Adorable Picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/segaamerica/5727213437/in/set-72157626400442837 (note that it appears in a 23-pic set of Generations screens)
3D confirmed for PS3, 360, and (surprisingly enough!) 3DS. 3DS uses Genesis Green Hill 1 as the classic Green Hill act. City Escape video also confirms Rooftop Run 360/PS3.
Update, April 18
Sonic Generations officially announced.

Update, April 19
In-game footage. Clearly edited, but with clean audio and the majority of the first level for both Classic and Modern styles. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wuj-6T_ymqg)
Initial Post by FKE
You all saw it coming. As Sega promised, at exactly 9am (EST) they released a 50 second teaser trailer that shows off what's to come later on this year. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc_Tb6iwPjY) (I would post more about the video but who would want to spoil that?)
Although it has no name it's mostly obvious that the title will be 'Sonic Generations'. Not much is known other than the game will be released (With some form of Online content) for the Xbox 360 & Playstation 3 this year. (I assume it's Q4) People with the Nintendo Wii/3DS will be disappointed to find out that they will be missing out on this title. You may also noticed the level mostly confirms the rumor from October.
So other than this [not so useful] info, what are your thoughts on the teaser trailer? It's also my obligation to say "BWAAAAAAAAA, GREEN EYES."
Thorn EDIT: For the sake of moving this post to the site's front page, lemme clarify a few things FKE / Mysterious Figure / whatever-he's-called-today said without citation. The initial trailer reveal was done on the official Sonic Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/sonic) on April 7 at 9 AM EDT. The "Sonic Generations" expected title comes from a recent URL registration from SEGA that does not have any content at the moment. Official confirmation of consoles is at the end of the video and shows 360 and PS3; Nintendo players shouldn't count themselves out this year, as there were also rumors of 3DS titles and another Mario & Sonic game (and if turning Radical Highway into a snowboarding level didn't do it for you in the last one, you are unpleasable). Various release dates have been thrown around, from the actual 20th anniversary of Sonic on June 23, 2011 to the usual October to December holiday release, but the timing of the trailer showing suggests a later release.
WOO!

