I might not have said anything back in the day, but now I will. There's a weird insistence that people seem to have with just tricking the timer and whatever lowest value you get is acceptable even if it's not really the fastest. People figured out that the timer in Chaos 0 starts later in adventure mode, allowing you to get a better time (that doesn't get saved to your Trial charts no less) even though you're not using the real fastest strategy. What's the point? Why limit the strategy by not having the light speed dash and do it an actually slower way? This is when you should have a rule for such instances. Keep it about being fun. About finding and using the fastest strategy, not about figuring out that adventure mode calculates time differently.

Now there's a new strat in Casinopolis to completely freeze time by talking to a hint monitor. So it's no longer about finishing the stage as fast and possible, but just how fast you talk to this monitor that's right next to you. Sure, there's some skill involved in that too, but I find the whole concept of limiting the scope of a challenge this way inane.

When I discovered how to get to a new capsule right at the start of Final Egg, I was disappointed that the stage got so much shorter, but I accepted it because it was still about completing the stage as fast as possible. It wasn't about playing with the timer. When it was discovered how to skip the snowboard in Ice Cap, which let's you finish the stage with the timer frozen, it felt weird, but I accepted it because the frozen timer was a direct result of using a huge shortcut that really does make you finish the stage in record time. Like topic title says, the fun of time attack is all about finishing fastest. If you trick the timer in the process, then so be it, but when doing so means it's no longer about finishing a stage in record time, but only about an on-screen timer, then that's when it's time to consider establishing a rule.

General Sonic / Anyone play Sonic Adventure DX on PC? Question.
« on: January 11, 2013, 09:06:18 pm »
3D movement in the old 2004 port was kind of awkward (and impossible to time attack with) since the joystick was just emulating arrow keys, giving you a maximum of 8 directions rather than 360 degrees. I was wondering if anyone can confirm if the 2011 Steam version is also like that?

General Sonic / Someone save these Sonic X videos for me
« on: April 11, 2010, 06:15:15 am »
4kids are releasing Sonic X subtitled, which is extremely awesome of them. But Hulu does not support Canada, so I would like someone to save the videos for me, using GetFLV or your preferred method.

I'm really mostly looking for professional subtitles as I already own almost the complete series on DVD in Japanese.

I am, or at least I'll try.

And most importantly, will you TA it?

I cannot wait to start TAing those levels just from watching them on vids, and I wanna know who I'll be competing with!

[00:38] Rolken: if you manage to get one, I'll add it to the rankings
Alright, let's get on the technical side of this nice little game...

To give a general appreciation: I found it worth playing for sure, and quite fun. It is challenging contrary to popular belief, because of the poor physics and controls. However if you use Tails then it'll be too easy.

Categories needed are:

  • Time (it restarts if you die after a checkpoint, so a good rule would be to not use them)
  • Rings (this'll be a nice challenge, especially with the 10 minute limit. Some of them are placed ramdomly in the sky for Tails)
  • Score? (it just gets added from stage to stage, so we'd have to substract the previous score everytime. Also, there's no level select, but there is a 1UP code, and there aren't too many stages and they're not too long, so it isn't that much of a problem. If it is, we could always just submit the final score for Sonic/Tails for a specific game which gets recorded instead of one per level)

An additional rule: Do not use the invincibility code?

Characters:

  • Sonic/Knuckles (exactly the same; Knuckles can't glide)
  • Tails (can fly, not very useful in some levels if you're already picking the best route, but it does help in some places, for all three categories)

Levels:

  • Sonic 3 Act 1
  • Sonic 3 Act 2
  • Sonic 3 Act 3
  • Sonic 3 Act 4
  • Sonic 2 Act 1
  • Sonic 2 Act 2
  • Sonic 2 Act 3
  • Sonic 2 Act 4
  • Sonic & Knuckles Act 1
  • Sonic & Knuckles Act 2
  • Sonic & Knuckles Act 3
  • Sonic & Knuckles Act 4

Yes Sonic 3 is actually placed first.

That's all you need to know Rolko. =)

Information Kiosk / Adding extra Twinkle Circuits?
« on: January 06, 2006, 08:59:36 pm »
Of course they wouldn't weight in race/overall rankings, but I think it would be nice to add Samba GP and all the other extra tracks (they're all available to GC with AR btw, and Samba GP can be downloaded to the DC VMU). I know you can see your Samba GP record by looking at the save file, as the game mentions.

