Awhile ago I wrote about some severe framerate troubles with Unleashed and their potential to sink the game. Well, we're within a month of release now, which means the game is pretty much in its final form, and the verdict is in (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/15/tgs-08-sonic-unleashed-meets-us-halfway/):
"The PlayStation 3 version's appalling framerate [is] a shame, because the Xbox 360 version boasts a brisk framerate that compliments the game's arresting and vivid graphics"
So, 360 Sonic fans can break out the champagne, and PS3 owners have yet another reason to regret their purchase.
Meanwhile, Douglas and genus's merry parade staggers onward, with the Top Ten Catchphrases (http://www.soniccenter.org/forum/index.php/topic,947.msg39460.html#msg39460) next to come.
update: Shadow Jacky's put comparison videos (http://www.soniccenter.org/forum/index.php?topic=3781.msg39519#msg39519) later in the topic if you want to check it out for yourself.
-
Well that's better than nothing.
Guess I know which next-gen console I'm buying now. awesome.jpg
-
This game is also coming out on the wii. Can somebody please tell me which would be better, the 360 version or the wii version?
Sorry for sounding like a noob but I don't understand all this framerate/technical stuff and I want to get the right one. I don't want to be disappointed :(
-
Well framerate isn't a complicated thing, it's basically how smoothly it runs. 15 frames per second means 15 pictures every second, 60 means 60 (30 is the American TV standard). More is better. If a game is described as having a bad framerate it means the graphics get ahead of what the game can handle, so the framerate drops often. This means that the whole thing was coded poorly so you should probably stay away.
However, the Wii version is going to be basically a different game compared to the PS3/Xbox360 ones, and we've got bugger-all word on it so far, so wait.
-
ok then thanks Crowbar :D
I have a feeling I will end up getting the 360 one but I'll wait anyway.

PS3: http://www.jeuxvideo.tv/video/sonic-unleashed.html#view:263212
360: http://www.jeuxvideo.tv/video/sonic-unleashed.html#view:263192
Wii: http://www.jeuxvideo.tv/video/sonic-unleashed.html#view:263214
Judge for yourselves.
-
Hmmm, well, none of them look spotless in terms of framerates. There were notable chugs in intense parts in both the 360 and Wii versions. However, the PS3 version was chugging ALL THE DAMN TIME. That's disgusting.
-
Two comments on the Wii video:
One, is it just me, or does the High Europe stage look incredibly easy?
Two, the shot of that - thing - at the end looks bizarrely similar to one Midna....

To paste from an earlier topic, you'll also want to keep this in mind-
PS3/360 - Sonic Unleashed on the "Hedgehog Engine"
PS2/Wii - Unleashed lite, with the same motifs but different level design by Dimps and worse graphics
-
Was that different level design thing ever proven? Because it still sounds lame.
Anyhow, the game looks pretty linear (Not surprising) with a few slight alternate methods of the same route, but I'm watching idiots, so...
Also I wonder if you can slam down on the boxes two minutes and forty seconds in on the Wii video.
Also it seems like boosting is required to stay fast in the Wii version. Bummer.
-

Yes, an early trailer of the 360/PS3 version shows a totally different stage for the level in the Wii video.
Also I wonder if you can slam down on the boxes two minutes and forty seconds in on the Wii video.
Actually, this is the only video I've seen where somebody doesn't slam through the boxes in the floor, and wall kicks upwards instead. Unfortunately, he misses the homing attack chain on the the higher route shortly after, and the dash ring he hits pushes him onto the route that everybody who bashed the boxes ended up on.
-

One: It might be the final level design, it might not be and was just something to show at TGS.
Two: I don't think so...needs hips *shot*

