you're racing?
Sorry for double posting.
-
The majority of the records were set with the High Booster. The character varies based on what course is being raced on.

here's one of my runs from this place.
also I suggest getting VLC player to view everything on this site.

I agree with SJ on VLC Player. It's really the way to go.
And yeah, speaking from experience, High Booster is key for basically all records. I believe there is one I've obtained without it but I don't recall...
Anyway, let me know which stages you need help on if you're going for the records as I'll gladly share my knowledge. :)

Green Cave used Destroyer and Digital Dimension used Darkness. All the others have the record using High Booster.

Awesome vid! And i'm downloading VLC now.

Green Cave used Destroyer and Digital Dimension used Darkness.? All the others have the record using High Booster.
Seeing as I still hold the Green Cave record, I have to say it was done with the High Booster as well. It's just really cumbersome there.
One of these days I'll return to the game. Preferably when my GCN is in the same room as my computer.

Well, I looked at egg's comment and assumed that's what the record was set using as well.

most impossible game ever
I got past the first two races on my first try (don't remember what my rank was), but it got harder quickly.
Some later levels, like the Babylon Garden courses, were pretty frustrating the first time.
But like other 3-D Sonics, the game got easy after I played it once.
My opinion on Sonic Riders is that the gameplay itself is just about the only good thing about it, but that it's still a fun game.
Sonic R is too short and easy, but it's also fun. And I got good at time-attacking. :P

Yep. It's pretty neat, I was the one who basically introduced High Booster. But eventually High Booster dominated even more courses than I would have thought.
It's a wonder that there are even any stages to begin with that still haven't been broken by High Booster.
Cool thing about Green Cave though is that it was one of the very last stages to become High Booster-ized.
It's also one of the only stages where I have no idea how to use the High Booster in. Hence my beaten record and outdated strat.

That's the thing about Riders, really. It's not hard at all, it's just not explained how you're supposed to play the game.
Call it a flaw. (hell, I do)

I'm really good with Shadow with Darkness and NiGHTS with Darkness(okay every character with Darkness).

Just wondering, what's so good about Darkness?
-
I don't know...I always use it for some reason and if I'm not then I'm using a cover(Cover-S, Cover-F, Cover-P)...:)
-
but Egg, my vid on here uses High Booster and that beat your time...then Quartz kicked my ass and I still dont know what he did :/
also I used Heavy Bike in Digital Dimension, but that Sephiroth guy used High Booster I think to get his lap times.
but yeah, High Booster dominates, after that its just who you use to get the good times. Too bad I didn't keep at this game, I could have figured out some more courses, but the ones I had trouble with I didn't like very much and gave up on improving on those even more...also rotating sticks all the time can get tiresome fast :/

The thing about Darkness is it uses up slightly less air. Also, though unrelated, the Heavy Bike's boost speed is above average, with level 3 topping at 230, and the Gambler gives you double rings if you get first place
-
*OMG the Truth* I use it because: )1- See Quartz's last comment )2- I seem to go amazingly fast evrytime I well do anything )3- I know how to control my character with skates and Darkness is one of my favs. Happy now?!

I thought he used High Booster also.
Right Quartz?

Heavy Bike has the same boost as the average gear. Except at level 1. At level 1, it does a 210 boost instead of 200. ^_^

My mistake, possibly. However, I distinctly remember level three better than a normal level 3

As you can tell, it's a complicated game as far as competition is concerned but when you do make great strides in the game, speaking from experience, you feel proud knowing you made an accomplishment that was hard to obtain in the first place (not necessarily a record, just pretty high up on the rankings but for records, you'll feel ecstatic especially when the records are really hard to beat).
