Title: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?
Post by: SadisticMystic on May 19, 2007, 11:58:07 pm
I thought it would be a nice idea to try one of these and see how well the dynamics go.

My plan is for a 32-member tournament, taking place over the 31 days in July.  In order to prevent recruit floods tipping the scales, I suggest restrictions on who gets to cast votes, such as requiring one of the following as of the start of the contest:
* 25 or more forum posts (without an active ban)
* 3000 or more lines in #soniccenter since the last stat reset
* 1 or more untied records on a chart
And if any suspicious accounts show up in the days between the contest is officially announced and July 1, whose only actions are to make 25 content-free posts, they can be conveniently banned and no one has to know why.

Of course, to have a contest between 32 members, you have to know which 32 they are.  We can attempt to figure that out here, and when they're decided, it would help if biographies were to be made for the competitors.

I'm going to see if I can develop a scheme whereby TSC usernames can be linked to IRC nicks, and if so, then my bot may be able to keep track of all the votes automatically and in a tamper-proof way.  Otherwise, we'll figure something out.

I call this be called TSC President :)

Either that or Big Brother TSC edition (best Geordie accent on): "Day ayiht in the Big Brootha house.  RPG has been monologuing in the diary room for two days now, and Mike89 is accusing SM of stealing his cheese".  Err, maybe not.

Also also separate forum for this ftw, keep teh place tidy and all that.

Seems like a cool idea. Don't know why, but it reminds me of those character battles from gamefaqs for some stupid reason I can't think of. I think voting in a forum poll might be easier to regulate since your account is already hooked up to TSC. First things first, we need someone to make biographies. Since mike and RPG seem to do so well writing the top tens, I suggest that they do the writing

As if Id monologue in the diary room :O
No, you'd monologue everywhere else. >_>

Also, my views:

1. I hate popularity contests.

2. Anyone listed under (If I had a) Banhammer (with, perhaps, the exception of inactives like Cybrax and CF) should be at least considered.

3. Pretty much anyone else who's regular in the chatroom could be fair game.

Of course I'm just throwing out ideas.

Also, would this be elimination-style (as in each day the user with the fewest votes is eliminated each day) or some weird head-to-head thing?

Moving this out into the open for everyone to see, so they can give input.

The format of the contest would be a lot like an NCAA bracket: each day two players are put up against each other, everyone who casts a vote for you out of the day's 2 competitors causes you to get 1 point, and at the end of the day, the player with the most points advances in the tournament (loser is out).  With 32 players, this means 5 "rounds" before an overall winner is decided.

The aforementioned system for linking accounts between #soniccenter and the site is now in place (see the new field in the user settings page).

Looking through the 17 members on the prominent page:
Rolken - sure
SadisticMystic - sure
Cybrax - do we consider him too inactive, or see if he can get votes on remembrance of the past as an experiment?
F-Man - sure
mike89 - sure
SuperSonic101 - sure
RPGnutter - sure
yoshifan - sure
NintenDan - seems to have lost most of the prevalence he once had; may be worth including just for how long he held dominance on Advance
CosmicFalcon - hasn't been active even in chat as much as he used to be; reaches out to a different (more casual?) demographic which may be interesting to see play out against most of the others
SprintGod - notably silent and likes it that way; what kind of vote-getting power would he have?
oldskoolgamer101 - probably not, given the most recent known history
sonicam - sure
douglas - sure
Spinballwizard - sure
gamersince93 - sure
Psyknux - sure

In any case, it's going to take more names to get to 32.  Some come to mind--eredani, Shadow Jacky, GerbilSoft, and is it worth including some less-respected but well-known names such as sonicandamy or Hero Chaos Chao?  Let's see how this turns out.

I should get started on max RA'ing FR5 on SA2B.

Not like I'm popular or anything. And I change mynicks and forget to link them too much on #soniccenter.

I'm too early anyway. Meh.

I'll still watch, though.

EDIT: Sonicandamy should be in so he can get out first round :)

I think I'd make an interesting addition. I have this theory that I in fact have a cult-like following wherein a small group of people secretly hang on every word I say, or at least recognize the eloquence with which I express thoughts and the irony inset in every post.

Then again, it is more likely that I lack a cult-like following wherein a small group of people secretly hang on every word I say, or at least recognize the eloquence with which I express thoughts and the irony inset in every post.

In reality, I probably won't garnish many votes, as I regularly insult the demographic with which I would potentially be most popular and contradict myself in the name of popular sport.

I would not be opposed to mass writing biographies as I in fact enjoy writing, especially in the paradoxical style (what I'm intentionally avoiding right now) though SM has priority there.

This will be epic.

This won't even take long, just a month. Sounds like a good idea to me.

However, I see Rolken winning. As anyone who doesn't vote for him gets the b& :(.

Are there even enough active members to warrant this?

The way I see it it'd basically be the 32 competitors making the votes.

also I nominate Stefan!

Second, Stefan I agree, I can also see Rolken winning easily.
Third, see me on the list?

I would also recommend SJ, eggFL, Thorn and I also think genus should be added. Also, I'm glad Groudon was mentioned as well. And I shared the same sentiments re: S&a. :P

I've drafted a preliminary bracket.

