So, a quick look at anyones profile shows a tab at the top named "Awards," but it doesn't go anywhere. It doesn't seem to be doing anything. A quick search of the forum shows that it was meant to be:

Gets rid of that stupid Storage Topic. "Zomg nobody's looking at my emeralds because nobody wants to read a topic for storage." >_>

You deserve an award icon just for that idea.

Yeah I vote that we make an award for awesome site suggestions. X)

Anyway, that is pretty wise. I should envisage that challenge icons could be put up as awards as a bit of filler before the actual awards come into effect... or maybe it is better to wait until the actual awards and then move the challenges over?

The challenge awards are better than nothing. Except for me, since I haven't done those challenges. :(
But yeah, maybe those could be done first, and then the other awards could come later.
But it's important that the other awards do come at some time. And in the reasonably near future.

Still, either way, it's a good idea.

im not too fond of the emerald challenges, but it would still be nice for the awards thing to be used for SOMETHING, hopefully EC's and more. Right now its a waste of space and creates confusion for newcomers who notice not a single one of the best of the best have any awards.

I'm coming in late here as I am on vacation but, um... can someone explain in detail how one is to add awards if this goes through? Do we do it ourselves or does a another person add them?

I'm guessing the system would work something like this, assuming we're just using Emerald Challenges for the time being.

-TSC would have a bank of award icons, with no name attatched, along with a convenient data structure pointing to aforementioned award icons.
-People go on completing challenges in the normal fashion, attatching .giz files to their posts, ect.
-When a person is successful at a challenge, the grader goes to some secret page and inputs the name and award they recieved. Since nobody completes emeralds in order (is there even an order?), the awards input would probably have to resemble some kind of boolean array. I dunno. Checkboxes? :[
-Once this information is processed by whatever, the Awards page would show the amazing awards player x has recieved by displaying an award according to the boolean array.

Though that's all just theoretical and based off of my logic.

^That sounds pretty much like how it'd be done.
Lemme touch up with a few of my thoughts:

- Your word, "grader"... that's pretty much been synonymous with Thorn for several months now :P

- There is one "order" requirement: you cannot get a high-level emerald of a color before the lower one. Therefore, the way I see it, you'd assign a 0 or 1 to each challenge for each player depending on it they finish it, and the awards displayed would be based on two things. If a zero appears in a color, it'd have to display the emerald lesser than it, even if you completed a later challenge in that color. And if the sum of the values is greater than or equal to 8, 16, or 24, the extra pics need to show.

- The Awards have to be connected to the forum somehow. Otherwise,t he Awards page just becomes another Storage Topic: you earn it, but nobody looks at it.

Obviously grader = Thorn. Something needs to be done about RPG (and SM). RPG solution = replacement anyone :o? SM solution = allow someone else to grade and award Cough Drops.

As for relating the awards to the forum, um how about instead of linking to the users forum profile you just change it to the users profile since we pretty much see what's in your forum profile on the forum by looking:

I think that's the wrong approach to look at it for the moment seeing as the Emerald Challenges are already connected to the forum (they're based on them) and the Awards page wouldn't actually be on the forum, instead the actual site connected to the profiles. It is true however that it will probably continue to be overlooked as something that is useless, not very valuable at all, and simply a waste of time. So to change that, I say add value to them. It doesn't seem like awesomeness points are good enough for some reason, so how about... site points? <_< >_>

^I'm torn over your last statement there. On one hand, it'd definitely revive the challenges, and I personally would benefit the most. X) On the other hand, Rolk probably wouldn't want value attached, nor would anti-ROM people, and I'd be swamped with files to grade.

I'd be up for giving them value for a trial period, and going from there.

Also, to be honest, I would rather see the actual Awards finally implemented rather than some re-glorifying of the ECs.

By speedruns do you mean things like TAS (which isn't covered by this site) or the kinds of runs that are submitted to SDA? In that case isn't having your run up on SDA enough of an accolade?

I don't see why not.

After all, it is an Awards section

so perhaps there can be a small section on that page as well for any honors one has recieved in the past from previous top ten topics

and I say this mainly because I would have nothing else to show in my awards section, since I never really got into the emerald challenges :(

And to throw another idea into the awards page mix, how about one for championships maintained, or number of championships at one time? I'm not sure if actually getting a championship should be given some kind of award because then the people that submit first for some new game and then ended up at like 20% in two days would get the recognition. It would be kind of a "blah" award.

For getting an award for maintaining a championship, I think it should start off at a week, because chances are you're probably battling competition if you've newly obtained a championship, and if you've kept it away from #2 for a week then that's pretty good. From there, I think awards would go on like this:

-2 Weeks holding ____ championship
-1 Month
-2 Months
-3 Months
-6 Months
-1 Year
-2 Years
-3 Years

ect. I think number of championships at once is pretty self-explainatory, so I'll leave it at that.

You guys do all know the original idea of the Awards right? They were to be for things like "Held a championship for x time." or "Held over 500 records at one time." et cetera. Like Xbox 360 achievements (as we told Rolk many times after he threw the idea into the idea pool).

I went back and looked at some old updates (yeah, there's an idea, bet none of you actually checked old forum posts to see what these Awards are about), and in one Rolk said the functionality for Awards was fully laid out. He just didn't have many images for them, nor enough gimmicks.

Well it's summer and I'm bored out of my mind, so I'd be happy to sprite some awards myself if that's a problem. Just list whichever ones are needed.

And now it seems that the idea of "Awards" has come up again - but this time, it'll actually happen. :D

Some ideas for awards:
- New Championship
- New Leadership
- 0p'ing a category (customized per-division, e.g. "Speed Demon" for times)
- Getting into the Top 5 (or 10, or 20) Sitewide
- Getting (Platinum|Red|Orange) in (5|10|15) games
- Most Records
- Most AntiRecords
- Most Rings, Sitewide (we could also implement a chart for this)

I have a basic idea of how to implement the awards system, but right now I'm working on cleaning up the rest of TSC. Hopefully I'll be able to start implementing it later this week.