I can't wait for it!
-
The classics.
-
Classic Sonic looks awesome in 3D. I wonder what the game will be about.
-
HYPE MACHINE ACTIVATE D:
-
I think this may be the greatest discovery since(insert the best discovery here)!!!!!!! Hopefully this time SA1 and SA2 may have an equal. If this happens... the epicness of Sonic will be apparent again(to other gamers, that is[I hope]) ^_^
-
It wouldn't surprise me if people began hating on this game like many have been before.
-
This doesn't look very interesting yet... I just see Green Hill Zone for the 80th time, a terrible Sonic the Hedgehog game mechanic (sliding) still existing, and a general sense of "hey Mario, us too" in terms of.. the overall feeling of it I guess. I look back and remember how awesome it was to be playing Sonic Adventure 2 and how much it proved that Sonic still had a lot of life and places to go, and the only thing they can come up with here to celebrate the 20th anniversary is a past life? Maybe I'm just being too optimistic :(
-
a terrible Sonic the Hedgehog game mechanic (sliding) still existing
I second this notion. The instant I heard that sound, I felt let down by the game already. But who knows, maybe black eyes blue hedgehog will get to do real stuff.
-
I love that we finally have an official 3D black-eyes model. Regardless of how good the game is at least there's a start to getting the classic sonic model back.
-
Sonic Generations officially announced.
Souce: http://www.sega.com/games/sonic-generations/
Also, Gamplay Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV1Osnkr5Nc) Spoiler: It's epic.
-
I could whine about not being able to play my sonic, but honestly, it looks great. If it doesn't have S06 problems, it looks like it could be Unleashed, with werehog replaced with classic sonic platforming... and honestly, isn't that what's best for everyone?
Not assuming it'll be great, but they got colors right... maybe 2 in a row?
-
Rolling physics seem... forced... :( Especially at 0:40 in the interview... Remember Sonic 06? Everything about that game was forced. Granted, this is only one thing that's forced, but nobody seemed to see how much of it was forced before the game came out. And then beyond that it just seems like it goes like "Hey, look at MODERN Sonic. He's got all this STUFF chasing him. And he BOOSTS." And... that's about it.
I really hate the whole concept of this game because it feels like a huge question-mark towards me that asks "What would you rather pay for?" Because I know what Sega is going to do afterwards: put the favored version in a blender, add a bunch of stupid crap, and sell it for all it's worth, forsaking the other for the favored while at the same time not being truly fair to either of them. It's like a cage match where the winner is soaked in the blood of the dead carcass of the loser.
I'm gonna eat a donut. That's something that won't be depressing. :(
-
I want to think more optimistically(I know about the pessimist being an optimist's realist thing), going by the logic of the newer games, while being much shorter than the previous ones, have been getting better since Sonic '06, so we may have another great game on our hands. Let's hope that it isn't too short, though. Although, I'm starting to believe that I'm the only person looking for the brighter possibilities. :( Oh well, stuff happens.
-
Hm, I remember I had this vision a while ago of how they should do a 2.5D Sonic game that would sometimes have some 3D segments. Then they announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and I was amazed my vision came true, but then sort of threw a fit at how it was just downloadable and didn't make use of new-gen graphics and moving camera angles. I think I had an argument with Rolken over this, I think it was, who said it wouldn't make sense and would never happen. ;P Now this game is exactly like what I imagined, except I didn't see the classic Sonic look coming of course, not to mention the 3D gameplay looks lame as to be expected. Anyway, I'm not saying it'll be good or great, however I am more interested about it than I've been for any Sonic games in a while.
EDIT: oh, I think I got the first signs of my vision coming true with Sonic Unleashed actually. It was pretty weird cause it got announced only a few months after. But it turned out quite different than my vision compared to this. OK I'll shut up now.
-
Chemical Plant
Hydrocity
Sky Sanctuary
Quartz Quadrant
Amazing Arena (just for the music)
Rusty Ruin
Crystal Egg
Secret Base
Ice Paradise
Chaos Angel (Cyber Track would look fucking sick though)
Huge Crisis
Pirate's Island
hell if I know if they're even touching the adventure titles and such...
I'm getting this out of my system after looking at the interview and seeing how expansive Green Hill was made. I hate you Sonic Team >_>
-
Ya know, as pessimistic as I can be, I saw me a spindash as classic sonic...
I mean, honestly, most of us are going to pick it up one way or another (how many of us own 06...), and I don't think this could be the worst sonic outing, as there's already a lot of competition for that award.
It does look breakable in some places, and I hope it is. Obviously it can't be 2D-game broken, but that doesn't mean I can't hope for similar nonsense. Looking forward to release and will be keeping an eye on it. SEGA made colors awesome, let's go for two!
-
Oh, well, look at that. The gameplay trailer doesn't mention Wii at all. Good thing I noticed that before getting my hopes too high XD
Also, you just *know* there's going to be firestorms about peoples' favorite levels missing.
-
I was about this game. Classic Sonic levels play like the classic game and modern Sonic levels play like Sonic Unleashed/Colors. That classic Green Hill Zone remix is awesome!
-
I... like the look of this. :o And bear in mind I long ago gave up on giving in to Sonic game hype back with Heroes. Also haven't bought anything since S06...
I like the concept of the two play styles. Varied gameplay has been good in Sonic games, but often removes the speed that everyone craves - these two styles are both quintessential Sonic gameplay.
I never played Unleashed or Colors, so don't know how the switching gameplay works. Kinda think they should have just had Adventure-style for modern Sonic, given that you have sidescrolling for classic Sonic.
HOWEVER, this is a short gameplay exposé; for all we know, both Sonics actually have the same gameplay, there are just more or fewer classic gameplay elements.
I did like the giant chomper: taking the classic enemy, and implementing it in the Sonic-is-getting-chased-by-something-in-the-first-level style of the 3D games.
Long story short: I'm keeping quietly optimistic.
Side note: Extended gameplay shows one of the big problems of modern Sonic: "Hup. Whoa. Yeah! Wahey~ yeah!--" OMG SHUT UP.
-
I might make a rant about What I think of this so for. I will post the link of my video when it's uploaded. I just need to record myself talking about it.
Don't worry about my rant. I don't think it's really good video to watch.