USA DIVISION
1. Rolken
2. yoshifan
3. SadisticMystic
4. gamersince93
5. Shadow Jacky
6. sonicam
7. Stefan
8. stanski
9. Psyknux
10. Quartz
11. GerbilSoft
12. Groudon199
13. Upthorn
14. NintenDan
15. Paragod
16. blueblaze

NON-USA DIVISION
1. mike89
2. RPGnutter
3. eredani
4. F-Man
5. SprintGod
6. SuperSonic101
7. douglas
8. Marth
9. maggot
10. CherryMay
11. CosmicFalcon
12. Zeupar
13. Sonic3Knuckles
14. P.P.A.
15. knuckles_sonic8
16. oldskoolgamer101

This list is open for tweaks in the seeding, or swapping out some names for higher-powered names that were left off.  And coming up with sillier names to describe the divisions couldn't hurt.

The only problem I see is that some people on the list (sorry PPA, but I'm going to use you as an example - no offense meant) are good people and pretty good competitors but just aren't notable in the community.

I'd try and find a spot for Crowbar. And where's SkyLights from again?

No room for PsyBorg either?

Just throwing out a couple of names - I bet there's a few more. Perhaps the retired brigade - cybrax, Rayku, Zealous etc?

EDIT: actually I'll have a go at tweaking the brackets myself.

USA DIVISION
1. Rolken
2. yoshifan
3. SadisticMystic
4. gamersince93
5. Shadow Jacky
6. sonicam
7. Psyknux
8. stanski
9. Stefan
10. Quartz
11. magnum12
12. SkyLights
13. Spinballwizard
14. PsyBorg
15. NintenDan
16. blueblaze

NON-USA DIVISION
1. mike89
2. RPGnutter
3. eredani
4. F-Man
5. SprintGod
6. CherryMay
7. douglas
8. Marth
9. maggot
10. SuperSonic101
11. knuckles_sonic8
12. CosmicFalcon
13. Crowbar
14. Zeupar
15. shadowgamer196
16. Shadow Wedge

The script is configured to have voting begin July 1 and continue through every day in July.  Everything will be fully automatic, except that the competitors and seeds must be determined and manually entered before then.  There's still work to be done on getting a consensus.

Title: Re: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?

Yeah, I'm sure site-based voting could work. That would help target a wider range of voters, IMO than isolating it to just chat.
Title: Re: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?
Post by: CodeGirl on June 08, 2007, 07:03:52 pm
The problem with mixing voting methods is that I can't really keep them synchronized.  The services running on TSC lack an effective method of pushing updates out to me, and having me forward my results to TSC would be more feasible but I'm concerned about mismatched timeservers leading to discrepancies in system time, particularly the time each match begins and ends.  There's still 3 weeks to think of a solution to the integration problem, and in my experience that's plenty of time.
Title: Re: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?

Then stick with the site-based voting, IMO.

There isn't a great deal of time until this is due to start, so I'd suggest trying to achieve consensus on the list. This is the latest edition of it and there hasn't been a lot of discussion since.

I'd say the upper half of both brackets is pretty much settled, however the lower half requires a bit of thought.

As for division names I am thinking something related to the current fad (Pokemon or Starcraft depending who you ask). Diamond/Pearl? Magma/Aqua? <somebody better versed in Starcraft than I suggest a couple for that>?
Title: Re: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?
Post by: Crowbar on June 15, 2007, 11:54:12 am
I don't think there's anything that could really be used from Starcraft. There are three main races (Terran, Protoss, Zerg), and none of them really have any dichotomies within them (except maybe Confederacy and United Earth Directorate for the Terrans).

Well I suppose you could just have Protoss and Zerg or something if you want to ignore one race.

Separating by fads is a neat idea, though I doubt it will divvy up evenly. I suggest something like Competitors/Idlers/Inactive/Outcasts, though the last two categories wouldn't be filled. Maybe just Competitors/Idlers...though there seem to be comparatively few idlers on the list. Perhaps user levels would suffice, or maybe region would be best for simplicity.

The list of participants also looks solid. As such, I shall glance at this topic from time to time out of curiosity starting July 5.
Title: Re: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?
Post by: yse on June 17, 2007, 06:24:10 am
Well I just had an idea that maybe we could sort things out with regards to the origination of each fad. However Pokemon is Japanese, Starcraft may as well be Korean, and Toulouse is in France. So, bugger.

I would be inclined to make it the Pokemon and Toulouse divisions. But hey SM is calling the shots.
Title: Re: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?
Post by: magnum12 on June 17, 2007, 06:57:01 pm
You can't really call Pokemon and Starcraft fads since they're still popular even to this day. A fad would be something like "All your base", Leeroy Jenkins, or Chuck Norris jokes.
Title: Re: TSC Popularity Contest 2007?
Post by: SadisticMystic on June 26, 2007, 12:40:23 pm
There's not much time left to finalize the divisions.  My votes go for "Evil Fascists" (US) and "Evil Terrorists" (non-US).

I'd put Paragod in over blueblaze for the 16 seed in Evil Fascists.  Shadow Wedge seems like the only potential name worth replacing in Evil Terrorists, and the seeds of positions 14-16 can be shuffled up if it even matters.  Does anyone come to mind so that I can start filling in the database?