Wii version trailer. (http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14242720/sonic-unleashed/videos/suwiitraileroct15.html)
-
holy shit what happened to the quality?
glad we got to see more stages though. mykonos doesn't look as vibrant, but meh...
also its official, the wii version will have no score charts.
-
Well I have to say that does look pretty nice. I'm impressed by how well the Wii version graphics hold up against the Hedgehog Engine. Wonder if the PS2 version will look the same, though.
-
Crowbar, if anything the Wii version is the PS2 version with wiimote control bits.
also new trailer!
Egypt: http://www.sega.co.uk/games/?t=EnglishUK&g=230&v=965
some new Wii version screens: http://ga-forum.com/showpost.php?p=13219376&postcount=172
I don't know who the kid is in the first shot, but he's on the character page at the official site. (he's only a silhouette)
-
Video comments:
Wii Trailer:
OK, so the Greece graphics do look rather toned down. But otherwise, I don't think High Europe looks quite as easy anymore, plus now that I think about it, were the early levels of the Genesis games all that difficult? Well, I mean, Green Hill/Emerald Hill/Angel Island/Mushroom Hill were pretty easy. I really can't tell anymore whether High Europe or Mykonos is the first stage of the Wii version.
Egypt Trailer:
Now THIS looks somewhat more difficult for some reason. I can't really place it, it just does. The music kinda stinks though ... I mean come on, Keys the Ruin is due for a reprise any day now.... <_<
-
well damn this pretty much showed a lot more than I expected.
http://www.sega.co.uk/sonicunleashed/uk/index.php
search around for new gameplay vids and you get to hear music from the stages of both day and night.
-
Wow, quite informative for an official site. I'm impressed.
-
With 48 Blu-ray movies and constant use of media networking to my television, I sure do regret my PS3 purchase.
-
With 48 Blu-ray movies and constant use of media networking to my television, I sure do regret my PS3 purchase.
And the fact that any 360 game worth getting has ended up on PC amirite
-
Very pleased from the site's information that, whilst advertised as such, this game does NOT occur in the real world - each location is given a fictional name, flag and description.
New names:
Apotos - Greece
Spagonia - High Europe
Chun-nan - China
Shamar - Egypt
Empire City - probably New York (because a similar stage has been confirmed)
Holoska - somewhere in the Arctic; possibly Siberia
Mazuri - looks like Africa, most likely the stage we saw in the first leak
Abadat - by location, probably Australia (also could be the leaked stage)
Further notes:
The Werehog stages seem to include these yellow crystals that don't appear in the other videos for some reason. The Egypt stage video shows a wizard-like enemy, and a shot of Sonic with some kind of fire powerup.
Site refers to "unlockable areas"; whether these are in-stage areas unlockable by powerup, or more Hidden Island / SA2B Green Hill isn't stated.
Jump pads a la SA/SADX confirmed; these appear to have controller button symbols on them for the actual jumping.
One part refers to his "new friend's lost memory". I don't want to think of how this has manifested itself before.
-
Australia stage, huh? Can't wait to see how they develop that further.
-
I must say, the Xbox 360 build looks absolutely amazing. It may be linear, but all I want from a Sonic game is a great time and it looks like Sonic Unleashed is going to supply that demand! :)
-
Well said.
Honestly, Unleashed is really holding up and I'd buy it if it weren't for the skepticism surrounding the whole Werehog concept.
I mean, it's not that it's slow or anything. Cause it's not in my books. It's just... different. But I'm afraid that the story behind it may complicate the gameplay which was the case with SatSR, imo (but don't get me wrong, it's a great game).
I'll be renting it before a purchase, for sure. No matter how badly I want it.
What'll interest me the most is how critics will recieve it. May I go ahead and predict IGN's inevitable 6.5 score? kthnx...
-
Unleashed looks great so far from alll the videos I saw on youtube and the sega site, but I probably going to wait a month to buy this game.
-
http://www.gamingexcellence.com/ps3/games/1409/p20081020.shtml
review site claiming that the 360/PS3 builds have increased framerates to 40 since E3 and Sega is hoping for 60 by its release.
believe it or not...
-
WUT
SEGA GREW A BRAIN
No really ... sure, they still need to fulfill this statement, but the sheer fact that they're saying it means they've listened to the populace for a bit.
-
Any word on the load times?
I mean seriously, the PS3 vid had the same 20-second loading as S06. Those type of problems shouldn't exist anymore.
-
New trailer already...
at the rate all of the levels are going to be shown by the game's release :(
Abadat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjIi69bTaMQ
-
I've found my favorite level in the game, methinks.
But, I don't think this game is only going to have eight levels by a long shot. More like multiple acts per zone, I think. I mean really - that trailer is really darn schizo - about half of it is on an ocean/lagoon, while the other is in what looks like a desert/jungle canyon. Unless the level really is that dang huge, this has to be multiple zones. Besides, keep in mind how much we knew about SSR by the time it came out. IIRC, we had seen everything except ... what, Skeleton Dome, Night Palace, and Lost Prologue.
Oh, and somebody REALLY messed up the sound effects on that. Possibly stating the obvious, but they accidentally used the lose ring effect for gaining rings.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, just realized this too. The first Spagonia video featured what looked like a boss fight; yet there's video of the entire Spagonia level (Wii version) on YouTube from TGS. No bosses there. While it's possible that the boss locations have differed between the 360 and Wii versions, I think it hints more to there being multiple parts to each area - maybe Secret Rings style?