Oh, yep.
-
Would it be funny if this game does have levels from Sonic 06, Unleashed and Colors.
-
They've confirmed that the levels will be from Sonic 1 - Sonic Colors. Now what WOULD be funny is if they had levels from Sonic Labyrinth & Spinball. :P
-

OH GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!
or any Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure levels. :)
-
There had better be some serious DLC in this game ... that, or people hacking it!
-
There had better be some serious DLC in this game ... that, or people hacking it!
Talking about DLC before the damn game is even released?
I hate you, asshole.
-
More like common sense ... I highly doubt there's enough space on disk for every one of the Genesis levels, for example, yet how do you choose which ones to keep?
-
looks like Sonic Generations is going to be for the Nintendo 3DS. :)
-
Yeah, I hope we get it for the NGP too! take all my money SEGA!
-
Awesome stuff: watch the city escape vid with the CE theme instead of it's own music... it matches up eerily well. (thanks to kotaku readers for that, heh).
I'm not sure how I'll feel if they don't at least have an option to listen to the original music, actually.
A lot of people might whine about new content, but for me, if they bring back the classics, the nostalgia, and manage to not fuck up the controls/feeling along the way, I may have to give this one to them.
Regardless, City Escape looks absolutely amazing. The screens they posted are just jaw-dropping, heh.
-
...Dangit, Sega. Thank you for finally giving me a reason to WANT a 360 <.<
-
Okay so I went to that Sonic Boom event. Fun stuff. Let me put down some of my thoughts:
--------
Right off the bat I've noticed Classic Sonic's spindash is hold-charge based, instead of mash-charge based. >_>
Furthermore, you can use Square (No idea what the 360 version's button is, since I didn't touch the 360 demos, probably same as the boost button) to go straight into a spindash even if you aren't at a complete stop. Obligatory BLASPHEMY!
I swear spindash jumping is harder. Like "I can't actually pull it off instantly" harder.
Someone fell through the floor during the event! This is truly a Sonic game, with the seal of Sonic Quality Approval
/me shot
(This doesn't show it, but it happened just after this loop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPExuleMVx8&feature=player_detailpage#t=40s), during the spiral)
Uncurling's in there, yes. But it seems to vary depending on how long you charge your spindash. Charge it for a bit and it'll uncurl after a bit. Charge for 1-2 seconds and it'll take longer to do so. Directly related to speed I guess. Or was it like that since Sonic 4 as well? Anyhow.
I sucked. I only got sub-minute <_< I was fifth in their time-attack competition thing. All the times that beat me only came during the last 30 minutes though so when I got back to it I couldn't retaliate fast enough. I blame the lines. And being overconfident enough not continue while thinking there aren't other people who'd match the pace >_>
--------
Modern Sonic! They didn't run a Time Attack thing for this so I have less to cover here.
First off, it seems like you can't boost while on a rail at times. Or some rails. Or it's fickle I dunno. Doesn't matter if you boost before them though.
Turning's as good as ever >_>
<_<
No idea if drifting's back.
It's your standard Modern Sonic, really.
--------
Sadly the demo only had Green Hill, and marked Classic Sonic as Act 1 and Modern Sonic as Act 2. Not certain if that's how they're gonna do it in the actual release, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Dhaos, your Green Hill Classic Sonic target is under 50 seconds <_<
Or at least close. I can see plenty of improvement, especially since I didn't optimize spindashes until it was too late.
-
This game looks so awesome right now. I want a Ps3 just to get this game and maybe get the ps3 version of Sonic Unleashed too. How about the new Mario and Sonic game? I think it looks better then the first one. I hate the fact that there's no DS version. oh well, I'm still happy about this year for Sonic and even Mario.
-
^ I think the SU PS3 version is different enough to warrant it a purchase.
On topic: I just watched that demo. Hot damn, City escape looks absolutely beautiful both in 2D and 3D. Looks really fun and fresh enough while keeping the nostalgia factor. The changes made to the truck made me giggle though.
Also, just a reminder that SG is showing at E3 yet again today at 4:00 PM PT. Can't wait.
-
Dhaos, your Green Hill Classic Sonic target is under 25 seconds <_<
Fixed that for you.
-
^ No, you're thinking the 3DS version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eF6e32JIQA) of the stage, which actually is Green Hill 1 Genesis with 0:25 being the sweet time to get (or 0:24 if you're insane) :P
Also, since I'm posting here and Quartz didn't post any vids of Boom or Generations:
* City Escape Act 1 music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC8Uxj15nfw), as performed at Sonic Boom. Accidentally or otherwise, notice what song the melody mimics after the first chorus (don't read vid comments, it'll spoil it).~ That, and the outro (which is in-game) is the melodic line from Escape From the City in Sonic Adventure 2: The Trial. All in all, fucking awesome.
* City Escape Act 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdUGCIxwkRc) from GameSpot.
* City Escape Act 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc2RMHir8nU) from GameSpot
-
lol I hear a bit of Sonic 1 in the song. Thats so awesome. Since the video looked like shit, was Takashi Iizuka and Jun Senoue there at Sonic Boom?
-
3DS footage from E3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eF6e32JIQA)
Big thing I wanted to point out is LAUNCH BASE BOSS ... ON THE DEATH EGG PLATFORM ... WITH MUSIC ...
-
One thing I noticed. (Want to post this here to prevent spoilarz) Is that Super Sneakers make a return. Near the end of City Escape - CLASSIC the box he missed is a Super Sneakers box. I wonder if other power-ups will make a return... Probably old though.
-
Oh yeah the speed shoes.
There's some in Green Hill Classic, but I didn't think it was worth mentioning <_<
Kinda forgot that they stopped appearing in later Sonic games, felt so much like a staple of appearance.
Also I would have had videos if I had a video camera.

