Competition Central / My videos were deleted, need them back
« on: May 20, 2008, 06:09:26 am »
As I mentioned in IRC, I accidentally deleted all my videos a few days ago, so I may as well make a topic as well to keep track of things:

Missing stuff:
Sonic 1 GG/MS
Sonic 2 GG/MS (except ce1, sh1, sh2)
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 3D (except gg1, gd1)
Sonic Advance 2 (Egg Frog / Sonic)
Sonic CD
Sonic Drift (Green Hill / Green)
Sonic R (except rr-gp3)
Sonic Robo Blast 2
Basically everything linked from here

If anyone has them, please send them to me either via:
MSN/E-Mail: sprintgod@hotmail.com
IRC DCC

Heh... sometime I should keep the full recording of one of my sessions and edit together all the screwups.

Depending on the level, sometimes it takes well over 1000 attempts before I get it right...

Chaotic Space and other such levels cannot display subseconds in any form whatsoever. SRB2 can. Comparison over.
Totals are broken for the same reason that 1.99 + 1.99 != 2.

Basically your excuse appears to be that you have to cater for people who are too lazy/stupid to spend about 10 seconds looking at something as complicated as a 3-4 digit number, when said people probably don't have the patience to obtain times low enough such that subseconds particularly matter anyway. There's no need to dumb things down for the people who don't fall into this category, when instead those who do could just be submitting X:XX.99 as a penalty for being incompetant.

I'm guessing it went something like this:
"Hey this game has a Time Attack mode! Maybe we should use it for time attacking or something!"
"Don't be stupid. Who the hell uses time attack mode for time attacking?"

Or maybe:
"Tics break totals, therefore lets just ignore them and have everything broken instead."

Totals are a non-issue. Or rather they are an issue, but not in relation to whether or not the tics should be added. Lets add up 3 times for fun.
0:13.05, 0:30.14, 0:12.29
Actual Total: 0:56.13
Broken Total: 0:55.48
Truncated Total: 0:55.00 (Try to explain how this is less broken)
Nuking subseconds for the sake of switching one form of brokenness with another seems pretty damn stupid to me. Especially since should the site come to support non-decimal subseconds, everyone has to go through the crapfest that is resubmitting all their times.

Also, in other news, Jim Hines has now held on to the 100m world record for almost 40 years. Well done to him.

Information Kiosk / SRB2 Times
« on: May 15, 2007, 10:59:42 am »
Just thought I'd point out the following:

  • SRB2 has a built in Time Attack mode.
    • Saves only the best time per level.
    • Saved times include subseconds (35 units per second)
    • Saves one replay per character per level. Replays can be viewed manually through the console (playdemo <filename>), so they can be easily backed up and shared without any messing about.
  • Options > Game Options > High Resolution Timer = ON
This changes the in-game timer into a frame counter, allowing you to obtain subseconds for times slower than your record. Divide the displayed number by 35 to convert it into seconds.
Alternatively, create the file "autoexec.cfg" in your SRB2 folder, open it in notepad, and add any of the following lines:
    • timetic 1 (Automatically turns it on at startup)
    • bind <key> "toggle timetic" (Assigns a key to toggle it)

Basically, the time charts need updating with subseconds; either taking them as displayed by the game (1/35ths of a second), or as centiseconds (divide the frame counter by 35, or multiply the saved subseconds by 20/7), with existing times being set to X:XX.34 or X:XX.97 depending on how they're added.

Emerald Challenges / Re: Useful Information

The important part of the Sonic 3 level select is the timing. If you don't know it, you'll never get it to work unless you're a lucky bastard.

The first half (u, u, d, d) is easy. Just do it quickly after the music starts, and finish before Sonic breaks the SEGA logo.

The second half (u, u, u, u) must be timed to coincide with the animation before the screen flashes, the first frame being when Sonic starts to back away into his title screen position and the last one being just before the screen flashes.

2. The most popular game on the site has 300+ tracked records.
300 divisions that aren't the same thing ten times over... You're just artificially creating divisions for the sake of it.
I already addressed the supposed problem of repetition two posts ago:
"It's not as though anyones forcing you to submit for everything."
Besides which, I'm not 'artificially creating' anything. You are choosing to completely ignore the existence of divisions already established within the game.

The point you quoted and completely missed the context of was in response to douglas' point about toppling champions. I don't see anyone demanding the deletion of any SA2B divisions because it's taking too long for them to become champion.

There is no argument as to whether or not they should be added. It's quite simple: The game tracks them, so they need to be added. You seem to be completely confusing the issue of whether they should be added with how they should affect the rankings.

The obvious way of doing it is to only count Super Sonic's times. An extension of this could be to include various Totals of the other characters.

1. Not all divisions have to contribute to rankings.

"Too many divisions" is a nonissue. It's not as though anyones forcing you to submit for everything.

Apparently the Saturn version saves times without regard to the modes used.

Just bug Rolken about it until he adds separate Time Attack and Reverse divisions. I've brought it up a few times but nothing's been done as of yet.

Separate character submissions would be nice as well...

Information Kiosk / TSC Netplay Tournament?
« on: April 08, 2006, 07:59:34 am »
Reasons why this idea sucks.

1. Games should always be played on whichever server is closest to the players, and never limited to just one. The SCD server* is only particularly useful for games that transcend the Atlantic, which brings me on to...

2. International games are and will continue to be crap until someone writes a predictive emulator, or until I learn C++. Conclusion: Single-player based competition. Now there's an idea... I wonder why no-ones ever thought of that before... Ohwait.

5. ...err 3. TSS can't play, as is written in The Sonic Center Constitution Of Infallibilityâ„¢.

* It's really the Anti3D server under a different name, using different ports to split the players.

Well I'm in favour of banning it, since it eliminates time bonuses and makes it all about getting all the rings in the special stages. It's not as though anyone's going to miss a ring or an enemy in the main level.

In Balloon Park, you must hit at least one balloon on each lap. (Freestyle)
The quickest way through that area is to jump from the slope and up to the finish without going near the balloons, which means this rule disqualifies a perfectly valid shortcut instead of only what was intended.