-
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/923/923923p1.html
The IGN UK impressions are up. Mostly positive. The Rush style sections are awesome. The two weak spots are adventure fields and the were hog sections. That being said, the brawling sections aren't exactly a disaster either. Competent but not sparkling.
-
May I go ahead and predict IGN's inevitable 6.5 score? kthnx...
At risk of cursing it, I don't see this happening anymore.
-
ok I'mma update this probably for the last time since the last vid shown was ps360 Abadat...
Wii stuff;
Shamar: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/42016.html
Chun-Nan: http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14242720/sonic-unleashed/videos/uleashchunanwii.html
ps360;
redone Mazuri and more Werehog: http://www.gamespot.com/shows/on-the-spot/ (skip to 39:00)
if you don't like gamespot or it's not there: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BgFauOj7f2E (the gamespot vid is of better quality though)
I don't think I'm forgetting anything...also the Wii version is still on track for release, but there's talk that the other 2 might be delayed.
-
Before taking the time to watch SJ's new goodies, I have this for you all:
http://www.sonicstadium.org/media-n-stuff/unleashed-night-of-the-living-werehog (http://www.sonicstadium.org/media-n-stuff/unleashed-night-of-the-living-werehog)
WHAT.
THE.
FRED.
Please watch before continuing to read said post....
What does this mean for the storyline?!?! Does Sonic STAY as a werehog? Or is this something referencing the game? The graphics look VERY similar to the cutscenes we've seen so far, though it could merely be the same team working on it. But still ... wow.
EDIT: Looked at SJ's stuff.
Did you catch the part in the Gamespot vid where he found a medal and UNLOCKED A DAYTIME STAGE?! That kinda surprised me.
Experience points confirmed, not surprised at all.
Night enemies called "The Fear"? How original. <_<
Background music every time they refer to the Werehog is from Disney's Haunted Mansion, if you listen really carefully. I was amused.
And, in my honest opinion, Shamar Wii looks FAR better than the 360 version. Something about it ... it really seems to fit a lot better.
-
I'm in the mood for a really twisted, disturbing, nightmare fuel joke right now based on the last post. If he stays a Were Hog, then let me put a little Halloween twist on the ending. Muaaahahahaha!!!
Amy: S, Sonic...? Don't you recognize me?
*Grab
Amy: N, no...stop! Please don't!
*Riiiiipppppp!
Amy: Gyaaaahhh!!
Tails: A, Amy...Ah, ahh! Noo! Ugaahhh!
*Slash* The sound of bones crunching, lips smacking, and swallowing occurs in the background.
Sonic: I am a being of solitude.
-
something else for those that want a little extra...
ftp://segapr.segaamerica.com/SEGA_GAMES/Sonic%20Unleashed/
trailers to Sonic Unleashed including a new one for Mazuri. The files are quite large and consider the fact that probably a lot of people are downloading them as well.
edit: if no one wants to bother with waiting...
Mazuri: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP369aMPlyM
-
lol magnum, nice Disgaea reference there. I must admit the first time I saw that it scared the living shit out of me.
-
well this isn't a sega trailer, but the point still stands...there's only 1 level left to show of Unleashed...
Holoska: http://www.gamersyde.com/stream_9266_en.html
-
Just to throw this out there: Wikipedia (that most trustworthy of sources) claims that Sega has announced NINE zones. So there's more than one left.
EDIT: And that ice looks really darn annoying.
-
its either the 8 shown on their sites plus a final zone, or 9 like you said plus a final zone.
-
Ok, Sonic Team has Taken Down The 2 Videos i Found one youtube,
But I have Found the Download Link (http://ruliweb.empas.com/data/rulinews/read.htm?num=16554). One thing, The site is in Korean. :\
(This is Not the download link, it just gives you Different Videos to view. the last two in both the HD and SD lists are the Sonic Unleashed Videos)
-
Sega went fast there - the Apotos video has already been removed. But to anyone who saw it, I would like to point out ONCE AGAIN that I'm theorizing there to be multiple stages per locale. Did anyone catch the "1" on the stage portal? That must either be referring to Apotos as the first level, or the first stage of the Apotos "zone".
Also the blatantly obvious medallion behind a pillar to the right of this portal. And what looked like a spring in the first hub area.
-
after actually thinking about it...why the hell doesn't the wii version have hubs? they better not screw over the wii/ps2 owners of any extra bonuses and crap.
-
Where/when did we find out it didn't? This is new to me....
-
Heh... let's hope that each one is broken in it's own ways so everyone has to have both versions... HA!
-
it may end up being the case Aitamen.
also info about the hubs was days ago from some UK site or something. The wii/ps2 version is going to have point and click maps.
-
Heh, Dimps strikes again, no? But how detailed exactly could these maps be? Unless by "map" they mean "globe" <_<
-
What's wrong with not having hubs?
Saw one in a video and it looked boring. They were only half-welcome in Sonic Adventure as it is, has nothing been learned from Sonic 06?
-
Hubs in Sonic games would work if they actually ever did anything interesting. :(
-
so far they just have you talking to people and there are medals. if anything there are the upgrades that I think are still in the game and the stages.
-
EDIT: And that ice looks really darn annoying.
That ice looks BEAUTIFUL, Minus. I resent that.