That Steam thing is pretty old, but it would take one HELL of a computer to run it.

360/PS3 demo (http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fgame.watch.impress.co.jp%2Fdocs%2Fnews%2F20110622_455127.html) of Sonic Generations confirmed. Release date is tomorrow.

But yeah, fucking stoked. Celebrating the 20th with the mother flippin first stage from the game that started it all! this is really sweet =)
EDIT: Okay, so I have played it and while it did seem kind of different in some aspects compared to THE CLASSICS. I am starting to like it more with each playthrough. I just feel that we have seen GHZ stuff alot in the past so I would appreciate something more fresh but this definitely made the anniversary for me.
-
Just played the demo. The spin dash controls like Sonic Adventure (hold down spin dash button to charge instead of down+ button mash) and can be done while running so it can be engaged on the fly. This is a welcome change to the 2d Sonic formula. GHZ felt like both a remake and a remix at the same time. The visuals look great. I'm stoked for this game.
-
It's fun. Uploop jump isn't in but I don't miss it. Downloop jump is significantly harder.
The physics were well done even if they aren't exactly classic, even S1-3 had changes in the physics between them.
It's up to the level design now.
-
For any PS3 users, custom music is supported =)
-
I can't download the demo[child account BS], but it isn't worth one level. I'll wait until Christmas ^_^ Also, I wish that Classic and Modern Sonic had multiple Acts on their stages. But we can't get everything, it already is good enough. I just can't wait for the release.
Wish list: Chao Garden[most likely not, but would be interesting?]
SADX Emerald Coast?
SA2 Final Rush?
SA2 Metal Harbor[please be in here, fav level]?
SG Green Hill Zone[lol jk]?
Stuff that only partially pertains to the topic:
The fat man in the red suit better bring these to me, or I'll bust down his door yelling "The PINGAS is a lie!"
Sorry about that. Christmas/Eggman joke. Someone had to XD
-
I can't download the demo[child account BS], but it isn't worth one level. I'll wait until Christmas ^_^
Just make an adult account.
-
The level list has been leaked. Not going to post it here but it's not very impressive...
Hopefully we get more demos later that actually include Modern gameplay.
-
I looked for the list out of my own curiosity. 'Tis here (http://www.vg247.com/2011/06/24/rumor-sonic-generations-levels-dlc-and-bosses-found-in-demo-files/) (spoiler warning), still only a rumor but it's something. While I'm slightly disappointed at a couple omissions, the list is ... actually, exactly what I expected. I'm still standing by the theory that other levels could very easily be added by DLC. Also, the 3DS version will in theory have a different set of levels; I'm expecting them to go into the Advance and Rush games for that. Oh, and the boss list couldn't be any more perfect...

