So mike and I started working on stuff with sekret magic stuffs again (well RPG too but he was mostly for comic relief). This didn't last long. I don't know where it came up, but I mentioned to RPG that maybe we'll be trying that "sealed thing" again. Only I want to do it differently. Not with a clusterfuck of sets. Not with points going towards "buying" "boosters." Really it'll probably just be based on this (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/af181).
Essentially each player gets a box (or some other amount, I'll determine that closer to start but I'm thinking half a box), builds a 60 card (or more, I don't really care) deck, and plays for the hell of it, with unlimited trading allowed. (Oh, and unlimited access to basic land. Because, y'know, those things are freely available.)
The way I was thinking of going was start with one set/block (ideally, Shards of Alara when it comes out next month) and then adding to it as we progress, the method of which I'm still working out.
Interested parties (I believe) are myself, mike, RPG, and Sephgara (aka RPG's friend person).
I'll post more tomorrow when I'm not trying to think of stuff while knowing I have to go to bed for work in the morning. We're talking like I might program something to do this so we don't have to use the sealed deck generator on MWS here. (This would also make it more open-platform, as you wouldn't be stuck to the .mwdeck format, so you could use GCCG or apprentice or something.)

Banned Card List
(These cards are banned regardless of what set is used, and they won't be included in pools, i.e. they'll be skipped in the listing. If a card is banned that is already in a pool, then you can't use that card; contact me and I'll randomize you a replacement.)
Amulet of Quoz (Ice Age)
Bronze Tablet (Revised/4th Edition, Antiquities)
Contract from Below (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised/4th Edition)
Darkpact (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised/4th Edition)
Demonic Attorney (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised/4th Edition)
Jeweled Bird (Chronicles, Arabian Nights)
Rebirth (Revised/4th Edition, Legends)
Tempest Efreet (Revised/4th Edition, Legends)
Timmerian Fiends (Homelands)
Chaos Orb (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited)
Falling Star (Legends)
All cards from the Unglued set
All cards from the Unhinged set

Maybe if I actually bothered to re-get MWS and such I would join >_>
-
But we can totally still use MWS if we want right? >_>
GCCG didnt do it for me <_<
Also yeah Im in
-
heh... I can't do that... I can only do constructed...
I'll run an iggypop against any taker... *grins evilly*
-
But we can totally still use MWS if we want right? >_>
The point of making it open-platform was so we could use whatever the fuck we want.
MWS is included with that.
(Will update and/or post again with more stuff)
-
I highly approve
I am hyped for Shards of Alara now :(
-
Well we don't have to start with SoA.
But it's always more fun to play with new cards! >_>
Anyways more details away:
I think we're going to start with 18 packs' worth of whatever set we end up with. After we build our decks and maybe trade a bit, the games will begin. A player will receive 2 "points" for each game they win, 0 if they lose, and both players will earn 1 "point" in a draw. The points don't matter in the sense that you do not buy boosters for the points you gain. They're just there to determine what happens at the format change.
Format changes occur after some specified time (probably after a month or so so we've had time to play with our stuff and fine-tune things). This is when the points matter; the player with the least number of points gets to choose which set will have 18 packs added to the pool! The player with the most points? That player may (as in optionally) choose one set already in play before the format change and remove it from the format. (They can't remove the set that was just added, and you can't add a set that was just removed). Points reset to 0 after a format change.
The way I set up the format change is so that the losing players get to play either with sets that they a) are familiar with or b) will improve their decks most. I'll also remind you again that removing sets is optional. Remember, if you remove a set and there's only one set in play (before the format change), they you reset the format and it's like everyone started over!
If players ever deem that there are too many sets in play from players not removing them or are just bored with what they have, we could vote for a reset. This would have to be by some margin which is currently TBD.
Also bans.
They won't be many, but some cards just have to be banned because they're fucked up or whatnot. I'll copy this into the first post and add to it if a particular card becomes a problem.
Initial Banned List

Amulet of Quoz (Ice Age)
Bronze Tablet (Revised/4th Edition, Antiquities)