A new preview and the Desert stage name (Savannah Citadel) revealed.
http://previews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/2151/Sonic-Unleashed/p1/ (http://previews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/2151/Sonic-Unleashed/p1/)
We started out playing a new level called Savannah Citadel that exists in the Mazarie area of the game. To get there, we spun our big globe which acts as a world map to Mazarie, which is a stand-in here for Africa. There was an option to visit the village which we did at first by accident; we were supposed to click on stage select. I wont talk about that lest it get me into trouble.

nice additions chaoRC

Can anyone translate the Dailymotion video?
About 8:30 in, Sonic responds to something Chip said by LOOKING STRAIGHT AT THE CAMERA.
14:15 CONFIRMS it: it actually says "acte 2" on that level - dunno why the portal seems to have a "1" on it though. I take it "acte 1" was the "tutorial" stage ... which was still ranked O.o
EDIT: And at 6:45 in the Gamekyo video, Amy has YET ANOTHER "Oh look, it's a hedgehog, it must be Sonic!" moment. Except it is Sonic. Except it doesn't look like Sonic.

Tru dat, music owns.
But what is going on? I know it's probably just me but ... why do I honestly think the Wii versions for most of these levels look BETTER than the 360 versions?!?!

Yeah, I've gotta agree with Minus. So far, the only disadvantage I see the Wii having is its grainier graphics.