http://www.game.co.uk/Games/Xbox-360/Platform/Sonic-Generations/~r354824/?cm_mmc=Twitter-_-Digital-_-SonicInterview-_-Link
In Sonic Generations we have something that is good for everyone, and to see classic and modern together is a special, one-off event to celebrate Sonic’s anniversary. So it won’t be the standard format going forward.
Bahahaha. Retroers, your tears are delicious.
-
^Maybe, but it depends on our market force. Unfortunately, since the Halo Advent, people who like the game no longer influence market share, so we're left to how well it's built for morons, in addition to how good it is...
Doesn't mean we can't shock them and hope they keep retro sonic around.
Also, insulting any kind of sonic fan seems poor sport: Don't we already suffer enough from the things we love? Do we need it from our enemies too? It's like punching a victim of domestic abuse: the real torture is his or her passion~
-
^ Lol, I didn't really mean it as an insult. More like poking a joke at them since they thought this was the definitive return of classic sonic and how they brought him back cause modern was failing, terrible etc when it's just a celebration for everyone.
I personally think this whole thing is stupid, sonic is sonic and I like both his designs though apparently some people can't accept change and take it to extreme degrees. You're right, he may very will come back if the demand for him is high enough but it's highly unlikely imo.
I wouldn't mind if he would appear in the Sonic 4 episodes though, seems like a good idea.

Metal Sonic returns as a rival!

Thorn EDIT: For more detail, check here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/segaamerica/5933968702/in/photostream). OMFG CHIBI IS SO EVIL AND ADORABLE AT THE SAME TIME! or something.
-
I hope you fight him like you did in Sonic CD, although the absence of a Sonic CD stage kinda sucks. Same with Heroes & Shadow the Hedgehog, since they're putting in Crisis City. In fact, the only stages that really stand out are Sky Sanctuary Zone and Planet Wisp. Everything else is citycitycity.
-

I love how in the Chemical Plant (Classic) Pics, you can see a lot of pointless speed-boosters. YAY!

Classic Tails and Modern Tails are going to be in the game. I wish I can show you guys the pic.

I'm fairly sure everybody talked about this in chat today while I was at work, but nobody posted it here because everybody is too lazy to visit the site.
Wank to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnSkUCOCBlc).
-
Chemical Plant Zone looks like Eggmanland in the modern gameplay!!! I love the looks of this game so far. I need to get a PS3!
-
I know that the game is going to be good, but I wish it would be longer, like SA and SA2. Having 20 levels of awesome is WAY better than 10 levels of awesome. Just saying. Typing, whatever >_> lol

Another thing is http://www.sonicretro.org/2011/08/generations-3ds-brings-mushroom-hill-reminder-it-still-exists/ and it is okay as well.

You may have seen the contents of this video before but the Description gives quite alot away about what you can do with the points from your ranks. It seems quite interesting, and could possibly make speedrunning a bit harder with lower levels.. we'll have to wait and see
Edit: This is just some music for speed highway, I'm not sure if it's real or fan made, but it does sound good! Escpecially the second section music!
-
^ I am pretty sure that's just a MIDI from VGMusic playing.
In other news, "fuck yes" at the Door Into Summer remix from Chaotix. And the music playing during the concept art display is... well, yes, it's from Sonic 3's file select, but more specifically it's a mix of the mix used in Sonic Jam's museums. That object similar to the Marble Garden flying being used in Sky Sanctuary was pretty unexpected too.
I leave the less obscure stuff to your own opinions.