Again, this is just a thought.

I'm quite in the TC mood right now. :P

Information Kiosk / Speed Highway bells
« on: January 01, 2006, 04:32:02 pm »
In Speed Highway, there are two bells that when hit give you rings. The first time you hit it gives 5 rings, then 4, then 3, 2 and finally 1. However, going out of a bell's range makes all of its rings reappear, giving an opportunity for infinite rings/score.

Now a new rule was established today by SM, which reads "In Speed Highway, any bell that generates rings upon being hit can't be hit more than five times, or your total doesn't count." However this doesn't specify that you can't get out of range and come back so that you get 5 rings every time, because SM is fine with that.

Well I'm not. First, the best reason is because that's just not how you're supposed to use the bells. They were programmed to give a maximum of 15 rings, and by giving you a maximum of time to hit it when submitting rings/score, we might as well tell you to do it the right way, as giving a limit of 5 but while still being allowed to "cheat" makes even the limit look and seem useless.

Second, it's just less of a pain in the ass. I wouldn't want to go away and come back five times instead of just use the bell the way it's meant to. Of course this is not a reason I would care about if the right way was the opposite, but it's not.

Some people probably think "hey, it's much easier to just forbid using the bells completely, or limit their use to one hit". I do not think so. It is also very simple to just use them correctly. Saying this is like saying "hey we should forbid using rings generated from switches all together" or even something completely out of complex of these tricks like "hey we should forbid item boxes completely".

So what do you think?

Competition Central / SONIC R ONLIIIIIINNNNE
« on: August 13, 2004, 12:49:20 am »
Do YOU have Sonic R, the network patch and the Win 95(gasp) or 98 OS? If yes, reply to this topic! So far I have played against Kogen (who got served by me) and sonichero (who totally kicked my ass :( ), but two players at a time is boring!

So I'm hoping this topic will help creating a game of 4 players. =P

Competition Central / Recording SADX times...
« on: June 23, 2004, 10:33:39 pm »
So far I'm done with EC (trying to do better though), Casinopolis and Final Egg. Once I'm done will all of Sonic's levels, I'll all send them to Rolken. :D

I usually was against showing my shortcuts but now it has gotten boring. :( So maybe I'll get a li'l more competition after this, I can already imagine cybrax beating some of my times...

Information Kiosk / Will it ever be done?
« on: May 24, 2004, 11:13:57 pm »
Just wondering, will the defaut profiles (with times, etc) ever be mixed with the forums profiles? It probably would be something hard to do, but is there any possibilities of this happening? I would love to see this. B)

EDIT: Kinda like this.

Heh, I figured it'd be a good idea to make this thread considering it hasn't been done here yet... ;)

Here's mine, it owns yours. =P (or maybe not)

Oh and btw, I know I haven't been here much lately, it probably won't change in the next few days neither, school is keeping me busy. :(

Competition Central / SA... SADX
« on: February 10, 2004, 11:50:15 pm »
I've been thinking this for a while: I really think there should be different rankings for each version. Both are just too different to be mixed together.

Let's see... (all Sonic)

Ice Cap: There is a shortcut that works better on DC, 5 seconds difference.

Twinkle Park: There's a shortcut that only works on DC, 20 seconds difference.

Final Egg: Shortcut that doesn't work on DC, 50 seconds difference.

Also, the camera is different from one version to the other, the controls don't feel the same much and there is less fog in the GCN version which lets you see objects further away (helful for Tails' Windy Valley). I'm sure there are other stuff too, but I'm too tired right now to remember them.

So what do you all think?

General Sonic / SegaSonic Arcade is now fully playable!
« on: February 07, 2004, 10:47:45 pm »
Nemesis from Sonic Cult has bypassed the protection, and this is the only chance for A LOT of people (including me) to play the game! Here's what you need to do:

1. Click here and extract the available folder to somewhere in your computer.

2. Now press 5 as many times as you want to enter coins, and 1 to enter. Choose your character with Ctrl (which is also the main action button) and you're playing!

3. One problem though, MAME will crash once some icycles will fall from the ceiling in Icy Isle. That's why you need to press TAB > Cheat > Add/Edit a Cheat > Stage select mode and set the Activation Key to whatever you want (I use BACKSPACE).

4. Press Escape until you're out of the menu, press the stage select activation key, select the level A (which is the one right after Icy Isle) and press 1.

TADA! Too bad your times aren't displayed.