"Exclusive Missouri walkthrough"? Uh, hello?
-
Just thought you guys might like to know, while downloading the extra missions for Sonic 06 from the Xbox Live marketplace last night and tonight, I noticed something different. They have just added the Sonic Unleashed demo which is free. I tried to download it but it said I run out of free space on which is BS, I have plenty of space.
Just thought I'll tell you guys so if anybody out there with a 360 and has Xbox Live can download it and have a look at it before thinking about purchasing it :)
-
They have just long ago added the Sonic Unleashed demo E3 footage which is free.
Fixed, I'd presume. Nobody on GameFAQs seems to be talking about a demo, so I've gotta assume you're looking at the trailer instead.
-
Possibly I don't know. I can't remember what the description said now my memory is appalling :P
My mind has been somewhere else tonight, something very good happened to me tonight which made me a very happy little girl ^_^ I've been a very down lately so just ignore me I'm not thinking straight. I think that'll be my last post on this topic.

OSNAP A CITY THAT ISN'T EITHER UNDER CONSTRUCTION OR TOTALLY DEMOLISHED
Aaand there's eight. Whomever said that all eight zones would be trailer'd before the game's release ('cuz I don't care to look up who said it) was right. Though, the Wii video again seems to strongly imply that there's multiple acts per stage ... I sure hope so, or else Sega once again has proven it's idiocy by revealing THIS MUCH of the game.
-
Empire City is like I imagined it to be...except not all within the sky. Still it looks pretty damn awesome.
-
Drifting and no intolerable lyrics? :o

Drifting and no intolerable lyrics? :o
Have you not heard Endless Possibility?
-
Just randomly throwing this out there: After noting that the Mazuri Day music has similarities to the S1GG end music, I'm going to throw out that the Apotos Day music has similarities to one of the Mean Bean Machine tracks. I think the Genesis version, but I'm not sure. Don't ask me which one, I haven't taken the time to figure that out yet.... <_<
-
*cries*
this is one of the days where my childhood feels the pain...

So? Who has the game? ISITGOODISITGOODISITGOODISITGOOD
-
Based on hands on impressions, I'm going to predict that SU will receive an average score of 7.5 give or take 3/4th a point. The day levels have received nothing put positive impressions so far. Based on game play footage, the were hog sections don't really look that bad at all. Competent but not stellar.
-
I'm expecting around 8.5 ... relative to other games in the series, this seems to be quite the improvement. Only stat I've found so far is the user reviews on GameSpot, average user review of - get this - 9.0 for the Wii version. Though I don't know if that opens before the game's release or not....
-
Anyone know if a TA mode is going to be in here?
or if it'll record your max rings/scores, like the SA games?
I've done a bit of reading, but it's all about the graphics and storylines... of which, I have no real interest... I'll be getting this game, it seems, JUST to TA it... and I'm cool with that...
-
It's been confirmed that Wii version is missing two stages: Empire City and Mizori. (post from someone else)
Gentlemen, the guide has been leaked onto the net with details on the Wii and PS2 versions and the news is grim on there. More on that later. For now, lets get to unlockables and the final boss!
[spoilers written in small font; copy/paste to see for yourself]
-Final Level: Eggmanland. It contains SEVERAL boss fights. First is Eggman in a mech. You fight him as the warehog. Next is a level where you fight Dark Gaia as normal Sonic, and finish it up with Super Sonic and a more powered up Dark Gaia. There might be some more in there.
-No Super Sonic in levels. But really, if it were, it would be purely cosmetic because of how fast he goes normally.
-Sun and Moon Emblems unlock Dark Gaia Gates, special levels where you can play as both Sonic and the Werehog. Nifty.
[spoilers]
And now for the bad news on the Wii and PS2 version. It seems the rumor that two levels were getting cut from it is true... and it's not just acts; WHOLE continents were removed. Specifically, it lacks all of Empire City (New York) and Mazuri (Africa). Those, as confirmed by the guide, are exclusive to the 360 and PS3 versions. Sorry guys.
And first three reviews.
Nintendo Power 8/10 (http://gonintendo.com/?p=63196) Wii
Telegraph.co.uk: 5/10 (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/technology/technologyreviews/videogamereviewsandpreviews/3477009/Sonic-Unleashed-video-game-review.html) 360/PS3
Game Informer 6 & 6.75/10 (http://www.gameinformer.com/NR/exeres/B2697618-AAD1-425F-91B5-3B3B5C9819F4.htm) Doesn't say which version. Second Opinion mentions both of them, though.
-
Interesting, no Empire City or Mazuri ... guess that's why those were the only two levels we hadn't seen in Wii trailers yet.... <_<
Either way, I'm vaguely disappointed by how these reviews seem to place a ton of emphasis on "werehog is bad". That Telegraph one beat the living snot out of the game.
EDIT: Wait, are we SURE? I was watching a bunch of gameplay videos, and while only Apotos gameplay is up, there were clips of three different hub maps: Apotos, Spagonia ... and MAZURI. Where did this post come from? Do you have a source?
-
oddly, I'm finding that, while I hate the whole "werehog" idea, the game's looking rather good...
I hate to be optimistic, but is it possible that this game won't suck?