Damn you, Zorkiy. But yeah the new Dreamcast Era trailer showing Speed Highway, Seaside Hill and City Escape came out not so long ago.

Dunno about you guys ... but I don't think I was expecting that. 'tis awesome though, and fits with the game a lot more than the ACTUAL Sonic Vs. Silver match...

Shows all the bosses including the big baddie.

Footage from CNET (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgKsUzrAFpQ) (you can of course go to CNET.com and download the video or use their embedded player). Aaron Webber shows off three acts we haven't seen before, and plays two other acts and a boss.
I did not know it was possible to have paths cross in as many ways as Generations does for Modern Sonic. The Act 2 levels we've seen to date have been fairly linear, but the ones in this video are insanely complex.
EDIT: Holy fucking shit, the first modern level shown (avoiding the spoilers that you all probably know anyway) uses a riff from the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games version of the tune. That is obscure as hell but I love it. <3

HOLY FRICK
HYDROCITY REFERENCE

EDIT: And halfway through the modern Seaside Hill level I suddenly realized I was listening to the Ocean Palace music ... well played, Sonic Team, well played ...

tl;dr version in last paragraph.
So FKE told me earlier that the Sonic News Network had an edit done to its Generations article saying that a demo may release on Wednesday, October 19th, after an announcement at the French Micromania Games Tour. I checked the page and it wasn't there, but it was in the article's history. I searched Google for the event and found a video of a Generations playthrough (the audience boos quite loudly when the player gets hit from a Crabmeat in Act 1 :P), and clearly heard "19 Octobre" mentioned, but couldn't make out the rest due to the recording quality. Somebody better versed in French than me heard the video and was able to interpret more of the sentence as "Il y aura une autre demo qui va sortir le 19 octobre sur PS3 et Xbox 360...", which indeed translates to "There will be a demo released October 19th for PS3 and Xbox 360".
tl;dr We could get another demo on the 19th, unless the commentator for the event was mistaken or the translators misheard (as the audio is pretty bad). Most people are expecting it to be Green Hill 1 and 2. The only thing making this all seem fishy is that the event supposedly ended on October 7th, so the delay in the news seems rather strange. Also, look how the SEGA forum members tear an innocent new member a new asshole for stating this possibility without the source. 3DS version - 9 minutes of gameplay including Modern Mushroom Hill remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl4F2OCuU9U)

So remember that train of thought I posted
a long time ago in my post just before this? Y'know, the one with French, that myself and many other people followed while others heckled because "lol @ French, it's all lies"?
It was right. (http://blogs.sega.com/2011/10/17/second-sonic-generations-demo-incoming/)
EDIT: The article was updated, now saying that the demo will release on the 18th instead of the 19th.
-
Bangin', looks like I'll get to demo this after all!
-
The demo's been on Xbox Live for about two hours. I'm sitting on 1:51.08 for Act 2.
Also, supposed credits music has been found in the demo via hacking (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHLK_vWErCQ), as well as the Classic Metal Sonic model. There's still more to come on the hacking front, of course.
-
It's about time they made a modern Mushroom Hill remix, copying and pasting the genesis version is just lazy. I'm downloading the new demo on my brothers 360 right now. I can't wait the play it. I love the Generations ending music. It made me cry. thank you Sonic Team!!!
-
I made a speed run for the demo. It's my first one so I hope it isn't too bad.

You can also find my classic run on my profile on Youtube, although it was from June.

Heads up, Steam just started pre-purchasing for Sonic Generations. Pre-order bonus is free copies of S3K and S3D.
EDIT: Since when is a Sonic game considered "Strategy" and "Casual"??? I can kinda-sorta understand strategy in Colors, but ... what??
-
I love the new demo. My best time for Modern Green Hill is 1:51:62.

