Title: Okay, f'real now, drafting for TUSC here, comments please.
Post by: Thorn on November 05, 2006, 11:03:16 pm
Okies, so RPG, back in the Sonic DIY topic, was all "lolz my Jungle Coaster design pwns u".
And we all thought it was pretty nifty.

Until I stumbled across a unfinished Sonic 2 hack, Tohaka, that had an even more insane level.  I showed it to RPG, but he begged to differ.

So we ask you.  We present the vids, you tell us.  Which is more intricate?

(read as: this shizzle will likely be on TUSC (The Unofficial Sonic Center), RPG's TSC4 subsite for Sonic fan games and hacks.  We are drafting competition now, do you have the slightest interest in homebrew levels?  We'll compete in more than just coaster levels, we just wanna end this lol-gument.)

Here's (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OO5025XP) mine.  I apologize for the unusual format, and for using MegaUpload, but my PC was being a bastard and wouldn't run Windows Movie Maker, which has easy scaling of .wmv movies.  Put all the files in the .zip in one place, then open the HTML document inside.

*watches RPG show off his TSC space*
*makes fist*

Thorn pretty much summed it up.

I somehow manage to showcase JC in this short vid, although it barely scratches at the surface of the intricacies and multiple routes.

Thou needeth to playeth to fully comprehendeth its awesomeness....eth.

RPG's zip says it's corrupt. But I played the Tohaka level and... intricate maybe, but awful indubitably. It plays itself. :|

^Such is the nature of the lol-gument.

As TUSC nears, actual GAMEPLAY vids will be force- er, displayed to possible competitors.  Aita hasn't been here in a while, and as S2 champ I hope a nice hack might actually pull him into competing again.

And RPG should have it fixed now.

What the hell was that?

Okay, I am debugging Windows Movie Maker ASAP if I hafta top that.  Iono why it crashes, but once it's fixed, goofy audio and captions here I come.

douglas' Great Forest wins cause it's so buggy and fun to TA.

Is it that buggy?  Not that I'm going to fix it, but meh >_>

Seriously, I'll say why RPG's level is better.  It has more opportunity for time-attacking - most of TCP consists of having springs carry your momentum for you.  RPG's just looks better for TA purposes

Okay, now that these vids (one more than the other, way to score RPG!) have piqued interest a bit, it's high time I cut to the point.

We're drafting The Unofficial Sonic Center competitors, and we wanna know who gives a rat's ass about this kind of stuff.

Games we're competing in for sure:
Fan Games - Sonic DIY, Sonic: Time Attacked, Sonic Robo Blast 2 (+ The Mystic Realm)
Hacks: Sonic 1 MegaMix, Sonic 2 Delta II (new levels), Sonic 1 & Knuckles/Tails

Games we are looking at and judging (mostly Sonic 2 hacks):
Sonic 2: Advanced Edit, Sonic2Z, Sonic 2 SMTP, Project Shadow, Sonic Robo Blast 2: Botanic Serenity (NiGHTS mod), douglas's fan game, Sonic Nexus, whatever looks snazzy

Need more info, say so.  Else please tell us if you love fan works and would care to Time Attack them at TUSC.

I probably won't be interested in TAing, but if you have a section of the site for discussing fan game ideas/concepts and submissions of those ideas for feed back, I'm in.

Have played Project Shadow, personally Im against putting this up, but Thorn could persuade me possibly maybe.

Sonic 2 Advanced Edit is being considered at this point~

What's wrong with Project Shadow? :( I actually like it.

EDIT: Also, RPG's vid was pwn, haven't seen yours yet Thorn, so no vote for me. :(

Eh, it just didnt have a good 'feel' IMO

Also lack of guns saddened me <_<

Heh, yea, a 2D Sonic with gunplay would have been pwn, eh, well, the very least interesting..

Actually, one of my ideas involves 2D Shadow gameplay with guns. Here's how it would work.
-Summary: A hybrid of Contra style shooting controls (applies to all ranged weapons) with an element system like some of the recent Castlevania games.
-Details: Each weapon is of at least one attribute; slashing i.e swords, double glave (which is a long pole with a fang like metal edge, double implies one blade on each side), bludgeon (homing attack, club like weapons), piercing (spear, cross bow), ballistic (assualt rifle, SMG), fire (wrist mounted flame thrower), explosive (bazooka, etc), electric, and energy (Black Arms weapons). Each enemy and boss would have weaknesses and resistances to weapons of different attributes. To keep weapon groups balanced, each group also has its own strengths and weaknesses. Melee weapons would have good attack power and infinite ammo, but have short range and average cool down time between attacks. Ballistic weapons (relative to other ranged weapons) would have high ammo counts, the fastest cooldown, and excellent range, but the weakest attack power in the group. Fire weapons would have good attack power, and do lingering damage, but have short range and low ammo. Explosive weapons would have the highest attack power, excellent range, and good area of effect, but have slow cooldown times and very low ammo counts. Eletric weapons would have high ammo counts and the ability to arc over and damage nearby enemies with one shot, but their attack power and speed would be inversely related (need to charge them to get a good result). Energy weapons would have no weaknesses and few resistant enemies but no strengths and few enemies weak to them. Of course there would be unlockable joke weapons such as hedge clippers (slashing), spring loaded boxing gloves (bludgeon), frozen sword fish (piercing), rocket launchers that fire chainsaws that explode on impact (explosive, super ridiculous weapon), and the SBG 10,000 (parody of a weapon from Doom).

Personally, I'd have to suggest "When Tails Gets Bored" -- downloadable at http://sfghq.emulationzone.org/view_info.php?sec=1&id=45

Has some great gimmick levels in it, and it's pretty hard.  Of course I suck at 2-D games, but at least this one I found fun.