Every review I've read so far cites that the werehog sections are the only down part. And go to extreme lengths to state how much they REALLY REALLY REALLY LIKE the speed sections. As in, there really seem to be NO PROBLEMS AT ALL with the running stages. I like. I like a lot.

Actually, the GI score was 6/6.5. The second score was for the Wii. Focused much of the review (and the score) around the were hog.
IGN gave this a 7.2 (Wii version).

EDIT: Wait, are we SURE? I was watching a bunch of gameplay videos, and while only Apotos gameplay is up, there were clips of three different hub maps: Apotos, Spagonia ... and MAZURI. Where did this post come from? Do you have a source?
There is a boss on Mazuri in the Wii but no stage, so I heard. I'll try to find a better source from someone who has the game. ... Buuuut you can see for yourself if it's true by seeing a gameplay walkthrough here! http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=SonicWorldAdventure&view=videos (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=SonicWorldAdventure&view=videos)

That's actually the same channel that I made the assumption off of ... I had just watched Part 8, which contained a map and cutscenes of Mazuri. I'll check this out later, because for some inexplicable reason YouTube is being painfully slow at home.
And yes, I was watching parts 1 through 8, it looks like *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
there are multiple acts per zone indeed, but most need a number of tokens to be unlocked
*END SPOILERS*
EDIT: And Chip doesn't sound NEARLY as grating as the Japanese version. He actually sounds decent here, and I'm actually amused by his frequent references to chocolate.

As I've said in chat, Sonic Team managed to make a not only decent but great character for once. Heck, as far as personality and character development (albeit due to the "amnesia" easy cop-out), Sonic and Tails have nothing on Chip in this game. AND he does comic relief, either as part of the story or in the background while other characters talk. They've finally learned that decent animation isn't just talking and the occasional short-and-fast action.
As for the game it's decent, but knowing that it could once again have been twice as good if the controls were right (how hard can it be to copy from a previous game and make small adjustments based on the level design?), it's another disappointment for me.

So how does it handle? like a lead weight?

I heard from the reviews I read that the best control scheme is the classic controller/ GC controller (especially in the were hog sections). Are you using the Wiimote or a more traditional controller?
-
I use my GC controller.
For hedgehog stages, Sonic doesn't go exactly where you point. Because he runs too fast or whatever. But even completely stopped, if you want to turn around you have to do it like a tank. Even the super speed sections of Sonic 06 were more responsive.
In werehog stages, the same applies when boosting. And while either walking or boosting, controls during jumps are more akin to Super Mario Bros. 1 (not good for 3D), where you keep your direction during jumps, moving the joystick in another direction only slightly changes it as Werehog Sonic painfully turns on himself and maybe grabs the ledge of the new platform you were aiming for with his nose before falling to his doom. Doesn't help that you're going so slow. Sometimes he won't even jump at all, and you'll walk straight into a pit.
The stiffness of the Sonic 06 controls are also still there, only made 10 times worse by all the above. Just move slight the joystick and you'll move 3 feet forward. What happened to being able to just move half a step if you felt like it?

I keep forgetting that people are getting this for Wii... even the PS2 version would seem superior...
It looks like I'm getting this sooner than I expected...
Also, what type of GC controller do you use? 1st party standard... wavebird... pelican... 'catz?
