Competition Central / A few things about Windy Valley with Sonic
« on: August 31, 2007, 05:20:10 am »
Ok, I just wanted to ask, you know the shortcut where you charge up your special... spin dash thing (sorry mental blank) in act 3 of Windy Valley on the spring boards, which shoots you straight towards the capsule? Could someone with SA and SADX who can do the shortcut tell me if it's possible on SA? Coz I just can't get it to work.

Also, on one of my old crappy Windy Valley vids, someone claimed he got between 00:59 and 01:03. Alot of people make claims like this, but I have a feeling this guy might actually be telling the truth because his explanation actually makes sense. An outdated way to land on the capsule in Windy Valley is to jump straight off the "road" and onto the capsule. Apparently it can be done from the very start of act 3, with an interact controller, and I have a memory of someone saying there was some short cut in one of Tails' levels that could only be done with one of these controllers, so if any of you has one of these controllers, it might be worth trying out.

His exact words were "I'm pretty sure you can't do it with a regular dreamcast controller. You need an interact controller (it's shaped like an ugly white boomerang with black buttons). And if I remember correctly, you have to speed (spin) jump NE when you start the third section while holding the right shoulder button." and if you want to see the whole conversation it's here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AiEqZQzEss (and yes, I realise my run sucks).

Only a few vids that are any good. All SA and SA2B at the moment.

For the Genesis / Mega Drive, Sonic 1 and 2 are both poorly coded and don't compensate for the video frequency. This could give an unfair advantage, since it gives you more time to react to events onscreen. (The in-game timer doesn't compensate either, which makes one second in-game take around 1.16 seconds real-time.) Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles do have correct 50 Hz coding, so it's not a problem on those games.
Ah ok, thanks for that. If I attempt speed runs for Sonic 1 and 2 maybe I should use an ntsc rom then. Also do you know if the pal versions of Sonic 1 and 2 on the Master System "poorly coded" or are they ok?
On the 3D side, Sonic Adventure 2 apparently has a glitch in 50 Hz mode where sometimes it interprets a single button press as a double press, which can cause unwanted homing attacks. Switching to 60 Hz mode fixes that problem.

Also note that PAL is not restricted to 50 Hz - there's a PAL60 option available on the Dreamcast and GameCube that uses the PAL color encoding with the M monochrome signal (PAL-M).
Yeah, for SA and SA2B i've been playing them on 60hz. And I used to get that glitch alot when I didn't.

36
Sorry if this would be considered the wrong forum, I didn't know exactly where to post it.

I heard that pal games are around 17% slower then ntsc games. For Sonic games on newer consoles, I can play them on 60hz (ntsc) but I was thinking about attempting some speed runs for some of the old Sonic games on my Mega Drive. Since my system is pal (and there's no way for me to play it in 60hz) I was wondering if anyone knew whether this would give me any advantages or disadvantages compared to people playing in 60hz?

37
I mainly play Nintendo and SEGA consoles, the only console I own that's not by them is my PS2. I wanna get a 360 though, if only for a few games.

Lately, I haven't been playing much but Sonic though.

I'm really good with Shadow with Darkness and NiGHTS with Darkness(okay every character with Darkness).
Just wondering, what's so good about Darkness?

here's one of my runs from this place.

also I suggest getting VLC player to view everything on this site.
Awesome vid! And i'm downloading VLC now.
I agree with SJ on VLC Player. It's really the way to go.

And yeah, speaking from experience, High Booster is key for basically all records. I believe there is one I've obtained without it but I don't recall...

Anyway, let me know which stages you need help on if you're going for the records as I'll gladly share my knowledge. :)
Thanks :) I'm going to have to get this High Booster...

Ok I uploaded a video onto youtube of me playing Riders. And it is a bad time, so I need some help with it. Advice would be appreciated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNdsTFYr1MQ

Also, just wondering whether most of you use the same character and Extreme Gear all the time, or do you use different ones depending on the course you're racing?

Sorry for double posting.

Anyway, the vids should help with learning how to master each of the tracks. Otherwise, feel free to ask anyone of us regulars (or at least used-to-be regulars) who still play the game (for some, just remember what it's like as it's been a while) for advice.
Ok, thanks. All of the vids here that i've tried to view are in wma format, and don't work for me. I've searched youtube for speed runs that I could learn things from, but without much success.

No, you'd run out of air.
Ah yeah... fair enough.
Sonic R >>> Sonic Riders
Everyone keeps telling me that, I have yet to play it though. Oh well, I like Riders anyway.

I got Sonic Riders yesterday, and i'm pretty impressed. It took me a few hours just to get used to it, but now i've beat story mode and I might try some speed runs if I get alot better at the game.

I noticed you can do a boost out of a "slide." Does this mean you can snake like in Mario Kart?

Not sure if it classifies as a flash "movie," but it's a classic.
Hahaha, yeah I know that site, it's good to send to people.

General Sonic / Re: Favore the Sonic Advance games!!!

The first Sonic Advance game was my favourite. Advance 2's level design wasn't as good, in my opinion, and I haven't played Advance 3.

i dont think of anyone as a threat, i dont mind i get pushed back to 20th place or something im just pointing out its wild how many new players have been able tear up SADX so quickly (especially emerald coast, Even F-Man is SIXTH place?! im sure he'll get 1:03 and absolete the lot of them but still)

also im sorry for going so off topic on your welcoming topic but i didnt want anyone to get the idea that I see everyone as a threat instead of a competitor ;)
Sorry, I meant it in a kind of joking way.

Thanks everyone.
yet another SADX player, recently theres been tons of them that are really good from the start which is scary because it took me forever to get decent

welcome, have fun, good luck, and most importantly HAPPY EASTER ! :)

I've spent alot of time on Emerald Coast, which even then my time isn't nearly as good as some of the other people on here. On all of the other levels I need improving. I'm not really a threat to you Paragod

Hey, my name's Jesse. I can't remember how long i've been playing Sonic games, but they were the first games i've ever played. At the moment the only Sonic game i'm attempting speed runs for is SA, I might try some others in the future. So yeah, hi.