Bitches don't know 'bout TSC. If they did, they wouldn't dare think Sonic is Casual.
Strategy I don't know... don't they have a platformer tag?
-
Action Adventure is actually closer then Strategy Casual. That's pretty messed up right there.

Forgot I had an account here. Dat modern Sonic demo. Kirby and Paraxade man. If they just drifted correctly near the end they could make my time look free. D: Damn, back to the drawing board now. I thought I broken the demo's spell, but now I have to go back in. I'm gonna spend the majority of my day tomorrow on dat shit.

The only reason my time is anywhere near yours is because drifting only makes you faster if you drift against a wall. Drifting against the left wall before the trick ramp is much faster than drifting normally through the turns. Both you and Kirby had me outpaced by a second straight throughout both of your videos, but that's when I caught up.
-
Weird, the reason I drifted that way is because I thought if you hold one direction for too long there the drifting completely breaks and you start running into the wall.
-

Nope. It all depends on the wall itself and and the angle of your drift. At the point I'm talking about for example, you have to start your drift at the right time and hold the control stick at a precise angle. Something like diagonal up-left, but closer to the left than up. Starting it too early will cause the wall to push Sonic away and slow him down. Drifting too tightly will cause Sonic's drifting to break and stop completely very early on, but if you drift correctly you should be able to make it almost all the way to the end. It's as if the wall stops you itself if you don't drop the drift in time. It's like Sonic Team made it that way on purpose. Some walls are impossible to drift on like the walls before where you have to slide under rocks or at the part where you quick step because the game doesn't left you drift lol. I've played the demo for almost three hours straight today. xD
Another weird thing I noticed was the wonders of the D-pad. The D-pad can be used to move Sonic as well. Omochao didn't tell you that shit, that little bastard. Anyway, if you hold right with the D-pad before you hit the second speed strip with the pit of platforms and rails and short hop correctly (it seems like Sonic has two height variations on his short hop depending on how you tap the jump button) almost immediately after you hit that strip then Sonic will clear the gap completely almost every time. The farthest I got was past the speed strips before the ramp once. Never been able to do it again haha. Using the D-pad instead of the control stick for the 2D sections seem to give you more hang time than normal at certain spots which can be useful and bad. Also, I think the D-pad is better for tricks and switching rails. =)
-
This game is going to broken just like the 360/PS3 version of Sonic Unleashed. I can see it now.

Depends on the level design imo. Infinite drifting no longer works because Sonic returns to his neutral position or power hops before leaning to the other side which makes him slow down at least that's what I think. If later levels have driftable (made my own word xD) walls and gaps to jump over with speed boosters then yeah I could see some cool stuff happening with some great times. Also, I should try short hopping right before ending a drift on that wall to see if the speed carries through instead of Sonic gradually slowing down before hitting the ramp. I'm shocked I never tried that yet lol. Man if I turn on the Pimpstation 3 I'll be playing all night. I better wait till tomorrow.

Is it the camera, or me, or does sonic look really different in that video? ALmost a different model.

I would say it's the camera.