Demonic Attorney (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised/4th Edition)

Rebirth (Revised/4th Edition, Legends)
Tempest Efreet (Revised/4th Edition, Legends)
Timmerian Fiends (Homelands)
Chaos Orb (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited)
Falling Star (Legends)
All cards from the Unglued set
All cards from the Unhinged set
These cards are banned either because they:
-Refer to ante, which we aren't using
-Involve physical contact with cards/entities on a table
-Are from joke sets.
Cards will be banned or restricted (limited to 1/deck) if players believe a card is too powerful.
Once I determine how we're keeping track of everything (if I weren't somewhat lazy, I'd program a way to do it) we can start whenever.
-
I know you just went to slp so you wont see this till tomorrow but I figured imma post anyway
Personally I think thats a great system to use, the lowest point person deciding on the next set isnt something I would've thought of but its a very good idea IMO
Awesome on not banning power 9, like when we did the sealed tourny thing a while back I thought it was unfair to ban them (and other such epic cards) because of the low liklihood that a player could get them.
If you like, I could make a program to record all the players in the league, and update it with their P/W/L/D and points, although such a system would involve people having to PM me continually which could be a hassle, and also it wouldnt be immediatly viewable either; I guess you could have people post in the topic when they play matches and then update a scoreboard in the first post (or I could do it for you seeing as I have modify powarz to save you some bother)
Also if we start pre-AoA, do you have any idea for what set we'd start off with?

RPG I could do that in a matter of minutes. What I was referring to was an online thing (in Python as that's what I know but PHP wouldn't be out of the question) that randomizes the boosters for you and stores them internally, add the ability to submit matches and execute trades through a web interface type thing. Y'know, so it does the dirty work for all of us.
Also for Linux users interested MWS is supported for Linux now; you can execute it through WINE 1.1.2 or later. See also this handy link (http://www.magic-league.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=99606).

aha I see
You done gone be better code than me :(
-
The Nine need to be restricted/banned.
Also, why aren't we using Ante? Am I the only one who plays for cards?
-
aita what :(
What's wrong with le 9 of Power?
-
draw 3 cards for U?
insta-drop-lands?
Lotus?
You wanna play me under no-resctrict rules, you'll lose, and as such, I find them unfair
-
Aita, first of all we'd have to have A/B/U as one of the sets we're playing with. As in someone will need to pick one of the above sets. Then they'd have to get the cards. All of the power nine are rare, and among 113 rares in A/B/U (ok, 112 in Alpha because it doesn't have Volcanic Island). That takes out the ante cards and chaos orb which have been banned already. You get 18. With the expected turnout, statistics say that only a few rares will even have multiples floating in the pool, and it's unlikely that a single player will end up with multiples.
If it gets bad there'll be bannings, but I don't foresee it as a problem ATM.

I misread one of your above posts, statement retracted...

Power 9 are fun to play with anyway >_>

Ok here is an idea. The MWS patch for Shards of Alara is up on slightlymagic.net now. Here's an idea I've thought of:
I will write a program to randomize a set of pools, one for each person in the league. Then, in FCFS order (first-come first-served, for the noobs who don't understand abbrevs.) pools will be assigned, with myself getting the last. You won't know what's in these pools. (I will, but that's why I'm going last.)
Yes, mythic rares will be involved in their supposed 1:8 ratio. I'll have a little random action doing that part.
Thoughts? I'll whip something up Wednesday or Thursday maybe, but won't start until next week considering I'm going away this weekend.

Do want :(
-
You guys better get something going quick because I am rapidly losing interest in this >_>
-
So anyone who's interested either spam me on #tscmagicks or PM me here or something and hope I notice. I'll talk to mike and T tomorrow.

Bump? :(
-
Really more people besides RPG and myself need to show interest in this. :(
But right now I'm delaying until I can get the shards of alara patch to actually WORK.
-
I'll show interest in November when my exams are over. But as it is I'm procrastinating far too much already, what with mafia and poker and whatever else.