Another uneventful day of speedrunning the modern demo. Was at it for three hours today. I couldn't really pull off anything of worth, but I found some new stuff. You guys can test these out if you like.
- Before the first loop, it seems faster to drift tightly on the right wall instead of the left. Use the D-pad instead of the control stick to drift as tightly as possible. I say this because the camera has a bit more trouble following Sonic through the loop unlike if you drifted on the left where the camera seems more normal as you go through the loop. Also, once I get the game one of the first things I'm doing after I take care of my Youtube channel is seeing what walls can be drifted against in every Modern Sonic level and the correct angle for each. Although I expect other people to take it apart before me.
- This is already known, but mashing the slide button (O in my case, I'm guessing B for Sexbox people) to make Sonic slide before he touches the checkpoint after the loop makes him go fast as hell if you get him to slide at the right time. What I've noticed is that most people like to short hop, land on the platform after the checkpoint, and then slide. Landing on the platform makes Sonic slow down noticeably. I thinks it's faster to time a high-short hop as the platform is coming up (I do this once Sonic gets near the rosebush/red flower type thingies at the beginning of the down-slope of the final hump before the platform). This will carry Sonic across more than half of the platform before he lands. Before he does actually land on the platform, aerial boost then quickly jump into the red dash ring. This seems faster imo.
- Most people seem to know about landing early in the cave, but kinda fail at clearing the whole gap before the trick ramp. Hold the D-pad forward instead of the control stick before jump after that dash panel. It helps. Not touching that rail at all gives you a modest time improvement.
- Near the start of the level, you know that first rail after the dash ring? You know how aerial boosting right before you land on it makes you go faster than normal? The same works for the rails in the cave. If you short hop over the dash panels and time an aerial boost just right on one of the rails then Sonic goes faster than normal while still boosting. It's extremely difficult to do imo. If you do pull it off, make sure to avoid all of the rail dash panels in the cave that's possible. Some dude on Youtube was the first to bring this to light I think. Forgot his username. Those rail tricks are important because they seem to cut like two or three seconds off your time if done properly. Most of my three hours of playing the game today was spent in that cave. Still haven't cracked it yet. I only did it once, ONCE. D: Would be interesting to see if the rail glitch is applicable in other levels once the full game drops next Tuesday.
- Some Japanese dude on Youtube exposed some Unleashed type exploits with the slide during the Mobius strip on the latter-half of the level. Seems like sliding after that first dash panel is faster. Upon watching his vid, that and also ending his trick on the last trick ramp earlier + skipping the very last set of dash panels was the only thing he did differently from what I did to get my record of 1:41.23 Saturday morning. He beat that by nearly a second without even doing the rail glitch in the tunnel. That means that high to mid 1:39 is most defiantly possible. ._.
- Near the end of the level, it's also possible to drift along the right wall as well. Drifting angle for it is diagonal right up, closer to up than right. I'm not sure if it's faster than drifting on the left. Doesn't seem to be, but you never know.
Low 1:40 or high 1:39 is what I'm aiming for, but I expect you masters here to do better than me xD. If I don't get that by Wednesday then I'm quitting messing with this demo. I got nothing to do tomorrow after my classes and I have no classes on Tuesday so I'm going all in. Speedrunning this demo reminds me of this chick I was trying to fuck in high school a couple years ago. She was infuriating and made me so mad at her that I wanted to punch her dumb ass, but when I finally got some ass it felt good as fuck. I eventually dropped her ass cause the pussy wasn't worth it though.
Some other cool stuff I noticed:
- If you stop in place (I use a stomp to cancel momentum) then drift backwards, Sonic will drift in the opposite direction than he was facing in doing a complete instant 180. Could be useful if later level design calls for it I guess.
- Near the end of Modern Green Hill, taking the top route instead of stomping through the bridge would be faster if Sonic didn't slow down while attempting to drift out of the loop. >.>
- Sonic goes off trick ramp or through trick ring. Time spent in the air is proportional to how early you finish your trick. This is just a theory. I'm basing this off of the trick ring exiting the cave. Sonic just seems to land quicker if you trick then finish earlier. I can't really tell.

SUPER SONIC RACING.

Snagged the demo, highly restricted in everything (when you can jump, when you can SD, when you can boost) and generally not showing any care for actually maintaining speed. I didn't expect gold, SEGA, but when you shit in a bag and write "Gold" on the front in a pretty font you're not exactly going to hear cheers from me.
Colours seems to be a lone win, thus far... maybe the full version won't be made of shit, but this gives me no hope and I've since canceled my pre-order.
But hey, that means more money for my video card for PSO2... obviously SEGA took all the good out of STeam and put them to work in PSO-land~

SEGA are doing a Speedrunning competition of Green Hill. Anyone over 13 can enter, and i'm not sure what the prize is yet, but all of you guys seem capable of beating the 1:50 mark so I suppose you can all enter. It's interesting too see how good others around the world at this.
